This paper presents geophysical data obtained, in the western reaches of the Old Bahama Channel separating Cuba and the Bahamas (Figure 1). These data were collected as part of an ongoing investigation of Caribbean and Bahaman geology primarily conducted by University of Miami and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The work was done on the R/V Gilliss of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, (RSMAS), University of Miami. The scientific party included members of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) and RSMAS.

The analytical values for lead, zinc, selenium, and cadmium in ash of tree branches are significantly higher in samples from areas of known mineralization (13 sites) than in samples from areas of no known mineralization (12 sites). Geometric mean concentrations of these elements in the two areas (mineralized; nonmineralized), quoted as parts per million in ash, are lead (122; 28), zinc (713; 443), selenium (1.2; 0.6), and cadmium (1.4; 0.5). \r\n\r\nThe range of molybdenum values in ash from the two areas is similar, but a cluster of four sites in an area classified as nonmineralized corresponds to an area where the U.S. Geological Survey reported anomalous molybdenum values in rock in 1965. Results for other elements were either equivocal (mercury, tellurium, silver) or showed no correspondence to the two areas. Mean values for barium, manganese, potassium, and sodium are significantly higher in areas of no known mineralization, but we conclude that this reflects a difference in country rock major-element chemistry rather than the effect of ore-forming processes. \r\n\r\nThe pattern of trace-metal values in Acacia ash is present whether the sampled tree grows on bedrock, on talus, or on residual or modern alluvium. The low-temperature geothermal systems consist of 978 isolated hydrothermal-convection systems, 148 delineated-area hydrothermal-convection systems, and 42 delineated-area conduction-dominated systems. Minimum, median, and maximum concentrations and percentage of samples above the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for all wells in the statewide network. More detailed areal statistical summaries are presented for nine chemical constituents for which more than 3% of the observed concentrations exceeded the ' maximum contaminate level ' for that constituent. The State was divided into 14 ground-water regions based on water-use and physiographic characteristics. Summaries for these nine constituents include quartile values and percentage of samples with concentrations above the ' maximum contaminant level ' for each ground-water region. Accompanying figures show median concentrations and percentages of concentrations exceeding the ' maximum contaminant levels ' established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for each ground-water region. Washington during 1979 and 1980. In one segment, kettle lakes were found to be closely associated with the ground-water system. In the other four segments, a close relationship was found between streamflow and ground water. It was concluded that additional ground-water development would adversely affect lake levels and streamflow, thereby reducing surface-water resources already closed to further appropriation. The ground-water divide between the Bonaparte and Sanpoil basins was 6 miles southeast of where it was estimated to be. The observation well network provides a continuing program of collection, analysis, and storage of groundwater level data required to define and describe the groundwater resources of Kansas. Accurate groundwater information is the single most important item for management of the State 's groundwater resource and is required for the application of research to the solution of groundwater related problems. The information provided by the observation well network is needed at all management levels to aid in the evaluation and conservation of groundwater. The U.S. Geological Survey has been collecting water-resource information for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management since the program was started. This report summarizes the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's hydrologic information needs in the different stages of the land-use planning and coal-leasing process and presents an evaluation of the use of the U.S. Geological Survey's precipitation-runoff model from a Bureau of Land Management perspective. Information collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for precipitation, surface water, ground water, and water quality has been used extensively in environmental assessments and site-specific analyses for coal leasing. \r\n\r\nThe U.S. Geological Survey also has been calibrating a precipitation-runoff model used to estimate the surface discharge of ungaged basins in northwestern Colorado. A test of the model shows that it will provide surface-discharge estimates for ungaged basins within the accuracy required for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's land-use planning and coal-leasing process. However, the model is most effective when applied by an experienced user.
