The map is one of a series of geochemical maps that together with the background information circular (Reiser and others, 1978) comprise the folio on the Chandalar quadrangle, Alaska. The data are plotted on a subdued base map showing the generalized geology, topography, and sample localities. Map symbols showing the ranges of metal values are indicated on the accompanying histograms and all values shown are considered anomalous. An explanation of sampling, preparation, analytical procedures, and geochemical raw data for all samples are discussed by O'Leary and others (1976). The -80 mesh (177 micrometers) stream sediment medium was used in this study because, given the rather restrictive time and manpower constraints, this sample medium combined with panned concentrates were determined to be the most economical and adequate media in this area of the north-central Brooks Range where clastic sediments are derived from local bedrock.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The study area is generally one of high relief with short fast moving streams and broad glacial valleys. All samples were taken from active streams, as close to the center channel as possible. All sediments were considered to be locally derived. Care was taken, when sampling an obviously glaciated terrane, to sample above or upstream from morainal material, wherever possible. Most samples were taken in areas where bedrock was within 30 m of the sample site.</span></p><p><span>Due to the high limit of determination for antimony by spectrographic analysis (100 parts per million), all samples collected in 1975 for this study were analyzed for antimony by the atomic absorption method. Spectrographic antimony values for samples collected prior to this study were not used. Background details of the regional geology and major structures are described in a companion report by Tysdal and Case (1979), and interpretation of the gravity data are described in a report by Case and others (1979). Preliminary reports of a paleomagnetic investigation have been reported by Hillhouse and Gromme (1977), and a more complete analysis of the results is in preparation. The aeromagnetic survey was flown at a nominal height of 300 m above the surface and flight lines were spaced about 1.7 km apart. Total magnetic field was measured by a proton-precession magnetometer. The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF), updated to 1976, was removed, and the residual values were computer-contoured to produce the aeromagnetic map (sheet 1). Detailed aeromagnetic maps at scale 1:63,360 and a map at scale 1:250,000 have been released as Open File Reports 78-1080 through 1083 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1978).&nbsp;</p><p>Magnetic anomalies in the Seward-Blying Sound region are somewhat less complex than in other parts of south-central Alaska, primarily because of the huge volume of relatively nonmagnetic flysch that constitutes the Valdez and Orca Groups. Several rather isolated groups of mafic-ultramafic rocks are significantly more magnetic than the flysch assemblages, and cause distinctive patterns of magnetic anomalies. Some of the major regional gravity anomalies were outlined by Thiel, Ostenso, Bonini (1960), and additional anomalies were defined by pre- and post-earthquake gravity studies reported by Barnes and Allen (1965) and Case, Barnes, Plafker, and Robbins (1966). Another gravity anomaly map was prepared by personnel of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) (Wood, 1966, p. 131; Rice, 1969, p. 5-20). Anomalies shown by Rice (1969) are broadly similar to those shown by Case, Barnes, Plafker, and Robbins (1966); Rice's interpretations concerned mainly gravity changed related to the earthquake, and the data were not interpreted in terms of regional geology. New gravity stations were established in 1976 as part of the mineral resource appraisal of the Seward and Blying Sound quadrangles. This report incorporates the new data obtained in 1976, reinterprets some anomalies previously discussed by Case, Barnes, Plafker, and Robbins (1966), and interprets other anomalies not previously discussed. Descriptions of the major rock units and structural features are found in the companion report by Tysdal and Case (in press). The data have been reexamined and intensities assigned where none had been assigned before, on the basis of available data. Other intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate hypocenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. Known or suspected explosions are listed in table 1 but are not plotted on the seismicity map.</p><p>The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map. The latitude and longitude were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped together and counted. A triangle represents the epicenter plotted to a tenth of a degree. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of all earthquakes located at that geographic position. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. A year shown below a triangle is the latest year for which the maximum intensity was recorded.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
