One area contains Jabal Tuwalah and Jabal Awja, and the other is at the north end of Jabal Safad. Both pan concentrates and the rock samples in the Jabal Tuwalah and Jabal Awja areas contain high concentrations of Be, F, La, Mo, Nb, Pb, Th, U, Sn, Y, and Zr, and the plutons underlying those areas are characterized by high total-count radioactivity.</p>\n<p>These elements are sited in highly evolved alkalic granites and have not been concentrated into a potentially metalliferous deposit related to a hydrothermal ore system. They may be a potential metal source of the future.</p>\n<p>Pan-concentration samples collected from wadis draining the north end of Jabal Safad contain anomalous Sn, Mo, Pb, and La. Four samples contain 250 to 1,000 ppm of tin. The tin anomaly is associated with a small aplitic pluton intrusive into the Jabal Safad alkalic granite complex. A brief reconnaissance of the area did not reveal any greisen or cassiterite mineralization. The Upper Floridan aquifer is the principal source of potable water in the area. Water level measurements were made on approximately 1,000 wells and on several springs. The potentiometric surface is shown mostly by 5-foot contour intervals. In the Fernandina Beach area of Nassau County, a 40-foot interval is used to show a deep cone of depression. The potentiometric surface ranged from 130 feet above sea level in Polk County to 91 feet below sea level in Nassau County. Water levels in key wells were mostly about 1 foot below average for September but were trending upward in response to the rainfall that broke the drought-like dry season. Most levels in the district were below the levels of September 1984. Declines of 3 to 5 feet from September 1984 levels were common in the midwestern part of the district. However, most September 1985 levels ranged from 2 to 7 feet above those of May 1985. Access is by way of the Al Madihah &ndash; Ha&rsquo;il paved highway to Hulayfah or Gazzalah, thence by unimproved road to Zarghat, located a few km from the eastern margin and the southeast corner of the quadrangle. Desert tracks lead from Zarghat to the remainder of the area, but a large part of the quadrangle is underlain by the Tertiary and Quaternary Harrat Ithnayn; access over this terrain by vehicle is difficult.</p>\n<p>The area has low relief, marked only by Paleozoic sandstone remnants, volcanic cones in the harrat, and Jabal Bushra. Drainage on the harrat trends generally northerly, but rainfall is low. The climate is typical of inland Saudi Arabia, with summer day temperatures reaching 45-50&deg;C, and with cold nights. Temperatures can reach 0&deg;C in winter. The surface is mapped by determining the altitude of water levels in a network of wells and is represented on maps by contours that connect points of equal altitude. Maps of the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer in west-central Florida are prepared semiannually by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Maps for May and September show, respectively, the potentiometric surfaces of the normally expected annual low and high water level conditions. The potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer is shown for September 1985. Most of the water level data were collected during September 9-13. Supplemental data were collected by other agencies and companies. The map represents water level conditions near the end of the summer rainy season when groundwater withdrawals for agricultural use are low. Hence, the potentiometric surface is near its highest level for the year. Dissolved-solids concentrations in the streams are small, less than 132 milligrams per liter in 50 percent of the samples analyzed from each of the sites. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the Neches River at Evadale (08041000) generally are large, exceeding 8.0 milligrams per liter in more than 50 percent of the samples analyzed. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations in samples from this site have not exceeded 1.8 milligrams per liter and 0.20 milligram per liter, respectively.</p>\n<p>Trend tests for dissolved solids and major ions indicate that small downtrends in total alkalinity, dissolved calcium, and hardness occurred in the Meches River at Evadale (08041000) and Pine Island Bayou near Sour Lake (08041700). It is named after Wadi Khulab, which flows westward across the central part of the area. Approximately one-third of the quadrangle, comprising the mapped area, lies within Saudi Arabia; the remainder lies within the Yemen Arab Republic. Delineation of the international boundary should not be considered definitive.</p>\n<p>From west to east, the physiography of the mapped area consists of a portion of the Tiharmat Asir, or coastal plain, extending from the Jizan quadrangle to the west (Blank and Gettings, 1984), a northwest-trending hill range close to the western border of the quadrangle; a pediplain; and the foothills of the Red Sea escarpment. The top of the escarpment is about 50 km east of the mapped area, in the Yemen Arab Republic.
