The purpose of these logging measurements is to provide in-situ physical properties information that is not commercially available on drill hole UE25a-3. Well logs are presented in this paper for dual-detector density, normal resistivity, gamma-ray, neutron-neutron, induced polarization, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These data are analyzed for correlations with the core lithology. Hole-to-surface measurements made from drill hole UE25a-3 indicate the presence of two resistive bodies at depth. The deeper resistive anomaly may be related to a granitic intrusion.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80126","usgsCitation":"Daniels, J.J., and Scott, J.H., 1980, Borehole geophysical measurements for hole UE25-3, Nevada Test Site, Nuclear Waste Isolation Program: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-126, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80126.","productDescription":"32 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":400339,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0126/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146635,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0126/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Nevada Test Site","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.4605712890625,\n              36.79169061907076\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.9881591796875,\n              36.79169061907076\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.9881591796875,\n              37.081475648860525\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.4605712890625,\n              37.081475648860525\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.4605712890625,\n              36.79169061907076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db6029fe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Daniels, Jeffrey J.","contributorId":87938,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167475,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scott, James H.","contributorId":73579,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167474,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Pleistocene","docAbstract":"Knowledge of the magnitude of water-table rise during Pleistocene pluvial climates, and of the resultant shortening of groundwater flow path and reduction in unsaturated zone thickness, is mandatory for a technical evaluation of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) or other arid zone sites as repositories for high-level or transuranic radioactive wastes. The distribution of calcitic veins filling fractures in alluvium, and of tufa deposits between the Ash Meadows spring discharge area and the Nevada Test Site indicates that discharge from the regional Paleozoic carbonate aquifer during the Late( ) Pleistocene pluvial periods may have occurred at an altitude about 50 meters higher than at present and 14 kilometers northeast of Ash Meadows. Use of the underflow equation (relating discharge to transmissivity, aquifer width, and hydraulic gradient), and various assumptions regarding pluvial recharge, transmissivity, and altitude of groundwater base level, suggest possible rises in potentiometric level in the carbonate aquifer of about -90 meters beneath central Frenchman Flat. During Wisconsin time the rise probably did not exceed 30 meters. Water-level rises beneath Frenchman Flat during future pluvials are unlikely to exceed 30 meters and might even be 10 meters lower than modern levels. Neither the cited rise in potentiometric level in the regional carbonate aquifer, nor the shortened flow path during the Late( ) Pleistocene preclude utilization of the NTS as a repository for high-level or transuranic-element radioactive wastes provided other requisite conditions are met as this site. Deep water tables, attendant thick (up to several hundred meter) unsaturated zones, and long groundwater flow paths characterized the region during the Wisconsin Stage and probably throughout the Pleistocene Epoch and are likely to so characterize it during future glacial periods. The purpose of the drill hole was to verify the existence of an intrusive crystalline body in the subsurface and to determine the stratigraphy, structure, and nature of fractures of the cored rocks. Cored samples were obtained for mineral, chemical, and material property analyses.</p>\n<p>Continuous cores were taken from 30.5 m (100ft) to total depth of 771.2 m (2,530.1 ft) of units J and I{?) (Late Mississippian age) of the Eleana Formation. The drill hole penetrated 416.1 m (1 ,365ft) of argillite, and 304.5 m (999ft) of thermally altered argillite of unit J, and 50.6 m (166ft) of marble of unit I(?). No crystalline rocks were intersected by the drill hole.</p>\n<p>Numerous high-angle faults and brecciated zones were intersected by the drill hole. The units cored were intensely fractured with fracture analysis of the core consisting of frequency of fractures, dips of fractures, open and closed (sealed) fractures and types of fracture sealing or coating material. Twenty-four hundred and thirty fractures, representing approximately 30 percent of the fractures present, indicate an average fracture frequency of 13.2 fractures per meter, predominantly high-angle dips with 66 percent of the fractures closed. Fractures in the argillite interval are sealed or coated predominantly with kaolinite, nacrite, and dickite. Calcite, chlorite, and magnetite are present in fractures in the altered argillite interval. Fractures in the marble interval are sealed or coated with calcite, dolomite, and ferruginous clay. The core index indicates that the lower half of the drilled interval is more competent than the upper half.</p>\n<p>Borehole geophysical logs were run by the Birdwell Division of Seismograph Service Corporation for geologic correlations and lithologic characterizations. The logs include: caliper, density, resistivity, spontaneous potential, Vibroseis, 3-D velocity, neutron, and gamma-ray logs. Lithologic boundaries and structures correlate to responses in the logs.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/70159096","usgsCitation":"Maldonado, F., Muller, D.C., and Morrison, J., 1979, Preliminary geologic and geophysical data of the UE25a-3 exploratory drill hole, Nevada Test Site, Nevada, Report: iii, 43 p.; 1 Plate: 18.94 x 34.10 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/70159096.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 43 p.; 1 Plate: 18.94 x 34.10 inches","numberOfPages":"48","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":309924,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70159096.jpg"},{"id":310369,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70159096/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310368,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70159096/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Calico Hills","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.93847656250001,\n              37.01132594307015\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.85107421875,\n              35.36217605914681\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.268798828125,\n              35.44277092585766\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3017578125,\n              37.09023980307208\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.32373046875,\n              37.87485339352928\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.444580078125,\n              38.25543637637947\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.70825195312501,\n              38.736946065676\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.8173828125,\n              38.71980474264239\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.68530273437501,\n              38.38472766885085\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.93847656250001,\n              37.01132594307015\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5620ce8fe4b06217fc478b08","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Maldonado, Florian fmaldona@usgs.gov","contributorId":805,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maldonado","given":"Florian","email":"fmaldona@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":577591,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Muller, D. The slingram data were taken over an alluvial fan and pediments along the eastern flank of Syncline Ridge about 45 km north of Mercury, Nevada, on the Nevada Test Site. The data show that the more conductive argillaceous Eleana Formation varies in depth from 40 to 85 m from west to east along traverse lines. Northeast-trending linear anomalies suggest rather abrupt changes in subsurface geology that may be associated with faults and fractures. The results of the slingram survey will, when interpreted in the light of other geologic and geophysical evidence, assist in understanding the shallow parts of the geologic setting of the Eleana Formation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79277","usgsCitation":"Flanigan, V.J., 1979, A slingram survey on the Nevada Test Site: part of an integrated geologic geophysical study of site evaluation for nuclear waste disposal: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-277, 34 p. :graphs, maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79277.","productDescription":"34 p. :graphs, maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142177,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0277/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36431,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0277/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a63d9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flanigan, Vincent J.","contributorId":37735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flanigan","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158437,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Drill hole UE25a-1 penetrated thick sequences of nonwelded to densely welded ash-flow and bedded tuffs of Tertiary age. Stratigraphic units that were identified from the drill-hole data include the Tiva Canyon and Topopah Spring Members of the Paintbrush Tuff, tuffaceous beds of Calico Hills, and the Prow Pass and Bullfrog Members of the Crater Flat Tuff. \r\n\r\nStructural analysis of the core indicated densely welded zones to be highly fractured. Many fractures show near-vertical inclinations and are commonly coated with secondary silica, manganese and iron oxides, and calcite. Five fault zones were recognized, most of which occurred in the Topopah Spring Member. Shear fractures commonly show oblique-slip movement and some suggest a sizable component of lateral compression. \r\n\r\nGraphic logs are included that show the correlation of lithology, structural properties, and geophysical logs. The Silent Canyon volcanic center is a buried cauldron complex of Miocene age (13-15 m.y.). Black Mountain volcanic center is an elliptical-shaped cauldron complex of late Miocene age. \r\n\r\nThe lavas and tuffs of the two centers comprise a subalkaline-peralkaline association. Rock types range from quartz normative subalkaline trachyte and rhyolite to peralkaline comendite. The Gold Flat Member of the Thirsty Canyon Tuff (Black Mountain) is a pantellerite. \r\n\r\nThe major-element geochemistry of the Black Mountain-Silent Canyon volcanic centers differs in the total range and distribution of Si02, contents, the degree of peralkalinity (molecular Na2O+K2O>Al2O3) and in the values of total iron and alumina through the range of rock types. These differences indicate that the suites were unrelated and evolved from differing magma bodies. \r\n\r\nThe Black Mountain volcanic cycle represents a renewed phase of volcanism following cessation of the Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon volcanic cycles. Consequently, there is a small but numerically incalculable probability of recurrence of Black Mountain-type volcanism within the Nevada Test Site region. Following criteria definition, potential sites will require detailed topographic and geologic studies, subsurface investigations (including geophysical methods, trenching, and perhaps shallow drilling for faults in alluvium), detailed surface hydrologic studies, and possibly subsurface hydrologic studies.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78269","usgsCitation":"Hoover, D.L., Eckel, E.B., and Ohl, J.P., 1978, Potential sites for a spent unreprocessed fuel facility (SURFF), southwestern part of the Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-269, i, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78269.","productDescription":"i, 18 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407416,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0269/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153460,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0269/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Nevada Test Site","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.74072265625,\n              36.68383870263707\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.91949462890624,\n              36.68383870263707\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.91949462890624,\n              37.118716304960124\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.74072265625,\n              37.118716304960124\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.74072265625,\n              36.68383870263707\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db683149","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoover, D. The U.S. Geological Survey-LaCoste and Romberg-1/ borehole gravity meter (McCulloh and others, 1967a; McCulloh and others, 1967b) was used in the logging program. The primary objective of this work was to obtain data for the determination of accurate in situ formation densities utilizing an instrument not significantly affected by casing, borehole rugosity, or other near-borehole conditions.</p><p>This report provides a brief summary of the geology of the rock formations penetrated by drill holes Ue 19z, PH-1, and water well 5a, and tabulates the subsurface gravity data obtained in these, wells. Reduced sections of the gamma-ray logs run in PM-1 and 5a are also included.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78983","usgsCitation":"Kososki, B.A., The work was done in cooperation with the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The U.S. Geological Survey-LaCoste and Romberg borehole gravity meter was used in the logging program (McCulloh and others, 1967a; McCulloh and others, 1967b). The primary objective of this work was to obtain data for the determination of in situ formation densities utilizing an instrument not significantly affected by casing, borehole rugosity, or other near-borehole conditions. A secondary objective was to obtain duplicate data, by reoccupying subsurface stations, so that the precision and repeatability of borehole gravity data could be studied.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78212","usgsCitation":"Schmoker, J.W., and Kososki, B.A., 1978, Principal facts for borehole gravity stations in test wells Ue10j, Ue7ns, and Ue5n, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-212, 5 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78212.","productDescription":"5 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143229,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0212/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":427060,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0212/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","county":"Nye County","otherGeospatial":"Nevada Test Site","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.5903488653283,\n              37.21594684832604\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.5903488653283,\n              36.548092129587374\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.7663742202405,\n              36.548092129587374\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.7663742202405,\n              37.21594684832604\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.5903488653283,\n              37.21594684832604\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa9e4b07f02db6681a9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schmoker, James W.","contributorId":52171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmoker","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162399,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kososki, Bruce A.","contributorId":70416,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kososki","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162400,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A model is proposed in which uranium mobility is controlled by two competing processes. Uranium is liberated from the volcanic rocks through dissolution of the glassy constituents and is carried in solution as a uranyl carbonate complex. Uranium is subsequently removed from solution by adsorption on secondary oxides of iron, titanium, and manganese, as observed in fission-track maps of aquifer rocks. The model explains the poor correlation of dissolved uranium with depth within tuffaceous sequences in which percolation of ground water is predominantly downward. Good positive correlation of dissolved uranium with dissolved Na, total dissolved solids, and total carbonate supports the glass dissolution model, while inverse correlation of dissolved uranium with U<sup>234</sup>/U<sup>238</sup> ratios of waters implies uranium is being absorbed by a relatively insoluble, surficial phase. Alpha radioactivity of Test Site water is primarily caused by high U<sup>234</sup> contents, and beta activity is highly correlated with dissolved K (K<sup>40</sup>). Small amounts of dissolved radium, Pb<sup>210</sup>, and Po<sup>210</sup> are present but no evidence was found for alpha activity sources related to nuclear testing (Pu, U<sup>235</sup> ). The craters have characteristics suitable for reconnaissance-type field investigations. The Schooner test produced a crater about 300 m across and excavated more than 72 m of stratigraphic section deposited in a fairly regular fashion so that systematic observations yield systematic results. Other features common on the Moon, such as secondary craters and glass-coated rocks, are present at Schooner crater. Smaller explosive tests on Buckboard Mesa excavated rocks from three horizontal alteration zones within basalt flows so that the original sequence of the zones could be determined. One crater illustrated the characteristics of craters formed across vertical boundaries between rock units. The Paleozoic rocks consist of a lower carbonate sequence, argillite of the Eleana Formation, and an upper carbonate sequence. The distribution of these rocks suggests that both top and bottom of the Eleana are structural contacts, probably thrusts or reverse faults. The overlying tuff includes several units recognized in the subsurface, such as the Fraction Tuff and tuff of Redrock Valley. Other units recognized include bedded tuff associated with the Grouse Canyon Member of Belted Range Tuff, and the Rainier Mesa and Ammonia Tanks Members of the Timber Mountain Tuff. The Timber Mountain and Grouse Canyon are extensively altered to montmorillonite (a swelling clay), possibly as a result of ponding of alkaline water. The overlying alluvium locally contains at the base a clayey, tuffaceous sandstone.\r\n\r\nGeophysical logs were used as an aid in locating geologic contacts and determining in situ physical properties. Graphic logs are presented that show the correlation of lithology and geophysical logs. Many of the rock units have characteristic log responses, but alteration within rock units affects the logs strikingly in some drill holes. The most significant surface effect of the experiment was the formation of a 4-foot fault scarp northwest of the site.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr75410","usgsCitation":"Carr, W.J., Miller, C., and Dodge, H., 1975, Geology, physical properties, and surface effects at Discus Thrower Site, Yucca Flat, Nevada test site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-410, ii, 27 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75410.","productDescription":"ii, 27 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151260,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":47764,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47765,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47766,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47767,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47768,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47769,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47763,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0410/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c605","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carr, Wilfred James","contributorId":12033,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carr","given":"Wilfred","email":"","middleInitial":"James","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179084,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Miller, C.H.","contributorId":19148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"C.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179085,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dodge, Harry W.","contributorId":27876,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dodge","given":"Harry W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179086,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This model proposes that the NTS is undergoing extension in a N. 50 ? W.-S. 50 ? E. direction coincident with the minimum principal stress direction. The model is supported by (1) a tectonic similarity between a belt of NTS Quaternary faulting and part of the Nevada-California seismic belt, for which northwest-southeast extension has been suggested; (2) historic northeast- trending natural- and explosion-produced fractures in the NTS; (3) the virtual absence in the NTS of northwest-trending Quaternary faults; (4) the character of north-trending faults and basin configuration in the Yucca Flat area, which suggest a component of right-lateral displacement and post-10 m.y. (million year) oblique separation of the sides of the north-trending depression; (5) seismic evidence suggesting a north- to northwest-trending tension axis; (6) strain measurements, which indicate episodes of northwest-southeast extension within a net northeast-southwest compression; (7) a stress estimate based on tectonic cracking that indicates near-surface northwest-southeast-directed tension, and two stress measurements indicating an excess (tectonic) maximum principal compressive stress in a northeast-southwest direction at depths of about 1,000 feet (305 m); and (8) enlargement of some drill holes in Yucca Flat in a northwest-southeast direction. \r\n\r\nIt is inferred that the stress episode resulting in the formation of deep alluvium-filled trenches began somewhere between 10 and possibly less than 4 m.y. ago in the NTS and is currently active. In the Walker Lane of western Nevada, crystallization of plutons associated with Miocene volcanism may have increased the competency and thickness of the crust and its ability to propagate stress, thereby modulating the frequency (spacing) of basin-range faults.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr74176","usgsCitation":"Carr, W.J., 1974, Summary of tectonic and structural evidence for stress orientation at the Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-176, iv, 53 leaves, 2 sheets :ill., maps (some folded) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74176.","productDescription":"iv, 53 leaves, 2 sheets :ill., maps (some folded) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146966,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0176/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41355,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0176/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41356,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0176/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41357,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0176/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db6984ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carr, Wilfred James","contributorId":12033,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carr","given":"Wilfred","email":"","middleInitial":"James","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166957,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the year following the detonation, this deformation reversed such that the final configuration represented a small east-west contraction from the pre-HANDLEY state. In the subsequent 2-year period, only minor deformation was detected. Thus, the overall response of Pahute Mesa may be described as stable.
