Data on more than 7,500 wells on the island have been collected by various State and local agencies and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey since 1906. During 1975-81, the Geological Survey developed a data base for its Data General Nova 1220 minicomputer to store and process the well information. The data base is composed of seven sections, each of which may be revised and updated. Three types of magnetic devices with limited capacity are used for data storage--disk, Linctape, and 9-track tape. This breakdown makes each section small enough to store and update on a small minicomputer while allowing simultaneous data retrieval from all sections. This manual gives complete instructions for revising, storing, and retrieving well data. Most programming is in FORTRAN, but some is in assembly language. These surveys were guided by geological information acquired during previous reconnaissance mapping. \r\n\r\nLocally anomalous areas in alkalic and calc-alkalic granitic terrane are possible sources of niobium-zirconiumthorium-fluorite, tin-tungsten, and copper-molybdenum, although the potential of these areas does not appear to be outstanding. The absence of exceptionally high values of cobalt and arsenic, the nearly lognormal distribution of cobalt values, and the lack of correlation between the highest values of cobalt and arsenic were unanticipated results that do not support the use of this sampling technique. However, highest values of several metals, including cobalt, were associated with an identified area of cobalt mineralization, and high cobalt was present near a second area in which cobalt mineralization is suspected. Substantial drilling-fluid losses, and the occurrence of drilling-induced fracturing, are understandable in terms of the low, minimum horizontal stress magnitudes interpreted from six hydraulic-fracturing stress measurements conducted between hole depths of 640 and 1,300 meters. Although not confirmed directly by the hydraulic-fracturing data, other observations suggest that the minimum stress magnitudes in the more densely welded and brittle tuff layers may be even smaller than in the less welded and more ductile rocks. Stress-induced borehole ellipticity observed along most of the length of USW G-1 indicates that the horizontal stress components are not equal, and that the concentration of these stresses around the hole is sufficient to locally exceed the yield strength of the rock. The low, minimum horizontal stress magnitudes, perhaps variable with lithology, and the indications from borehole ellipticity of a high in-situ stress/strength ratio, indicate the need for further studies to characterize the structural and geomechanical properties of the rocks at depth in Yucca Mountain.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83401","usgsCitation":"Ellis, W., and Swolfs, H.S., 1983, Preliminary assessment of in-situ geomechanical characteristics in drill hole USW G-1, Yucca Mountain, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-401, ii, 20 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83401.","productDescription":"ii, 20 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142051,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0401/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36315,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0401/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c776","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, William L.","contributorId":89128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"William L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Swolfs, Henri S.","contributorId":50897,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swolfs","given":"Henri","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Ground magnetic measurements made in the vicinity of several known cased wells yielded total field anomalies with peak values ranging from about 1,500 to 6,000 gammas. The anomalies measured on the ground are very narrow and, considering noise due to other cultural and geologic sources, a line spacing on the order of 50 feet (15.2 m) would be necessary to locate all casings in the test area. \r\n\r\nThe mathematical model used to represent a casing was a set of magnetic pole pairs. By use of a non-linear least squares curve fitting (inversion) program, model parameters which characterize each test casing were determined. The position and strength of the uppermost pole was usually well resolved. The parameters of lower poles were not as well resolved but it appears that the results are adequate for predicting the anomalies which would be observed at aircraft altitudes. Modeling based on the parameters determined from the ground data indicates that all of the test casings could be detected by airborne measurements made at heights of 150 to 200 feet (45.7-61.0 m) above the ground, provided lines spaced as closely as 330 feet (100 m) were used and provided noise due to other cultural and geologic sources is not very large. Given the noise levels of currently available equipment and assuming very low magnetic gradients due to geologic sources, the detection range for total field measurements is greater than that for measurements of the horizontal or vertical gradient of the total intensity. \r\n\r\nElectrical self-potential anomalies were found to be associated with most of the casings where measurements were made. However, the anomalies tend to be very narrow and, in several cases, they are comparable in magnitude to other small anomalies which are not directly associated with casings. Measurements made with a terrain conductivity meter and slingram system were negative. However, from other work it is known that electrical resistivity and induced polarization measurements can be influenced significantly by the presence of a casing. \r\n\r\nIt is concluded that detailed ground magnetic surveys would be effective in locating casings within relatively small areas. It would be very costly to cover large areas with ground surveys but it appears that airborne surveys may be a cost-effective means of locating wells when the search area is on the order of a few square miles or more. Also, airborne methods could be used in some areas where access to the area on the ground is difficult or impossible.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83702","usgsCitation":"Frischknecht, F.C., Muth, L., Grette, R., Buckley, T., and Kornegay, B., 1983, Geophysical methods for locating abandoned wells: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-702, ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83702.","productDescription":"ii, 211 p. chiefly ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140173,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34601,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0702/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a85dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frischknecht, Frank C.","contributorId":57838,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frischknecht","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Muth, L.","contributorId":10035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Muth","given":"L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grette, R.","contributorId":13230,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grette","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Buckley, T.","contributorId":17222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buckley","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kornegay, B.","contributorId":93041,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kornegay","given":"B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154737,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Unavoidable uncertainty in the true stress on the prototype and in the true response of the prototype to that stress will introduce errors into the parameter identification problem. A method for evaluating errors in the predictions of future water levels due to errors in recharge estimates was demonstrated. The method involves a Monte Carlo simulation of the parameter identification problem and of the prediction problem. The steps in the method are: (1) to prescribe the distribution of the recharge estimates; (2) to use this distribution to generate random sets of recharge estimates; (3) to use the Gauss optimization technique to identify the corresponding set of parameter estimates for each set of recharge estimates; (4) to make the corresponding set of hydraulic head predictions for each set of parameter estimates; and (5) to examine the distribution of hydraulic head predictions and to draw appropriate conclusions. Similarly, the method can be used independently or simultaneously to estimate the effect on hydraulic head predictions of errors in the measured water levels that are used in the parameter identification problem. The fit of the model to the data that are used to identify parameters is not a good indicator of these errors. A Monte Carlo simulation of the parameter identification problem can be used, however, to evaluate the effects on water level predictions of errors in the recharge (and pumpage) data used in the parameter identification problem. The test hole was drilled in the SW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec. 2, T.12N., R.3E., Sutter County, California, about 1 1/2 miles northwest of the town of Nicolaus. Drilled to a depth of 1,150 feet below land surface, the hole is cased to a depth of 100 feet and equipped with three piezometer tubes to depths of 311, 711, and 1,071 feet. A 5-foot well screen is set in sand at the bottom of each piezometer. Each screened interval has a cement plug above and below it to isolate it from other parts of the aquifer, and the well bore is filled between the plugs with sediment. Thirty-one cores and 34 sidewall cores were recovered. Laboratory tests were made for minerology, consolidation, grain-size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction, thermal conductivity, and chemical analysis of water. Geophysical and thermal gradient logs were made. The hole is sampled periodically for chemical analysis of the three tapped zones and measured for water level. In the Assifar area, which contains an ancient mine or prospect having the same name, geophysical data suggest that a mineralized body may lie beneath and immediately south of the ancient workings. Many other conductive zones detected during the course of the geophysical survey are thought to be related to metavolcanic rocks containing carbonaceous materials. Detailed geologic mapping, and possibly diamond core drilling, will be necessary to fully evaluate the area.</p>\n<p>In the Mulhal No. 2 area, located about 2 km south of the Mulhal ancient mine, geophysical studies suggest that mineralized rocks extend about 500 m along strike beneath outcrops of gossanous material.</p>\n<p>A brief review of the AEM ground-followup studies in the Wadi Bidah district suggests that most, if not all, of the AEM conductors are carbonaceous rocks. Secondary causes of conductivity are intense faulting and shearing.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr83367","usgsCitation":"Flanigan, V.J., and Sadek, H., 1983, Ground-followup studies of the 1977 airborne electromagnetic survey in the Assifar and Mulhal areas, Wadi Bidah district, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-367, Report: 48 p.; Maps: 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83367.","productDescription":"Report: 48 p.; Maps: 28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142153,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0367/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36420,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0367/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36421,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0367/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36422,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0367/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36423,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0367/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              41,\n              20\n            ],\n            [\n              41,\n              21\n            ],\n            [\n             41.5,\n              21\n            ],\n            [\n             41.5,\n             20\n            ],\n            [\n              41,\n             20\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d49f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flanigan, Vincent J.","contributorId":37735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flanigan","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sadek, Hamdy","contributorId":97491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sadek","given":"Hamdy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158429,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
