Systematic underground-water investigations have been in progress in the State of Utah since 1935 by the Federal Geological Survey in cooperation with the state engineer. The general plan and outline of these investigations, together with a summary of results accomplished to June 30, 1940, are given in the Twentieth, Twenty-first, and Twenty-second biennial reports of the state engineer to the governor of Utah. The investigations include two important phases: (1) A determination of the fluctuations of water levels and artesian pressures in most of the underground-water areas in the state, based on periodic measurements with steel tapes and on charts of automatic water-state recorders and pressure recorders, and (2) detailed investigations of individual underground-water areas to determine the source, movement, disposal, quantity, and quality of underground water, and to show the relation of present development to the maximum economic development of those areas. The aim of the investigation is to determine and make available factual data as to underground-water conditions in the different areas of the state so that they may serve to guide the state engineer in an equitable adjudication of underground-water resources.

The method consists in generating a predetermined carbon-dioxide concentration in the 1000-gallon tanks of the trucks through the successive addition of predissolved sodium bicarbonate and dilute sulphuric acid in proper quantities. Carbon-dioxide anaesthesia effectively solved the acute problem of species segregation in the fish salvage program and, with minor modifications, could be used with equal success in certain hatchery operations necessitating the handling of large fish.

These papers by no means exhaust the subject; probably as many more equally interesting records could be found.
As in the previous article, a bird must have been at least five years old at its latest report to be included in the list. In the case of Common Terns, the minimum has had to be made ten years, and few ducks less than ten years old have been included. No special effort has been made to 'dig out' the complete records of birds that have returned several times to the banding station, but when the record has been supplied on the return card by the operator it has been used.

The area covered is the easternmost section of the U.S.S.R.; that is the area east of the Yenisei River. Each map and accompanying table is devoted· to a specialized set of problems; together they cover such subjects as geology, construction materials, mineral fuels, terrain, water supply, rivers and climate. The data is somewhat generalized due to the scale of treatment as well as to the scarcity of basic data. Each of the maps are rated as to reliability according to the reliability scale on the following page. Considerable of the data shown is of an interpretative nature, although precise data from literature was used wherever possible. The maps and tables were compiled by a special group from the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Intelligence Branch of the Office, Chief of Engineers, War Department.
