In connection with studies being conducted on the biological value of various feedstuffs, both wild and domestic, in the diet of captivity-reared adult Bobwhite quail, two tests were run in 1940 to determine if quail preferred germinated seed to ungerminated seed, and if germination might enhance the feeding value of seed in a maintenance diet.

Until 1905 this work was done in cooperation with the State through the state engineer’s office. Stream-flow records are fundamental to the distribution of water and the adjudication of water rights – two of the principal duties of the state engineer – and with the continually increasing use of streams, both large and small, the need for more and more stream-flow records is obviously imperative.

Since considerable time was spent in traversing certain sections of the forest in search of Ruffed Grouse broods, an unusual opportunity was afforded to make a general comparative census of the species of birds found therein.

Because of this the northern limits of its range have been rather ill-defined. According to the A. 0. U. Check-List, Fourth Edition: 343, 1931, this bird ranges north to central Virginia in the eastern part of its range and is casual near Washington, D. C. Its distribution in the north-central portion of its range, including the Appalachian Mountains, is discussed in detail by Brooks (Wilson Bull., 50: 86-109, 1938). The discovery in May, 1942, of three pairs of these birds nesting on the Beltsville Research Center, Prince George County, Maryland, considerably extends the northern limits of the known breeding range of this species in the Piedmont and coastal-plain region east of the Appalachian Mountains.

On June 1, near the end of the northward flight, I found a male Hooded Warbler singing in shrubby undergrowth on a wooded coulee slope on the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, about two miles south of Kenmare. The bird was observed at close range for several minutes, both without and with 7-power binoculars. It behaved as in the vicinity of Washington, D. C., where I have been familiar with the species for several years, the song being vigorous and loud and the movements leisurely.

These were arranged so as to permit the determination of age in healthy birds from one to five months of age. The degree of individual variation was much greater than that found by Bureau, however, and limits accuracy in age determination after the 10th week. The post-juvenal wing molt began on the birds' 28th day and ended when the quail were 146 to 154 days old. The post-juvenal body molt was found to take place largely between the 70th and 100th days. The juvenal rectrices were renewed from the 62nd to the 122nd days, the new feathers being as long as their longest coverts when the birds were 116 days old. The color of the tarsi varied from pink, at 32 days of age, to straw color at 60 days, and yellow-gray from 83 to 180 days. At six months, the color of the beak was identical with that of adults. Unlike several other game bird species, the flexibility of the lower jaw was not an accurate index to age in bob-whites older than 11 weeks. Rigor mortis and freezing were found to hinder the testing of this criterion.
