Where naleds occur, stream channels are wide and often form braided channels. Their distribution can be related to changes in stream gradient and to the occurrence of springs. Large naleds, such as on the Kongakut River, often remain through the summer melt season to form the nucleus of icing in the succeeding winter. Major naleds also are likely to significantly influence the nature of permafrost in their immediate vicinity. The map of naleds may serve as a guide to the occurrence of year-round flowing water, a sparse commodity in northern Alaska.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr7791","usgsCitation":"Harden, D., Barnes, P.W., and Reimnitz, E., 1977, Distribution and character of naleds in northeastern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-91, 20 [i.e. 28] leaves :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;27 cm.; (31 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7791.","productDescription":"20 [i.e. 28] leaves :ill., maps (1 fold.) ;27 cm.; (31 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143041,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0091/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37061,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0091/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dd2f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harden, Deborah","contributorId":99980,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harden","given":"Deborah","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159519,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barnes, Peter W.","contributorId":6042,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barnes","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Reimnitz, Erk","contributorId":17963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reimnitz","given":"Erk","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

For the other elements, the abundances follow geochemical norms for crustal distribution: (1) Fe, Nb, and Zr in Holocene weathering products; (2) Ca and Sr in Pliocene limestone; (3) Mo in Pliocene(?) or Miocene(?) dikes; (4) Be, La, and Sn in Miocene(?) alkalic granite; (5) As, Be, and La in Tertiary and/or Cretaceous felsic tuff; (6) V in Tertiary and/or Cretaceous carbonaceous sedimentary rocks interbedded with volcanic rocks; (7) Be, La, Sn, and Zr in Tertiary and/or Cretaceous undivided volcanics; (8) Sn and W in Precambrian felsite and pegmatite; (9) Co, Cr, Ni, and Ti in Precambrian mafic rocks; (10) Mg and Sr in Precambrian marble and calcsilicate rocks; (11) Y in Precambrilan schist; (12) B and Sc dispersed in rocks of many ages; and (13) Ag, Ba, Bi, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Sb, Sn, and Zn in a hydrothermal replacement deposit in Precambrian sediment. None of the rocks contained as much as 205 ppm equivalent uranium. The highest values for Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd were obtained on a sample of hydrothermally altered siltstone not personally collected by the writers. It was said to have come from the Ma'rib area in the eastern part of the Yemen Arab Republic. The source must be studied, because this single sample is high-grade base-metal ore. \r\n\r\nAmong the samples collected by the writers, the economically most significant are altered tuffs, ignimbrites, and felsites exposed between Jibal Hufash and Manakhah on the road from Hudaydah to San'a'. They are strongly anomalous for As and weakly anomalous, variously, for Hg, Mo, and Pb, which elements may constitute an epigenetic dispersion pattern from hidden sulfide deposits. Inasmuch as chalcopyrite and native copper have been reported in the vicinity of Jabal Haraz in the Manakhah area, the rocks of the Yemen Volcanics in this region should be explored for base-metal sulfide deposits. \r\n\r\nThe first results of paleontologic examinations of fossils collected during 1975 and 1976 are presented, as are a list of Landsat images covering the Yemen Arab Republic, and a selected bibliography of reports on geology and the allied sciences relating to the Yemen Arab Republic.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77733","usgsCitation":"Grolier, M.J., Domenico, J.A., Donato, M., Tibbitts, G.C., Overstreet, W., and Ibrahim, M.M., 1977, Data from geologic investigations in the Yemen Arab Republic during 1976: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-733, 103 p. :ill., maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77733.","productDescription":"103 p. :ill., maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140803,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0733/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36647,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0733/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36648,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0733/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36649,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0733/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c8cb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grolier, Maurice J.","contributorId":98292,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grolier","given":"Maurice","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158760,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Domenico, J. Based on 1:100,000 scale maps from high-altitude photography, basin land cover was extracted at the generalized Level I and the more detailed Level II classification categories. Level I land-use data summaries were prepared for 46 of the basins using the 1:250,000 scale maps derived from Landsat imagery. Land cover in the basins ranged from 93.9 percent urban at Little Falls Branch near Bethesda, Maryland, to 96.2 percent agricultural at Morgan Creek near Kennedyville, Maryland. Applying multiple regression techniques to a network of gaging stations monitoring runoff from 39 of the basins, it was demonstrated that land-use data from high-altitude photography provides an effective means of significantly improving estimates of streamflow. Forty streamflow-characteristics equations incorporating remotely sensed land-use information, were compared with a control set of equations using map derived land cover. Analysis of 0.45-2.5 ?m field and laboratory spectra shows that iron-deficient opalites in the Cuprite mining district, Nevada, have an intense OH-absorption band near 2.2 ?m owing to their clay mineral and alunite contents and that this spectral feature is absent or weak in adjacent unaltered tuff and basalt. To evaluate the usefulness of this spectral feature for discriminating between altered and unaltered rocks, we generated color-ratio composite images from multispectral (0.46-2.36 ?m) aircraft data. The altered rocks in the district can be discriminated from unaltered rocks with few ambiguities; in addition, some effects of mineralogical zoning can be discriminated within the altered area. Only variations in amounts of limonite can be discerned in shorter wavelength aircraft data, Landsat MSS bands, and color aerial photographs.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77585","usgsCitation":"Abrams, M.J., Ashley, R.P., Rowan, L.C., Goetz, A.F., and Kahle, A., 1977, Use of imaging in the 0.46-2.36 [micrometers] spectral region for alteration mapping in the Cuprite mining district, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-585, ii, 19 leaves :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77585.","productDescription":"ii, 19 leaves :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139947,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0585/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35093,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0585/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db69881a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Abrams, Michael J.","contributorId":15192,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abrams","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ashley, R. The 1972 data were divided by the 1974 data, and low ratios indicate areas where land use and land cover had changed. These low ratios were classified into a land-use-change theme. A classification based on the use of the four bands of the multispectral scanner data, taken in 1974, yielded six land use categories: (1) Commercial-industrial-multifamily, (2) single-family residential, (3) cleared land, (4) open space, (5) forested land, and (6) water. Through the middle of 1977, the Center has supplied approximately 1.7 million copies of images from the more than 5 million images of the Earth's surface archived at the Center. Landsat accounted for half of these images plus approximately 5,800 computer-compatible tapes of Landsat data were also supplied to users. New methods for processing data products to make them more useful are being developed, and new accession aids for determining data availability are being placed in operation. The Center also provides assistance and training to resource specialists and land managers in the use of Landsat and other remotely sensed data. A Data Analysis Laboratory is operated at the Center to provide both digital and analog multispectral/multitemporal image analysis capabilities in support of the training and assistance programs. In addition to conventionally processed data products, radiometrically enhanced Landsat imagery are now available from the Center in limited quantities. In mid-1978, the Center will convert to an all-digital processing system for Landsat data that will provide improved products for user analysis in production quantities. The Department of Interior and NASA are currently studying concepts that use communication satellites to relay Landsat data between U.S. ground stations, Goddard Space Flight Center and the EROS Data Center which would improve the timeliness of data availability. The Data Center also works closely with the remote sensing programs and Landsat data receiving and processing facilities being developed in foreign countries.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"OCEANS '77 Conference Record","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"IEEE","doi":"10.1109/OCEANS.1977.1154431","usgsCitation":"Pohl, R.A., and Metz, G., 1977, Landsat data availability from the EROS Data Center and status of future plans, in OCEANS '77 Conference Record, p. 88-91, https://doi.org/10.1109/OCEANS.1977.1154431.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"88","endPage":"91","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288550,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288549,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1109/OCEANS.1977.1154431"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"539acc06e4b0e83db6d08f83","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pohl, Russell A.","contributorId":39698,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pohl","given":"Russell","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494690,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Metz, G.G.","contributorId":12731,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Metz","given":"G.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494689,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In this zone occur the only known economic or near-economic deposits of gold, tin, and copper. Such deposits are typically localized by small east-west structural elements. Non-economic copper occurrences elsewhere in the region appear to be related to major northeast- and northwest-trending lineaments mapped on Landsat images. Mineral exploration should be primarily directed at the main east-west lineament, but two other possible east-west zones might be worthwhile targets also. The major east-west lineament projects through a break in the continental shelf, across the Atlantic along a large transoceanic fracture zone and into the African continent along a mapped tectonic trend that goes through an area that produces copper, gold, and tin. Global geophysical data suggest that the mapped east-west trend in South America is a surface reflection of structures that developed in the tectosphere in Precambrian time and that have persisted until the present. © 1977 Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","doi":"10.1190/1.1440720","issn":"00168033","usgsCitation":"Offield, T., Abbott, E., Gillespie, A.R., and Loguercio, S., 1977, Structure mapping on enhanced landsat images of Southern Brazil: Tectonic control of mineralization and speculations on metallogeny: Geophysics, v. 42, no. 3, p. 482-500, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1440720.","productDescription":"19 p. The most important mineralogical differences are the increased abundance of goethite, hematite, and jarosite, and the presence of alunite, montmorillonite, and kaolinite in the altered rocks. Analysis of reflectance spectra recorded in the field showed that the altered rock spectra are characterized by broad absorption bands in the 0.45-0.50 mu m and 0.85-0.95 mu m regions which are due to electronic processes in the iron ions, and a band near 2.2 mu m which is due to vibrational processes in the OH ions. These features are absent or weak in most of the unaltered rock spectra. Therefore, the shapes of the 0.45-2.4 mu m spectra for these altered and unaltered rocks are conspicuously different. However, because of the wavelength positions and widths of the Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) bands, these spectral differences are not apparent in individual or color-infrared composite MSS images.The technique developed to enhance these subtle spectral differences combines rationing of the MSS bands and contrast stretching. The stretched ratio values are used to produce black-and-white images which depict materials according to spectral reflectance; ratioing minimizes the influence of topography and overall albedo on the grouping of spectrally similar materials. Color compositing of two or more stretched ratio images to form color-ratio composites provides additional enhancement. The most effective color-ratio composite for discriminating between the altered and unaltered areas, as well as among many of the unaltered rocks in south-central Nevada, was prepared using the following diazo color and stretched ratio image combinations: blue for MSS 4/5, yellow for MSS 5/6, and magenta for MSS 6/7. Altered areas appear green and brown in this combination.Field evaluation of this color-ratio composite shows that excluding alluvial areas, approximately 80 percent of the green and brown color patterns are related to hydrothermal alteration. The remaining 20 percent consists mainly of pink hematitic crystallized tuff, a result of vapor-phase crystallization, and of tan and red ferruginous shale and siltstone. Discrimination of this unaltered tuff from the altered rocks may be possible in the 2.2 mu m region because this absorption band is absent in the tuff spectra. However, because the shale and siltstone are mineralogically and spectrally similar to the altered rocks, there appears to be little prospect of distinguishing these rocks from altered rocks in visible and near-infrared multispectral images.
","language":"English","publisher":"GeoScienceWorld","doi":"10.1190/1.1440723","usgsCitation":"Rowan, L.C., Goetz, A.F., and Ashley, R.P., 1977, Discrimination of hydrothermal altered and unaltered rocks in visible and near infrared multispectral images: Geophysics, v. 42, no. 3, p. 522-535, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1440723.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"522","endPage":"535","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":374260,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"South Central Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.89404296875,\n 38.25543637637947\n ],\n [\n -117.35595703124999,\n 37.10776507118514\n ],\n [\n -117.39990234375,\n 38.46219172306828\n ],\n [\n -118.89404296875,\n 38.51378825951165\n ],\n [\n -118.89404296875,\n 38.25543637637947\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"42","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rowan, L. The known porphyry copper deposit at Saindak was used as a control area. Empirical maximum and minimum apparent reflectance limits were selected for each multispectral scanner band in each rock type classified, and a relatively unrefined classification table was prepared. Where the values for all four bands fitted within the limits designated for a particular class, a symbol for the presumed rock type was printed by the computer at the appropriate location; these symbols formed a classification map. Drainage channels, areas of mineralized quartz diorite, areas of pyrite-rich rock, and the approximate limit of propylitic alteration were very well delineated on the computer-generated map of the test area. The classification method was then used to evaluate 2,100 km2 in the Mashki Chah region, east of the test area, and a partial check of the results was made in the field. The results of the experiment show that outcrops of hydrothermally altered and mineralized rock can be identified from Landsat-1 data under favorable conditions. The empirical method of digital computer classification of the multispectral scanner data was relatively unrefined and rapid. The five mineralized prospecting sites identified are in locations that I would not have selected as favorable on the basis of geologic knowledge or photogeologic interpretation at the time of the investigation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Schmidt, R.G., 1976, Exploration for porphyry copper deposits in Pakistan using digital processing of Landsat-1 data: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 1, p. 27-34.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"27","endPage":"34","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266418,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue1/report.pdf","text":"report","size":"16.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":266419,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Pakistan","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 60.87,23.54 ], [ 60.87,37.06 ], [ 77.82,37.06 ], [ 77.82,23.54 ], [ 60.87,23.54 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"4","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51026611e4b0d4f5ea817bd9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schmidt, Robert G.","contributorId":19243,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The DCP's transmitted 3260 messages comprising 26,080 ambient, surface, and near-surface temperature records at an accuracy of ±1.15 °C for 1121 instrument days between November 14, 1972 and April 17, 1974. In harsh, windy, high-altitude volcanic environments the DCP functioned best with a small dipole antenna. Sixteen kg of alkaline batteries provided a viable power supply for the DCP systems, operated at a low-duty cycle, for 5 to 8 months. A proposed solar power supply system would lengthen the period of unattended operation of the system considerably. Special methods of data handling such as data storage via a proposed memory system would increase the significance of the twice-daily data reception enabling the DCP's to record full diurnal-temperature cycles at volcanic or geothermal sites. Refinements in the temperature-monitoring system designed and operated in experiment SR 251 included a backup system consisting of a multipoint temperature scanner, a servo mechanism and an analog-to-digital recorder. Improvements were made in temperature-probe design and in construction of corrosion-resistant seals by use of a hydrofluoric-acid-etching technique.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Thermal surveillance of active volcanoes using the Landsat-1 Data Collection System","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":6,"text":"USGS Unnumbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70043109","usgsCitation":"Preble, D.M., Friedman, J.D., and Frank, D., 1976, Electronic thermal sensor and Data Collection Platform technology: Part 5 in Thermal surveillance of active volcanoes using the Landsat-1 Data Collection System: Final Report, 64 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70043109.","productDescription":"64 p.","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266996,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5112382ce4b0ebe69d7eb6ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Preble, Duane M.","contributorId":36560,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Preble","given":"Duane","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Friedman, Jules D.","contributorId":79464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"Jules","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Frank, David","contributorId":13969,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frank","given":"David","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

False color, \"simulated natural color\" and color ratio techniques, were used successfully in conjunction with a black and white, single band photomosaic of Alaska. Computer techniques involved 2 stages of digital image processing: 1) atmospheric and sun elevation corrections, noise removal, computer mosaicking and change of the data format; and 2) image enhancement, involving data manipulation for maximum discrimination of surface materials and structure. Application of a new technique called a \"sinusoidal\" stretch gave information not available in other products having standard contrast stretches. We identified several orthogonal sets of linears and found parallel linears to be regularly spaced at approximately 30-35 km intervals. The locations of known mineral occurrences correlate well with the linears. Extensions of known faults and possible locations of hidden intrusive bodies were identified. Analysis of numerous areas of anomalous light reflectance showed that most are associated with known mineral occurrences, altered zones or geochemical anomalies, whereas some are not and may represent unexplored altered zones or mineralized areas worthy of future exploration.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7665","usgsCitation":"Albert, N., and
