The work of the various branches and divisions conformed to this plan, and a detailed statement of their operations may be found on later pages.
\nOn January 23 the former Director, Charles D. Walcott, was appointed to the position of Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and his resignation as Director was accepted by the President, becoming effective April 30, 1907. Mr. Walcott has been a member of the Survey since its organization, and the thirteen years of his service as the administrative head of the bureau cover the period of its greatest growth.
\nAt the beginning of his directorship Mr. Walcott disclaimed any desire to make radical changes in either the policy or the administration of the Survey as developed under his predecessors, King and Powell, but in his first report, the Director's sixteenth, he mentioned certain readjustments which he deemed desirable in order that the Survey might better meet the economic and educational needs of the country. It is noteworthy that, almost without exception, these improvements have been accomplished, and even more fully than as then outlined. Among these changes may be mentioned : The raising of the standard of the topographic maps, with the representation thereon of land subdivision lines, and the extension of exact leveling and primary triangulation; the placing of the entire topographic and geologic force within the classified service; the obtaining of authority from Congress to issue separates of the annual report in pamphlet form, thus permitting advance publication of chapters of the Mineral Resources report, as well as of papers on economic geology; the enlargement of the work of the divisions of hydrography, mineral resources, and geology, in the last case providing for reconnaissance surveys of regions of economic importance.
\nEqually notable was the growth of the Survey under Mr. Walcott's administration, as shown by the increase in both the extent and the scope of its operations. The appropriations for the last fiscal year amounted to more than four times the total of those made thirteen years ago, and there was, of course, a corresponding increase in the amount of field and office work performed. The development of the relations between the Geological Survey and the public within the same period is measured by a more than fourfold increase in amount of official correspondence, nearly fourfold increase in number of printed pages in the various reports of the year, and a more than fivefold increase in copies of maps printed, while the total annual distribution of publications, books, and maps grew from less than 200,000 to nearly a million copies, the sales increasing from $2,100 to over $18,000. The extent to which the results of the work by this organization are now utilized by both the industrial world and the educational and scientific institutions furnishes the best index of the degree of success attained by Mr. Walcott and his colleagues.

The mines are situated around the margins of in irregular batholith of quartz diorite, whose surface exposure is from half a mile to 1 1/2 miles broad and 2 1/2 miles long. This invasion of igneous rock, which as shown on later pages of this report was primarily the cause of the location of the mineral wealth in this district, is but 6 miles at its nearest point from the exposed surface of the far greater Boulder batholith, a granitic mass which is petrographically a quartz monzonite in normal composition. The Boulder batholith possesses a general rudely rectangular form, occupying about 60 miles in latitude by about 35 in longitude, and holds within its confines the mining city of Butte, from which for many years past has poured a flood of silver and a quarter of the world's copper. Other smaller mining centers also lie within this large granitic area, while such important ore deposits as those of Elkhorn and Unionville, south of Helena, have been found about its margin. Thus the Boulder batholith, with the outlying related areas at Marysville and at Granite, constitutes one of the more important centers of mining for the precious metals within the United States. · The necessity of studying such regions from the scientific point of view is evident, not only in order to develop the phases of immediate economic bearing, such as the limits of occurrence of the ore deposits, the degree of their continuity in depth, and other similar questions, but also because of the broader bearing which such studies must have on theoretical and applied geology in general.

It may be a mixture of a mercury-ammonium chloride in great preponderance, NHg2Cl.1/3H2O, with an oxychloride and sulphate or oxysulphate of mercury. Terlinguaite is a mercuric-mercurous oxychloride, HgO.HgCl, the formula of Moses being confirmed and the mixed nature ascertained by tests. Eglestonite is a mercurous oxychloride, Hg2O.2HgCl, the first authentic instance of such a compound, either artificial or native, and not Hg6Cl3O2, as believed by Moses. Lake and Jordan River, Utah","docAbstract":"The valleys of Utah Lake and Jordan River are situated in north-central Utah, in the extreme eastern part of the Great Basin. The lofty Wasatch Range (Pl. I), the westernmost of the Rocky Mountain system, limits the valleys on the east, and relatively low basin ranges - the Oquirrh, Lake, and East Tintic mountains - determine them on the west. The valleys trend north and south, and are almost separated by the low east-west Traverse Range, the slopes of which constitute a dam for Utah Lake, which drains through Jordan River to Great Salt Lake.
The area under consideration is the most populous and flourishing part of the State, Salt Lake City and Provo, the first and third cities in the State, and many other thriving settlements are there located. At Bingham Junction and Murray a number of smelters treat the ores from near-by mines, but agriculture is the main industry. Water for irrigation is supplied by mountain streams, and intensive farming is successfully pursued. The practice of irrigation was begun by the Mormon pioneers in 1847, and has been discussed in several publications; little attention, however, has been given to the underground water resources, and, so far as the writer is aware, they have not before been described. The present paper outlines conditions of occurrence of the subterranean waters and describes their development in the valleys of Utah Lake and Jordan River.
