Geochemical reconnaissance for rare metals in plutons of albite-muscovite granite and quartz monzonite in the vicinity of Jabal Lababa disclosed positive geochemical anomalies for beryllium, tantalum, thorium, lanthanum, niobium, tin, yttrium, and zirconium. The low anomalous values for the rare metals in rocks and the short mechanical dispersion trains, seldom exceeding 4 km in length, of rare-metal-bearing heavy minerals, are interpreted to indicate that primary deposits of these metals are lacking, and any placers would be small and low in tenor.
\nSmall positive anomalies for barium were detected at scattered localities in the metasediments adjacent to the plutons in the Jabal Lababa area. Positive anomalies for the precious metals are lacking, and the low values observed for base metals do not indicate the presence of sulfide deposits. The abundant quartz lag gravel in the eastern part of the area is unmineralized. Small books of muscovite are present in some pegmatite, but is of non-commercial volume and quality.
\nA subcircular structure at the coast of the Red Sea near the mouth of Wadi Nahb should be tested to determine if it is a buried salt dome.
\nThree nonmagnetic high-density concentrates containing 1,000 to 15,000 ppm lead were found on the granitic pluton near Ar Rayth. The source of the lead is not galena, and high values for lead appear to be characteristic of the pluton but do not indicate an ore deposit.

Drill cuttings and water samples were collected, and water-level measurements and lithologic and geophysical logs were made. Deposits to a depth of 575 feet consist of sand, clayey sand, phosphatic sandy clay, coquina, sandy limestone, and dolostone. Below 575 feet, the deposits consist of fragmented and granular limestone, dolomitic limestone, and massive to finely crystalline dolostone, which comprise the Floridan aquifer system in the area. Water levels were measured near or at the bottom of the drill hole through the drill stem and in the annular space between the drilled hole and drill stem at the well head as drilling progressed from 770 to 2,112 feet in depth. Water levels measured through the drill stem ranged from 1.17 feet above land surface at a depth of 2,107 feet to 15.0 feet above land surface at a depth of 1,574 feet. Water levels measured in the annular space ranged from 7.5 feet above land surface at a depth of 770 feet to 14.9 feet at various depths from 1,574 to 1,721 feet. Chloride concentrations of water sampled through the drill stem from a depth of 711 to 1 ,616 feet ranged from 22 to 150 milligrams per liter at 1,648 feet. Chloride concentrations then ranged from 345 to about 800 milligrams per liter to a depth of 2,071 feet and then increased to a maximum of 5,450 milligrams per liter at 2,107 feet. This report is the third in a series covering a lake-sampling program that began in 1975. Data include water-column profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance. Chemical, physical, and biological properties were measured at specific points in the water column, and selected physical and chemical properties also were measured in the principal inflows.\r\n\r\nThe lakes were predominatly hard (120 180 milligrams per liter) to very hard water, although several soft-water lakes were found in southeastern Ohio. Calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfate were the principal dissolved constituents. Specific conductance ranged from 103 micromhos per centimeter (at 25 degrees Celsius) at Tycoon Lake, 1978, to 2,550 micromhos per centimeter at West Fork Mill Creek Lake, 1978. Thirteen lakes had trace-element concentrations that were above the limits for exceptional warm-water habitat recammended by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.\r\n\r\nSeasonal thermal gradients developed in most lakes deeper than 17 feet. Oxygen concentrations were zero or near zero during the summer sampling of the bottom water of all lakes having definite thermal gradients. Most anaerobic zones contained hydrogen sulfide and high concentrations of ammonia.\r\n\r\nAll lakes were evaluated and classified by Carlson's trophic state index. Most of the lakes were classified as eutrophic. Blue-green algae (CyanophytaJ) dominated the summer algal communities. This was done to determine the plausible minerals and clay types in the aquifers that may be reacting with groundwater and affecting the water quality. The purpose of this report is only to present the whole rock x-ray and clay-fraction mineralogy data. Nineteen surface samples or samples from outcrop of Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial basin deposits in the central and southern Rio Grande rift were collected and analyzed. The analysis of the samples consisted of grain size analysis, and clay-size fraction mineralogy and semiquantitative analysis of the relative abundance of different clay mineral groups present. Depth to water was measured for 22 wells and discharges were measured for 53 springs. Chemical analyses for water samples collected from 23 wells and 25 springs indicated larger dissolved solids concentrations in bedrock water samples than in alluvial water samples. Drillers ' records obtained from the Colorado State Engineer 's Office for 86 wells indicate generally larger yields from wells completed in alluvium than in bedrock. Management also concerns the protection of the supply of water from deterioration through contamination. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Nebraska began providing data to allow for better management of the State 's water near the end of the 19th Century. Since then the USGS activities have continued and have included the monitoring of hydrologic conditions, detailed studies to describe the hydrology of specific areas, and studies to add to the basic scientific knowledge of hydrology. Projects in all these areas continue. The work has been supported through Federal funding, through support from other Federal agencies, and through cooperative programs with many State and local agencies. This report summarizes these activities which are ongoing in the State of Nebraska. The project has been divided into three phases; this report presents the results of the first phase that characterizes current water quality data collection activities in Colorado and Ohio, including costs of sample analysis, and identifies those data potentially applicable and readily available for addressing selected water quality questions of regional and national scope. An estimated $63 million was spent during 1984 in the two States for only the laboratory analysis of water quality samples. For many agencies, total program costs are believed to be more than twice the laboratory costs. About four times more samples were reported for Ohio than for Colorado. Water quality data collection programs were tested against a set of five screening criteria. In Colorado, 34 percent of all samples met all five criteria; whereas, in Ohio, 5 percent of all samples met all five criteria. In Colorado, analyses from 114,300 samples (34 percent of the total), and in Ohio, analyses from 57,000 samples (5 percent of the total) potentially are applicable and readily available for addressing water quality questions of regional and national scope. These samples represent about $8 million in estimated laboratory costs. These data have been stored in many data bases and locations. A collective urban-stormwater data base has now been assembled on magnetic tape and contains data from the U.S. Geological Survey 's urban-stormwater program, that includes data from the Nationwide Urban Runoff Program. Stations having simultaneous rainfall, runoff, and water-quality data were selected for the data base. Rigorous quality-assurance procedures were followed to ensure that the data were of good quality. The resultant data base contains information for 723 storms from 99 stations in 22 metropolitan areas throughout the United States. Data for five or more storms are available for about two-thirds of the stations. This data base is available to the public in standardized format on magnetic tape. This publication explains the content and format of the tape. It includes water-quality data, discharge measurements, water levels, and drillers* logs. The East Shore area (plate 1) includes about 430 square miles, bounded by the Wasatch Range on the east and the Great Salt Lake on the west. The first section line north of the town of Willard is the northern boundary, whereas the Davis-Salt Lake County line is the southern boundary.
Most of the data in this report were collected from 1983 to 1985 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights. Some of the data were previously published by Smith (1961) or Bolke and Waddell (1972).
The purpose of this report is to provide ground-water data for use by officials managing water resources and the general public and to supplement an interpretive report for the area that will be published later. From tables 1- 5 of this report, determinations can be made for the depth to water-bearing units, water levels in wells, well yields, or chemical quality of ground water at the sites shown on plate 1.
