Water-level measurements made in 50 wells are presented in this report. Information is also presented on groundwater withdrawals from the Hueco Bolson by El Paso and Ciudad Juarez municipal wells, by industrial and military wells, and by wells in the Chaparral, New Mexico, area that have been used for both irrigation and municipal purposes. Data from five streamflow-gaging stations, automatic sediment samplers, and two water quality monitors are presented. The sediment samplers and monitors are located at two of the streamflow-gaging stations. Climate data including mean, maximum, and minimum air temperature and relative humidity, daily solar radiation, mean wind velocity, and mean wind direction are reported for one site. Daily precipitation data are reported for three sites and snow-source data are reported for one site. Glacial-meltwater streams that deeply incise unstable pyroclastic and related flow deposits typically from debris flows when high discharge rates cause slope failures within steep-walled gorges. The landslide material either adsorbs streamflow quickly and becomes a slurry or it briefly dams the stream and converts to a debris flow as breaching occurs. All glacial-meltwater streams on Mount Shasta have been repeated debris-flow activity during the last 500 years. During this period, large-magnitude, potentially destructive flows on Mount Shasta have occurred at a rate of four per century, but smaller flows contained by stream channels may be 10 to 20 times more numerous. The smaller debris flows on Mount Shasta pose little hazard to human life or property, whereas larger, out-of-channel flows could cause minor damage. Only the City of McCloud and inhabited areas on the Whitney-Bolam fan appear to be threatened by possible debris-flow activity. None of the streams lacking glacial meltwater have had significant debris-flow activity during late Holocene time. Sediment yields from upper fan areas of Mount Shasta are very high, but most of the sediment, moved by debris flows from upper slopes is redeposited on lower fan areas, locally causing extensive and rapid aggradation of the fan surface. Little sediment enters a through-flowing stream network. Correspondingly high denudation rates in the sediment source areas for debris flows (the deep gorges) suggest that a high frequency of debris flows may be unique in recent centuries. Structurally, it is part of a continent-wide \"tectonic collage\" consisting of (1) Archean cratonic elements (&gt;2500 Ma) and remnants of Early Proterozoic (-1,900-2,100 Ma) cratonic cover, (2) anastomosing Early Proterozoic orogenic belts culminating at 1,850 Ma and -1,650 Ma, which partly enclose and marginally affect the Archean cratons, and (3) intracratonic igneous and sedimentary rocks, mainly of Middle Proterozoic age but including an older rhyolite-granite terrane (-1,760 Ma) and somewhat younger, scattered quartzite, assigned by Dott (1983) to the \"Baraboo interval\".</p><p>The map was compiled as part of a cooperative federal-state project from 1:500,000-scale maps submitted by respective state geological surveys showing basement drill holes, lithotypes or sketchy geologic map units, and basement topography, contoured at 200-foot intervals. In compiling the map, available aeromagnetic (Zietz, 1982; Burchett, 1985) and gravity anomaly maps (Hildenbrand and others, 1982) were utilized to define insofar as possible the trend, extent, and boundaries of individual rock bodies, and all available isotopic age data were used.</p><p>The principal geologic contribution resulting from the compilation is the delineation of a major buried, northwest-trending Early Proterozoic orogen, named the Central Plains orogen (Sims and Peterman, in press). The area is characterized by a series of generally north-trending mountain ranges separated by alluviumfilled basins that are partially filled with sedimentary deposits eroded from the adjacent mountains and lacustrine sediments deposited by Lake Bonneville. Most of the intermountain basins are elongated in the northward direction, but some are almost equidimensional.</p><p>This report was prepared as part of the Great Basin Regional AquiferSystem Analysis (RASA) program. The report is intended to make well data from the MX-missile siting study readily available to water-resource managers and the general public. It includes well data obtained in areas for which little or no such data have been published previously. </p><p>Well-drilling and well-completion data were compiled by Ertec, Inc. (formerly Fugro National, Inc.) under contract with the U. S. Air Force. Those data along with aquifer test data, geophysical logs, and drillers1 or geologists1 logs were obtained from Ertec, Inc. under an agreement with the U.S. Air Force. The authors thank the officials of both Ertec, Inc. and the U.S. Air Force for their helpful cooperation. </p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey obtained accurate locations of the test wells (pi. 1) and accurate water-level measurements in those wells (table 1). Chemical analyses of water samples collected from several of the test wells drilled in the Sevier Desert have been published in a report by Enright and Holmes (1982, table 5).</p><p>Test drilling for the MX-missile siting study consisted of two parts, the verification phase and the water-resources phase. The verification jhase was designed to obtain information necessary for the design and construction of the MX-basing system. Numerous small diameter wells were bored with depths ranging from 92 to 205 feet. Two-inch diameter JVC casing with the bottom 20 feet perforated was installed in each borehole. The water-resources phase was designed to determine ground-water availibility and to estimate the effects of ground-water withdrawals required for the construction of the MX-basing system. Six large-diameter production test wells were drilled along with associated small-diameter observation wells. Depths ranged from 310 to 1,399 feet. Lithologic logs for selected production test wells or associated observation wells are listed in table 2. Geophysical logs and aquifer test data are available in the files of the U. S. A similar profile defines losing and gaining reaches for the average 3-day minimum discharge, 20-year recurrence interval, and the variability of that discharge along the river channels. The average 3-day minimum discharge, 20-year recurrence interval, ranged from 2.4 cubic feet per second for the site on East Piney River to 45.6 cubic feet per second at the Vernon gage, farthest site downstream in the study area. On the Piney River, the lowest 3-day, 20-year discharge, occurs at river mile 23.5, 0.1 river mile downstream from the confluence of the East and West Piney Rivers. Comparison of discharge measurements to recorded August discharges at the Vernon gage shows that the measurements represent base-flow conditions in the Piney River basin. The measurements and analyses can be used to formulate water management plans for use during droughts.
