The type of process and displacement rates are largely dependent on underlying bedrock type and precipitation input. Progressive creep with rates ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 mm/a dominates on slopes west of the Grogen fault underlain by sheared and foliated schists. Movement appears to respond primarily to annual increments of precipitation. Complex earthflows occur predominantly on slopes east of the Grogen fault underlain by sheared graywacke and mudstone. Movement rates range from 3.0 to 131.0 mm/a and characteristically display dominant rainy season movement.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nOpen-File Services Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr83259","usgsCitation":"Swanston, D.N., Ziemer, R.R., and Janda, R.J., 1983, Influence of climate on progressive hillslope failure in Redwood Creek Valley, northwestern California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-259, 49 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83259.","productDescription":"49 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154078,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0259/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50673,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0259/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee7bd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Swanston, Douglas N.","contributorId":81930,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swanston","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183805,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ziemer, Robert Ruhl","contributorId":9290,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ziemer","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"Ruhl","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183803,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Janda, Richard J.","contributorId":13235,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Janda","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The program incorporates an efficient algorithm devised by Parker (1912) which uses the fast Fourier transform to calculate potential field anomalies. Input is a rectangular grid in a projected coordinate system which contains values describing topography (elevations and depths in meters) or surface load (mass in g/cm2). Output is a rectangular grid of values of the gravitational attraction of the root in milligals (mGal). A strategy is outlined for combining this output with published results describing the attraction of the root beyond 166.7 km, for upward continuing the total attraction to appropriate observation elevations, and for subtracting the result from Bouguer gravity data to produce an isostatic residual gravity map. This program can also be used to make complete Bouguer corrections to marine gravity data given appropriate bathymetric data sets.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83883","usgsCitation":"Simpson, R., Jachens, R., and Blakely, R., 1983, AIRYROOT; a Fortran program for calculating the gravitational attraction of an Airy isostatic root out to 166.7 km: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-883, 66 leaves :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83883.","productDescription":"Report: 66 p.; Companion files","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":502270,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0883/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":289873,"rank":1,"type":{"id":7,"text":"Companion Files"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0883/application.gz"},{"id":289874,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0883/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4a9a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Simpson, R.W.","contributorId":76738,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Simpson","given":"R.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183502,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jachens, R.C.","contributorId":55433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jachens","given":"R.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183500,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Blakely, R.J. 0000-0003-1701-5236","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1701-5236","contributorId":70755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blakely","given":"R.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183501,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The temperature survey showed the effects of heating at shallow depths due to rising geothermal fluids near the known hot spring areas. Lower temperatures were noted in areas of probable near-surface ground-water movement. The thermal-scanner survey verified the known geothermal areas and showed relatively high-temperature areas of standing water and ground-water discharge. The upland areas of the desert were found to be distinctly warmer than the playa area, probably due to low thermal diffusivity resulting from low moisture content. The surface geophysical surveys indicated that the maximum thickness of valley-fill deposits in the desert is about 3,200 meters. Gravity data further showed that changes in the trend of the desert axis occurred near thermal areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81918","usgsCitation":"Schaefer, D.H., Welch, A., and Mauzer, D.K., 1983, Geothermal resources of the western arm of the Black Rock Desert, northwestern Nevada: Part I, geology and geophysics: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-918, Report: v, 37 p.; 4 Plates: 21.24 × 35.96 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81918.","productDescription":"Report: v, 37 p.; 4 Plates: 21.24 × 35.96 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144063,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0918/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38767,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0918/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38768,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0918/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38769,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0918/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38770,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0918/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38771,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0918/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":408004,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_12207.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Black Rock Desert","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.542,\n              40.584\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.825,\n              40.584\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.825,\n              41.521\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.542,\n              41.521\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.542,\n              40.584\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67ad41","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schaefer, Donald H.","contributorId":77507,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schaefer","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Welch, Alan H.","contributorId":45286,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Welch","given":"Alan H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mauzer, Douglas K.","contributorId":44922,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mauzer","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

On the basis of gravity measurements at 300 stations on nine east-west profiles, the gravity residuals reach a maximum of 30 milligals near the south-central part of the valley. Results from a three-dimensional inversion model indicate that the central depression of the valley is offset to the west of the geographic axis. This offset is probably due to major faulting along the west side of the valley adjacent to the Stillwater Range. Comparison of depths to bedrock obtained during this study and depths obtained from a previous seismic-refraction study indicates a reasonably good correlation. A heterogeneous distribution of densities within the valley-fill deposits would account for differing depths determined by the two methods. Drill hole data provided by the Arkansas Geological Commission is used in the synthesis and interpretation. Areas containing lignite of potential resource value are also delineated. \r\n\r\nTo illustrate the regional stratigraphic framework of Crowleys Ridge, a cross section was constructed from logs of selected oil and gas test wells, along or adjacent to the north-south trending ridge over a distance of about 115 miles. This section reveals that lignite-bearing Tertiary formations dip gently southward along the ridge. The Paleocene-Eocene Wilcox Group forms the bedrock in the northern part of the ridge and successively younger bedrock of the Eocene Claiborne and Jackson Groups is identified in the central and southern part of the ridge. Crowleys Ridge is mantled with alluvium and loess of Quaternary age, and sand and gravel beds of the Lafayette Formation of Pliocene (?) age that unconformably overlie the Paleocene and Eocene rocks. The thickness of lignite-bearing sedimentary deposits ranges from 830 feet in the north to 2,480 feet in the south. The Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson Groups of Paleocene and Eocene age are believed to be fluvial-deltaic in origin. \r\n\r\nThe detailed vertical and horizontal stratigraphic characteristics and distribution of lignite beds in the sediments were determined by constructing seven cross sections from lithologic and geophysical logs of the lignite investigations on Crowleys Ridge by the Arkansas Geological Commission and private companies. Correlation and interpretation of the lignite-bearing strata reveal ten lignite beds of resource potential. These lignite beds range from a few inches to 9.5 ft in thickness and are assigned to stratigraphic intervals that are designated as zone 1 through 7. Zone 1 is near the middle of the Wilcox Group and zone 7 is near the middle of the overlying Claiborne Group. Some of these lignite beds are correlated over distances as much as 30 miles. Other lignite beds thin to a few inches thick and disappear within short distances. Four areas are delineated on Crowleys Ridge that contain one or more lignite beds each 2.5 feet or more thick. Strippable lignite is limited to 300 feet in this area, therefore, all holes were drilled to 300 feet or less. \r\n\r\nChemical analyses of eight lignite samples from Crowleys Ridge are on record with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Resources Data System. Two of the samples are from the Wilcox Group, and six are from the Claiborne Group, but the lignite beds from which the samples were taken are unidentified. However, the analyses are believed to be representative of the lignite within the lignite-bearing sequence. The two Wilcox samples had moisture values of 36.3 and 40.1 percent; ash, 30.5 and 20.5 percent (U.S. Bureau of Mines); sulfur content, 0.3 and 1.0 percent; and Btu values, 3,910 and 4,590 on an as received basis. The six Claiborne samples had moisture values ranging from 34.7 to 43.7 percent; ash from 11.9-28.2 percent (USBM); sulfur content, 0.3-3 percent; and Btu values, 3,400 to 5,160. \r\n\r\nU.S. Geological Survey average ash content for the eight samples was 36.22 percent, and the major oxides are SiO2 (60.75 percent), Al2O3 (15.23 percent), CaO (6.96 percent), Fe2O3 (6.65 percent), and SO3 (5.64 percent). No anomalous values were recorded for the trace element content. \r\n\r\nLignite is not currently mined on Crowleys Ridge. It has potential for use as a fuel for direct firing of boilers to generate electricity. It also has potential for gasification to produce pipeline gas, and for liquefaction to produce fuel oil. More drilling and analyses are needed to better define the quantity and quality of lignite beds within the four significant areas with resource potential and to determine the extent of lignite beds 2.5 ft or more thick that occur in several isolated areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83609","usgsCitation":"Meissner, C., 1983, Stratigraphic framework and distribution of lignite on Crowleys Ridge, Arkansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-609, 33 p., 9 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83609.","productDescription":"33 p., 9 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144091,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38149,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38150,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38151,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38152,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38153,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38154,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38155,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38156,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38157,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38158,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0609/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6af76b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meissner, Charles R.","contributorId":27863,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meissner","given":"Charles R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Potentiometric-surface maps, one of the major sources of historic data, are scattered within the literature or are available only through the publisher or sponsoring agency. This report presents a comprehensive list of available water-table and potentiometric-surface maps from the 19th century through 1979 with the scale, years represented, and area depicted; complete bibliographic citations are included to facilitate retrieval. The bibliography is preceded by a summary of the hydrologic system and a short history of ground-water development on Long Island, with emphasis on the effects of urbanization as reflected in ground-water levels. A series of six water-table maps from before 1900 through 1979 is presented to illustrate the major historic ground-water trends. Selenium and molybdenum are sporadically enriched in the deposits and calcium, manganese, strontium, and yttrium are depleted. Unlike the primary deposits of the San Juan Basin, the deposits in the northeast part of the Church Rock area contain little organic carbon and several elements that are characteristically enriched in the primary deposits are not enriched or are enriched to a much lesser degree in the Church Rock deposits. The suite of elements associated with the deposits in the northeast part of the Church Rock area is also different from the suite of elements associated with the redistributed deposits in the Ambrosia Lake district. This suggests that the genesis of the Church Rock deposits is different, at least in part, from the genesis of the primary deposits of the San Juan Basin or the redistributed deposits at Ambrosia Lake.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83379","usgsCitation":"Spirakis, C., Pierson, C.T., Santos, E., and Fishman, N., 1983, Statistical treatment and preliminary interpretation of chemical data from a uranium deposit in the northeast part of the Church Rock area, Gallup mining district, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-379, i, 44 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83379.","productDescription":"i, 44 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150871,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0379/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46935,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0379/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dce4b07f02db5e131b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spirakis, C.S.","contributorId":46088,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spirakis","given":"C.S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":177538,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pierson, C. This report is designed to be useful to mine owners, operators, regulatory authorities, citizens groups, and others by presenting information on existing hydrologic conditions and by identifying additional sources of hydrologic information. General hydrologic information is presented in a brief text accompanied by a map, chart, graph, or other illustration for each of a series of water-resourcesrelated topics. The summation of the topical discussions provides a description of the hydrology of the area. The Eastern Coal Province has been divided into 24 hydrologic study areas which are shown on the cover of this report. The divisions are based on hydrologic factors, location, and size. Hydrologic units (surface drainage basins) or parts of units are combined to form each study area. Study Area 2 covers northwestern Pennsylvania and a small part of southwestern New York. Most exposed bedrock is of Pennsylvanian, Mi;;sissippian, or Devonian ages. Glacial drift covers most of the bedrock in the northwestern part of the area. During 1979, more than 7 million tons of bituminous coal was produced from about 230 mines in Area 2 counties. Over 99 percent of the area's coal production is from surface mining. Streamflow data are available for 18 continuousrecord stations; 1 crest-stage, partial-record station; 1 low-flow, partial-record station; and 65 miscellaneous sites. Water-quality data are available for 78 locations. Streams having the highest median specific conductance, highest median dissolved-solids concentrations, lowest median pH, highest median total-iron concentration, highest median total-manganese concentration, and highest dissolved-sulfate concentrations were found in Clarion County, the leading coal-producing county in the area. Statistics on low flow, mean flow, peak flow, and flow duration for gaging stations can be computed from recorded mean daily flows. Similar statistics can be estimated for ungaged streams by regression and graphical techniques. Five ground-water observation wells are being operated in Area 2. Ground-water levels fluctuate seasonally. Depth to water increases with well depth in upland areas and decreases with well depth in valleys. Well yields in the area range from less than 1 to more than 2,000 gallons per minute. Wells in unconsolidated materials usually have higher yields. Ground-water quality is adequate for most domestic purposes, except locally. Additional water-data information are available through: (1) The National Water Data Exchange, (2) The National Water Data Storage and Retrieva</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82647","usgsCitation":"Herb, W., Brown, D., Shaw, L.C., Stoner, J., and Felbinger, J., 1983, Hydrology of area 2, Eastern Coal Province, Pennsylvania and New York: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-647, vi, 159 p. :ill. This volume briefly summarizes a final report to the BLM on the results of U.S. Geological Survey investigations stemming from data acquired during 1978 and 1979. The parent final report contains complete accounts of those investigations. The subjects of the studies range from the geologic effects of water currents and their capabilities of erosion and transportation, to delineation of potentially hazardous geologic characteristics of the area. Nine specific studies address the complexities of water currents, the nature of materials suspended in the sea waters, rates of mixing-in of material deposited on the bottom, and the sites of probable deposition of such materials, as well as sites and mechanisms of possible submarine landsliding or unstable bottom (engineering characteristics) of the Continental Slope and shelf.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83353","usgsCitation":"Robb, J.M., 1983, Summary of environmental geologic studies in the Mid-Atlantic outer continental shelf area; results of 1978-1979 field seasons: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-353, 40 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83353.","productDescription":"40 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143688,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0353/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38651,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0353/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69931e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robb, James M.","contributorId":60225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robb","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162115,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
