The 5 ,900-square-mile area is an asymmetrical structural trough bounded by the Rocky Mountains on the west and the Great Plains on the east. The area is drained by the Huerfano, Apishapa, Purgatoire, and Canadian Rivers (and their tributaries), all tributary to the Arkansas River. The principal coal-bearing formations are the Vermejo Formation of Late Cretaceous age and the Raton Formation of Late Cretaceous and Paleocene age. Much of the coal in the area is of coking quality, important to the metallurgical industry. Topographic relief in the area is greater than 8,700 feet, and this influences the climate which in turn affects the runoff pattern of area streams. Summer thunderstorms often result in flash floods. Virtually all geologic units in the region yield water. Depth to ground water ranges from land surface to 400 feet. Surface and ground water in the area contain mostly bicarbonate and sulfate ions; locally in the ground water, chloride ions predominate. Potential hydrologic problems associated with surface coal mining in the area are water-quality degradation, water-table decline, and increased erosion and sedimentation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr83132","usgsCitation":"Abbott, P., Geldon, A.L., Cain, D., Hall, A.P., and Edelmann, P., 1983, Hydrology of Area 61, Northern Great Plains and Rocky Mountain Coal Provinces, Colorado and New Mexico (WRI/OFR): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-132, vi, 99 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83132.","productDescription":"vi, 99 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":139915,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0132/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34628,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0132/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"edition":"WRI/OFR","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a17e4b07f02db604add","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Abbott, P.O.","contributorId":21154,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abbott","given":"P.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Geldon, Arthur L.","contributorId":16395,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geldon","given":"Arthur","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cain, Doug","contributorId":101655,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cain","given":"Doug","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hall, Alan P.","contributorId":8464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154891,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Edelmann, Patrick","contributorId":86305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edelmann","given":"Patrick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Three stream-gages were identified as having insufficient reason to continue their operation. Operation of these stations were identified as having uses specific only to short-term studies; it is recommended that these stations be discontinued at the end of the data-collection phases of the studies. The remaining 45 stations should be maintained in the program for the foreseeable future. The current policy for operation of the 45-station program would require $180,300 per year. The average standard error of estimation of streamflow record is 18.5 percent. It was shown that this overall level of accuracy at the 45 sites could be maintained with a budget of \\$170,000 if the gaging resources were redistributed among the gages. A minimum budget of \\$155,000 is required to operate the 45-gage program; a budget less than this does not permit proper service and maintenance of the gages and recorders. At the minimum budget, the average standard error is 26.0 percent. The maximum budget analyzed was \\$350,000, which resulted in an average standard error of 9.2 percent. Large parts of Maine 's interior were identified as having sparse stream-flow data. It was recommended that this sparsity should be remedied as funds can be made available. The test hole was drilled in the SW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec. 32, T. 19 N., R. 1 W., Glenn County, California, about one-half mile south of the town of Butte City. Drilled to a depth of 1,432 feet below land surface, the hole is cased to a depth of 82 feet and equipped with three piezometer tubes to depths of 592 feet, 968 feet, and 1,330 feet. A 5-foot well screen is at the bottom of each piezometer. Each screened interval has a cement plug above and below it to isolate it from other parts of the aquifer , and the well bore is filled between the plugs with sediment. Nine cores and 49 sidewall cores were recovered. Laboratory tests were made for mineralogy, hydraulic conductivity, porosity , consolidation, grain-size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction, and chemical quality of water. Geophysical and thermal gradient logs were made. The hole is sampled periodically for chemical analysis and measured for water level in the three tapped zones. It comprises a total of about 400 square miles in Polk, Benton, and Marion Counties. Tertiary consolidated rocks underlie the entire area. These rocks include marine sandstone, siltstone, shale, tuff, basalt, and gabbro. In the lowlands, the consolidated rocks are overlain by unconsolidated deposits of clay, silt, sand, and gravel which reach a maximum thickness of about 125 feet locally. The consolidated rocks generally are poor water-bearing formations and yield only small quantities of ground water to wells. From 1956 to 1976, about 6 percent of all wells completed in basalt and 14 percent of those completed in marine sedimentary rocks were reported to be \"dry holes.\" The median yield of wells completed in the consolidated rocks was less than 10 gallons per minute, and the maximum reported yield was 200 gallons per minute. Shallow ground water in the consolidated rocks is generally of good quality, but with increasing depth in these rocks the water contains increasing concentrations of dissolved minerals. It is estimated that about 5 percent of all the wells completed in the consolidated rocks yield poor-quality water. The best water-bearing units are sand-and-gravel beds in the unconsolidated deposits. Near Independence, the sand-and-gravel beds are hydraulically continuous and exceed a saturated thickness of 10 feet over an area covering several tens of square miles chiefly within the Willamette River flood plain. Properly constructed wells in these deposits can generally obtain yields of 100 to 500 gallons per minute, and large quantities of additional ground water can be developed from this source. Outside the above area, sand-and-gravel beds generally are less than 10 feet thick, lenticular in shape, local in extent, and generally yield less than 30 gallons per minute to wells. Sand-and-gravel beds probably are absent in the Baskett Slough drainage basin, in the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Management area, and in the Luckiamute and Little Luckiamute River valleys upstream from the U.S. Highway 99W bridge.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80678","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Gonthier, J.B., 1983, Groundwater resources of the Dallas-Monmouth area, Polk, Benton, and Marion Counties, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-678, Report: vi, 50 p.; 2 Plates: 23.18 x 34.68 inches and 18.78 x 12.85 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80678.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 50 p.; 2 Plates: 23.18 x 34.68 inches and 18.78 x 12.85 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405072,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11734.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":405018,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":405017,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141630,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":405016,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0678/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Benton County, Marion County, Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Dallas-Monmouth area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.12927246093751,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.12927246093751,\n              44.97451370563983\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.97451370563983\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.35998535156249,\n              44.79937794671695\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a94e4b07f02db6589aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gonthier, Joseph B.","contributorId":74350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonthier","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":159240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Some irrigation water used in this area obtained from surface sources, but a significant amount is obtained from wells. The principal aquifer in the area is the Columbia River Basalt Group. Wells in the basalt are commonly drilled to depths of 500 to 1,200 ft and many produce more than 1,000 gal/min. A cooperative ground-water modeling study by the U.S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department has resulted in the compilation of data from drillers logs and well inspections for wells completed in the basalt aquifer. Water-level measurements have been made in some wells in the area since the 1950's. The wells with longest periods of record are those that are part of a Statewide network of observation wells measured by the U. S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department. This report includes a table of well information, representative hydrographs, and well location maps. In support of these investigations, the thickness of the lava sequence at more than 300 points was estimated by spectral analysis of low-level aeromagnetic profiles utilizing the integral Fourier transform of field intensity along overlapping profile segments. The optimum length of segment for analysis was determined to be about 40 km or 600 field samples. Contributions from two discrete magnetic source ensembles could be resolved on almost all spectra computed. The depths to these ensembles correspond closely to the flight height (300 m), and, presumably, to the mean depth to basement near the center of each profile segment. The latter association was confirmed in all three cases where spectral estimates could be directly compared with basement depths measured in drill holes. \r\n\r\nThe maximum thickness estimated for the lava section is 380 m and the mean about 150 m. Data from an isopach map prepared from these results suggest that thickness variations are strongly influenced by pre-harrat, north-northwest-trending topography probably consequent on Cenozoic faulting. The thickest zones show a rough correlation with three axially-disposed volcanic shields.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83640","usgsCitation":"Blank, H.R., and Sadek, H.S., 1983, Spectral analysis of the 1976 aeromagnetic survey of Harrat Rahat, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-640, 32 p., 2 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83640.","productDescription":"32 p., 2 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140734,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35500,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35501,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35502,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0640/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4c62","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blank, H. The area for possible sales for lease sale number 90, as well as the area for lease sale number 78 and the previous areas leased are shown in figure 1; physiographic features of the region are shown in figure 2. </p><p>Six exploration wells have been drilled within the proposed lease area (figs. 3 and 4), but no commercial discoveries have been made. All six wells were drilled on the Continental Shelf. No commercial production has been obtained onshore in the region. The areas already drilled have thin sedimentary rock sections, and the deeper strata are dominantly of continental facies. Petroleum formation may have been hindered by a lack of organic material and lack of sufficient burial for thermal maturation. However, analyses of drilling and seismic profiling data presented here indicate that a much thicker section of sedimentary rocks containing a much higher proportion of marine deposits, exists seaward of the Continental Shelf. These geologic conditions imply that the basins farther offshore may be more favorable environments for generating petroleum.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83186","usgsCitation":"Dillon, W.P., 1983, Geology report for proposed oil and gas lease sale No. 90; continental margin off the southeastern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-186, Report: 125 p.; 2 Plates: 8.10 x 10.88 inches and 10.80 x 13.29 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83186.","productDescription":"Report: 125 p.; 2 Plates: 8.10 x 10.88 inches and 10.80 x 13.29 inches","costCenters":[{"id":132,"text":"Atlantic Marine Geology","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34584,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0186/plate-2.pdf","text":"Plate 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate 2"},{"id":34583,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0186/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate 1"},{"id":34585,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0186/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":409945,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13929.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":140159,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0186/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.50357992821841,\n              29.56282563875409\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.99516298385373,\n              29.56282563875409\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.99516298385373,\n              34.177210082895485\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.50357992821841,\n              34.177210082895485\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.50357992821841,\n              29.56282563875409\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c6e5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dillon, William P. bdillon@usgs.gov","contributorId":79820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dillon","given":"William","email":"bdillon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":154708,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The line begins in Mesozoic cover rocks near Riyadh on the Arabian Platform, leads southwesterly across three major Precambrian tectonic provinces, traverses Cenozoic rocks of the coastal plain near Jizan (Tihamat-Asir), and terminates at the outer edge of the Farasan Bank in the southern Red Sea. More than 500 surveyed recording sites were occupied, including 19 in the Farasan Islands. Six shot points were used: five on land, with most charges placed below the water table in drill holes, and one at sea, with charges placed on the sea floor and detonated from a ship. Slightly more than 61 metric tons of explosives were used in 19 discrete firings. \r\n\r\nSeismic energy was recorded by 100 newly-developed portable seismic stations deployed in approximately 200 km-long arrays for each firing. Each station consisted of a standard 2-Hz vertical component geophone coupled to a self-contained analog recording instrument equipped with a magnetic-tape cassette.\r\n\r\nIn this final report, we fully document the field and data-processing procedures and present the final seismogram data set as both a digital magnetic tape and as record sections for each shot point. Record sections include a normalized set of seismograms, reduced at 6 km/s, and a true-amplitude set, reduced at 8 km/s, which have been adjusted for amplifier gain, individual shot size, and distance from the shot point.\r\n\r\nAppendices give recorder station and shot information, digital data set descriptions, computer program listings, arrival times used in the interpretation, and a bibliography of reports published as a result of this project.\r\n\r\nWe used two-dimensional ray-tracing techniques in the data analysis, and our interpretation is based primarily on horizontally layered models. The Arabian Shield is composed, to first-order, of two layers, each about 20 km thick, with average velocities of 6.3 km/s and 7.0 km/s, respectively. At the western shield margin the crust thins to less than 20 km total thickness, beyond which the Red Sea shelf and coastal plain are interpreted to be underlain by oceanic crust.\r\n\r\nA major crustal lateral velocity inhomogeneity northeast of Sabhah in the Shammar Tectonic Province is interpreted as the suture zone of two crustal blocks of different composition. Several high-velocity anomalies in the upper crust correlate with mapped gneissic dome structures. Two intra-crustal reflectors at13 km depth are interpreted as the tops of mafic intrusives.\r\n\r\nThe Mohorovicic discontinuity beneath the shield varies from 43 km depth in the northeast with 8.2 km/s mantle velocity to 38 km depth in the southwest with 8.0 km/s mantle velocity. Two velocity discontinuities are identified in the upper mantle, at 59 and 70 km depth.\r\n\r\nWe suggest further work, including refined analyses of the data employing filtering and synthetic seismogram techniques, as well as consideration of attenuation properties. Extension of the seismic refraction profile to the Arabian Gulf and some short profiles perpendicular to the existing profile would be fruitful areas for future field work.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83390","usgsCitation":"Healy, J.H., Mooney, W.D., Blank, H., Gettings, M.E., Kohler, W., Lamson, R., and Leone, L., 1983, Saudi Arabian seismic deep-refraction profiles; final project report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-390, 434 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83390.","productDescription":"434 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140466,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34937,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34938,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34939,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34940,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34941,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34942,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34943,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34944,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34945,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34946,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0390/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdb74","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Healy, J.
