The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) Bulletin series was an informal publication issued between the years 1913 to 1929. Individual issues contain information on volcanic and earthquake activity, volcano research, and volcano monitoring in Hawaii, and issues often included photographs, sketches, and data plots. Information on volcanic activity at other locations is also occasionally included.
The Bulletin series was published by HVO through the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association. Weekly Bulletins (initially called Reports) were issued between June 28, 1913, and July 1, 1914. Bulletins were issued monthly after July 1, 1914, though they were still named Weekly Bulletins until January 1919. Starting with the February 1919 issue, the Bulletins were named Monthly Bulletins, and they continued to be issued monthly until the series ceased in July 1929. During a single year, 1915, Seismometric Bulletins were also issued quarterly. These four issues contain summaries of seismic observations recorded by the then-nascent Whitney Laboratory of Seismology, located underground in a vault near the summit of Kīlauea.
Two of the bulletins are misnumbered:
• April 1916 volume IV no. 4 incorrectly says April 1915 volume III no. 4
• September 1916 volume IV no. 9 incorrectly says September 1916 volume VI no. 9

It includes most of Gallatin and Madison Counties, in Montana, and some contiguous parts of Idaho and Wyoming. Within it are several broad fertile valleys and a number of prominent mountain ranges. A considerable part is underlain by a bed of phosphate rock which occurs in the Phosphoria formation, of Permian age, and is elevated to the surface of the mountainous area. In most of the middle and southwestern parts of the region this deposit is about 2 feet thick; locally it is 3 feet or more. Outcrops of beds in which the deposit is more than 6 inches thick aggregate more than 200 miles in length. Toward the northeast the deposit thins out, and its limit in that direction is represented fairly accurately by a line drawn from Yellowstone Park northwestward through Salesville to Willow Creek, on Jefferson Kiver. Its thicker parts contain 45 to 65 per cent of tricalcium phosphate.
In this region the phosphate deposit is thinner and of poorer quality than in the adjoining parts of Montana on the west and northwest, where it is commonly 4 feet thick and contains 65 to 70 per cent of tricalcium phosphate. In southeastern Idaho the deposit is still thicker and richer.

A detailed report on the subject was submitted in the spring of 1925 to the State Survey for publication as a bulletin, and the writing of the present report was completed in March, 1926. The field work was done mainly between October 22 and November 2, 1921, and April 26 and July 18, 1923; but in October, 1924, a visit was made to the mine at Napier. The writer was assisted in the field in 1921 by. R. W. Smith, assistant geologist, and in 1923 by C. C. Anderson, topographer, both of the Tennessee Survey. Mr. Wilbur A. Nelson, State geologist at the time the work was in progress, visited several mines with the writer and on these occasions as well as many times during the preparation of the report rendered helpful suggestions and guidance. Mr. H. D. Miser, of the United States Geological Survey, State geologist from September 1, 1925, to July 1, 1926, who is especially familiar with the southern part of this area, also cooperated heartily in the preparation of this report; and Mr. H. W. Davis, of the United States Bureau of Mines, compiled the statistical data on iron ore and pig iron. To all these gentlemen the writer desires to express his appreciation. Acknowledgments are also due to the officials and employees of the iron mining and manufacturing companies and to people living in the vicinity of inactive mining properties for their courteous attention and for the large amount of information furnished.
In the present paper the general features of the region and of the iron-ore deposits are delineated, but only a few typical ore deposits in each county are described, as the State bulletin will contain detailed descriptions of all properties.

Although no potash has been produced from these brines in the last few years, a continued interest in the area has been shown by a large number of filings, in different parts of the desert, under the potash law of October 2, 1917 (40 Stat. 297), and the regulations issued under that law by the Department of the Interior on March 21, 1918, in Circular 594 (46 L. D. 323).
As the basis for appropriate action on these permit, lease, and patent filings the Department of the Interior required information concerning the mode of occurrence, distribution, and general characteristics of the potassium-bearing brines in this region. Field investigation was accordingly undertaken for the primary purpose of satisfying these requirements.
The work was done by the Geological Survey and the General Land Office in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines furnished an autotruck and a mechanic, who also assisted in the field work, and, for a period of a month, a mine rescue car, which permitted the establishment of headquarters in parts of the desert far from sources of supplies and water. The General Land Office surveyed the boundaries of townships over the desert and located the drill holes from which samples of brine were taken.
The writer directed the work for the Geological Survey, and the analyses of the samples of brine were made in the Survey's chemical laboratory. The greater part of the field work was done between April 17 and July 7, 1925, and the work was finished during the two periods August 17-26 and September 30 to October 2. Adverse weather throughout the season hindered the work.

The discovery of high-grade ore by the Gilbert brothers on the Last Hope claim in 1924 led to a boom during which the region was extensively prospected and claims were staked out covering not only the Gilbert district but another area from which the barren later andesite has been eroded, known as South Gilbert. The total production for the years 1917-1925, according to data furnished by Mr. V. C. Heikes, U. S. Bureau of Mines, amounted to $24,807, about two-thirds of which was from gold.

The work was. done under the supervision of Henry G. Ferguson, in charge of the field work in the Hawthorne quadrangle, and the writer was accompanied by L. B. Spencer, mining engineer, of Mina, Nev., whose intimate knowledge of the district greatly facilitated the study and to whom the writer is indebted for much valuable information. Data on the general geology of the district, collected by Messrs. Ferguson and Cathcart, were freely drawn upon.
The deposits of the Pilot Mountains were first described by Knopf* and later briefly by Ransome.2

Metals and nonmetals except fuels","docAbstract":"The Geological Survey's \"Contributions to economic geology\" are published in two parts, one including papers on metals and nonmetals except fuels and the other including papers on mineral fuels. As the subtitle indicates, most of the papers in these volumes are of three classes (1) short papers describing as thoroughly as conditions will permit areas or deposits on which no other report is likely to be prepared; (2) brief notes on mining districts or economic deposits whose examination has been merely incidental to other work; and (3) preliminary reports on economic investigations the results of which are to be published later in more detailed form. Although these papers set forth mainly the practical results of economic investigations, they include brief theoretical discussions and summary statements of conclusions if these appear to require prompt publication.
