One of these marks, 3219, Vincent, California (fig. 1), lies within the area of the Pacific-North American plate boundary; the other, 22Q, Bill Williams River, Arizona (fig. 1), falls within what is believed to be a singularly stable section of southwestern Arizona. Because the levelings that produced these heights were characterized by especially disparate routes with respect to both terrain and climate, the resulting heights provide a test for the existence and magnitude of path-dependent error in geodetic leveling. These two marks were chosen both because of their relative stability with respect to adjacent marks and because their tectonic stability (or instability) can be inferred from the geologic record. In 1970 the population of Georgia was about 4,600,000. By 1980 it had rcached an estimated 5,500,000, a 20-percent increase. The amount of irrigated land in the State incrcased from 79,600 acres to nearly one million acres during the decade, which resulted in a 12-fold increase in irrigation water use. The value of goods produced by Georgia's industries increased from $21,000,000 in 1970 to $32,000,000 in 1980 (figures adjusted for inflation). These were the major factors contributing to the significant increase in water use.\r\n\r\nFor years, ground water and surface water in Georgia were thought of as unlimited natural resources. However, with the impact of recent droughts and the increasing demand for water it has become apparent that proper management of Georgia's water resources is necessary to assure continuing supplies of good-quality water. To make decisions on wa ter resources, a manager needs comprehensive, up-to-date information on the quantity of water being used in the State, and the total resources available for The purpose was to assist the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in evaluating the potential for developing additional stock-water supplies. Hydrologic and geologic conditions at most of the sites were verified by onsite inspection during the summer of 1984. Each site is described in terms of location, altitude of land surface, inferred aquifer(s), estimated depth to water, estimated drilling depth, estimated yield, estimated dissolved-solids concentration, hydrogeologic setting, and development. A plate shows the location of wells and springs, dissolved-solids concentrations and chemical-constituent diagrams for water samples, ownership status for selected rangeland areas near Dillon. Studies are now in progress in Austin, and Houston. Studies have been completed in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas.</p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Houston, began studies in the Houston metropolitan area in 1964. The program was expanded in 1968 to include collection of water-quality data. The objectives of the Houston urban-hydrology study are as follows:</p>\n<ol>\n<li>To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydro!ogic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of flood peaks and flood volumes.</li>\n<li>To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volumes.</li>\n<li>To ascertain the variation in water quality for different flow conditions and different seasons.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>This report, the eighteenth in a series of reports to be published annually, is primarily applicable to objective 2.
