E. Meinzer, Outline of ground-water hydrology, U.S. Geol. Sur. Water-Supply Paper 494, p. 28, 1923). It is a measure of the quantity of water that a formation will yield when it is drained by lowering of the water-table. The determination of the specific yield is essential in many quantitative ground-water investigations.</p><p>In 1931 a pumping-test was made in the Platte River Valley, in Nebraska, to determine by Thiem's method the permeability of the water-bearing sand and gravel that underlie the Valley. This test, which constitutes a part of a cooperative investigation by the Conservation and Survey Department of the University of Nebraska and the United States Geological Survey, was briefly described in the 1932 Transactions of the American Geophysical Union (p. 393). The well was pumped continuously for 48 hours, and measurements of the discharge were made every 30 minutes. During the period of pumping and after pumping stopped about 5,000 measurements were made of the depths to the water-surfaces in 80 observation-wells, which were located on lines radiating from the pumped well to distances up to 1,200 feet. Instrumental levels were run to the measuring points on each of the wells so that the altitudes of the water-surfaces could be determined for any time. From the data obtained in this test the average coefficient of permeability was computed to be about 700. In the present paper a method is presented for determining the specific yield of the water-bearing material from the data collected in this test, and the results of the computations are given. This method for determining specific yield was suggested by Meinzer (O. E. Meinzer, Outline of methods for estimating ground-water supplies, U.S. Geol. The volcanic breccia, which consists principally of phonolitic material, appears to fill several elongate or elliptical funnel‐shaped openings that coalesce upward and taper downward into roots. Local adjustments that followed the principal explosive eruptions developed fissure‐systems in the breccia parallel and transverse to the older fissure‐systems and permitted the intrusion of dikes and irregular masses of latite‐phonolite and syenite within the breccia mass. Mild regional readjustment, caused by compression in a nearly north‐south direction, ensued and reopened these fissure‐systems within and around the breccia mass. It was followed by the relatively widespread intrusion of dikes and irregular masses of phonolite. They consist of Carboniferous sedimentary formations on a pre-Cambrian basement and are covered by Tertiary volcanic rocks.</p><p>Volcanism in the District was preceded by considerable faulting, tilting, and uplifting very probably in early Tertiary time. The initial volcanic extrusion consisted of latite flows and tuffs now resting unconformably on the Granite Mountain fault-block in the northern part of the District. Subsequent extrusions consisted of alternations of andesites, rhyolites, and latites, and have a minimum thickness of approximately 4,000 feet. Graben faulting, probably in compensation for the effusion of the large volumes of lava, followed and some of the major faults were subsequently the sites of the intrusion of monzonitic and granitic stocks. Thus the philosopher Thales, about 600 B.C., taught that the springs derive their&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;from the ocean through subterranean channels and that the&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;is lifted to the springs by rook‐pressure. The theory of rock‐pressure has had a number of recent advocates, chief among whom was the British geologist, J. W. Gregory, but apparently no effective attempt was made by any of them to apply critical data to the problem. Because of the proximity to the ocean in these areas, in some respects the geologic and hydrologic conditions that govern the occurrence and movement of ground-water are quite different from those in inland areas, and to properly interpret them the ground-water hydrologist must avail himself of facts developed by the oceanographer.</p><p>These conditions are encountered in a marginal zone that in different localities may extend only a few feet or many miles inland from the coast, and presumably for greater or less distances out beneath the ocean. These special conditions have been recognized and extensively studied for many years, for example, in the lowland-area of Holland that lies between the Zuider Zee and the North Sea, and on Long Island, New York. Within recent years more or less attention has been given to these conditions in many of the coastal states of the United States, and in the Hawaiian Islands and Cuba. The description and use of the&nbsp;</span>deep<span>‐</span>well<span>&nbsp;current‐meter on&nbsp;</span>well<span>‐</span>exploration<span>&nbsp;work in Hawaii and New Mexico has already appeared in published literature (John McCombs and A. G. Fiedler, Methods of exploring and repairing leaky artesian wells, U.S. Geol. Sur. Water‐Supply Paper 596, pp. 1–32, 1928) on hydrology but recent developments in the application of electrical conductivity‐measurements for determining the&nbsp;</span>salinity<span>&nbsp;of water in wells have not heretofore been presented. In addition to being of considerable scientific importance in connection with problems of ground‐water hydrology, the practical value of locating the place at which salt water is entering a&nbsp;</span>well<span>&nbsp;and contaminating a potable water‐supply is great. These effects of the earthquake are reported briefly in this paper.</p><p>According to Dr. Byerly (personal communication, February 9, 1933), in charge of the seismograph‐station of the University of California at Berkeley, the earthquake‐ vibrations at that place began at 10<sup>h</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>11<sup>m</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>00<sup>s</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>p.m., Pacific Standard Time, December 20, 1932, and continued three hours on the records of his most sensitive instruments. He reports further that the maximum double amplitude of the Earth‐motion at Berkeley was of the order of two mm and that the north‐south and east‐west components of the amplitude were approximately equal. In the Mokelumne Area, which centers about the City of Lodi, 57 miles north 70° east from the seismograph‐station at Berkeley, the pronounced initial Earth‐shock caused chandeliers to sway, upset some bric‐a‐brac, and in at least one building opened a few cracks in the interior plastering. Individual issues contain information on volcanic activity, volcano research, and volcano monitoring in Hawaii. Information on volcanic activity at other locations is also occasionally included.</p><p>The Volcano Letter was published by HVO through multiple changes in administration, including the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association (1925 to 1932), the U.S. Geological Survey (1932 to 1935), the Department of the Interior (1935 to 1938), and the University of Hawai‘i (1938 to 1955). Issues 1-262 were published weekly from January 1, 1925, to January 2, 1930, and consisted of a single page of text. Issues 263-384, also published weekly, from January 9, 1930, to May 5, 1932, were generally longer—four pages— and provided more detail on volcanic activity, including photographs, maps, and plots. Weekly issues 385-387, published May 12-26, 1932, were a single page of text due to budget reductions brought on by the Great Depression. Budget restrictions reduced the publishing frequency to monthly for issues 388-428, covering the period of June 1932 to October 1935; these issues were generally shorter, 1-2 pages, and sometimes featured figures. From November 1935 to July 1938, issues 429-461 remained monthly but increased in length (generally eight pages) and featured figures frequently. Issues 462-530, published over the period of August 1938 to December 1955, varied in length from 2-15 pages, but were published quarterly, rather than monthly.</p><p>Six of the Volcano Letters are Not included in this report are such decisions as have either been vacated, or, being revised, have been replaced by new decisions listed under the revised name or spelling.</p><p>Several thousand earlier decisions for features and places in the United States, Alaska, and the Philippine Islands have been amplified, brought up to date, and made to agree in form and content with the decisions rendered in recent years.</p><p>So great have been the changes since 1914 in the geographic nomenclature of the Eastern Hemisphere that the board deemed it advisable to vacate all the names as given in the fifth and earlier reports for places and features not within the United States and its outlying territories and possessions. In place of these a new list has been drawn up comprising some 2,500 of the more important names, which are in accord with the changes which have taken place since the World War. These new decisions, printed in 1932 in a separate pamphlet with the title, \"First Report on Foreign Geographic Names,\" have been consolidated in this volume with domestic names in one alphabetical arrangement.</p><p>In the fifth report the Philippine and the Hawaiian names were each separately listed at the close of that volume.
