In the central part of the Wady Arabah on the west flank of the promontory known as Samrat el Fedan, a terrace, or perhaps more properly a gravel bar, has been observed by Hull at an elevation of about 1300 feet above the Dead Sea. This is apparently a definite record of the surface level of the Dead Sea during a former period. On the sides of the Jordan valley the terraces range in height from a few feet to 750 feet above the river. The measurements reported show great variation due principally to an inclination of the surfaces of the terraces, towards the centre of the valley, but indicating also that they are not horizontal in the direction of drainage.
","language":"English","publisher":"Cambridge University Press","doi":"10.1017/S0016756800182445","usgsCitation":"Russell, I., 1888, II.-The Jordan-Arabah Depression and the Dead Sea: Geological Magazine, v. 5, no. 9, p. 387-395, https://doi.org/10.1017/S0016756800182445.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"387","endPage":"395","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":371565,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Dead Sea, Jordan Rift Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              35.52978515624999,\n              32.72490926707168\n            ],\n            [\n              35.2606201171875,\n              31.21045241900757\n            ],\n            [\n              35.233154296875,\n              30.93050081760779\n            ],\n            [\n              34.9639892578125,\n              30.211608223816906\n            ],\n            [\n              34.892578125,\n              29.528060295064265\n            ],\n            [\n              35.04913330078125,\n              29.513720234908057\n            ],\n            [\n              35.5078125,\n              31.017632855634172\n            ],\n            [\n              35.65063476562499,\n              31.606609719226917\n            ],\n            [\n              35.63690185546875,\n              32.7295304134847\n            ],\n            [\n              35.52978515624999,\n              32.72490926707168\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"5","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Russell, Israel C.","contributorId":79865,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Russell","given":"Israel C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":780348,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The general results of this survey were communicated to the Director of the United States Geological Survey and an abstract of my communication was published in Science, Vol. II, pp. 836, 837, December 28, 1883. The present paper is a detailed report of the study of the materials of this Genesee section.

Since the field work was done several additional sections have been examined: in 1884, sections through Western New York (and adjoining Pennsylvania) from Chautauqua County westward and into Ohio as far as the meridian of Cleveland; and in 1885 the region between the Cayuga section and those of Delaware and Otsego Counties, as far as Oneonta, were examined. The materials are under investigation and will be reported upon as soon as their study is completed.

The sections are made along meridians, in order to make them more readily and simply comparable. Each long meridional section runs through the same stratigraphical series of deposits and is made up of a series of small local sections, such as the individual outcrop of the rocks renders possible.

It is not supposed that in any case these sections are exhaustive, but it is intended that so far as they go the relative position of the faunas in the sections shall be precise and the association of species in each horizon shall be given as it is, so that the faunas can be identified, and thus, while they will leave much to be added, these studies, it is hoped, will give an outline of the geographical distribution and geological range of faunas and their species which will make a comparative study of the faunas possible.

Respectfully yours,
HENRY S. This possibility has heretofore been largely ignored, owing doubtless to the extensive obliteration of those characteristics which are generally regarded as most typical of eruptive rocks. Schistose or banded structure, however, can now hardly be considered as necessarily an indication of sedimentary origin. The minerals which are most characteristic of the so-called crystalline schists have been repeatedly shown to be derived from the alteration of igneous as well as of aqueous formations. These minerals only represent the final and most stable combination of certain elements under certain conditions, and are quite independent of the earlier combinations in which these elements may have existed. A lava bed and a clay bank, if the two may be supposed to have originally had the same chemical composition, might, under the influence of the same metamorphic agencies, ultimately give rise to the same rock in spite of original differences in structure or mineralogical composition. Stratification may be obliterated by metamorphism, while foliation, or even a banded structure, may, by the same means, be secondarily induced. Neither structure nor mineral composition can be taken as an infallible guide in determining the origin or the age of rocks.

The present paper is intended as a contribution to our knowledge of a particular phase of metamorphism in eruptive rocks, i. e., that one which is dependent on the secondary development of hornblende by the paramorphism or pseudomorphism of pyroxene. This is a change the frequency of which renders it of fundamental geological importance. It has already received considerable attention from many eminent geologists, but no locality heretofore studied seems to have afforded opportunities for tracing out every stage in the process of alteration superior to those offered by the area of massive rocks west and northwest of the city of Baltimore. Here, covering a district of over fifty square miles, the unchanged pyroxene rock and its resultant hornblendic equivalent occur in the most intimate relations. Exposures of both rocks in situ are numerous, and the opportunity of following out the gradual transition of one into the other is proportionately great.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/b28","usgsCitation":"Williams, G.H., 1886, The gabbros and associated hornblende rocks occurring in the neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 28, 78 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/b28.","productDescription":"78 p.
