The temperature regime during the Wisconsin glacial age, from before about 45,000 years ago until about 12,000 years ago, was characterized by lower temperatures during all seasons. Wisconsin maximum (about 18,000 years before present) winter temperatures were at least 6 deg. Celsius below those of the present, and the relative decrease in summer temperature was as much as 8 deg. Celsius. The data provide evidence for a precipitation regime drier than that proposed by many studies. The maximum estimated increase in average annual precipitation during the full-glacial period is 40 percent above current precipitation. The increase in temperature signaling the end of the Wisconsin glacial age may have begun as early as about 16,000 years ago. The oldest record of desert scrub vegetation from the Nevada Test Site area dates to about 15,000 years ago. By 10,000 years before present, average annual temperatures may have approximated present values, although seasonal temperature and precipitation regimes probably differed from those of today. Climate changes during the last 10,000 years have been relatively minor variations in a warm, dry climatic regime. Probably future climatic changes include a brief but pronounced warm period within the next 500 years, followed by a protracted transition to the next glacial age during the next 10,000 years. Stream-sampling sites were upstream and downstream from potential, existing, or historical coal-mining areas. Field water-quality measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, pH, and dissolved oxygen were also made to aid in assessing stream water-quality conditions. The purpose of the study was to describe and quantify the benthic invertebrate communities in selected streams in coal-mining areas. Sampling was conducted on a near bimonthly basis throughout the growing season, beginning in April and May 1980, and continuing through September 1981. Conductivity is determined by making field measurements of apparent resisitivity at very low frequencies (0-20 cps), and interpreting the true resistivity of layers at various depths by curve-matching methods. Interpreted resistivity values are converted to corresponding conductivity values which are assumed to be applicable at 10^2 cps, an assumption which is considered valid because the conductivity of rock and soil is nearly constant at frequencies below 10^2 cps. Conductivity is estimated at higher frequencies (up to 10^6 cps) by using statistical correlations of three parameters obtained from laboratory measurements of rock and soil samples: conductivity at 10^2 cps, frequency and conductivity measured over the range 10^2 to 10^6 cps. Conductivity may also be estimated in this frequency range by using field measurements of water content and correlations of laboratory sample measurements of the three parameters: water content, frequency, and conductivity measured over the range 10^2 to 10^6 cps. This method is less accurate because nonrandom variation of ion concentration in natural pore water introduces error. \r\n\r\nDielectric constant is estimated in a similar manner from field-derived conductivity values applicable at 10^2 cps and statistical correlations of three parameters obtained from laboratory measurements of samples: conductivity measured at 10^2 cps, frequency, and dielectric constant measured over the frequency range 10^2 to 10^6 cps. Dielectric constant may also be estimated from field measurements of water content and correlations of laboratory sample measurements of the three parameters: water content, frequency, and dielectric constant measured from 10^2 to 10^6 cps, but again, this method is less accurate because of variation of ion concentration of pore water. \r\n\r\nSpecial laboratory procedures are used to measure conductivity and dielectric constant of rock and soil samples. Electrode polarization errors are minimized by using an electrode system that is electrochemically reversible-with ions in pore water.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83915","usgsCitation":"Scott, J.H., 1983, Electrical and magnetic properties of rock and soil: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-915, iv, 44 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83915.","productDescription":"iv, 44 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152324,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0915/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50429,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0915/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47e8e4b07f02db4bd20b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, J. Cumulative production is 445 BBO and annual production is 20 BBO. Demonstrated Reserves of crude-oil have declined over the past 10 years consistent with discoveries lagging production over the same period. The assessment of Undiscovered Resources shows a 90 percent probability that the amount discoverable lies between 321 and 1,417 BBO, 550 BBO being the most likely value. The most likely value for Ultimate recoverable resources is 1,718 BBO. The distribution of Ultimate Resources of crude oil will remain highly skewed toward the Middle East; no frontier areas that have potentials large enough to significantly affect present distribution are recognized. Rates of discovery have continued to decline over the past 20 years even though exploration activity has increased in recent years. Prudence dictates, therefore, that the low side of the assessment of Undiscovered Resources be responsibly considered and that alternate energy sources be a part of future planning. \r\n\r\nExtra-heavy oil and bitumen are assessed separately, with Reserves being figured as the annual productive capacity of installed facilities times 25 years. Although a previous, airborne electromagnetic survey found no anomalies in the vicinity of the ancient mines in the region, surface indications of anomalous copper and zinc at both Dhahar and Al Hajrah are abundant. \r\n\r\nReconnaissance Crone electromagnetic traverses across the Dhahar prospect area delineated numerous conductive zones, but none had a dip-angle anomaly of more than 10?. Similar results were obtained at Al Hajrah. \r\n\r\nWith one or two encouraging exceptions, self-potential surveys at Al Hajrah showed only broad gradients and anomalies having amplitudes of less than 40 mV. Dipole-dipole induced polarization surveys at Al Hajrah delineated two nearly continuous polarizable zones having an aggregate strike length of almost 7 km. The two zones are symmetrically disposed on either side of a median aplitic dike and may lie on opposing limbs of a south-plunging antiform. Chargeabilities in the anomalous zones are weak to moderate but in most places are clearly associated with anomalous copper and (or) zinc concentrations found by surface sampling. \r\n\r\nGround electromagnetic traverses are recommended to determine the most conductive intervals of anomalous induced polarization effect in the anomalous zones; these conductive intervals should then be tested by drilling, where appropriate. Reconnaissance self-potential traverses are also recommended at Dhahar, and additional ground electromagnetic surveys are recommended across two airborne electromagnetic anomalies located immediately southeast of the Al Hajrah target.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83778","usgsCitation":"Blank, H., 1983, Geophysical investigations in the Dhahar-Al Hajrah region, Wadi Malahah Quadrangle, southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-778, ii, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83778.","productDescription":"ii, 31 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150539,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":47548,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47549,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47550,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47551,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47552,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":47553,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0778/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c1b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blank, H. The purpose was to document changes in total phosphorus loads resulting from a change in agricultural waste management practices in the Johnson Brook watershed in Maine. Streamflow data include mean-daily discharges for the period May 12, 1980, through September 30, 1981, and instantaneous discharges determined during water quality sampling. Water quality data for the period March 1980 to September 1981 include total phosphorus concentrations determined from samples collected using cross-sectional depth-integrating sampling techniques and from samples collected using a pumping sampler. Suspended sediment concentrations, and water temperature and specific conductance values are also included. The precipitation data are daily totals for the period October 1980 through September 1981. One of the species is larger than any species identified from the Early Tertiary of Africa. Its lower teeth are from 60 to 100 percent wider and 50 percent longer than those in P. mokattamensis, hitherto the largest species known from Africa. The second species, the most poorly represented of the three, is in dental size roughly 40 percent as large as the first species or about the same size as P. variabilis of Africa. This fossil is identified as a primitive species of Masritherium, a North and East African genus restricted, previously to the later early Miocene. This identification indicates that the age of the Baid formation, long problematical, is early Miocene and, moreover, shows that the age of the fossil site is earliest Miocene (from 25 to 21Ma). Samples were collected from the upper and lower Calcasieu River between January 1980 and March 1981. Thirty-three samples (22 native-water and 11 effluent) were collected from eleven dredging sites. In addition, a series of elutriate studies were conducted between July 1979 and July 1981 to determine water quality as a basis for assessing possible environmental effects of proposed dredging activities in the following areas: Grand Bayou and Martins Canal near Happy Jack, unnamed bayou near Port Sulphur, Grand Bayou and Pipeline Canal near Port Sulphur and Bayou des Plantins near Empire; Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and Inner Harbor Navigation Canal; Southwest Pass; Barataria Bay; Atchafalaya Bay at Eugene Island; Calcasieu Ship Channel. Samples of native water and samples of bottom material were collected from 22 different sites and elutriate (mixtures of native water and bottom material) samples were prepared and analyzed. Large in 1979 and 1980 has been redesigned to permit its use in a computer-assisted search for exploration-target areas in Devonian rocks of the Appalachian region using attribute-coincidence mapping (ACM). Some 36 gridded-data maps and selected maps derived therefrom were developed to show the orthogonal patterns, using the 7-1/2 minute quadrangle as an information cell, of geologic data patterns relevant to the empirical model. From these map and data files, six attribute-coincidence maps were prepared to illustrate both variation in the application of ACM techniques and the extent of possible significant exploration-target areas. As a result of this preliminary work in ACM, four major (and some lesser) exploration-target areas needing further study and analysis have been defined as follows: 1) in western and central New York in the outcrop area of lowermost Upper Devonian rocks straddling the Clarendon-Linden fault; 2) in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia in an area largely coincident with the well-known 'Oriskany' Mn-Fe ores; 3) an area in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia along and nearby the trend of the Alabama-New York lineament of King and Zietz approximately between 38- and 40-degrees N. latitude; and 4) an area in northeastern Ohio overlying an area coincident with a significant thickness of Silurian salt and high modern seismic activity. Some lesser, smaller areas suggested by relatively high coincidence may also be worthy of further study.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83352","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., 1983, A search for stratiform massive-sulfide exploration targets in Appalachian Devonian rocks; a case study using computer-assisted attribute-coincidence mapping: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-352, 84 p. maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83352.","productDescription":"84 p. maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146100,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0352/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39464,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0352/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b18e4b07f02db6a7031","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth","contributorId":67495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The study area includes a small segment of the Willamette River alluvial valley near Canby, and extends northward to the Clackamas River and eastward to the western boundary of Mount Hood National Forest. Also included is the narrow, well-populated corridor along U.S. Highway 26 from Cherryville to Government Camp.</p><p>The main part of the study area is largely a rolling upland underlain by volcanic and stream-deposited rocks ranging in age from Eocene to Holocene. In most places, these rocks yield water in quantities adequate for individual homes. Locally, ground-water supplies are adequate for small irrigation, industrial, or public-supply uses. Depths of wells range from 50 to 1,000 feet; wells generally are shallowest in lowlands near streams and deepest in upland locations near deeply incised stream valleys.</p><p>All aquifers receive recharge at sufficient rates to sustain present rates of natural and man-produced discharge. All aquifers could supply additional water, but careful engineering is needed to avoid overdevelopment problems for the Columbia River Basalt Group near Oregon City.</p><p>Chemical analyses indicate that the ground water in the study area is of good quality for drinking and other uses. Mineralized water reported from some wells northeast of Canby may be from rocks of the Skamania Volcanics, which locally are at shallow depth. Nonetheless, by analogy with uranium deposits studied elsewhere, exploration guides are suggested to include dense concentrations of linear features, lineaments -- especially with northwest trend, acidic plutonic rocks, and alteration indicated by limonite. \r\n\r\nA suite of digitally processed images of a single Landsat scene served as the image base for mapping 3,376 linear features. Analysis of the linear feature data yielded two statistically significant trends, which in turn defined two sets of strong lineaments. Color composite images were used to map acidic plutonic rocks and areas of surficial limonitic materials. The Landsat interpretation yielded a map of these exploration guides that may be used to evaluate relative uranium potential. This \r\nJurassic intrusion displays large and systematic chemical and mineralogical \r\nzonation over a horizontal distance of 5 km. Major-element variations compare \r\nclosely with Dalyls average andesite-dacite-rhyolite over an SiO 2 range of 63 \r\nto 76 percent. \r\nFor various reasons it was originally thought that assimilation played a \r\ndominant role in development of the Snake Creek-Williams Canyon pluton. \r\nHowever, based on modeling of more recently obtained trace element and \r\nisotopic data, we have concluded that the zonation is the result of in-situ \r\nfractional crystallization, with little assimilation at the level of \r\ncrystallization. \r\nThis report summarizes data available for each of the mineral species \r\npresent in the zoned intrusion. Special attention has been paid to trends \r\nthat might relate to the variation in the chemical petrology of the pluton.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83337","usgsCitation":"Lee, D.E., and Christiansen, E., 1983, The mineralogy of the Snake Creek-Williams Canyon pluton, southern Snake Range, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-337, 24 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83337.","productDescription":"24 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143355,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0337/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37777,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0337/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4933","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, Donald Edward","contributorId":101660,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Christiansen, Eric H.","contributorId":71175,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Christiansen","given":"Eric H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160606,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
