Six lives were lost, many people were temporarily left homeless, and damages amounted to nearly $115 million. The maximum rainfall of 23 inches occurred 5 miles north of Clyde, Texas, in about 34 hours.</p>\n<p>Flood discharges along the East Fork Little Wichita River in Texas and along the Blue River, Clear Boggy Creek, and part of Muddy Boggy Creek in Oklahoma in the Red River basin exceeded those previously known. The Red River near Gainesville, Texas, had a record stage. Severe flooding also occurred along the West Fork and Elm Fork Trinity Rivers in Texas. The Brazos River experienced record flooding along tributaries in Abilene and Breckenridge, Texas, and the Brazos River near Glen Rose had a record stage that was almost 1.5 feet higher than any previous flood.</p>\n<p>Substantial reductions in peak stages and discharges on the West Fork Trinity River downstream from Eagle Mountain Reservoir were attained as a result of reservoir storage. All floodwater on the Elm Fork Trinity River was contained by reservoir storage thus preventing a potentially devastating flood downstream on the Trinity River. The oldest rocks comprise the Precambrian Namtah Formation of the Halaban(?) group, and consist of basalt, dacite, siltstone, and calcareous greywacke metamorphosed in the lower amphibolite facies. Metamorphic rocks of uncertain Precambrian age in the northern part of the quadrangle are amphibolite, gneissic quartz diorite and metarhyolite that occur as roof pendants in plutonic rocks. Precambrian intrusive rocks, in order of decreasing age, are: biotite-hornblende tonalite; the locally gneissic Dawasir granodiorite and granite; the as Sabahah granite, coarse-grained alkaline granite; biotite-muscovite granite forming a small circular stock; the Janban granite, a coarse-grained non-foliated alkali-feldspar rapakiyl granite; aplitic granite; and fine-grained alkali granite that forms a stock, plugs, and dikes. Andesite dikes cut most of the plutonic rock units. Precambrian rocks are unconformably overlain by the Wajid Sandstone of Cambrian and Ordovician age, which covers the southeastern half of the quadrangle and consists of reddish-brown, medium-grained arkosic sandstone. Tertiary lake beds of gray marl, siltstone, and sandstone crop out locally, and lie unconformably on the Wajid. Streams involved in the studies were the North Platte, North Loup, Elkhorn, and Big Blue Rivers and Salt Creek. Rhodamine WT dye in a 20 percent solution was used as the tracer for all 10 time-of-travel studies. Water samples were collected at several points below each injection site. Concentrations of dye in the samples were measured by determining fluorescence of the sample and comparing that value to fluorescence-concentration curves. Stream discharges were measured before and during each study. Results of each time-by-travel study are shown on two tables and on graph. The first table shows water discharge at injection and sampling sites, distance between sites, and time and rate of travel of the dye between sites. The second table provides descriptions of study sites, amounts of dye injected in the streams, actual sampling times, and actual concentrations of dye detected. The graphs for each time-of-travel study provide indications of changing travel rates between sampling sites, information on length of dye clouds, and times for dye passage past given points. Plate 1 shows the location of surface-water streamflow or reservoircontent and chemical-qual ity or sediment stations in Texas. Plate 2 shows the location of partial-record surface-water stations.</p>\n<p>This index shows the station number and name, latitude and longitude, type of data collected, and the office principally responsible for the data collection (table 1). An 8-digit permanent numerical designation for gaging stations has been adopted on a nationwide basis; stations are numbered and listed in downstream order. In the downstream direction along the main stem, all stations on a tributary entering above a main-stem station are listed before that station. A tributary entering between two main-stem stations is listed between them. A similar order is followed in listing stations on first rank, second rank, and other ranks of tributaries. To indicate the rank of any tributary on which a gaging station is situated and the stream to which it is an immediate tributary, each indention in the listing of gaging stations represent one rank. This downstream order and system of indention show which gaging stations are on tributaries between any two stations on a main stem and the rank of the tributary on which each gaging station is situated. The Wilcox Group in the eastern part of the county has adequate supplies to meet the expected water demands in the foreseeable future. The thicker zones of the Wilcox Group can supply yields in excess of 500 gallons per minute. The Midway Group can supply yields in excess of 100 gallons per minute from the Tehuacana Member of the Kincaid Formation. This represents the largest well yields from the Midway Group in Texas. The Midway Group elsewhere in the State is mostly a poor water producer and is not considered an aquifer. The Taylor Marl and Navarro Group furnish only small quantities of ground water to wells in the western part of the county where these units crop out. The Hosston and Travis Peak Formations are present at depths in excess of 2,000 feet. These formations, which contain slightly saline water in the western part of the county, could be expected to produce water with a temperature of about 150&deg;F that might be used for heating purposes.</p>\n<p>About 0.9 million gallons per day of ground water was used for all purposes in 1980. This use has declined since 1955 but is expected to increase as additional public-supply and industrial wells are being developed. The Wilcox Group is capable of annually yielding at least 14,000 acre-feet or 11.6 million gallons per day of water to wells on a long-term basis.</p>\n<p>Generally, the ground water is of acceptable quality for most uses. Relatively high dissolved-solids and iron concentrations are the major water-quality problems. Water-quality problems that may be the result of man's activities are limited to a small oilfield area near Mexia.</p>\n<p>Lignite mining from the Wilcox Group is expected to take place in the foreseeable future. The Floridan aquifer system is the principal source of potable water in the area. The focus of the map is the potentiometric surface in the Jumper Creek Canal area. Water level measurements were made on approximately 60 wells. The potentiometric surface ranged in altitude from more than 90 feet in the southeastern part of the county to less than 40 feet northwest of lake Panasoffkee in the west-central area.
