The first field work for the purpose of determining the radioactivity of Pennsylvania black shales in Oklahoma was done in October, 1944, in the vicinity of Tulsa. Small phosphatic nodules were found to have relatively high radioactivity, particularly those in the black shale overlying the Checkerboard limestone. In May and June, 1945, more work was done in order to determine with more assurance, the abundance and radioactivity of the nodules. The later work covered all known black shale horizons in the Pennsylvanian system that could be found. The work extended as far north as Kansas City.

A number of coals of Pennsylvanian age were tested. They are all much too low in radioactivity to be of further interest.

The black shale over the Checkerboard limestone is the best horizon from the standpoint of abundance and radioactivity of nodules. One sample of nodules from this shale contains 0.186 percent equivalent uranium, 0.095 percent uranium. However, the distribution and radioactivity of the nodules are widely variable. The average nodule content of the black shale is about two percent over a thickness of about 2.5 feet. The average equivalent uranium content of the nodules is about 0.035 percent and the average uranium content 0.015 to 0.020 percent. With a product of this grade in view, the large mining operation necessary to produce a relatively small amount of nodules does not seem justified.

Two black shale beds, each about two feet thick and neither of which contains any nodules, contain 0.024 and 0.017 percent equivalent uranium and 0.013 and 0.010 percent uranium respectively. Too little work was done to permit calculations of tonnage, but material of this grade does not merit more detailed work at this time.

The area included in this investigation lies in Eddy County, New Mexico, largely between the foothills of the Guadalupe Mountains on the west and the Pecos River on the east, and extends from Carlsbad southward to Black River. The Pecos River drains the entire area, and in the growing season when water is diverted at Avalon Dam for irrigation its flow in this locality is maintained largely by the numerous springs emerging in the river channel north of Carlsbad. Carlsbad and vicinity depend on ground water fro a domestic water supply as the waters of the Pecos River are too highly mineralized for domestic use. About 1,120 acres of land was irrigation by ground water in the vicinity of Carlsbad in 1940.

Valley fill, of Quaternary age, extends over most of the area, largely as a thin veneer, but it has a maximum known thickness of 256 feet. It is made up largely of clay with lenses of conglomerate, gravel, and sand. The Rustler formation, of upper Permian age, underlies the fills and is composed of gypsum and red beds with one persistent bed of limestone. The Salado formation, which is composed chiefly of halite (common salt), underlies the Rustler formation elsewhere buy it is absent over most of the area described in this paper. This Castile formations, which is predominantly anhydrite, underlies the Salado and overlies the Delaware Mountain group, of middle Permian age, which is deeply buried in most of the area. The upper part of the Delaware Mountain group grades into the Capitan and Carlsbad limestones to the north, east, and west, the latter being exposed near Carlsbad and in the foothills of the Guadalupe Mountain. The Carlsbad limestone in turn grades into the upper part of the Chalk Bluff formation.

Ground water apparently moves eastward from the Guadalupe Mountains through the Carlsbad limestone to recharge the aquifers in the Delaware Mountain, Castile, and Salado units. In these formations the water soon becomes too highly mineralized for domestic or irrigation use. A large part of the water in the Carlsbad limestone emerges in the spring area north of Carlsbad, and a part of it moves into the valley fill in Dark Canyon Arroyo. The water in the fill of Dark Canyon Arroyo moves laterally into the limestone of the Rustier formation. The water moving eastward in the valley fill and Rustier limestone becomes progressively more mineralized and in the farmland area in the Carlsbad Irrigation Dstrict it is unfit for domestic use. In addition, highly mineralized water seeping from the farmlands and canals in the Carlsbad Irrigation District commingles with the water from the west, and the resulting mixture is undesirable even for watering stock, although if necessity it is much used for that purpose.

Water occurs in channels of the Carlsbad limestone, and wells drilled into it generally obtain large yields id hard but potable water. The municipal supply of the city of Carlsbad is derived from 4 wells (1940) in the Carlsbad limestone. The aquifer has a high transmissibility in the vicinity of Carlsbad, as was shown by a test made on one of the wells owned by Southwestern Public Service Co. This well has a specific capacity of 275 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown. The present withdrawal of water from wells penetrating the aquifers in the Carlsbad limestone averages about 4 second-feet (about 2,600,00 gallons a day). The average flow emerging in the spring area in the Pacos River north of Carlsbad is about 60 second-feet (about 40 million gallons a day). It appears that about 12 second-feet of this flow (about 8 million gallons a day) comes from aquifers in the Carlsbad limestone and that the remainder represents leakage from Lake Avalon and the canal system.

The valley fill is less permeable than the Carlsbad limestone but in some places sufficient yields are obtained for irrigation purposes. A test made on a well in the fill just south of Carlsbad showed the aquifer in that locality to have a transmissibility of about 60,000.

\n

Contamination of the household wells in West Carlsbad does not appear to be taking place at the present time although the juxtaposition of cesspools and outhouses on the one hand and poorly cased wells for domestic water supply on the other makes the situation dangerous.

The scleractinian coral fauna of the Eocene Upper Scotland formation of Barbados comprises 27 species and varieties belonging to 23 genera and subgenera. There is a mingling of hermatypic and ahermatypic forms suggesting a tropical shallow-water, non-littoral environment at depths at or even beyond the lower limits of temperature for vigorous reef-coral growth. Most (16) of the species and 2 of the genera are new and generally show relations with the middle Eocene Claibornian coral fauna of somewhat similar environment in the United States. A few species are either the same as or have affinity with Claibornian forms; one or two are allied to western European or Mediterranean Tertiary species. Of particular interest is the occurrence of Endopachys maclurii. Two corals are described from the Miocene of Martinique. One is a new species of the odd subgenus of Sphenotrochus, Eusthenotrochus, heretofore known only from one recent species and another from the Eocene of the Paris Basin. The other is Dominicotrochus dominicensis (Vaughan), a turbinolian previously known from a single Dominican specimen of uncertain origin and horizon.

Since this acid indicator is stable indefinitely, it is more useful than other zirconium-alizarin reagents previously reported. The use of sulfuric acid alone in acidifying the zirconium-alizarin reagent makes possible the maximum suppression of the interference of sulfate. Control of the pH of the samples eliminates errors due to the alkalinity of the samples. In May 1943, Illinois was subjected to a series of flood that reached major intensities in the central part of the state but decreased to minor intensity--less than the maximum for the year--in the northwestern and extreme southern part. All records were broken on lower Illinois River and on its triibutaries entering from the east, from Sangamon River south, as well as on Kaskaskia River. These floods were the result of rain during the storm period May 6-21. At no place did it rain continuously for 24 hours and in most places the limit was about half a day. An appropriate description is a series of showers that produced a series of floods on small streams. As the rains continued, the ground became more nearly saturated and the ratio of runoff to rainfall increased. As the small streams entered larger ones, with their peaks arriving at different times, the channel storage of the larger streams smoothed out the minor peaks so that the very large streams had only one peak. The magnitude of channel storage in Illinois River and its adjoining lakes is emphasized by the fact that the peak discharge at Meredosia, lasting about 44 hours, was no greater than the peak discharge of Sangamon River at Oakford, 123,000 second-feet, that lasted about an hour.

An abnormal growth of juvenal wing-feathers occurred in pen-reared Bobwhite quail at the age of two weeks on two experiments planned to determine the optimum level of dried milk products in a diet for growing quail.

Some of the artesian wells in the Flowell area have a continuous flow of water up around the outside of the casing, others seem to be in this condition only when they are capped and have no surface flow from the casing. During recent years a few of the well casings have been perforated at several depths in an effort to increase the flow. Some of the wells flowed less after they were perforated than they did before. These observations led to the belief that there might be a large amount of leakage underground from the wells and that the drop of artesian pressure during the last 15 years might be caused in part by this underground waste. This survey of underground leakage was made with the deepwell meter during the period April 13 to May 24, 1943. In addition to the well exploration with the meter, measurements were made of the flow of each well, the diameter of the casing, and the height to which the artesian water 5 surface would rise, either above or below the land surface when the well was not discharging.

The spring and fall, which represent the transition periods between these two, are characterized by feeding habits that are generally intermediate. The diets of the two species of Blue Grouse, Dendrugapus obscurus and Dendragapus juliginosus, are quite similar as far as major types of food are concerned, but they differ considerably in the species that are taken. In 1936 Twomey and Twomey reported that 20-50 parts per million of selenium as sodium selenite in the drinking water produced poisoning in ducks in which the syndrome was identical with that produced by Clostridium botulinum type C, which had been considered the principal causative agent in western duck sickness (Kalmbach and Gunderson, 1934). In a more recent paper, Twomey, Twomey and Williams (1939) reported the analyses of a number of duck livers collected at various points near Great Salt Lake where the sickness is prevalent. These analyses show the presence of 7-148 p. p. m. of selenium, based on the oven-dried weight of the livers. In contrast, no selenium was found in duck livers obtained in Pennsylvania, where sickness has not been reported. As a result of these findings, a thorough investigation of the significance of selenium in outbreaks of western duck sickness was undertaken in the summer of 1940.
