The area is underlain by a series of sands, clays, and shales of Eocene age that dip, in general, southward at an angle a little greater than that of the land surface, which also slopes southward, thus creating favorable artesian conditions. The formations cropping out in the area from north to south are the Wilcox group undifferentiated, the Carrizo sand, the Mont Selman formation, consisting of the Reklaw member, the Queen City sand member, and the Weches greensand member, the Sparta sand, the Cook Mountain and Yegua formations, and the Jackson group undifferentiated. Small supplies of potable water may be obtained from shallow wells in the outcrop areas of most of these formations. Only three of the formations appear to be likely to yield large supplies of water to wells, and in these the water is under sufficient artesian pressure in most places to cause wells to flow. The Yegua formation yields large amounts of water to some wells in the vicinity of Lufkin. However, the water is moderately mineralized and is not acceptable for municipal use except after dilution with surface water and treatment to reduce mineralization. Moreover, most of the wells in this formation yield only small quantities of water, which is highly mineralized. The Sparta sand appears to be likely to yield large supplies of water to wells throughout the northern part of Angelina County. The water, however, is moderately to highly mineralized and cannot be used for purposes that require water of good quality. The Carrizo sand promises to yield large quantities of water low in mineralization in northern Angelina County and southern Nacogdoches County. Computations indicate that the present southward flow through the formation is about 2,750,000 gallons a day, but pumping from wells and thus increasing the hydraulic gradient would greatly increase the flow. Considerable amounts of water will also be released from storage in the formation after pumping begins.

\nSection 17 of General Land Office Circular 1386, dated May 7, 1936, states:
\n17. Royalties.--Royalties, as follows, shall be paid on the\namount or value of all production from the leased lands (except\nthat portion thereof used for production purposes on said lands\nor unavoidably lost):
\n(1) When the price of oil used in computing royalty value is\n$1 or more per barrel, the per centum of royalty shall be as\nfollows:
\nWhen the average production for the calendar month in barrels\nper well per day is--
\nNot over 50, the royalty shall be 12.5 percent.
\nOver 50 but not over 60, the royalty shall be 13 percent.
\nOver 60 but not over 70, the royalty shall be 14 percent.
\nOver 70 but not over 80, the royalty shall be 15 percent.
\nOver 80 but not over 90, the royalty shall be 16 percent.
\nOver 90 but not over 110, the royalty shall be 17 percent.
\nOver 110 but not over 130, the royalty shall be 18 percent.
\nOver 130 but not over 150, the royalty shall be 19 percent.
\nOver 150 but not over 200, the royalty shall be 20 percent.
\nOver 200 but not over 250, the royalty shall be 21 percent.
\nOver 250 but not over 300, the royalty shall be 22 percent.
\nOver 300 but not over 350, the royalty shall be 23 percent.
\nOver 350 but not over 400, the royalty shall be 24 percent.
\nOver 400 but not over 450, the royalty shall be 25 percent.
\nOver 450 but not over 500, the royalty shall be 26 percent.
\nOver 500 but not over 750, the royalty shall be 27 percent.
\nOver 750 but not over 1,000, the royalty shall be 28 percent.
\nOver 1,000 but not over 1,250, the royalty shall be 29 percent.
\nOver 1,250 but not over 1,500, the royalty shall be 30 percent.
\nOver 1,500 but not over 2,000, the royalty shall be 31 percent.
\nOver 2,000 the royalty shall be 32 percent.
(2) When the price of oil used in computing royalty value is\nless than $1 per barrel, the per centum of royalty shall be the\nforegoing multiplied by the ratio of said price to a price of $1 per\nbarrel: Provided, however, That the per centum of royalty shall\nnever be less than 12.5.
\n(3) If the United States shall take its royalty in oil, the price\nreceived by the lessee, as well as that received by the lessor,\nshall be considered in determining the price to govern the per\ncentum of royalty, unless both prices are $1 or more per barrel.
\nThe average production per well per day for oil and for gas\nshall be determined under rules and regulations approved by the\nSecretary of the Interior.

This major synclinal structure is the result of the Laramide disturbance. Deformation, however, has continued possibly into the Quaternary. Intrusions, probably contemporaneous with those of the Spanish Peaks, have deformed the strata in the northern portion of the Moreno Valley. Scully Mountain is a northwestward-plunging anticline produced by a porphyry intrusion. A Mid-Tertiary surface of low relief is now represented by broad mountain flats at elevations near 10,000 feet. The Moreno Valley was initiated as a topographic feature about the close of the Mid-Tertiary. Its subsequent history is in many respects similar to that of the Rio Grande Depression. During the Quaternary a broad valley stage and three lower pediments have been developed. The lowest pediments are cut on deformed valley fill, believed to be Pliocene and here named the Eagle Nest formation. The early drainage of the valley was south and east into the Canadian River. Stream piracy by the Cimarron River diverted drainage to the east through the present Cimarron Canyon into the Canadian River. Drainage south of the point of capture has been reversed for about 14 miles, the present stream draining the southern portion of the Moreno Valley flowing northward to the Cimarron River. © 1941 Geological Society of America.

Mineralogy","docAbstract":"The minerals of the igneous rocks of the Highwood Mountains are described. The primary hornblende of the quartz latites is basaltic and it has been partly replaced by a common green hornblende. Hornblende is rare in the alkalic rocks. Augite is an abundant mineral of the alkalic rocks; in the syenites it contains some acmite, especially on the borders of the crystals. Aegirite is a common metamorphic mineral. The olivine of the shonkinites contains from 12 to 22 mol per cent of fayalite, that of the syenite from Square Butte 50 per cent. Monticellite twinned into trillings on (031) is an abundant mineral in one small intrusive body. In the alkalic rocks barium sanidine is abundant and plagioclase rare; leucite, primary analcime, and pseudoleucite are common and sodalite rare. Natrolite, thomsonite, and other zeolites are widespread and very abundant.

Petrology","docAbstract":"In the shonkinite series olivine, leucite, and analcime crystallized only from magmas with over 20 per cent of mafites. At this stage the leucite and analcime inverted to pseudoleucite. Pyroxene crystallized over the whole range of rocks and changed little in composition until the magma reached the composition of nepheline syenite when it became richer in aegirite. A little pale biotite crystallized early, but most of the biotite is dark and crystallized late. A little barium rich sanidine crystallized early. The abundant late feldspar is poor in barium.
Four petrographic subprovinces are represented in the area. The older quartz latites are near lime-alkalic rocks, the syenites and monzonites of Highwood Peak are somewhat farther removed, and the shonkinite series are potash-rich alkalic rocks. The alnoites are very rich in lime. The parent mafic magmas of the various subprovinces formed in depth by differentiation of a primary basaltic magma. These parent magmas were erupted toward the surface and there differentiated in a different way. The differentiation of the shonkinite magma was chiefly by settling of augite, olivine, and some biotite.

Contact Metamorphism","docAbstract":"Very near the contacts of the stocks the sediments have been replaced by sanidine and diopside, through magmatic reaction. An irregular zone of indurated sediments, produced largely by hydrothermal agents, extends outward from the stocks for as much as half a mile. Locally, more intense hydrothermal metamorphism has formed orthoclase and fibrous amphibole with some diopside and locally garnet, phlogopite, spinel, and cordierite.
Along the dikes metamorphism extends out from the contacts for a distance of a few inches up to 5 feet. Thermal metamorphism produced recrystallization of the fine interstitial material of the sandstone. Aegirite, calcite, hematite, and pyrite were deposited by hydrothermal solutions. Magmatic reaction produced diopside.
Reaction between sandstone and the magma of the headed dike caused a progressive replacement of plagioclase and quartz by potash feldspar.
Granitic inclusions in the biotite phonolite dikes have a marginal shell in which plagioclase has been replaced by orthoclase. Surrounding each inclusion is a zone of mixed rock which contains quartz grains much embayed and surrounded by 0.1 mm. prisms of pyroxene.

The Extrusive Rocks","docAbstract":"Early eruptions of quartz latites, rather rich in potash, built up a volcanic mountain over 30 miles across on an irregular surface of late Cretaceous sediments. Erosion then removed much of the quartz latite. Renewed volcanism formed a volcano made up of basaltic rocks (mafic phonolite) that covered the quartz latites. The phonolites vary in texture and in the kind and proportion of the felsic minerals present. All contain abundant phenocrysts of augite and some of olivine; some have phenocrysts of leucite, others analcime, and many have pseudoleucite. Some have phenocrysts of biotite and barium sanidine. The groundmasses contain about the same minerals as the phenocrysts with more felsic minerals and more biotite in the coarser-grained groundmasses.

pathogenicity of these protozoa. This paper treats the distribution of parasites found in sampling miscellaneous birds of the District of Columbia and vicinity and contains a preliminary report on the more important phase of the problem of pathogenicity.
The Lloyd sand is a productive artesian aquifer underlying all of Long Island except the westernmost part. It rests unconformably upon a floor of crystalline rock that slopes toward the southeast at about 100 feet to the mile. Locally the bed‐rock surface has a relief of more than 100 feet. The Lloyd sand consists of white quartz‐sand and gravel, with some layers of clay. It is considered to be part of the Raritan—the basal formation of the Upper Cretaceous series. At Rockaway Park, on the south shore of the Island, the Lloyd is about 200 feet thick and is overlain by 300 feet of clays of Raritan age. The Raritan clays are in turn overlain by about 150 feet of sands, believed to be of Magothy age, and about 315 feet of Pleistocene sediments.

Funds for the project are furnished under a cooperative agreement with the Arizona State Water Commissioner, supplemented by a substantial grant from the United States Engineer Office of the War Department. The State of Arizona wants information regarding the quantity of ground‐water available to supplement surface‐water irrigation. The Army Engineers would like to know the effect that flood‐control structures which may be built on the upper Gila will have on existing relations between river‐flow and ground‐water storage.

The Houston District, as the term is used here, comprises all of Harris County and parts of Montgomery, Waller, and Fort Bend counties, lying between the Trinity and Brazos rivers. The investigation in this area has consisted primarily of inventorying well‐logs and pumpage‐records, of obtaining water‐level data and information regarding the chemical character of the ground‐water, and wherever possible of correlating these data.

Many of these surges and changes of level are undoubtedly direct effects of the several earthquake‐waves that are recorded on seismographs. Thus, water‐level recorders on observation‐wells promise to afford a means of extending greatly the scope of seismographic records for local areas.
