These lineaments occur as alinements of surface geologic structures, linear valleys or ridges, and linear changes in tonal contrast marking differences in soil type, soil moisture, or vegetation. The lineaments are believed to represent the surface traces of zones of weakness deep within the earth's crust along which vertical or horizontal adjustments to earth stresses persistently recurred since at least Precambrian time.</p><p>A consistent pattern in the lineaments can be discerned in Alaska (fig. 1D), and throughout the North American Cordillera (fig. 2). This pattern is believed to represent a mosaic of crustal blocks, whose differential movements have guided the tectonic development of the Cordillera.</p><p>Areas in which mineral deposits are known to be concentrated are alined along many of the lineaments or occur at lineament intersections, suggesting that the zones of weakness reflected by the lineaments provided felicitous pathways for upward movement of mineralizing agents. Other lineaments bound areas of high mineral concentration suggesting that some crustal blocks have had a tectonic history more favorable for mineralization than others. These conclusions suggest that the study of space image lineaments can provide new and fruitful approaches to the search for concealed mineral deposits.</p><p>In Alaska, some lineaments coincide in part with active fault traces and some separate areas of significantly different structure and geologic history. However, the movements along the zones of weakness which these lineaments are believed to reflect have been too slow and spread over too many millions of years for the lineaments to be considered as marking zones of present earthquake hazard.</p><p>Detailed discussion of the lineaments, and of interpretations as to their meaning, are contained in: 1) a paper presented by Lathram and Raynolds at the First William T. It was believed that data recorded by the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (Landsat-1) could be processed to yield the needed land-cover information. This study demonstrates that digital computer processing of the spectral information contained in each picture element (pixel) of 1.1 acres (4,500 m2) can produce maps and tables of the areal extent of selected land-cover categories.</p><p>The distribution of water, rock, agricultural areas, evergreens, bare earth, hardwoods, and uncategorized areas, is portrayed on a map of the entire New River basin (1:62,500 scale) and on 15 quadrangles (1:24,000 scale). Although some categories are a mixture of land-cover types, they portray the predominant component named. Landsat color composite images, at 1:250,000 scale and acquired on two dates during the 1975 growing season, were interpreted. Irrigated lands were delineated manually, and the irrigated area was estimated, based on dot-grid sampling of the manually delineated lands. The image interpretation estimate of irrigated area was then adjusted by a comparison of interpretation results with ground data on 45 sample plots, each 1 mi<sup>2</sup> (2.6 km<sup>2</sup>) in size.</p><p>Two interpreters independently estimated the irrigated area. &nbsp;Their adjusted estimates were 285,000 acres (115,000 ha) and 267,000 acres (108,000 ha) respectively, with corresponding 95 percent confidence intervals of ±19,500 acres (7,880 ha) and ±34,700 acres (14,000 ha). Large well yields of 25 gal/min or more can be obtained in the study area by locating future wells on SKYLAB lineaments rather than on lineaments detected on either high-altitude aerial photographs, LANDSAT images, or by random drilling. Larger savings might be achieved by locating wells on lineaments detected by both stereo viewing and projection. The test site is underlain by dense, fractured, flat-lying limestones. Soil cover averages 4 ft thick in the Central Basin and about 40 ft thick on the Eastern Highland rim. Groundwater occurs mostly in horizontal, sheetlike solution cavities, and the trends of these cavities are controlled by joints. Used with timely&nbsp;and accurate ground data, the system made possible a determination of&nbsp;the variability in crop spectral appearance, from soil type to soil&nbsp;type, as recorded on Landsat data. Information was provided in the&nbsp;form of spectral distribution histrograms for each crop-soil class on&nbsp;each Landsat band. Several crop categories in a test area in &nbsp;rookings&nbsp;County, South Dakota, were classified using training fields that were&nbsp;selected to be representative of each major crop-soil class. For the three divergent rangeland test areas, centered on Broken W, Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie, detailed interpretation of the imagery only partially satisfied the information requirements set. It was most useful in the Broken Hill area where fenceline contrasts in range condition were readily visible. At this and the other sites an overstorey of trees made interpretation difficult. Heat flux in this range characterizes the postvolcanic environment on Surtsey in which the subaerial palagonitization of basaltic tephra is associated with mass transfer of hydrothermal vapor, either of meteoric or sea-water origin, only a few years after cessation of eruptive activity. The flux estimation is the result of the Surtsey data-relay experiment via Landsat-1 which was carried. out in several phases. Successful field installation and test transmissions demonstrated the feasibility of repetitive long-distance (that is, 4,800-km) data transmission and reception from a volcanic environment in Iceland via the Landsat Data Collection System. Temperature data were transmitted for a 38-day period in November and December 1972. A near-surface vertical gradient of 69.4 °C/m was obtained, suggesting a mixed mechanism of heat transfer, partitioned between conduction and convection. Comparison of four methods for estimating fluxes between 500 and 1,500 <i><span>μ</span></i>cal cm<sup>-2</sup>s<sup>-1</sup>, using temperature data derived from the Data Collection Platform, suggests that, where the only temperature available are from the surface and a depth of 1 m, methods of estimating the net geothermal flux from examination of spectral radiance are superior to methods that assume dominant convection or conduction. A computerized thermal-modeling technique to construct parametric diurnal surface-temperature curves is particularly applicable. Records of 20 gaged basins in the Delmarva Peninsula of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia were analyzed for 40 statistical streamflow characteristics. Equations relating these characteristics to basin characteristics were obtained by a technique of multiple linear regression. A control group of equations contains basin characteristics derived from maps. An experimental group of equations contains basin characteristics derived from maps and imagery. Characteristics from imagery were forest, riparian (streambank) vegetation, water, and combined agricultural and urban land use. These basin characteristics were isolated photographically by techniques of film-density discrimination. The area of each characteristic in each basin was measured photometrically. Comparison of equations in the control group with corresponding equations in the experimental group reveals that for 12 out of 40 equations the standard error of estimate was reduced by more than 10 percent. As an example, the standard error of estimate of the equation for the 5-year recurrence-interval flood peak was reduced from 46 to 32 percent. Similarly, the standard error of the equation for the mean monthly flow for September was reduced from 32 to 24 percent, the standard error for the 7-day, 2-year recurrence low flow was reduced from 136 to 102 percent, and the standard error for the 3-day, 2-year flood volume was reduced from 30 to 12 percent. Imagery from the TIROS satellite for 5 wide]y scattered locations in arctic North America was obtained for three 3-day intervals in June 1973 and 1974.  These pictures were used to expand fragmentary habitat data available from ground observations.  Late disappearance of snow and ice may prevent or retard nesting effort and reproductive success.  Our immediate aim is to recognize years of catastrophic or very good production; however, supporting information from ground studies, LANDSAT imagery, analyses of banding data, and studies of age ratios in popu]ations and harvests eventua]]y may permit assessment of relative reproductive success.  Satellite images from both Multi-Spectral Scanner and Very High Resolution Radiomder sensors were first used as management tools for consideration in setting the U.S. and Canadian regulations for the 1975-76 goose hunting season. The Salar of Uyuni is the largest of the South American evaporite deposits. The discovery of copper mineralization along a lineament mapped in Area 7 (La Paz) has lent credence to the use of LANDSAT 1 data as a basic step in mineral exploration. In Area 9 (Copiapo Region), a number of lineaments were found to be associated with the largest copper deposits of the region. In Area 12 (Magallanes), the identification of what is believed to be a tertiary basin from LANDSAT 1 data has resulted in a new area for petroleum exploration. Band 7 images, as black and white transparencies, were found to be the most useful for geologic interpretation in both tropical vegetated areas and desert regions. Color composites made by the diazochrome process, chromaline process, and from color additive viewers provided additional information. Mosaics of LANDSAT 1 data covering 4 x 6 degrees of latitude and longitude compiled at the 1:1,000,000 scale were found to be an ideal size and format for most
