A cover of flat-lying Quaternary gravel obscures the outcrop of Pierre shale at many points on the two anticlines. Wells start in the upper part of the Pierre and penetrate all of the underlying Upper Cretaceous series to the top of the Dakota sandstone, where production of oil and carbon dioxide is obtained. The first prospecting for oil was reported in 1912, but it was not until December 1926 that oil was discovered in commercial quantities. </p><p>Two geologic sections across the anticlines, extending to the outcrop of the Dakota sandstone at the base of the Medicine Bow Range, to, the east, disclosed a marked thickening between this formation and a fossiliferous sandstone in the Pierre shale which was used as a key bed. Immediately beneath the Dakota sandstone along ore of these cross sections a sandy volcanic ash resembling that found at the horizon of the Mowry shale in Wyoming was discovered. However, it is considered here the top bed of the Morrison formation. </p><p>The impossibility of obtaining dips along the crests, owing to the cover of terrace gravel, made it necessary to construct ten structure sections across these anticlines, using the geometry of conic sections in their development. From the geometric figures developed structure contours were obtained graphically. </p><p>The occurrence of carbon dioxide in large volumes in association with petroleum on each of these anticlines provides an unusual problem in oil production. Experimental data relative to the physical properties of this gas offer an approach to the solution of the problem. The applicability of such data to actual operating conditions is yet to be tried, but the work of early investigators in the field of physical chemistry suggests the feasibility of mixing air with the carbon dioxide to assure continuity of production, which heretofore has not been attained in this area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir5","usgsCitation":"Miller, J.C., 1934, Geology of the North and South McCallum anticlines, Jackson County, Colorado, with special reference to petroleum and carbon dioxide: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 5, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir5.","productDescription":"27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":346216,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0005/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138384,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0005/report-thumb.jpg","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Jackson County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106.63330078125,\n              40.42290582797254\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.32156372070312,\n              40.42290582797254\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.32156372070312,\n              41.00373905329032\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.63330078125,\n              41.00373905329032\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.63330078125,\n              40.42290582797254\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e908","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, John Charles","contributorId":97884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"Charles","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147316,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In </span><span>the </span><span>nearby region the beds are intruded by diorite sills and granitic stocks. </span><span>Glacial drift, including silt deposited in a lake, covers much of the lower </span><span>slopes of the mountains and partly fills the valleys. </span></p><p><span>Incomplete records show a production of $200,000 in gold, mostly from the oxidized free-milling parts of quartz veins. Except a few in the Wallace formation the veins are found in sandstone and shale of the Prichard formation. They partly replace the country rock along fractures that commonly follow bedding planes but also cut across them at moderate angles. The veins average between 1 and 2 feet in thickness and reach a maximum of 6 feet. They are cut by faults of small displacement, with which the ore bodies are commonly associated.</span></p><p><span>Quartz forms 95 percent or more of the veins. Of the remainder, one or more of the minerals pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and pyrrhotite are relatively abundant, and chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, tetrahedrite, and scheelite are present sparingly. A little silver is present, and in some veins it exceeds the gold considerably.</span></p><p><span>In many veins an original quartz filling has been slightly brecciated or sheared by movement parallel to the walls. Sulphides and gold have been introduced along the shear planes, partly replacing the quartz and giving the vein a \"ribbon\" structure. The gold is closely associated with the sphalerite, and silver is more plentiful in the veins that carry galena. </span></p><p><span>As a rule oxidation has not extended far below the surface, and its chief product is limonite. Cerusite and anglesite are present in some veins, and a little malachite, azurite, pyromorphite, or manganese oxide occurs in a few. Native gold is present in both the oxidized and unoxidized ores. </span></p><p><span>Although mining of these veins in the past may have been unprofitable, that result was due partly, at least, to difficulties of transportation and milling. With improvement in roads and methods, not to mention appreciation in the value of gold, the deposits are believed to have a promising future. </span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/cir7","usgsCitation":"Gibson, R., 1934, Gold-quartz veins south of Libby, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 7, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir7.","productDescription":"25 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":384090,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0007/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139359,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0007/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","city":"Libby","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.66955566406249,\n              48.3416461723746\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.44708251953125,\n              48.3416461723746\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.44708251953125,\n              48.425555463221066\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.66955566406249,\n              48.425555463221066\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.66955566406249,\n              48.3416461723746\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4993","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gibson, Russell","contributorId":106101,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gibson","given":"Russell","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147762,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The quadrangle conta ins fragmentary exposures of Algonkian and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, extensive deposits of old volcanic strata, presumably Permian, not heretofore recognized in this part of Idaho, and a thick succession of Oligocene(?) lava and pyroclastic rocks. The Idaho batholith and its satellites extend into the quadrangle, and in addition there a re large masses of Tertiary granitic rock, not previously distinguished in Idaho, and many Tertiary dikes, some of which are genetically associated with contact-metamorphic deposits. The area contains injection gneiss of complex origin, largely related to the Idaho batholith but in part resulting from injection by ~he Tertiary granitic rocks under relatively light load. Orogenic movement took place in Algonkian, Paleozoic, and Tertiary time. There is a summit peneplain or par tial peneplain of Tertiary, perhaps Pliocene age, and the erosional history since its elevation has been complex. The ore deposits include lodes and placers. The lodes are related to both the Idaho batholith and the Tert iary intrusive rocks and have yielded gold and copper ore of a total value of about 1,000,000. Placers, largely formed in an interglacial inter val, have yielded about an equal amount. An excellent supply of artesian water is available from the Trinity reservoir at no great depth. The first flowing well in Somervell County was drilled in 1880, and the first flowing well in Glen Rose, the county seat, was drilled in 1881. Since 1880 more than 500 wells have been constructed, probably more than half of them prior to 1900. Many of these early wells have been abandoned, either because the well hole caved in as a result of the absence or deterioration of casing or because the wells ceased to yield water by natural flow. The artesian water has always been used chiefly for domestic supply and for watering stock. Only a comparatively small area of farm land is now irrigated. The quantity used to supply the needs of tourist camps and outdoor swimming pools forms a relatively large percentage of the total amount withdrawn from the artesian reservoir in Somervell County. The artesian water is contained chiefly in the permeable sandstone beds--the basal sands for the Trinity group. Some shallow wells of small capacity are supplied by water in the crevices and solution channels in limestone that apparently is near the base of the Glen Rose formation and probably derives its water by leakage from the underlying Trinity reservoir. The wells encounter from one to three aquifers, the number depending upon their depth and location. At and around Glen Rose, the area in which most of the flowing wells are concentrated, the first aquifer is the creviced portion of the limestone, which is encountered at about 50 feet but does not everywhere yield water. The second and third aquifers, both of which are part of the 'basal sands' of the Trinity group, are much more uniform and persistent; the second is encountered at Glen Rose at depths of 100 to 135 feet, and the third at depths of about 275 to 330 feet. The artesian reservoir is supplied by water that falls as rain or snow upon the outcrop of the 'basal sands' on the higher lands west and north of Somervell County. These permeable beds dip eastward and southeastward beneath the county and are covered by the less permeable beds of the overlying Glen Rose formation. As the water that reaches the zone of saturation percolates down the dip of the beds it is confined under artesian pressure, and wells that penetrate these beds at lower altitudes yield water by natural flow. Originally the artesian pressure was sufficient to raise the water in tightly cased wells in the northwestern part of Somervell County to a maximum altitude of about 750 feet above sea level, but at Glen Rose the original artesian head was probably not more than 710 feet. From the information avail- able it would appear that the original head of the water in the upper aquifers was not nearly as great as that of the lower aquifer. The head has declined generally throughout the county. At Glen Rose in June 1930 the artesian head of the water from the deepest aquifer of the Trinity reservoir was about 639 feet above sea level, and the head of the water from the upper aquifers was about 15 feet less. The decline in head still continues, but at a very much slower rate than formerly. With the decline in head the size of the area of artesian flow has decreased, though in recent years the shrinkage has been comparatively little. The draft from the artesian reservoir in Somervell County during the summer is estimated at about 1,000,000 gallons a day, distributed as follows: Domestic use, 150,000 gallons; stock use, 60,000 gallons; recreation pools, 250,000 gallons; irrigation, 180,000 gallons; and waste, not including underground leakage, 360,000 gallons. In winter the daily draft is probably about 370,000 gallons less than in summer. The 360,000 gallons a day permitted to flow from wells without being used for any beneficial purposes is an unnecessary drain upon the artesian reservoir.
