The urban and agricultural development in most areas of southern California have depended on the underground water‐resources of which more and more use has been made. It has been estimated that in the South Coastal Basin during the summer 90 per cent of the water‐supply for irrigation and other purposes developed locally is obtained from underground sources [see 1 of “References” at end of paper]. Because of the economic importance of this resource, measurements of the depth of water‐level are made regularly at hundreds of wells in the area to obtain knowledge of the draw‐down and replenishment.

The records are mainly analyses of 10‐day composites of daily samples, although there are several analyses of spot‐samples from some streams in the basin and about 4000 single determinations of chloride or sulphate in daily samples.
The need for a large number of analyses is shown by the fact that during the period 1925–35 the quantity of dissolved solids in 10‐day composites from the Colorado River at Grand Canyon ranged from 226 parts per million for June 11–20, 1929, to 1889 parts per million for. September 21–30, 1934. A series of analyses covering a whole year might be misleading. The weighted averages for the different years ranged from 491 parts per million for the year ending September 30, 1928, to 960 for the year ending September 30, 1934.

At some time between the second and third stages of deposition the solutions removed calcite, sericite, and chlorite from interstitial and included fragments of altered wall-rock in the veins and thereby produced honeycombed box-works of first- and second-stage minerals, chiefly specularite, quartz, and chalcopyrite, on the walls of which minerals of later stages were deposited. It is suggested that the leaching solutions may have been acid and that the leaching was done by the fresh solutions of the third stage before their acidity was neutralized through reactions along their channelways. A mechanism is suggested to account for their presence at places previously traversed by alkaline or neutral solutions.

F. Duggleby gave me a specimen of orbicular chromite from the Octopus claim, in Siskiyou County, Calif., showing two generations of chromite, one older than the associated olivine and one younger. In November, I93I, I examined briefly a number of deposits in northern California, in search for chromite showing similar and related textures. Some of the more unusual and genetically significant occurrences are described in this paper.
Most of the chromite localities here described are in Siskiyou County, northern California. Localities I and 2 are in the Seiad Quadrangle, where a belt of chromite-bearing dunite, striking northwest, extends from McGuffy Creek, near Scott Bar, into Oregon. Other deposits are in southern Siskiyou, Shasta, and Trinity Counties.
