The overlying Bullfrog and Prow Pass Members are well exposed at the \ntype locality of the formation near the southeast edge of Crater Flat, just \nnorth of U.S. Highway 95. In previous work, the Tram Member was thought to be \nthe Bullfrog Member, and therefore was shown as Bullfrog or as \nundifferentiated Crater Flat Tuff on published maps. The revised Crater Flat \nTuff is stratigraphically below the Topopah Spring Member of the Paintbrush \nTuff and above the Grouse Canyon Member of the Belted Range Tuff, and is \napproximately 13.6 m.y. old.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Drill holes on Yucca Mountain and near Fortymile Wash penetrate all three \nmembers of the Crater Flat as well as an underlying quartz-poor unit, which is \nherein defined as the Lithic Ridge Tuff from exposures on Lithic Ridge near \nthe head of Topopah Wash. In outcrops between Calico Hills and Yucca Flat, \nthe Lithic Ridge Tuff overlies a Bullfrog-like unit of reverse magnetic polarity that probably correlates with a widespread unit around and under \nYucca Flat, referred to previously as Crater Flat Tuff. This unit is here \ninformally designated as the tuff of Yucca Flat. Although older, it may be \ngenetically related to the Crater Flat Tuff.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Although the rocks are poorly exposed, geophysical and geologic evidence \nto date suggests that (1) the source of the Crater Flat Tuff is a caldera \ncomplex in the Crater Flat area between Yucca Mountain and Bare Mountain, and \n(2) there are at least two cauldrons within this complex--one probably associated with eruption of the Tram, the other with the Bullfrog and Prow \nPass Members. The complex is named the Crater Flat-Prospector Pass caldera \ncomplex. Water quality in this reach does not meet Ohio water-quality standards for dissolved oxygen, fecal bacteria, ammonia, and lead. Earthquake magnitudes were redetermined as necessary to make them as consistent as possible with the Gutenberg methods and results, which necessarily make up much of the data base. Measurement errors were estimated for the three variables for 58 moderate to large shallow-focus earthquakes. Regression analyses were then made utilizing the estimated measurement errors. \r\nThe regression analysis demonstrates that the relations among the variables magnitude, length, and displacement are stochastic in nature. The stochastic variance, introduced in part by incomplete surface expression of seismogenic faulting, variation in shear modulus, and regional factors, dominates the estimated measurement errors. Thus, it is appropriate to use ordinary least squares for the regression models, rather than regression models based upon an underlying deterministic relation with the variance resulting from measurement errors. \r\n\r\nSignificant differences exist in correlations of certain combinations of length, displacement, and magnitude when events are qrouped by fault type or by region, including attenuation regions delineated by Evernden and others. Subdivision of the data results in too few data for some fault types and regions, and for these only regressions using all of the data as a group are reported. \r\n\r\nEstimates of the magnitude and the standard deviation of the magnitude of a prehistoric or future earthquake associated with a fault can be made by correlating M with the logarithms of rupture length, fault displacement, or the product of length and displacement. Fault rupture area could be reliably estimated for about 20 of the events in the data set. Regression of MS on rupture area did not result in a marked improvement over regressions that did not involve rupture area.
