This report describes a plan of study for a water-resource assessment of the Sangamon River basin in central Illinois. The purpose of the study would be to provide information to basin planners and regulators on the quantity, quality, and use of water to guide management decisions regarding basin development. Water quality and quantity problems in the Sangamon River basin are associated primarily with agricultural and urban activities, which have contributed high concentrations of suspended sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter to the streams. The impact has resulted in eutrophic lakes, diminished capacity of lakes to store water, low concentrations of dissolved oxygen, and turbid stream and lake waters. The four elements of the plan of study include: (1) determining suspended sediment and nutrient transport, (2) determining the distribution of selected inorganic and organic residues in streambed sediments, (3) determining the waste-load assimilative capacity of the Sangamon River, and (4) applying a hydraulic model to high streamflows. High aeroradioactivity is associated with potassium-rich granitic plutons, muscovite-rich gneisses, schists, and metavolcanic rocks; positive gravity and magnetic anomalies are associated with gabbro plutons; and negative gravity anomalies are associated with granitic plutons. \r\n\r\nAt the west side of the slate belt, the Tillery phyllite is interpreted as having undergone progressive metamorphism. The underlying Uwharrie Formation extends into the Charlotte belt where it is mapped as metavolcanic rocks. Gravity models of the Carolina slate belt indicate that it is a synform containing a wedge of metasedimentary and volcanoclastic rock on plutonic basement. The basement is exposed in the adjacent Charlotte belt antiform. \r\n\r\nThe northern Charlotte belt contains mainly plutonic rocks which have been divided into 3 supergroups of plutons based upon chemistry, mineralogy, texture, and age. They are: \r\n\r\n1. Old Plutonic supergroup - plutons 545-490 m.y. that are medium to coarse-grained tonalite, quartz diorite, and granodiorites. \r\n\r\n2. Concord-Salisbury supergroup -- plutons 426-350 m.y. which form sheet-like intrusions of differentiated gabbro; local volcanic centers with ring complexes 13 km in diameter that suggest magma chambers 0 - 8 km deep; smaller bodies of diorite, monzonite, and syenite; and small Salisbury type granodiorites. \r\n\r\n3. Landis supergroup -- plutons 350-280 m.y. that are usually very coarse-grained, porphyritic, 'big feldspar,' potassium-rich granites. \r\n\r\nThe Mecklenburg-Weddington gabbro complex of the Concord-Salisbury supergroup, the largest feature in the study area, contains three large gabbro plutons. The gabbro intruded old Plutonic complex rocks and could-have produced the metamorphic reaction K-feldspar + sillimanite quartz + muscovite reflected in the mineral assemblage of adjacent felsic metavolcanic rocks. Gravity models indicate a lopolith 3.5- to 4.5-km thick with a 2 km sill extending to the northeast. Positive magnetic and gravity anomalies suggest the lopolith is. connected with the Concord gabbro complex to the northeast. \r\n\r\nThe sheet-like intrusions of Concord-Salisbury group gabbros, forming the core of the composite 5atholith, have medium-grained Salisbury type granodiorite above, and coarser-grained Landis granite below. The position of the supergroups as presently exposed may be a function of level of erosion versus level of emplacement. The plutons in the composite batholith span 200 m.y. according to current age data and are arranged with the oldest at the top and the youngest at the bottom. However, Rb-Sr and K-At ages in the Piedmont are more likely to reflect age of crustal uplift than the age of metamorphism or intrusion. The Charlotte belt composite batholith, therefore, may very well be the result of a shorter single tectonic event or process.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8393","usgsCitation":"Wilson, F., 1983, Geophysical and geologic studies in southern Mecklenburg County and vicinity, North Carolina and South Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-93, 199 p.  ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8393.","productDescription":"199 p.  ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":39562,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39561,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39563,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39564,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144993,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0093/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina, South Carolina","county":"Mecklenburg County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.19308471679688,\n              34.84762101276787\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.19308471679688,\n              35.74316846139925\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.4144287109375,\n              35.74316846139925\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.4144287109375,\n              34.84762101276787\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.19308471679688,\n              34.84762101276787\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c208","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, Frederick A.","contributorId":100352,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Frederick A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163574,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These samples are from the Stark Shale Member of the Dennis Limestone of Upper Pennsylvanian age, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. The data confirm previous results (Hosterman and Whitlow, 1981) which showed that a limited relationship of color value to organic carbon exists for shales containing about 7 percent or less organic carbon. For samples with 7 percent or more organic carbon, color values are nearly all the same. Sand-wave amplitudes in the survey area ranged from 1-11 m although most were 5-7 m. Wavelengths were not constant as the crests were sinuous and in places, even bifurcated. The sand waves are asymmetrical with their steepest sides facing northwest; however, gradients of their steep sides mostly are 4?-10? which is well below the angle of repose for sand in water. Sand waves tended to have greater relief and a sharper asymmetry during the survey in September than during those in June or April. \r\n\r\nDuring the survey period the sand waves moved but the direction and rate of motion was variable. Even along an individual sand wave some parts moved as much as 60 m between surveys while other parts apparently remained stationary. The sand waves were asymmetrical, but movement was not consistently in the direction that the steep sides faced. Along the same sand wave, parts moved to the northwest while other parts moved to the southeast. Despite the complex pattern of sand motion, the mean displacement of the sand waves was below the resolution of the survey technique; to resolve it, a longer survey is needed.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83746","usgsCitation":"Twichell, D.C., 1983, Sand-wave movement on Little Georges Bank: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-746, ii, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83746.","productDescription":"ii, 22 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146581,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0746/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39361,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0746/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdae2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Twichell, David C.","contributorId":37730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Twichell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":163234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These constituents (as well as dissolved solids, hardness, and magnesium) each correlate well with specific conductance, whereas chloride, sodium, and nitrate each do not. Specific conductance ranges from 73 to 820 micromhos per centimeter throughout the study area. Short-term variations in water quality in the Spokane aquifer are generally greater than long-term variations. \r\n\r\nVertical variations in concentration of chemical constituents occurred in four of 15 wells used to sample the upper 50 feet of the aquifer along several cross sections. Changes in water quality from one cross section to another could not be directly related to land-use activities. \r\n\r\nA digital model was developed and used to simulate solute transport of conservative ions in the Spokane aquifer. Specifically, the model was used to estimate the impact of the chloride ion from recharge through septic tanks and from irrigation on the water quality of the aquifer. Analysis shows that the estimated impact on the aquifer from these two source loadings was less than a 1-milligram-per-liter increase throughout approximately 80 percent of the aquifer, but increases averaging about 3 milligrams per liter occurred in some peripheral areas. Various water-quality-management schemes based on manmade or natural stresses can be tested with the model.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82769","usgsCitation":"Vaccaro, J.J., and Bolke, E., 1983, Evaluation of water-quality characteristics of part of the Spokane Aquifer, Washington and Idaho, using a solute-transport digital model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-769, vi, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82769.","productDescription":"vi, 75 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145736,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0769/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39368,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0769/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f1cce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vaccaro, J. Two-thirds of the quadrangle is underlain by Precambrian metasedimentary, metavolcanic, plutonic, and hypabyssal intrusive rocks; this area is in part mountainous and in part uneven plains. One-third is underlain by Cenozoic basalt and is part of Harrat Buqum. Flows, which surround volcanic cones, form an east-dipping surface of low relief. \r\n\r\nPrecambrian metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks are mostly metamorphosed andesite and basalt flow rocks and turfs and are divided into two principal belts in the eastern and central to western parts of the quadrangle. Plutonic rocks, which are part of the An Nimas batholith, consist of tonalite, diorite, and some quartz diorite. These rocks are postdated by younger plutonic and hypabyssal rocks that include extensive graphic granite and rhyolite, several small bodies of granite, and meta-andesite dikes. \r\n\r\nVolcanoes on Harrat Buqum are cinder cones, composite cones, shield volcanoes, and lava cones; basalt flows originating in some of the volcanoes can be traced down the slope of the harrat, and some have blocked Wadi Ranyah causing deposition of silt, sand, and gravel. \r\n\r\nRadiometric age dating of Precambrian rocks from adjacent quadrangles suggests that the layered rocks of the Al Ufayriyah quadrangle may have formed about 900 Ma ago, plutonic rocks of the An Nimas batholith 835 to 800 Ma ago, and younger plutonic rocks from 640 to 570 Ma ago. Basalts of Harrat Buqum range in age from 3.5 to 1.72 \r\n\r\nA zone in the eastern part of the quadrangle contains small gold-quartz veins, a quartz breccia reef, and a contact metasomatic iron deposit.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr83295","usgsCitation":"Greene, R.C., 1983, Reconnaissance geology of the Al Ufayriyah quadrangle, sheet 20/42 A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-295, 1 map ;48 x 45 cm. +1 booklet (21 p. : map ; 28 cm.), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83295.","productDescription":"1 map ;48 x 45 cm. +1 booklet (21 p. : map ; 28 cm.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":135383,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0295/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":80230,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0295/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":80231,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0295/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640cef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greene, Robert C.","contributorId":36108,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greene","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":226550,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Groundwater, the principal source of supply, is distributed largely by public water systems. Principal water-bearing formations in descending order, include the surficial aquifer, artesian zone 1 in the Tamiami Formation, zone 2 in the upper part of the Hawthorn Formation, zone 3 in the lower part of the Hawthorn Formation and upper part of the Tampa Limestone, and zones 4 and 5 which comprise the Floridan aquifer. The surficial aquifer, except near tidewater, provides limited supplies of freshwater to wells. Artesian zone 1 is the major aquifer for public supply. It is contaminated by saline water in some areas, either as a result of inundation by storm-driven tides or by upwar leakage of mineralized water from underlying aquifers through uncased or improperly constructed wells. The city of Venice obtains some water from zone 2, but the water is brackish in much of the area. The water is suitable for irrigation in parts of the area. Except for local use of water for watering livestock and maintaining ponds, the water from zones 3, 4, and 5 is little used because of its poor quality. Later fault movement, detected in trench 3, and probably related to the faulting at trench 1, displaced unit Q2c a combined distance of 0.8 m down to the west along three faults.
