Within that area, 240 hydrographic areas occupy structural depressions formed primarily by basin-and-range faulting. The principal aquifers are in basin- fill deposits; however, permeable carbonate rocks underlie valleys in much of eastern Nevada and western Utah and are significant regional aquifers. Anticipated future water needs require a better understanding of the resource so that wise management will be possible. In October 1980, the U.S Geological Survey started a 4-year study to (1) describe the ground-water systems as they existed under natural conditions and as they exist today, (2) analyze the changes that have led to the systems' present condition, (3) tie the results of this and previous studies together in a regional analysis, and (4) provide means by which effects of future ground-water development can be estimated.</p><p>A plan of work is presented that describes the general approach to be taken in this study. It defines (1) the major task necessary to meet objectives and (2) constraints on the scope of work. The approach has been strongly influenced by the diverse nature of ground-water flow systems and the large number of basins. A detailed appraisal of 240 individual areas would require more resources than are available. Consequently, the general approach is to study selected \"typical\" areas and key hydrologic processes. Effort during the first 3 years will be directed toward describing the regional hydrology, conducting detailed studies of \"type\" areas, and studying selected hydrologic processes. Effort during the final year will be directed toward developing a regional analyses of results.</p><p>Special studies that will address hydrologic processes, key components of the ground-water system, and improved use of technology include evaluations of regional geochemistry, regional hydrogeology, recharge, ground-water discharge, and the use of remote sensing. Sieved bulk-sediment fractions and pan concentrates were created from the original samples collected from wadis in the two quadrangles. A semiquantitative 30-element spectrographic analysis was completed on both the sieved bulk-sediment fraction and the pan concentrate of each sample. The results were statistically analyzed in an attempt to identify anomalous regions. Anomaly threshold values were calculated for most elements; the threshold value of an element in a data set is defined as the geometric mean value plus two standard deviations. \r\n\r\nThe Bald al Jimalah West tin-tungsten deposit (MODS 02661) in the southern part of the Al Jurdhawiyah quadrangle was identified by one pan-concentrate sample containing anomalous concentrations of tin and tungsten. Samples near the Bald al Jimalah East ancient lead-zinc-silver mines (MODS 00960) contain strongly anomalous concentrations of tin and lead and to a lesser extent of tungsten and copper. Both of these regions and other regions containing anomalous concentrations of certain elements are recommended for additional studies. These lineaments and fracture traces may indicate that solution enlarged vertical fractures in the limestone and dolonite aquifers underlie most of the county. The use of lineament and fracture-trace maps in selecting bedrock-drilling sites results in a significant increase in the number of usable sites. Bedrock wells drilled on or near mapped lineaments and fracture traces have a higher average yield than veils drilled into interfracture areas. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Parts of Decatur County and several adjacent counties are economically restricted by inadequate water supplies. The Greensburg Municipal Water Works, supplying 35 percent of the county's population, obtains 25 percent of its water from six wells in Greensburg. The remaining 75 percent is pumped from the Flat Rock River. This water is piped 8.25 miles and lifted 183 feet to the treatment station. Although the Flatrock River has adequate flow to supply Greensburg's water needs, a ground-water supply can probably be developed nearer the treatment plant.</p>\n<p>Pleistocene till covers most of the nearly horizontal bedrock. Although averaging about 50 feet thick, this unconsolidated unit does not seem to inhibit the mapping of lineaments and fracture traces. Bedrock is middle Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, and shale. Two sequences of limestone and dolomite, separated by a thin shale unit, constitute the principal aquifer. The extremely variable well yields from this aquifer indicate that the bedrock permeability is also variable.</p>\n<p>Well placement is important in a fractured bedrock terrane, as fractures are a principal source of water to the well. Flows varied from approximately 31,000 to 72,000 cubic meters per second, and sediment discharge varied from approximately 1,600 to 8,000 kilograms per second.
