It possesses a double row of cilia about one‐third of the distance from the anterior end of the body and has a large scopula which is variable in shape and provides a large surface for attachment. The macronucleus is long and band‐like, and makes a semicircle beneath the peristome from which it extends into the lower part of the body. The small, ovoid micronucleus is located near the middle of the body.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The organism is found on the external body surfaces and the gills of large‐mouth and smallmouth black bass. Its relationship to its host is probably that of an ecto‐commensal, but there is further evidence that these organisms may indirectly cause mortality among bass.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The organism is interesting because of the manner in which it becomes dome‐shaped when it leaves its host, causing it to resemble Trichodina. For general information about the project the reader is referred to the general introduction preceding this paper. </p><p>The senior author, Lloyd W. Stephenson, is responsible for that part of the chart treating of the Upper Cretaceous series in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain (exceptions noted below) and the Lower Cretaceous series of the North Atlantic Coastal Plain; with respect to the Upper Cretaceous his presentation is based largely on his personal knowledge of the paleontology and stratigraphy of the area, gained from field and laboratory studies ranging from reconnaissance to detailed; all published information has been considered, and much of it utilized, but it is not practicable to include a complete bibliography. References are given to papers presenting views differing from those of the author, and to recent papers not yet listed in bibliographies. A complete bibliography of Texas geology through 1932 is given by Sellards (1933, p. 819-965). Watson H. Monroe has collaborated in the preparation of that part of the chart showing therelations of the Upper Cretaceous units in Alabama and Mississippi. The classification shown in the Upper Cretaceous part of the Delaware column is based on a recently published paper by Charles W. Carter (1937, p. 237-281). Philip B. King is responsible for the remainder of the chart covering the Lower Cretaceous (Comanche series) of central Texas (largely compiled from published sources) and all of the Cretaceous in trans-Pecos Texas (from personal knowledge and published sources). In March 1941 this part of the chart was checked by R. W. Imlay, and changes were made by King at his suggestion. References to the more important literature are given.</p><p> In a correlation chart of this kind, in which age equivalencies are expressed by horizontal lining, it is obviously impossible to indicate relative thicknesses by vertical spacing. Hiatuses are indicated by vertical lining. Major low-angle thrusting is indicated by deformed Ordovician strata resting on Paleozoics of varying age. Overlying a thick breccia zone, the upper thrust plate consists of sandstones, andesitic flows and tuffs, black shales, and bedded cherts (Vinini formation). Ordovician age of the Vinini is established on the basis of graptolite faunules. A belt of Lower to Middle Ordovician graptolitic facies similar to the Vinini formation crosses the Great Basin west of Roberts Mountains. Deposits of roughly the same age in the Roberts Mountains meridian and eastward are dominantly limestone, carrying distinct faunas. Axial planes of overturned folds in the thrust plate dip west, a further indication that the upper thrust plate moved from west to east. Minimum horizontal displacement is 16 miles. The date of thrusting is uncertain, but presumably was later Cretaceous or early Tertiary. Following thrusting, an alaskite stock and rhyolite porphyry plugs were intruded; lava flows and tuffs covered the area in part. Thrust plate and cover of volcanics have been broken into normal fault blocks. There, sedimentary rocks and diorite have been intruded by the Striped Rock and the Carsonville granites. The granites have metamorphosed, injected, reacted with, and replaced the older rocks to form many mixed types. This injection complex is part of a large area of similar rocks that form the core of the Catoctin Mountain‐Blue Ridge uplift in Virginia, and is much older than the overlying volcanic series of later pre‐Cambrian age. ©1942. In general both E and Fm are unknown. It rises in the Pinal Mountains near the mining town of Superior and enters the outwash‐plain at Black Point about three miles north of Florence Junction (see Fig. 1). Thence it passes over the desert in a southwesterly direction toward Chandler, spreads over the lowlands, and disappears. The flow of the stream consists almost entirely of storm‐water and is of the quick, flashy type common to the deserts of the Southwest. In ordinary years the stream is dry most of the time. Formerly the flood‐waters spread over the floor of the desert and did no harm. Now, however, they invade highly cultivated lands that are irrigated with water from Salt River or from wells, and cause serious damage to both crops and canals. The damage could be prevented by storing the stormwaters in a reservoir formed by a dam at or above Black Point.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical The Ogallala formerly extended over a much greater area, but it has been removed by erosion from much of the territory it once occupied. The areas in which it remains are the High Plains, which are bounded by prominent escarpments both on the east and on the west, and are traversed in Texas by the Canadian River, which is deeply entrenched in the older rocks. The water‐bearing sands of the Ogallala in both segments are cut off in all directions from any underground connection, except through the underlying older rocks which contain highly mineralized water unlike the fresh water in the Ogallala. Throughout this belt it supplies water to wells for stock, industrial, irrigation, and municipal use and to a series of fault‐springs, some of which are among the largest in the United States. These springs have played an important part in the economic and cultural development of Texas. In 1718 the Spaniards stationed a department of light infantry near the springs at San Antonio and soon after established missions and constructed elaborate systems of canals for irrigating considerable areas. After the winning of Texas' independence large numbers of settlers moved into the area. This influx was greatly accelerated following the admission of Texas to the Federal Union and towns were soon established near all of the major springs. It is bounded on the east by the westward facing escarpment of the High Plains and on the west by the crests of the Guadalupe, Sacramento and Sierra Blanca mountains, and a poorly defined divide extending northward through Gallinas Mountain and Pedernal Mountain to Glorieta Mesa. Most of the basin is formed by extensive upland erosion‐surfaces that slope gently toward the river.
