Chemical analyses of samples for 19 postorogenic plutons from the southeastern Arabian Shield show that these rocks have average potassium/rubidium ratios (162) and average rubidium/strontium ratios (11.8) characteristic of highly evolved granites. Most of the analyzed samples are peraluminous. Three plutons are physically similar in terms of shape and megascopic textural zonation to peralkaline complexes in the northeastern part of the Shield, but none of the samples from these plutons is peralkaline. However, these plutons do contain the least-evolved samples.

\n

Zinc, yttrium, uranium, thorium, and possibly copper, each occur in anomalously high concentrations in at least one pluton relative to contents typically cited for granite. The average regional concentrations of copper and zinc are anomalously high. These facts suggest at least a moderate potential for mineralization in the southeastern part of the Shield. Good correlations (r of 0.5 to 0.8) between uranium, thorium, yttrium, and rubidium and an excellent correlation (r=0.98) between uranium and radium-equivalent uranium suggest that secondary deposits of these elements are unlikely and that magmatic deposits, especially of a pegmatitic nature, are more likely.

\n

Concentrations of some major elements and several trace elements covary with sample location as measured by latitude and longitude. This fact is interpreted to reflect regional variations in the protolith that have been proposed on the basis of lead isotopic data. The chemical variations suggest a largely oceanic crustal component for granites in the southwestern part of the southeastern Shield and a largely continental crustal component to the northeast.

\n

Further quantitative analysis is recommended to verify and accurately delineate anomalous concentrations of trace elements. Trend surface analysis of all available data for postorogenic granites from the eastern Arabian Shield is suggested as a method for testing regional variations in the protolith that might control locations of highly favorable areas of ore deposition.

Hydrologic data collection and interpretive studies were underway in every State, Puerto Rico, and several U.S. territories with focus on such current concerns as ground-water contamination, floods, impacts of toxic wastes, acid precipitation, and stream quality. During the year, this 50-50 matching program was carried out in working partnership with more than 800 State, regional, and local agencies. Joint funding from all sources totaled approximately $92 million. Details of the program are mutually negotiated at the working level by representatives of the Survey and representatives of the cooperating agencies. The pooling of interests results in a balanced effort that directs combined resources to hydrologic investigations having the most significance to both parties. A few of the highlights for FY 1983, and how the program is developed with other agencies are described. Both lakes are in the Denver metropolitan area and provide a variety of recreational activities, including boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The projected increase of urban development in the drainage basins of Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes could increase the constituent loads delivered to the lakes. Due to the eutrophic condition of Cherry Creek Lake and the potential eutrophic condition of Chatfield Lake, increased constituent loads could affect the suitability of the lakes for recreation. A monitoring program was started to determine the constituent loads of the drainage basins to both lakes. A network of monitoring stations was established to collect ambient water quality samples, storm runoff water quality samples, precipitation, and stream discharge. In the Cherry Creek basin 12 observation wells were established in the alluvium upgradient from Cherry Creek lake. Water levels and water quality data were collected to determine the quantity and quality of groundwater entering Cherry Creek lake. Data were collected from January through December 1982. The data may be used to evaluate the present and projected impact of urbanization in the drainage basins and the effect of increased constituent loads delivered to Chatfield and Cherry Creek lakes. The results from 12 sites (152 samples) within these plutons show two types of remanence behavior that appear fairly consistent with rock composition. The more leucocratic rocks (9 sites) tend to yield single-component magnetizations, of generally lower coercivities and blocking temperatures relative to the other units, that are considered to represent a recent viscous overprint, The mesocratic to melanocratic rocks show both single- and multicomponent magnetizations, the latter giving characteristic directions isolated through remagnetization-plane analysis. Three sites are considered reliable and yield paleomagnetic poles, of inferred Early Devonian age, that may reflect a 30? southward displacement from stable North America. Middle Tertiary rift volcanism in a continental-rift valley in the Arabian-Nubian Shield was the first surface expression of active mantle convection beneath an axis that was to become the Red Sea. Investigation of the coastal plain of southwestern Saudi Arabia suggests that the rift valley was filled with basaltic and felsic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks (Ad Darb and Damad formations), cherty tuffaceous siltstones (Baid formation), and subordinate Nubian-type quartz sandstone (Ayyanah sandstone) between about 30 and 20 Ma ago. These rocks are named herein the Jizan group. At the same time, alkali-olivine basalt was erupted on the stable Precambrian craton at locations 100 to 200 km east of the rift valley axis.

First-stage spreading of the Red Sea began about 20 Ma ago when diabasic dikes and gabbro and granophyre plutons (Tihamat Asir complex) of oceanic-tholeiitic parentage were intruded into the continental-rift deposits. The new oceanic crust was injected into a region of thinned continental crust. Because of thinning, the continental crust was extended and became fractured into a series of fault blocks. Crustal extension in the attenuated zone was accompanied by mafic and silicic volcanism producing a continental rift-valley tectonic environment. Fault blocks of the rift valley were initially rotated toward the Red Sea during the first-stage spreading episode. Inland from the continental rift, the thick continental crust was distended on long parallel fractures that were intruded by gabbroic to quartz syenitic magma to form continental dikes. This period of continental-margin extension was short lived, lasting perhaps only 1 or 2 Ma. The first-stage sea-floor spreading of the Red Sea continued until about 15 or 14 Ma ago at a half-spreading rate of about 2.2 cm/yr.

Throughout early Tertiary time, the Arabian Shield erosion surface remained near sea level. First-stage uplift of the Red Sea Escarpment began during middle Miocene time, as evidenced by the coarse polymictic boulder conglomerate of the Bathan formation. Second-stage scarp uplift and second-stage sea-floor spreading followed during Pliocene, Pleistocene, and Holocene time.
