These studies are now in progress in Austin and Houston. Studies were completed in the Fort Worth metropolitan area at the end of the 1977 water year, and in the Dallas metropolitan area at the end of the 1979 water year. The study in the San Antonio area was completed at the end of the 1981 water year.</p><p>The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing streamflow network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. In September 1968, the program was further expanded to include the collection of water-quality data. The Texas Department of Water Resources ended its participation in the project in 1979, and the city of San Antonio funded the program through the 1981 water year.</p><p>The operation and maintenance of stations 08178000, San Antonio River at San Antonio; 08178700, Salado Creek (upper station) at San Antonio; and 08178800, Salado Creek (lower station) at San Antonio are funded by the city of San Antonio and the U.S Geological Survey.</p><p>The operation and maintenance and collection of water-quality data at station 08178720, Lorence Creek at Thousand Oaks Blvd., San Antonio, station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio, are funded by the Edwards Underground Water District in cooperation with the Texas Department of Hater Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey. Station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio will provide hydrologic data on similar and adjacent watersheds. The lines were located between latitudes 39° and 40°10'N and longitudes 73°50' and 74° 40'W. High-resolution seismicreflection data were collected using an EG&amp;G Uniboom (400-4000 Hz) and an ORE Mode! 1035 (3.5 kHz) subbottom profiling system in conjunction with a Klein Sidescan Sonar System (100 kHz). While the quality of the data is variable, it is virtually all usable and generally of good quality but rarely excellent. Due to equipment failure, only 880 km of 3.5 kHz and 796 km of sidescan-sonar data were recorded. Navigation was by Loran-C. and fixes were recorded at 5-minute time intervals with some gaps in the data.</p><p>Analysis of the sidescan-sonar data shows five recognizable features in the study area. Megaripples (2-3 m crestal spacing) were recorded almost exclusively on coast parallel tracklines, and were most abundant at distances of 10 to 20 km offshore. Nonlinear light and dark patches were abundant in the northern half of the study area and offshore to the south. Two groups of linear light and dark bands were observed as being clearly parallel or oblique to the bathymetric contours and were noted throughout the survey area. Trawl marks were noted on only one line near the shore, just north of Barnegat Inlet.</p><p>These observations indicate widespread, perhaps frequent, movement of the surface sands on the Inner New Jersey continental shelf. Directions of sediment transport are suggested by the orientation of the alternating light and dark bands and the ripples, assuming a parallel and/or transverse relative movement. Asymmetry of the ripples was not observed on the sidescan sonographs.</p><p>The high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles indicate three distinct types of subbottom stratigraphy in the top 20 to 40 m of sediment. Reflectors in the area north of Barnegat Inlet dip gently (&lt;1° ) to the south-southeast. The thirty plotted reflectors are 5 to 12 m apart (vertically), are essentially parallel, and are truncated on the updip (northern) limits where they outcrop or subcrop (under a 2-4 m overburden). Truncated by erosion, they are the dominant cause of N65° east-striking topographic ridges in this offshore region. The age of the reflectors is· inferred to be Tertiary from the strike and dip, which are the same as the Tertiary beds of adjacent New Jersey.</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr83422","usgsCitation":"McClennen, C.E., 1983, High-Resolution Seismic Profile and Sidescan-Sonar Data Collected During June 1980 Offshore New Jersey, Whitefoot Cruise 80-1: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-422, 5 p, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83422.","productDescription":"5 p","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144344,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259852,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0422/ofr1983422.pdf","text":"Report","size":"8.25 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1983-422"}],"contact":"<p><a href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\" data-mce-href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\">Coastal and Marine Geology Program</a><br> U.S. Geological Survey<br> 384 Woods Hole Road<br> Woods Hole, MA 02543</p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db688870","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McClennen, Charles E.","contributorId":67891,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McClennen","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161063,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A new orebody on the southern side of the ancient workings, known as the South orebody, is being developed by Gold Fields-Mahd adh Dhahab Limited. A suite of samples was collected from the newly exposed orebody for preliminary mineralogic, stable isotope, fluid inclusion, and geochemical studies. \r\n\r\nThe Mahd adh Dhahab deposit is in the carapace of a Proterozoic epizonal rhyolite stock that domed pyroclastic and metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Halaban group. Ore of gold, silver, copper, zinc, tellurium, and lead is associated with north-trending, steeply dipping quartz veins in a zone 1,000 m long and 400 m wide. The veins include an assemblage of quartz-chlorite-pyrite-hematite-chalcopyrite-sphalerite-precious metals, which is similar to the mineral assemblage at the epithermal deposit at Creede, Colorado. \r\n\r\nThe primary ore contains abundant chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite in addition to a complex precious metal assemblage. Gold and silver occur principally as minute grains of telluride minerals disseminated in quartz-chlorite-hematite and as inclusions in chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Telluride minerals include petzite, hessite, and sylvanite. Free gold is present but not abundant. \r\n\r\nAll of the vein-quartz samples contained abundant, minute inclusions of both low-density, vapor-rich fluids and liquid-rich fluids. Primary fluid inclusions yielded homogenization temperatures of from 110? to 238? C. Preliminary light-stable isotope studies of the sulfide minerals and quartz showed that all of the d34S values are between 1.2 and 6.3 per mil, which is a typical range for hydrothermal sulfide minerals that derive their sulfur from an igneous source. \r\n\r\nThe data-suggest that the sulfide sulfur isotope geochemistry was controlled by exchange with la large sulfur isotope reservoir at depth.\r\n\r\nThe d18O values of all stages of vein quartz in the South orebody range between 8.5 and 11.1 per mil. This range is similar to that for quartz from the North orebody and indicates that the hydrothermal system consisted of dominantly exchanged meteoric water, which was uniform in temperature and d18O content throughout the area during the entire period of mineralization.\r\n\r\nLead isotope analyses of two galena samples indicate that the lead in the South orebody is less radiogenic than that from the North orebody and confirm that the lead was derived from oceanic crust approximately 700 Ma ago.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83291","usgsCitation":"Rye, R.O., Hall, W., Cunningham, C.G., Czamanske, G., Afifi, A., and Stacey, J.S., 1983, Preliminary mineralogic, fluid inclusion, and stable isotope study of the Mahd adh Dhahab gold mine, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-291, 26 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83291.","productDescription":"26 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141579,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0291/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34855,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0291/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cdfb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rye, Robert O. rrye@usgs.gov","contributorId":1486,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rye","given":"Robert","email":"rrye@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":155633,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hall, W. This Jurassic intrusion displays large and systematic chemical and mineralogical zonation over a horizontal distance of 5 km. Major-element variations compare closely with Dalyls average andesite-dacite-rhyolite over an SiO2 range of 63 to 76 percent. \r\n\r\nFor various reasons it was originally thought that assimilation played a dominant role in development of the Snake Creek-Williams Canyon pluton. However, based on modeling of more recently obtained trace element and isotopic data, we have concluded that the zonation is the result of in-situ fractional crystallization, with little assimilation at the level of crystallization. \r\n\r\nThis report summarizes data available for each of the mineral species present in the zoned intrusion. Special attention has been paid to trends We present oxygen and strontium isotopic data for olivine tholeiites, evolved (that is, differentiated and (or) contaminated) lavas, rhyolites, and crustal- derived xenoliths from the Snake River Plain. These data show that the olivine tholeiites are fairly uniform in d80 (5.1 to 6.2) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.7056 to 0.7076) and reveal no correlation between these ratios. The tholeiites are considered representative of mantle-derived magmas that have not interacted significantly with crustal material or meteoric water. The evolved lavas display a wider range in d 80 (5.6 to 7.6) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.708 to 0.717) with positive correlations between these ratios in some suites but not in others. Crustal xenoliths have high and variable 8?Sr/86Sr (0.715 to 0.830) and d80 values that vary widely (6.7 to 9.2) and are a few permil greater than d80 values of the Snake River basalts. Thus, isotopic data for the evolved lavas are permissive of small degrees of contamination by crustal rocks similar to the most d80-depleted xenoliths. The d80 enrichments in some evolved lavas also are consistent with crystal fractionation processes and do not necessarily require bulk interaction with crustal rocks. Enrichment in d80 but not in 87Sr/86Sr in one suite of evolved lavas suggests that crustal contamination may not be essential to the petrogenesis of those lavas. Other suites of evolved lavas display large variations in 87Sr/86Sr that reflect at least some selective contamination with 87St. \r\n\r\nBulk solid/liquid oxygen-isotope fractionation factors (a's) calculated for the evolved lavas from Craters of the Moon National Monument are comparatively large. These a's are dependent upon the nature and proportions of phases removed by crystal fractionation; basaltic lava a's differ from latitic lava a?s in accordance with different phenocryst assemblages in these rocks. \r\n\r\nSnake River Plain rhyolites are isotopically distinct from both the analyzed crustal xenoliths and olivine tholeiites. Their origin remains poorly understood, but crustal or sub-crustal sources may be viable. In the first case, they must be derived by anatexis of material distinct from the analyzed crustal xenoliths. In the second case, they must be derived from material unlike the source for tholeiites. No cogenetic relation with the tholeiites seems likely on the basis of available data. that might relate to the variation in the chemical petrology of the pluton.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83338","usgsCitation":"Leeman, W.P., and Whelan, J.F., 1983, Oxygen and strontium isotopic studies of basaltic lavas from the Snake River plain, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-338, 35 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83338.","productDescription":"35 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143338,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0338/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37775,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0338/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db68a0dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leeman, William P.","contributorId":87142,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leeman","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160600,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Whelan, Joseph F.","contributorId":29792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whelan","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160599,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The kimberlite cuts Proterozoic volcanic rocks that overlie Archean basement, but is post-Ordovician in age based on abundant Ordovician(?) dolomite inclusions. Xenocrysts and megacrysts are ilmenite (abundant, 12.5-19% MgO), pyropealmandine and Cr-pyrope (up to 9.3% Cr2O3), Cr-diopside (up to 4.5% Cr2O3), olivine (Fo 91), enstatite and phlogopite. The kimberlite contains fragments of crustal schist and granulite, as well as disaggregated crystals and rare xenoliths of eclogites, garnet pyroxenites and garnet peridotites from a heterogeneous upper mantle. Eclogites, up to 3 cm size, show granoblastic equant or tabular textures and consist of jadeitic cpx (up to 8.4% Na20, 15.3% Al2O3), pyrope-almandine, ? rutile ? kyanite ? sanidine ? sulfide. Garnet pyroxenite contains pyrope--(0.44% Cr2O3) + cpx (0.85% Na2O, 0.53% Cr2O3) + Mg-Al spinel. Mineral compositions of rare composite xenocrysts of garnet + cpx are distinctively peridotitic, pyroxenitic or eclogitic. Calculated temperatures of equilibration are 920-1060 ?C for the eclogites and 820-910?C for the garnet pyroxenite using the Ellis-Green method. Five peridotite garnet-clinopyroxene composite xenocrysts have calculated temperatures of 980-1120?C using the Lindsley-Dixon 20 kb solvus. Spinel pyroxenite and clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene composites have lower calculated temperatures of 735?C and 820-900?C, respectively. Kyanite-bearing eclogites must have formed at pressures greater than 18-20 kb. Using the present shield geotherm with a heat flow value of 44mW/m 2 for the time of kimberlite emplacement, the eclogite temperatures imply pressures of 35-48 kb (105-140 km) and the garnet pyroxenite temperatures indicate pressures of 24-29 kb (75-90 km). Temperatures of two peridotitic garnet-cpx composite xenocrysts if on a shield geotherm, imply pressures within the diamond stability field.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83156","usgsCitation":"McGee, E.S., and Hearn, B., 1983, Lake Ellen kimberlite, Michigan, U.S.A.: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-156, 24 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83156.","productDescription":"24 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143095,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0156/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38117,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0156/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4359","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGee, E.
