This report presents the results of a brief geologic reconnaissance of some of the chromite-bearing sills between Red Bluff Bay and Silver Bay in central Baranof Island, southeastern Alaska (see figs. 1 and 2), and the results of a magnetic study of a chromite body in the ultrabasic rocks at Red Bluff Bay. Also included are the results of a brief examination of a nickel prospect near Sitka.

The field work, upon which this report is largely based, was done by the authors in the early part of August 1943 as a part of a Geological Survey project to investigate some of the ultrabasic rocks of southeastern Alaska to determine the presence or absence in them of significant nickel-copper or chromium deposits. Previous studies of some of the chromite-bearing ultrabasic rocks of Baranof Island were made by Guild and Balsley during the summer of 1941.

The copper-bearing magnetite deposit, known as the Poor Nan prospect, which is on the Iron King No. 3 claim of James Coleman, is 2 miles northwest of the village of Kasaan (see fig. 1) and 35 miles northwest of Ketchikan, the nearest port. The deposit is within 2,000 feet of tidewater in an area ranging in altitude from 50 feet to 200 feet. Outcrops are confined to stream valleys and to prospect cuts and trenches. Most of the area is covered with a veneer of vegetation, glacial drift, and alluvium. The deposit has been explored by three short adits on the west side, four shafts along the east margin, numerous pits and trenches, and 13 drill holes (see fig. 2)

In January, June, and July 1938, and June 1939 parts of Texas experienced floods that exceeded previously recorded stages at many places and that were unusually high over reaches of several hundred miles on the streams of the State.

This report presents records of precipitation at several hundred places; 10 isohyetal maps; records of peak stages and discharges and of daily mean discharges during the flood period at more than 30 river-measurement stations; hydrographs of discharge at 19 stations; records of suspended matter transported in stream channels by the flood; results of studies of rainfall and runoff; records of past floods in the Red, Sabine, and Colorado River Basins; and other data pertinent to the floods in Texas.

Collection by the Geological Survey of records of stream flow in the Colorado River Basin was begun in August 1889, when three gaging stations were established in Arizona, on' the Gila, Salt, and Verde Rivers. In 1894-95 the work was extended to include 15 gaging stations, on tributary streams at points in the basin where irrigation development was most intensive, and by 1910 the number had increased to 109. In 1938 there were 262 gaging stations, located to advantage throughout the basin.

The earliest known records of discharge in the Colorado River Basin were individual measurements of the main river, made by engineers of the United States Army, 1 at Stone's Ferry near Boulder Canyon August 12, 1875, at Camp Mohave September 2, 1875, and at Fort Yuma March 20, 1876. In the summer of 1876, the Southern Pacific Co. established a gage near the railroad bridge over Colorado River at Yuma, and daily gage readings at that point, now available, are continuous since January 1, 1878.

Modern irrigation, using surface waters diverted from various streams in the basin, was begun many years before the first continuous records of discharge Had been obtained. As developments for irrigation and other purposes increased in size and number, became more systematized, and required greater knowledge of water supply, the collection of records of stream flow was substantially augmented through the assistance of many interested parties and agencies, both private and public.
