All three subdivisions-Lower, Middle, and Upper Triassic--are represented by calcareous deposits, aggregating approximately 4,000 feet in thickness. Of this amount, about 800 feet belong to the Lower Triassic, about 1,000 feet to the Middle Triassic, and about 2,000 feet to the Upper Triassic.
\n
The entire section is not represented at any one locality, nor is the thickness of each division constant. Furthermore, the marine Triassic is not everywhere developed as a calcareous formation. In the United States the Triassic system is represented by marine deposits only in the Western States, in Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and California.
\n
The Lower Triassic is known only in Idaho and southeastern California, where about 800 feet of shales and limestones contain fossils characteristic of this series. The most important genera are Meekoceras, Danubites, Columbites, Flemingites, Aspidites, Lecanites, Ophiceras, Nannites, Ussuria, Pseudosageceras, Hedenstrmia, Cordillerites, Tirolites, and Proptychites, most of which are represented by closely related species in the Lower Triassic of India and Siberia.
\n
The Middle Triassic occurs chiefly in Nevada and southeastern California. In the Inyo Range, southeastern California, about 200 feet of shaly limestones contain the following genera characteristic of the lower horizon of the Middle Triassic: Arochordiceras, Xenodiscus, Hungarites, Ptychites, Tirolites, Ceratites, and Parapopanoceras.
\n
In central Nevada, in the West Humboldt Range, the higher beds of the Middle Triassic are represented by about 800 feet of shaly limestones, in which the most characteristic genera are Ceratites, Anolcites, Dinarites, Danubites, Celtites, Hungarites, Beyrichites, Arochordiceras, Balatonites, Eutomoceras, Ptychites, Joannites, Lecanites, and Atractites among the cephalopods, Daonella among pelecypods, and Cymbospondyl;us among vertebrates.
\n
The Upper Triassic is best represented in northern California, where the Hosselkus limestone and the shales below and above this formation contain characteristic fossils. The Hosselkus limestone and the interbedded shales have a thickness approximating 500 feet. Fossils are very abundant throughout this formation, although much better preserved near the base. The best known fauna belongs to the zone of Tropites subbullatus, and contains as its most important members the following genera: Tropites, Paratropites, Discotropites, Juvaites, Sagenites, Leconteia, Trachyceras, Clionites, Arpadites, Polycyclus, Metairolites, Hauerites, Dieneria, Arcestes, Paraganides, Proclydonautilus, Cosmonautilus, and Atractites among cephalopods, Halobia among pelecypods, and Shastasaurus among the vertebrates.
\n
Above the Hosselkus limestone lie the Pseudomonotis slates, of unknown thickness, characterized by Halorites, Rhabdoceras, Arcestes, and Pseudomonotis.
\n
In the West Humboldt Range in Nevada the Star Peak limestone, about 1,200 feet thick, appears to represent the Hosselkus limestone, although very few fossils have ever been found in it. Above the limestones lie the Pseudomonotis beds, about 800 feet of shales and shaly limestones, in which are found Pseudomonotis subcircularis, Rhabdoceras, Halorites, Placites, and Arcestes, an association characteristic of the Noric horizon.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp40","usgsCitation":"Hyatt, A., and Smith, J., 1905, The Triassic cephalopod genera of America: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 40, 394 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp40.","productDescription":"394 p.","numberOfPages":"399","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":67109,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0040/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":120435,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0040/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db6735da","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hyatt, Alpheus","contributorId":60682,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hyatt","given":"Alpheus","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":221531,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, J.P.","contributorId":54276,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":221530,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The fluorspar, lead, and zinc deposits that were the subject of the investigations reported in this paper are situated hi Livings ton, Crittenden, and Caldwell, and adjacent portions of Christian, Trigg, and Lyon counties, in western Kentucky, and in the counties immediately across the Ohio River, in the extreme southern portion of Illinois. This area, constituting what may be aptly termed the Kentucky-Illinois fluorite district, contains also lead, zinc, and other minerals in subordinate quantities and values. It is usually considered a minor division of the lead and zinc districts of the Mississippi Valley, but is in some ways rather sharply distinguished from the other districts of the valley. It differs from the other districts chiefly in the following respects: (1) In the presence of basic igneous dikes; (2) in the abundance of fluorite and its almost constant association with the lead and zinc ores; and (3) in the mode of occurrence of the ores, which are found principally in true fissure .veins that have resulted from fracturing and subsequent faulting. In the other districts the lead and zinc are of primary importance, while in this region the igneous dikes and the fluorite are the primary or predominant features and the lead and zinc are only incidental.
","language":"English","publisher":"Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp36","usgsCitation":"Ulrich, E.O., and Smith, W., 1905, The lead, zinc, and fluorspar deposits of western Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 36, 218 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp36.","productDescription":"218 p.","numberOfPages":"248","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":67106,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":120433,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0036/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kentucky","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.9140625,\n 37.35269280367274\n ],\n [\n -82.3974609375,\n 37.97884504049713\n ],\n [\n -82.85888671875,\n 38.47939467327645\n ],\n [\n -84.0234375,\n 38.92522904714054\n ],\n [\n -84.66064453125,\n 39.04478604850143\n ],\n [\n -85.80322265625,\n 38.34165619279593\n ],\n [\n -87.64892578125,\n 37.92686760148135\n ],\n [\n -88.2861328125,\n 37.75334401310656\n ],\n [\n -88.48388671874999,\n 37.50972584293751\n ],\n [\n -88.330078125,\n 36.914764288955936\n ],\n [\n -88.04443359375,\n 36.756490329505155\n ],\n [\n -84.92431640625,\n 36.65079252503471\n ],\n [\n -81.5625,\n 36.50963615733049\n ],\n [\n -81.5625,\n 37.16031654673677\n ],\n [\n -81.9140625,\n 37.35269280367274\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64b045","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ulrich, E. To the adequate description of geologic formations and structure cartography is essential, and Congress early recognized this fact by making appropriations for the preparation of a geologic map of the United States. The topographic base map, in order to show with sufficient precision the relations of the geologic formations and the intricacies of the structure, must have a rather large scale and present considerable detail. No such map of this country existed in 1879, and its preparation was immediately begun. The waters of the country are of vast importance, and in a broad sense may be regarded as one of its greatest mineral resources. Hence, in the evolution of the work of the Survey, and especially in view of the great importance of the subject to the irrigation interests, Congress early began making appropriations for ascertaining the amount and quality of the surface and underground waters and when, in 1902, the service for the reclamation of arid lands was organized, that work naturally was placed in the hands of the Secretary of the Interior and by him intrusted to the Director of the Survey.

The three great branches of work carried on by the Geological Survey are, therefore, the geologic, the topographic, and the hydrographic, and with these, more especially the latter, is conjoined the Reclamation Service ; publication and administration constitute necessary auxiliary branches. Along these great lines the work of the Survey has progressed without essential variation for many years. The changes made have been due to normal expansion rather than to radical departure in object or plan.

State cooperation

During the last fiscal year, State cooperation, as explained in previous reports, continued. Arrangements for cooperation in geologic work were made with five States, the total amount contributed by them being about \\$8,000, and arrangements for cooperative topographic surveys were made with eleven States, the amount available for such surveys being thus increased by more than \\$100,000.

Reclamation service

The work of the Reclamation Service during the last fiscal year was advanced as rapidly as was thought consistent with thoroughness and accuracy. Actual construction is now in progress on eight projects, as follows : Salt River, Arizona; Truckee-Carson, Nevada; Hondo, New Mexico ; Uncompahgre Valley, Colorado; Minidoka, Idaho; Belle Fourche, South Dakota ; North Platte, Wyoming and Nebraska ; and Shoshone, Wyoming. Proposals were received for work on the Laguna dam, Yuma project, California and Arizona; Huntley project, Montana, and the Fort Buford project, North Dakota and Montana. In several other States operations are at a point where advertisements for bids only await the removal of certain legal obstacles, the settlement of international difficulties, or the termination of delays on the part of local organizations or individuals.

The organization of the body of men constituting the personnel of the Reclamation Service, whose field of operations covers so large a territory, though necessarily difficult, has been satisfactorily accomplished, and precedents have been established along approved lines. The general allotment of funds has been made with a view to the greatest benefit to the greatest number, and from the broad standpoint of the welfare of the country as a whole.

One of the important features in the evolution of the irrigation work is the development of power, which the numerous dams and, drops in canals make possible. Plans were made to transmit the power being developed in many sections of the arid regions, by means of electricity, to points more or less distant, there to be used for raising underground waters, pumping waters lying above the line of gravity canals, or for various other purposes, and attention was also given to the character of the soils and of the water to be used upon them, the materials used in the construction of the works, and numerous other details incident to reclamation by irrigation.

Coal-testing plant

Under two special appropriations of \\$30,000 each, carried by the urgent deficiency bill approved February 18, 1904, and the general deficiency bill approved April 27, 1904, the Director of the Geological Survey was authorized to construct and operate at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition a plant for testing the coals and lignites of the United States, in order to determine their fuel values and the most economic method of their utilization for different purposes, it being provided that all testing machinery and all coals and lignites to be tested 'should be contributed free of charge to the Government. For carrying out the provisions of these acts the Director appointed a committee, consisting of Edward W. Parker, Joseph A. Holmes, and Marius R. Campbell, to direct the construction and operation of the plant. This committee received the heartiest cooperation from the manufacturers of such equipment as was needed for the installation of the plant, from the railroad companies in freight concessions and transportation for the experts and their assistants, and from the coal operators in the furnishing of coal in carload lots for testing purposes. Although the utmost expedition was used in the construction of the plant, it was not until the first of September that the testing work actually began. Between the first of September and the close of the exposition 65 carload samples of coal for testing purposes were received, and the results of the investigation were published in a preliminary report issued as Geological Survey Bulletin No. 261. The coals tested were received from 17 States and Territories, and much valuable information regarding the best uses to which the different coals may be put was obtained.

One of the most important facts developed during this investigation is the possibility of utilizing the vast lignite resources of the West in the manufacture of producer gas, it having been shown that a higher grade of this gas can be obtained from lignite than from ordinary bituminous and anthracite coal. The investigation also showed that the slack or fine coal produced at the dry, noncoking bituminous coal mines of the middle West, large quantities of which are now being wasted, can be profitably utilized by briquetting.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/ar26","usgsCitation":"Walcott, C.D., 1905, Twenty-Sixth Annual Report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey, 1904-1905: U.S. Geological Survey Annual Report 26, 322 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ar26.","productDescription":"322 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":181243,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":337216,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ar/26/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db623c6d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Walcott, Charles D.","contributorId":7738,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walcott","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":258493,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Much time having been occupied in organization and preliminary correspondence, the results of only about three months' actual work are included. The report is issued for the purpose of giving to present or prospective well owners and drillers the results of drilling as reported to the Survey, with the object of furnishing them as good a basis as possible for future drilling in the regions discussed, and to afford geologists and others a more complete knowledge of the rock succession and structure.

It is intended that the reports of the series shall present records of contemporaneous drilling rather than the results of past work, a special attempt being made to secure records accompanied by samples. The logs of completed wells, however, will be incorporated when practicable; but as records of such wells are seldom preserved for any length of time, their number will probably decrease in proportion to new wells as the work continues.

All well records received during the year 1904 that were accompanied by complete sets of samples are presented in this report, as are also a considerable number furnished by drillers, contractors, well owners, etc., representing other completed wells. The report does not, however, include all records furnished the Survey, a great number being furnished by oil companies and others interested in the development of oil or mineral lands. The present publication includes all of the wells listed in these two papers, together with many additional borings, mostly of recent date. Messrs. M. L. Fuller and A. C. Veatch, of the eastern section of hydrology, and other geologists of the Survey have contributed many new data. Descriptions of borings published in reports issued since 1901 have been incorporated as far as practicable. All the entries are by counties. The wells and borings reported in the paper are all more than 400 feet in depth. The information concerning them has been obtained partly from replies to circular letters sent to all parts of the United States and partly from geological reports and other published sources. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining replies to the circulars, to lack of knowledge on the part of correspondents, and to the incompleteness of published records, doubtless there are borings which have not been reported. In regions of oil and gas wells, where borings are numerous, the individual wells can not be listed here, but representative wells are given. References to logs or records of the wells or extended descriptions of them are given in footnotes, and after the list of wells in each State there is added a list of the principal publications relating to deep borings in that State.

The bearing of the information given in the columns of the lists probably is apparent unless, perhaps, in the one headed \"Height to which the water rises.\" In this column an entry such as \"-45\" indicates that the water rises to within 45 feet of the surface; \"+45\" indicates that it is a flowing well and has sufficient head to raise the water 45 feet above the surface in an open pipe 45 feet or more in height. The yield in gallons per minute usually is estimated. Depths and diameters often have been reported from memory and different sources of publication sometimes give different figures. Most wells which are not stated to be \"for oil,\" \"for gas,\" \"brine,\" \"abandoned,\" etc., in the remarks column, or \"not any\" in the yield column, generally afford more or less water. Many of the gas and oil wells, active or abandoned, yield salt water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp149","usgsCitation":"Darton, N.H., 1905, Preliminary list of deep borings in the United States (2d ed. with additions.): U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 149, 175 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp149.","productDescription":"175 p.","numberOfPages":"180","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26178,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0149/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137257,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0149/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","edition":"2d ed. with additions.","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d96f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Darton, Nelson Horatio","contributorId":78307,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Darton","given":"Nelson","email":"","middleInitial":"Horatio","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143436,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
