It has the merit of being readily applicable to field-conditions. It is, moreover, of convenient size, the coefficients of most water-bearing materials being integers of two or three figures, that is, between 10 and 1000. It was adopted in place of Slichter's “transmission-constant” (U.S. Geol. On the other hand, it is conceivable that too much of the limited time might be consumed in preliminary discussions of basic principles, methods of analysis, and formulas dealing with either magnitude or frequency of floods, if unanimity of opinion among several professional groups must precede the main work under the project authorized. A detailed consideration of the mineralogy of the mixed sulphide ore deposits clearly shows that they in turn are divisible into groups, referred to as hotter and intermediate mesothermal deposits. These groups, however, because of complications in structural control, are not ideally arranged from the standpoint of zoning.Emmons, Irving, and Loughlin noted that barite was a conspicuous gangue mineral in certain outlying deposits on the west slope of the Mosquito Range. The junior author during 1928-1931 had an opportunity to study the outlying deposits over an area of twenty square miles, which includes mines near the heads of Iowa Gulch and Empire Gulch, and the Weston Pass district (Fig. 1), and found that these baritic deposits form a somewhat distinct outer zone in which the primary ore consists of galena and light-colored zinc blende, with small amounts of silver and practically no gold, in a gangue of barite, jasperoid, and crystalline quartz. There is also recognized a still more remote though poorly defined zone in which the same sulphides are present but jasperoid is less conspicuous and barite is practically absent, whereas dolomite is the characteristic gangue mineral. The deposits in these two outer zones are fissure-fillings and comparatively small replacement bodies. They contrast strongly with the sulphide deposits in the heart of the Leadville district and are assigned to the outer mesothermal and epithermal zones. As they have not been described before, general features of these deposits are given in some detail, followed by their relations to the deposits within the Leadville district. Analogies are also drawn with similar deposits in other districts. In the preparation of this paper the authors have been impressed with the confusion that may result from too simple a conception of zoning. For a proper conception of Leadville, the geologist must have sufficient regard for structural conditions, must make due allowance for successive stages of mineral deposition within a small block of ground or even within a single ore shoot, and must also allow for the reactions between minerals formed at an early stage and solutions introduced during a late stage. The effects of such complications in the Leadville district might give the impression that certain minerals found in one of the inner zones were formed at relatively high temperatures, but close study of paragenesis indicates late deposition at relatively low temperatures. Again, as already stated, there is sufficient inconsistency in the distribution of certain varieties of deposits to give a confused impression of zonal arrangement unless the influence of structure on the circulation of ore-forming solutions is appreciated. The field facts give a far more complex picture than might be anticipated from a simple statement of the theory of zoning.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.29.3.215","usgsCitation":"Loughlin, G.F., and Behre, C.H., 1934, Zoning of ore deposits in and adjoining the Leadville District, Colorado: Economic Geology, v. 29, no. 3, p. 215-254, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.29.3.215.","productDescription":"40 p.","startPage":"215","endPage":"254","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386782,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","city":"Leadville","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -106.3421630859375,\n 39.23331686919235\n ],\n [\n -106.24191284179688,\n 39.23331686919235\n ],\n [\n -106.24191284179688,\n 39.279041894366785\n ],\n [\n -106.3421630859375,\n 39.279041894366785\n ],\n [\n -106.3421630859375,\n 39.23331686919235\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"29","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1934-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Loughlin, G. They originated in an early stage of the structural development of the region, and are equivalent to the marginal thrusts observed in the Yose-mite and along the Mother Lode system. As such, the vein fractures are of local origin, since they are entirely restricted to the neighborhood of intrusive contacts. As the area of consolidation within the Sierra Nevada batholith increased, larger units were affected by tectonic stresses, and joints were formed which belong to a system of regional extent. As this system has been observed over an area of at least 7500 square miles, its regional character seems proven. Basic dikes and aplites follow the crossing system, and thus indicate that the earliest crossings were formed when magma to fill them was still available. Both fissure systems repeatedly served for adjustment of later stresses, as can be proved by relative mutual displacements and by the repeated fracturing and renewed deposition of quartz within the vein fissures. It is probable that these later stresses were regional in character.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.29.1.39","usgsCitation":"Johnston, W.D., and Cloos, E., 1934, Structural history of the fracture systems at Grass Valley, California: Economic Geology, v. 29, no. 1, p. 39-54, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.29.1.39.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"39","endPage":"54","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386814,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Grass Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.22039794921874,\n 39.155622393423215\n ],\n [\n -120.89355468749999,\n 39.155622393423215\n ],\n [\n -120.89355468749999,\n 39.2832938689385\n ],\n [\n -121.22039794921874,\n 39.2832938689385\n ],\n [\n -121.22039794921874,\n 39.155622393423215\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"29","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1934-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnston, W. Individual issues contain information on volcanic activity, volcano research, and volcano monitoring in Hawaii. Information on volcanic activity at other locations is also occasionally included.

The Volcano Letter was published by HVO through multiple changes in administration, including the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association (1925 to 1932), the U.S. Geological Survey (1932 to 1935), the Department of the Interior (1935 to 1938), and the University of Hawai‘i (1938 to 1955). Issues 1-262 were published weekly from January 1, 1925, to January 2, 1930, and consisted of a single page of text. Issues 263-384, also published weekly, from January 9, 1930, to May 5, 1932, were generally longer—four pages— and provided more detail on volcanic activity, including photographs, maps, and plots. Weekly issues 385-387, published May 12-26, 1932, were a single page of text due to budget reductions brought on by the Great Depression. Budget restrictions reduced the publishing frequency to monthly for issues 388-428, covering the period of June 1932 to October 1935; these issues were generally shorter, 1-2 pages, and sometimes featured figures. From November 1935 to July 1938, issues 429-461 remained monthly but increased in length (generally eight pages) and featured figures frequently. Issues 462-530, published over the period of August 1938 to December 1955, varied in length from 2-15 pages, but were published quarterly, rather than monthly.

Six of the Volcano Letters are In addition to descriptive observations, the record books also contain hundreds of annotated photographs and sketches, as well as temperature and transit measurements. When photographs are included, the camera settings and film types used are noted. The field notes, sketches, and photographs used to compile the record books provide an unparalleled record of eruptive activity and were the basis for published newspaper reports and periodic bulletins, such as the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory bulletins and The volcano letter.

HVO staff also painstakingly prepared a second copy of each early record book, virtually identical to the original, complete with photographs and sketches. The original version of the record book was kept at HVO, while the duplicate went to the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association, which was created by a group of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, businessmen to promote HVO’s work. The Hawaiian Volcano Research Association, which dissolved decades ago, held the duplicate books in Honolulu, where they were more readily accessible to the public. After 1923, HVO stopped duplicating the books—at least, no duplicate records for subsequent years have been found. During the decade of the 1940s, preparation of the record books stopped altogether. In 1952, compilation of the record books resumed and continued, with long gaps, until early 1966. Entries in these later volumes are sparse, and these books are little more than photo albums of the episodic eruptions of Kīlauea.

The original record books were held at HVO and, later, at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. In 1972, the original record books for the years 1912 through 1939 were transferred to the Bishop Museum, in Honolulu, for safekeeping. These record books are now stored in archival boxes at that institution (accession number 172.265). The duplicate set of record books held by the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association were bound into volumes at an unknown date and turned over to the U.S. Geological Survey. This set of record books, spanning 1912 through 1923, is now housed in the rare book room of the U.S. Geological Survey Library in Reston, Virginia (catalog number 220(950) H3d). The record books for 1952 through early 1966 remain in storage at HVO. After 1955, typed annotations were no longer placed in the record books, and only photographs, most with captions, were included. Although the volumes titled “Record Book” end with the 1955 volume, the photograph albums that followed are similar, and the record book designation is retained for simplicity. Note that the photographs in these albums were not all originally arranged in chronological order.
","language":"English","publisher":"Hawaiian Volcano Observatory","usgsCitation":"Hawaiian The coal field from Gallup eastward toward Mount Taylor, with a measured section of pre-Dakota(?) rocks near Navajo Church","docAbstract":"
The report describes the geology and coal deposits of the southwestern part of the San Juan Basin, N.Mex. The field lies northeast of the town of Gallup, on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, and is an irregular tract of about 630 square miles in central and west-central McKinley County; it includes the southeast corner of the Navajo Indian Reservation. Settlement is confined to the white families at a few trading posts and the Indian agency at Crown Point and to scattered Navajo Indians. The land forms, drainage, vegetation, and climate are those typical of the highland in the semiarid Southwest.

The investigation disclosed complicated relations of the Mancos shale and the Mesaverde formation, of Upper Cretaceous age, and a marked variation in the stratigraphic boundary between them. At the western edge of the field, as in the adjoining Gallup coal district, the Mancos consists of about 725 feet of marine shale almost wholly of Benton (lower Colorado) age. It is overlain by about 1,800 feet of chiefly estuarine and fluviatile deposits that represent the lower part of the Mesaverde formation. In ascending order the Mesaverde here consists of the Gallup sandstone member (which includes local lenses of valuable coal), the Dilco coal member, the Bartlett barren member, the Gibson coal member, and the Allison barren member. Eastward through the field the outcrops extend obliquely across the trend of old shore lines out into the ancient basin of marine deposition, and some of the beds consequently show a progressive lateral change into rocks of littoral and marine types. The Gallup sandstone member is in part replaced by marine shale of the Mancos. The upper part of the Dilco coal member is replaced by the Dalton sandstone member, and still farther east the bottom of the Dalton and the top of the remaining Dilco are replaced by the Mulatto tongue of the Mancos shale. The Bartlett barren member becomes coal-bearing and thus merges with the Gibson. The Gibson coal member is split by the thick Hosta sandstone member, which toward the east and northeast is in turn split by the Satan tongue of the Mancos shale, of upper Niobrara (upper Colorado) age.

In general the structure of the rocks is simple, showing a gentle northward dip into the San Juan Basin. At the west edge of the field the rocks dip steeply west in the north end of the prominent ridges known locally as the Hogback. In the eastern part there is a series of pronounced folds, whose crests and troughs retain the gentle basinward dip but whose limbs are steep monoclines that in places are faulted.

The coal is of subbituminous rank and of fairly good grade. The coal beds are very irregular and lenticular. Those in the Gallup and Dilco members are of comparatively little importance, reaching a thickness of 4 to 5 feet in only a few places and, in general, being less than 3 feet thick. The coal beds of the Gibson, especially of its lower part, are more numerous and thicker, measurements of 4 to 6 feet thick being fairly common and one bed showing a thickness of 12 feet for more than a mile. No commercial mining has been undertaken in this field, but a few small mines have been used to supply trading posts and the Indian schools at Crown Point and Tohatchi.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geology and fuel resources of the southern part of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico (Bulletin 860)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/b860A","usgsCitation":"Sears, J., 1934, Part 1.
