In the type section (Lonsdale 65-1 core, Rice County, Minnesota) the Solor Church Formation (Middle Proterozoic, Keweenawan Supergroup) consists primarily of reddish-brown mudstone and siltstone and pale reddish-brown sandstone. The sandstone and siltstone are texturally and mineralogically immature. Hydrocarbon source-rock evaluation of bluish-gray, greenish-gray and medium-dark-gray to grayish-black beds, which primarily occur in the lower 104 m (340 ft) of this core, shows: (1) the rocks have low organic carbon contents (<0.5 percent for 22 of 25 samples); (2) the organic matter is thermally very mature (Tmax = 494°C, sample 19) and is probably near the transition between the wet gas phase of catagenesis and metagenesis (dry gas zone); and (3) the rocks have minimal potential for producing additional hydrocarbons (genetic potential <0.30 mgHC/gm rock). Although no direct evidence exists from which to determine maximum depths of burial, the observed thermal maturity of the organic matter requires significantly greater depths of burial and(or) higher geothermal gradients. It is likely, at least on the St. Croix horst, that thermal alteration of the organic matter in the Solor Church took place relatively early, and that any hydrocarbons generated during this early thermal alteration were probably lost prior to deposition of the overlying Fond du Lac Formation (Middle Proterozoic, Keweenawan Supergroup).

Fresh to slightly saline water is available in most parts of Rusk County, which is located in the Piney Woods region of northeast Texas. The Wilcox aquifer, which underlies the entire county, was the source of most of the ground water withdrawn during 1980. Other units capable of yielding fresh ground water are the Carrizo, Queen City, and Sparta aquifers and the Reklaw Formation.

About 5.4 million gallons per day (20,440 cubic meters per day) of ground water was used for all purposes during 1980. Of this amount, about 78 percent was used for public supply, 10 percent for mining, 8 percent for industrial purposes, and 4 percent for rural domestic use. Water levels have declined extensively at the city of Henderson, which used about 38 percent of all ground water consumed in Rusk County.

\n

Generally, the ground water is of acceptable quality. Water in some of the near-surface beds and some of the deeper sands in the Wilcox aquifer may have become mineralized because of oilfield operations. Ground-water contamination by oilfield brines at Henderson Oil Field has been documented. Two separate instances of streamflow contamination at Striker Creek and Henderson Oil Field have been documented.

\n

Moderate amounts of ground water are available for development. The amount that is available perennially is not known, but it is greater than that being withdrawn. Assuming a hydraulic gradient of about 8 feet per mile (1.5 meters per kilometer), at least 12 million gallons per day (45,420 cubic meters per day) of fresh ground water is being transmitted through the Wilcox and about 3 million gallons per day (11,350 cubic meters per day) through the Carrizo. About 20 million acre-feet (24,660 cubic hectometers) of freshwater is available from storage in the Wilcox and about 4 million acre-feet (4,930 cubic hectometers) from storage in the Carrizo. Additional amounts of slightly saline water are available from the major aquifers. Smaller but undetermined amounts of fresh ground water are available from the Sparta and Queen City aquifers and from the Reklaw Formation. Properly constructed wells in the Wilcox and Carrizo aquifers can be expected to yield more than 500 gallons per minute (32 liters per second) if the wells are properly spaced. Development of additional resources around the city of Henderson and the Mount Enterprise Fault System should be considered cautiously because of the probability of saltwater encroachment. Ground water in other parts of the county is practically undeveloped.

\n

Some mineralization of ground water is due to natural causes. Other mineralization of ground water is due to contamination. A program needs to be initiated to determine the extent and cause of mineralization that has taken place in freshwater sands. Water-quality data is needed at Henderson in order to monitor saltwater encroachment.

The Al Makhul quadrangle (26/42 B) lies in the northern part of the Arabian Shield between lat 26°30' and 27°00' N. and long 42°30' and 43°00' E. Amphibolite, the oldest metamorphic rock exposed in the quadrangle, crops out in a restricted area in the south-central part of the quadrangle. Younger, weakly metamorphosed rhyolite, basalt, and graywacke sandstone on the west edge of the quadrangle are correlated with lithologically similar rocks exposed to the southwest that comprise the Hibshi formation. The Turmus formation, located in the north-central part of the quadrangle, is composed of weakly metamorphosed andesite flow rocks, andesitic agglomerate, and related volcanic graywacke and is similar in metamorphic grade, age relations with intrusive rocks, and structural character to the rocks on the west edge of the quadrangle; it is thought to be approximately coeval with them.

\n

Seven plutonic units, ranging in composition from gabbro and diorite to alkali-feldspar granite, intrude the weakly metamorphosed rocks. Some of these plutons are offset along a northwest-trending fault of the Najd fault system but their emplacement postdates all other major tectonic episodes in the area. The weakly metamorphosed rocks were deposited on an erosional surface underlain by a pluton composed of quartz diorite.

\n

Quaternary alkali basalt crops out in the northwest part of the quadrangle. These rocks are at the southeast edge of Harrat al Hutaymah, a basalt field composed of flow rocks, tuff rings, and cinder cones.

\n

Mineral potential in the quadrangle is low. At a very small prospect pit in the north-central part of the quadrangle, massive, milky quartz veins cutting weakly metamorphosed volcanogenic sedimentary rocks are stained blue and green by copper minerals. A previously reported mine site in the southern part of the quadrangle was not relocated.
