This report summarizes the methods of study and describes reconnaissance and site-selection procedures, locations and characteristics of the stations, instrumentation, and methods of collecting and storing data.\r\n\r\nThe first phase of this study involved an intensive field reconnaissance of about 7,000 sites, of which 32 basins were selected for detailed analysis. Drainage areas for the basins varied from 0.13 to 6.45 square miles, and main-channel slopes ranged from 7.6 to 276 feet per mile.\r\n\r\nFive years of 5-minute rainfall-runoff data will be colledted for each study site. These data will be used to calibrate and verify a rainfall-runoff model for each basin. The calibrated model will be used in conjunction with 80 years of National Weather Service 5-minute precipitation data to synthesize a representative 80-year streamflow record at each site. A Log-Pearson Type III frequency distribution will be applied to each record to define the magnitudes and frequencies of flood volumes at each site. These data will be used to develop regionalized multiple regression models for estimating flood-volume magnitudes and frequencies at small rural ungaged sites in Ohio.\r\n\r\nThe report also summarizes rainfall-runoff data collected from July 1981 through September 1983, but does not interpret the data. An average of eleven event periods per site were monitored where maximum 5-minute rainfall intensities varied from 0.02 to .067 inches and maximum peak discharges varied from 1 to 1,130 cubic feet per The information was needed because the EPA had confirmed the presence of dioxin contamination at Bubbling Spring Horse Arena and on properties in Romaine and Rock Creek basins. Streambed sampling in the upstream reaches of Romaine Creek shows that dioxin is leaving the sites. Because dioxin strongly adsorbs onto fine sediments, it is believed to be transported with the sediments by water erosion. Sediment yields from two sampling sites along Romaine Creek generally were small during base-flow periods; however, instantaneous storm-runoff sediment discharges as large as 1.7 lbs/sec occurred at the downstream site. Typical instantaneous sediment discharges during storm-runoff sampling ranged from &lt;0.1 to 0.5 lb/sec. More than 99% of the suspended sediment was of silt- or clay-size particles (fines); this was true for both base-flow and storm-runoff periods. Suspended sediment collected during the storm of October 20, 1983, was analyzed for dioxin. At the upstream site, the dioxin concentration was 15.3 parts per billion (ppb) in the sediment, but none was detected in the residual water layer at a detection limit of 1 ppb. No dioxin was detected at the downstream site in either the sediment or residual water layer at the 1 ppb detection limit. A cataclastically foliated syenogranite, the oldest rock exposed in the quadrangle, crops out in a restricted area in the south-central part of the quadrangle. Younger, weakly metamorphosed metarhyolite and minor metabasalt, arkosic sandstone, and conglomerate crop out north of the syenogranite and are correlated with lithologically similar rocks exposed to the south that comprise the Hadn formation. Most of the intrusive rocks in the quadrangle are peralkaline or have a peralkaline affinity and are characterized by the presence of soda pyriboles. A large mountain known as Jibal Aja extends into the southeast corner of the quadrangle and is composed of postorogenic peralkaline alkali granite plutons that form concentric rings around a core granophyre. A small plug of Tertiary alkali basalt crops out near the southeast corner of the quadrangle. Eighty percent of the quadrangle is covered by a thick accumulation of eolian sand that forms the southern edge of the An Nafud dune field.</p>\n<p>The plutons of the Aja suite represent samples of magma that depict the evolution of a batholith-scale magma body that solidified to the Aja suite. The major- and rare-earthelement chemical variation observed among the components of the suite is a consequence of a discontinuous process that involved chemical evolution via separation of silicate liquid from earlier formed crystals, and emplacement of batches of magma, whose compositions represent stages of the process.</p>\n<p>Resource potential in the quadrangle is low. No ancient mines are reported in this quadrangle. Geochemical data for a limited number of pan concentrates of wadi sediment from wadis draining the peralkaline rocks of Jibal Aja show distinctive associations of incompatible lithophile elements.
