Three drill holes placed to test anomalies within these formations yielded negative results. \r\n\r\nStudies of a long, narrow anomaly north of the Rabathan area indicated a similar geological environment. This northern area also contains limited zones that are highly anomalous in copper and zinc and extensive zones that are slightly anomalous in those metals. Drilling was not undertaken in this area. \r\n\r\nThe Bilajimah airborne electromagnetic anomaly west of Wadi Bidah coincides with a broad synclinorium of layered felsic turfs and gossans. Geochemical studies indicated slightly anomalous copper, zinc, and silver values in gossans within the anomaly area. Two drill holes intersected carbonaceous rock that contained approximately 15 percent pyrrhotite and traces of sphalerite and chalcopyrite. \r\n\r\nTwo geophysically anomalous areas west of Wadi Bidah surround ancient mines at Mahawiyah and Khayal al Masna'ah. Results of geochemical sampling at these workings were positive. An airborne electromagnetic anomaly located in the Assifar area in the southwestern corner of the Wadi Bidah district is underlain principally by metasedimentary rocks that include large linear zones of cherty iron-manganese formation and a few gossans .containing secondary base metal minerals.\r\n\r\nDetailed mapping and sampling of the Mulhal ancient mine, located west of Wadi Bidah, revealed two types of polymetallic gossans : (1) stratiform deposits interlayered with ignimbrites and mafic volcanic rocks and (2) barite-bearing gossanous material in shear zones that grade into hydrothermally altered shear zones and extend beyond the mine area. The gossans and gossanous shear zones contain anomalous amounts of gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, barium, and selenium. \r\n\r\nTwo gossans west of Wadi Bidah were mapped and sampled in detail; both gossans are interlayered, with siliceous volcanic rocks. Although the gossan at Jabal Mohr covers a large area, it contains low amounts of precious and base metals. The gossan at Mulhal No. 2 contains moderate to high amounts of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83672","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., Waters, B., Naqvi, M., Worl, R.G., Helaby, A., Flanigan, V.J., Sadek, H., and Samater, R., 1983, Geological and geochemical studies in the Wadi Bidah District, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-672, v, 101 p., 6 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;1983., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83672.","productDescription":"v, 101 p., 6 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;1983.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142103,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34537,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34538,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34532,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34533,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34534,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34535,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34536,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0672/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db6876b4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, C. It is expected that this data base will encourage more thorough scientific analyses of phosphate deposits and assessments of undiscovered phosphate resources, and that methods of data collection and storage will be streamlined. \r\n\r\nBecause the database was intended to serve as a repository for diverse and detailed data, a large amount of the early research effort was devoted to the design and development of the system. To date (1982), the file remains incomplete. All development work and file maintenance work on IPRDB was suspended as of October 1, 1982; this paper is intended to document the steps taken up to that date. Commencing in 1967 and continuing to date (1982), extensive measurements of shear- and compressional-wave velocities have been made in five tunnel complexes in Rainier and Aqueduct Mesas and in one tunnel complex in Shoshone Mountain. The results of these surveys to 1980 are compiled in this report. In addition, extensive horizontal drilling was initiated in 1967 in connection with geologic exploration in these tunnel complexes for sites for nuclear weapons tests. Seismic and electrical surveys were conducted in the majority of these holes. The type and location of these tunnel and borehole surveys are indexed in this report. Synthesis of the seismic refraction data indicates a mean compressional-wave velocity near the nuclear device point (WP) of 23 tunnel events of 2,430 m/s (7,970 f/s) with a range of 1,846-2,753 m/s (6,060-9,030 f/s). The mean shear-wave velocity of 17 tunnel events is 1,276 m/s (4,190 f/s) with a range of 1,140-1,392 m/s (3,740-4,570 f/s). Experience indicates that these velocity variations are due chiefly to the extent of fracturing and (or) the presence of partially saturated rock in the region of the survey.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83399","usgsCitation":"Carroll, R.D., and Kibler, J.E., 1983, Sourcebook of locations of geophysical surveys in tunnels and horizontal holes including results of seismic-refraction surveys, Rainier Mesa, Aqueduct Mesa, and Area 16, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-399, Report: iv, 85 p.; 12 Plates: 24.94 × 9.99 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83399.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 85 p.; 12 Plates: 24.94 × 9.99 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141557,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35830,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35831,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35832,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35833,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35834,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35835,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35836,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35837,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35838,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35839,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35842,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":392065,"rank":16,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14011.htm"},{"id":35840,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35841,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0399/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Aqueduct Mesa, Area 16, Nevada Test Site, Rainier Mesa","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -116.25,\n 37\n ],\n [\n -116,\n 37\n ],\n [\n -116,\n 37.25\n ],\n [\n -116.25,\n 37.25\n ],\n [\n -116.25,\n 37\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e76e6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carroll, R. Ground-water resources are sufficient to supply several times the 1978 population. Potential problems associated with increased ground-water development are saltwater encroachment in the coastal areas and septic-tank contamination of shallow aquifers. There are sufficient good-quality surface-water resources to allow for significant expansion of the tribe)s fisheries activities. \r\n\r\nThe tribal well field is the only place where the ground-water system has been stressed) resulting in declining water levels (1,5 feet per year), The well field has a useful life of at least 1.5-20 years, This can be increased by drilling additional wells to expand the present well field, \r\n\r\nInflow of water to the reservation is in the form of precipitation (103 cubic feet per second) ft3/s)) surface-water inflow (13 ft3/s)) and ground-water inflow (4 ft3/s), Outflow is as evapotranspiration (62 ft3/s)) surface-water outflow (40 ft3/s)) and ground-water outflow (18 ft3/s), Total inflow and outflow are equal (120 ft3/s). \r\n\r\nGround water is generally suitable for domestic use without treatment) but a serious quality problem is the presence of coliform bacteria in some shallow wells, High values of turbidity and color and large concentrations of iron and manganese are common problems regarding the esthetic quality of the water, In a few places, large concentrations of chloride and dissolved solids indicate the possibility of saltwater encroachment, but no ongoing trend has been identified, \r\n\r\nSurface waters have been observed to contain undesirably high concentrations of total phosphorus and total and fecal-coliform bacteria) and to have temperatures too high for fish-rearing. The concentration of nutrients appears to be related to flow conditions. Nitrate and total nitrogen are greater in wet-season runoff than during low-flow periods) and total phosphorus shows an inverse relationship. Rock units which appear on the accompanying map are indicated by an asterisk beside the map symbol in the explanation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83184","usgsCitation":"Ellersieck, I., Curtis, S., Mayfield, C., and Tailleur, I., 1983, Reconnaissance geologic map of the De Long Mountains A2, B2, and part of C2 quadrangles, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-184, Report: 53 p.; 2 Plates: 18.59 x 54.43 inches and 43.84 x 16.65 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83184.","productDescription":"Report: 53 p.; 2 Plates: 18.59 x 54.43 inches and 43.84 x 16.65 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140008,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0184/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":397478,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13927.htm"},{"id":423348,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0184/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":423349,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0184/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":423350,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0184/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"De Long Mountains A2, B2, and part of C2 quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -162.6,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -163.2,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -163.2,\n              68.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -162.6,\n              68.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -162.6,\n              68\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a72e4b07f02db642d7a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellersieck, Inyo","contributorId":34914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellersieck","given":"Inyo","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154419,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Curtis, S.M.","contributorId":16823,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtis","given":"S.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154418,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mayfield, C.F.","contributorId":95467,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mayfield","given":"C.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154421,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Tailleur, I.L.","contributorId":59027,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tailleur","given":"I.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154420,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The trace elements are divided into two groups: (1) compatible lithophile and siderophile elements (strontium, cobalt, scandium, manganese, europium, and titanium) and (2) incompatible lithophile elements (uranium, thorium, tantalum, rubidium, and rare-earth elements, except europium). The compatible elements exhibit greatest concentrations in the metaluminous postorogenic granites, and concentrations decrease with increasing degree of magma evolution. Economic potential for these elements and other geochemically similar elements is considered to be low. The concentrations of the incompatible elements increase with increasing degree of magma evolution and are greatest in the peralkaline and peraluminous granites. There is some geologic evidence that pegmatite and vein-forming processes were operative toward the end stage of postorogenic magmatism in the northeastern Arabian Shield, and therefore there is some probability for economic potential for these elements. It is suggested that such potential is greatest where highly evolved postorogenic granites intruded volatile (generally water )-rich country rocks.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83287","usgsCitation":"Stuckless, J.S., Knight, R.J., VanTrump, G., and Budahn, J., 1983, Trace-element geochemistry of postorogenic granites from the northeastern Arabian Shield, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-287, 37 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83287.","productDescription":"37 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139919,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0287/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35041,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0287/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f6e4b07f02db5f1566","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stuckless, John S. 0000-0002-7536-0444 jstuckless@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7536-0444","contributorId":4974,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stuckless","given":"John","email":"jstuckless@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":156215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Knight, R. The floods resulted from a near-stationary cold front, which moved slowly across Louisiana and Mississippi. Flood heights and discharges of many streams exceeded previously known maximums of record, and for many the recurrence interval of peak discharge exceeded 100 years. On Black Creek, near Brooklyn, Miss., the previous maximum stage (since 1961) was exceeded by 4.26 ft, and the April 7 peak discharge of 42,500 cu ft/sec was about two times the previous maximum discharge. This flood exceeded the 100-yr event. In southeastern Louisiana, the area with the most severe flooding was in the Bogue Chitto basin. At the Franklinton, LA, Station, the April 7 peak discharge of 125,000 cu ft/sec was more than two times the previous maximum discharge. In April 1900 the stage at this site was 29.6 ft, 4.9 ft higher than the April 1981 peak. An extreme event also occurred on the Tchefuncta River near Franklinton, LA. The previous maximum stage (since 1949) was exceeded by 3.75 ft, and the April 6 discharge of 26 ,900 cu ft/sec is more than three times the previous maximum. This discharge also exceeded the 100-yr event. Combined flood damages for both States totaled in the hundred of millions of dollars. At Phoenix, the Salt River was the highest since 1920 but was only slightly higher than the flood in March 1978. The Agua Fria River was the highest since 1919. The floods caused 12 deaths and more than $150 million in damage. Damage of $51.8 million occurred in Maricopa County, Arizona. Ten counties in Arizona and three counties in New Mexico were declared disaster areas. Unusually high volumes of runoff occurred on the Salt, Verde, and Agua Fria Rivers upstream from reservoirs. Overflow from the reservoir systems caused flooding downstream. Storage in the reservoirs on the Salt and Verde River reduced the peak discharge of the Salt River at Phoenix from a potential of about 234,000 cubic feet per second to 126,00 cubic feet per second and greatly reduced the duration of the flood. Six age groups of volcanic centers, eruptive products, and explosion craters are recognized in the region based on their morphology, degree of dissection, stratigraphic relationships, and degree of weathering. These features range in age from tens of thousands of years to events that have occurred this century. No magmatic eruptions have occurred in the Dieng Mountains region for at least several thousand years; volcanic activity during this time interval has consisted of phreatic eruptions and non-explosive hydrothermal activity. If future volcanic events are similar to those of the last few thousand years, they will consist of phreatic eruptions, associated small hot mudflows, emission of suffocating gases, and hydrothermal activity. Future phreatic eruptions may follow, or accompany, periods of increased earthquake activity; the epicenters for the seismicity may suggest where eruptive activity will occur. Under such circumstances, the populace within several kilometers of a potential eruption site should be warned of a possible eruption, given instructions about what to do in the event of an eruption, or temporarily evacuated to a safer location.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8368","usgsCitation":"Miller, C.D., Sushyar, R., Santoso, and Hamidi, S., 1983, Eruptive history of the Dieng Mountains region, central Java, and potential hazards from future eruptions: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-68, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8368.","productDescription":"22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142119,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0068/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34435,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0068/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fde7e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, C. The area varies in altitude from less than 4,000 to more than 10,000 feet, and is comprised chiefly of plateaus, benches, and terraces that are dissected by deep, narrow canyons. Principal streams draining the area are the Virgin, Sevier, Escalante, and Paria Rivers, and Coal, Kanab, and Wahweap Creeks.

Most of the data included in this report were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from October 1980 to September 1982. They were collected as part of a hydrologic study in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to evaluate potential impacts of coal mining on the area's water resources. The results of that study are to be published in a separate report.

Several earlier coal-related hydrologic studies have been made in the Alton and Kolob coal-fields area. Hydrologic data collected during those studies may be found in the following reports: Goode (1964, 1966), Sandberg (1979), and Cordova (1981). Data collected at the streamflow-gaging stations shown on plate 1 are published separately in annual reports of the U.S. Geological Survey.
