Analysis of the field situation at specific problem sites quickly suggested that conventional stream gaging techniques should be supplanted by new instruments, designed to measure key hydraulic data at the nearest stream control structures. The key data were found universally to include some combination of a length measurement to specify the vertical height of a gate opening in a dam; measurement of pressure head differential in a turbine; a count of lockages; and precise measurement of time, to give one master reference scale to which all measurements could be keyed. The instruments designed to collect such key data are the shaft position digitizer, the shaft output follower, the STACOM manometer, the lock pressure switch, and the digital data collection console. Although their design was prompted by the need to collect data at river control structures their potential for field use is not that restrictive. Several of these instruments have already found widespread use in the hydrologic data collection program at large. In the 12-1/2 yr period from June 1968 to December 1980 nineteen different river control structures were instrumented. The general experience to date has been a marked improvement in completeness of record, with the average performance somewhere in the 80 percentile range. Performance percentiles at individual sites have ranged from the mid 90 's to about 70. Maintenance records show the instruments to be virtually trouble free, except for the unpredictable acts of nature and man. The stable dunes are large and support a sparse semidesert vegetation. Active dunes are small and commonly confined to the crests of stable dunes; they comprise less than 5 percent of the dunes in the sand seas. Both the stability of the major dune systems and the small percentage of active dunes in the modern environment indicate a significant decrease in the average velocity and frequency of sand-moving winds since the time of stable-dune deposition. Comparison of modern wind directions with dune trends indicates that southwesterly winds responsible for dune formation in the southern and western An Nafud sand sea and in Nafud Urayq are no longer prevailing winds. \r\n\r\nLake deposits are locally interbedded with deposits of eolian sand and in the lee of stable dunes. Radiocarbon dating of calcareous lake deposits defines at least two episodes of moisture-effective climate and minimal eolianactivity: between about 32,000 and 24,000 B.P., just before the onset of the last worldwide glacial stade of the Pleistocene, and during the Holocene between about 8,500 and 5,000 B.P. One lake deposit is more than 38,000 years old and may have been deposited during an earlier pluvial episode about 85,000 to 70,000 B.P. Pollen extracted from these lake deposits indicates that vegetation during late Pleistocene and Holocene pluvial episodes was similar to the present semidesert vegetation; however, the density of shrubs and grasses on the dunes was greater. \r\n\r\nThe main dune systems overlie the 32,000 to 24,000-yearold lake deposits, whereas the Holocene lakebeds are found in modern interdunal environments, usually at the base of stable dunes. The main dune systems probably formed between 24,000 and 8,500 B.P., during the last episode of worldwide cold temperatures. Increased windiness at this time is also recorded in the world's oceans and in both polar ice caps.\r\n\r\nEolian sand below the older lake deposits was deposited before 32,000 B.P., and circumstantial evidence indicates that the sand seas may have begun to form as early as late Miocene. In the An Nafud, remnants of a middle Tertiary(?) surface suggest that the original sediment source for the An Nafud may have been the weathered sandstones that underlie this surface. \r\n\r\nAfter lacustrine deposition ceased in middle Holocene time, eolian activity increased slightly. Deflation on windward dune slopes has produced deflation scoops, which look like inverted deltas. A large cone of depression with a maximum depth of 200 feet below NGVD of 1929 was identified near Kingsville. This cone of depression affects most of Kleburg County and parts of other counties.</p>\n<p>Specific conductance, indicating the salinity of collected water samples, ranged from 940 micromhos per centimeter to 6,900 micromhos per centimeter. High values of specific conductance may be due to failure of well casings. The area is underlain by two lithologically distinct, Precambrian volcanosedimentary units and a wide range of dioritoid and granitoid plutonic intrusive rocks. The only Phanerozoic rocks consist of one outcrop of Tertiary(?) basalt and widespread but thin deposits of Quaternary detritus. \r\n\r\nThe Banana greenstone, the oldest rock in the quadrangle, consists of intermediate volcanic and subvolcanic rocks and minor interbedded marble, which have been metamorphosed to greenschist-facies assemblages. Volcanic rocks mainly range in composition from basalt to andesite, and subvolcanic rocks consist of diorite and diabase. \r\n\r\nThe Banana greenstone is unconformably overlain by silicic volcanic rocks and minor arkosic sandstone and breccia of the Hadn formation. Preservation of delicate volcanic textures suggests that the rocks have been only incipiently metamorphosed. Unpublished rubidium/strontium isotopic data for the Hadn formation suggest an age of 620 to 610 Ma. \r\n\r\nIntrusive rocks are separable according to their ages relative to the Hadn formation. Those that are unconformably overlain by the Hadn formation consist of hornblende quartz diorite and gabbro, which may be consanguineous with the Banana greenstone, and younger tonalite, biotite-hornblende granodiorite, syenogranite, and monzogranite. Plutons of monzogranite, alkali-feldspar g,ranite, syenbgranite, peralkaline granite, and hypabyssal intrusions of granophyre were probably emplaced during a period coincident with and (or) following Hadn volcanism. Uranium-lead and rubidium/strontium isotopic data for two plutons in the adjacent Al Qasr quadrangle suggest that plutonic activity persisted in the region until about 580 to 570 Ma. \r\n\r\nFaulting appears to postdate all of the plutonic rocks. The dominant faults belong to a northeast-trending system of right-lateral shears; a subordinant system consists of mainly north- to northwest-trending faults.\r\n\r\nThe peralkaline-granite plutons underlying Jibal Ba'gham and Jibal ar Rumman have the most economic potential. Wadi samples from these areas show an anomalous concentrations of tin, lead, niobium, and yttrium. The data collection was part of a study to determine the effectiveness of agricultural best-management practices designed to improve rural water quality. The study is part of a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration project undertaken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Continuous streamflow data were collected at three gaging stations during March through September 1982. Suspended-sediment samples were collected at two of the gaging stations. Samples were collected manually at weekly intervals. During periods of rapidly changing stage, samples were collected at 30-minute to 12-hour intervals by stage-activated automatic samplers. The samples were analyzed for suspendedsediment concentration and particle-size distribution. Particlesize distributions were also determined for one set of bedmaterial samples collected at each sediment-sampling site. The streamflow and suspended-sediment-concentration data were used to compute records of mean-daily flow, mean-daily suspended-sediment concentration, and daily suspended-sediment discharge. This paper concludes that two and perhaps three of them separated structures that were active in Devonian time. \r\n\r\nAlong strike over about 200 km of the Front, J. M. Dennison and coworkers recognized and mapped numerous, mostly thin, shale, siltstone, sandstone, and limestone units in 18 measured sections between the Early Devonian Oriskany Sandstone and the Late Devonian Hampshire Formation. Many of these units terminate in intervals between measured sections. Nonparametric statistical analysis reveals that significant numbers of stratigraphic terminations occur in and between intervals in which three of the five lineaments intersect the Front. \r\n\r\nThe Petersburg and Fairmont-Rowlesburg and perhaps the Bartow lineaments were loci of structural control over topography, bathymetry, or both, and of structural influence on patterns of influx and dispersal of clastic sediment. It is not clear whether this pre-Alleghany activity reflects intermittent motion (1) on a strike-transverse basement fault, as occurred under similar lineaments in Pennsylvania and Alabama, or (2) between Paleozoic thrust masses advancing somewhat independently of each other. However, if the Petersburg lineament formed over a basement fault, it cannot still overlie it because the rocks containing the lineament have been detached and transported too far to the northwest.
