It rests unconformably upon a floor of crystalline rock that slopes toward the southeast at about 100 feet to the mile. Locally the bed‐rock surface has a relief of more than 100 feet. The Lloyd sand consists of white quartz‐sand and gravel, with some layers of clay. It is considered to be part of the Raritan—the basal formation of the Upper Cretaceous series. At Rockaway Park, on the south shore of the Island, the Lloyd is about 200 feet thick and is overlain by 300 feet of clays of Raritan age. The Raritan clays are in turn overlain by about 150 feet of sands, believed to be of Magothy age, and about 315 feet of Pleistocene sediments.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR022i003p00783","usgsCitation":"Jacob, C.E., 1941, Notes on the elasticity of the Lloyd sand on Long Island, New York : Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, no. 22, p. 783-787, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR022i003p00783.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"783","endPage":"787","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":378530,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","otherGeospatial":"Long Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -72.45483398437499,\n              40.84290487729676\n            ],\n            [\n              -72.421875,\n              41.025499378313754\n            ],\n            [\n              -72.5042724609375,\n              41.04621681452063\n            ],\n            [\n              -72.828369140625,\n              40.9840449469281\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.2403564453125,\n              40.97575093157534\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.67431640625,\n              40.925964939514294\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.9544677734375,\n              40.75974059207392\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.091796875,\n              40.65147128144057\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.0313720703125,\n              40.57224011776902\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.9434814453125,\n              40.50544628405211\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.2513427734375,\n              40.60561205826018\n            ],\n            [\n              -72.564697265625,\n              40.75974059207392\n            ],\n            [\n              -72.45483398437499,\n              40.84290487729676\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","issue":"22","edition":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jacob, C. It consists of a plain of low relief that lies not far above sea‐level, and is a part of the West Gulf Coastal Plain. A part of the District is shown in Figure 1.

Large quantities of ground‐water are pumped in the Houston District from a succession of beds of sand that occur between 300 and 1,900 feet below the surface. These sands are interbedded with relatively impermeable clays. The formations range in age from Miocene to Recent and were deposited during several cycles of marine and continental deposition. They may be classified into several zones which are predominantly clay or predominantly sand, but in which the individual beds at most horizons can not be traced very far. Most of the beds interfinger and grade into one another laterally and vertically in short distances, the thinner beds in many places changing character or pinching out within a few hundred feet. The formations dip to the southeastward, the dip ranging from about 35 feet to the mile in the older formations to about 20 feet to the mile in the younger. In the outcrop‐areas of the formations, and for considerable distances down the dip, the sediments are in general dominantly sandy. Far to the southeastward, in the direction of the Gulf, clay predominates.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR022i003p00756","usgsCitation":"Guyton, W., 1941, Application of coefficients of transmissibility and storage to regional problems in the Houston District, Texas: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, p. 756-770, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR022i003p00756.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"756","endPage":"770","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":378476,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Houston","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.328125,\n              29.372601506681402\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.317626953125,\n              29.372601506681402\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.317626953125,\n              30.230594564932193\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.328125,\n              30.230594564932193\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.328125,\n              29.372601506681402\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Guyton, W.F.","contributorId":11688,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Guyton","given":"W.F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":798937,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Great accumulations of boulders, gravel, sand, and clay have been brought into both valleys by the streams that drain the surrounding highlands, and the valleys have become topographic basins whose lowest parts are occupied by lakes or dry alkali flats, rimmed on all sides with the alluvial fans and cones that have been formed by the streams tributary to the valleys. The gradations of meteorologic conditions as regard both area and time are relatively homogeneous during such storm‐events and are affected but moderately by orographical influences. Under such conditions similar storm‐characteristics prevail over vast areas. True, precipitation decreases toward the boundaries of such major storm‐areas, and locally precipitation‐rates may greatly exceed the average. Often, however, drainage‐basin after drainage‐basin will yield comparable depths of flood‐runoff. The storms of March, 1936, which resulted in the simultaneous occurrence of floods throughout all of the northeastern part of the United States from Ohio and Virginia to Maine and the storm of January, 1937, which embraced all of the 200,000 square miles comprising the Ohio River drainage are typical of major Eastern disturbances. The storm of December, 1937, in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys is used herein to illustrate what may be called a typical major California disturbance, and it is this storm and resulting flood that I wish to consider in some detail and also to make such comparisons and contrasts with Eastern floods as seem to be of general interest.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR022i001p00124","usgsCitation":"Boyt, W., 1941, Factors influencing runoff during the flood of December, 1937, in northern California: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, v. 22, no. 1, p. 124-129, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR022i001p00124.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"124","endPage":"129","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":378461,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -124.134521484375,\n              37.47485808497102\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.498046875,\n              37.47485808497102\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.498046875,\n              40.18726672309203\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.134521484375,\n              40.18726672309203\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.134521484375,\n              37.47485808497102\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"22","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boyt, W.G.","contributorId":240765,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Boyt","given":"W.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":798924,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This region contains Cretaceous strata, largely calcareous, which grade upward into Tertiary volcanics, locally without break. The strata are cut by numerous intrusions, largely alkalic, and are extensively folded and faulted.Many of the lodes are near the base of the impervious Del Rio clay, some at higher horizons, and a few in intrusive masses. The solutions penetrated only along open passageways, such as major fractures or joints in zones of tension, and, especially at horizons above the Del Rio, in fractures related to fault zones.The quicksilver is believed to have been brought in by alkali sulphide solutions. Most other constituents that may once have been present in the solutions had been separated earlier. Precipitation resulted largely from mingling with groundwater. The comparatively low temperature and pressure at the shallow levels where groundwater was present aided the precipitation. As the then-existing zone of groundwater circulation has since been partly exposed by erosion, the lodes are necessarily rather close to the present surface. The gangue minerals, particularly the calcite, are believed to have been derived mainly from the sedimentary rocks with some addition of material from deep sources. The relation of the widespread bitumen to genesis is puzzling here, as in many other quicksilver deposits. Weathering is of slight economic importance. Many minerals that resemble supergene products, including the quicksilver chlorides, are thought to have resulted here from original deposition within the zone of vadose water.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologist","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.36.2.115","usgsCitation":"Ross, C.P., 1941, The quicksilver deposits of the Terlingua region, Texas: Economic Geology, v. 36, no. 2, p. 115-142, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.36.2.115.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"115","endPage":"142","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":378287,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Terlingua Region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.2108154296875,\n              29.463514026304715\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.12841796875,\n              29.38217507514529\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.0130615234375,\n              29.31514119318728\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.7933349609375,\n              29.27202470909843\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.71093749999999,\n              29.19532826709913\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.5736083984375,\n              29.161755515328824\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.46923828124999,\n              29.080175989623203\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.3099365234375,\n              29.017748018496047\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.1231689453125,\n              29.00333620017934\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.0133056640625,\n              29.137768254983335\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.9254150390625,\n              29.23847708592805\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.864990234375,\n              29.3678143847754\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.799072265625,\n              29.544787796199465\n            ],\n            [\n              -102.6947021484375,\n              29.750070930806785\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.2108154296875,\n              29.7453016622136\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.2108154296875,\n              29.463514026304715\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"36","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1941-03-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Clyde P.","contributorId":10473,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Clyde","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":798285,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
