In the northern and the extreme southern parts of the county, most wells are completed in bedrock at depths less than 100 feet. In the central part, most wells are completed in glacial deposits; some of these wells are as deep as 200 feet. Yields, in some places as high as 300 gallons per minute, are generally greatest from wells completed in glacial deposits. Most well water is hard and has iron concentrations ranging from <0.1 mg/L to about 5.0 mg/L. Both ground water and surface water sources are used in municipal water systems.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Lansing, No potential hazards were observed on the continental shelf or rise. Other geology-related problems, termed constraints because they pose a relatively low degree of risk and can be routinely dealt with by the use of existing technology have been observed on the continental shelf. Constraints identified in the proposed sale area are erosion, sand waves, filled channels and deep faults. \r\n\r\nPiston cores were collected for geotechnical analysis at selected locations on the continental slope in the proposed lease sale area. The core locations were selected to provide information on slope stability and to establish the general geotechnical properties of the sediments. Preliminary results of a testing program suggest that the surficial sediment cover is stable with respect to mass movement.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8236","usgsCitation":"Carpenter, G., Cardinell, A., Francois, D., Good, L., Lewis, R., and Stiles, N., 1982, Potential geologic hazards and constraints for blocks in proposed North Atlantic OCS Oil and gas lease sale 52: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-36, ii, 54 p., 3 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8236.","productDescription":"ii, 54 p., 3 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141517,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0036/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34823,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0036/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34824,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0036/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34825,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0036/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34826,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8801","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carpenter, G.B.","contributorId":54593,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carpenter","given":"G.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cardinell, A.P.","contributorId":59033,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cardinell","given":"A.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155524,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Francois, D.K.","contributorId":101666,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Francois","given":"D.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155527,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Good, L.K.","contributorId":103279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Good","given":"L.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155528,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Lewis, R.L.","contributorId":82306,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lewis","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155526,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Stiles, N.T.","contributorId":59034,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stiles","given":"N.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155525,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

The drilling was undertaken to obtain information on the geotechnical characteristics of a part of the coal-bearing Tyonek Formation and overlying surficial deposits. The preliminary results of a previous drill hole (1C-79), located 1.3 km (0.8 mi) northeast of drill hole 2C-80, were reported by Chleborad and others (1980).

The Tyonek Formation is early Oligocene to middle Miocene in age (Wolfe and Tanai, 1980). At the drill site it is overlain by a thin colluvial deposit of Quaternary age.

The drilling and continuous core sampling penetrated 19.5 m (63.9 ft) of overburden, a major coal bed (Waterfall bed), and approximately 29 m (95.1 ft) of underlying material, to a total depth of 61 m (200 ft). Drill hole 2C-80 stratigraphically overlaps drill hole 1C-79 and continues down section approximately 33 m (108 ft).

A proposed open pit coal-mining plan (Placer Amex, Inc., 1977, status report of December 1977) outlines a sequential mining and reclamation scheme for five areas in the Capps Coal Field. Figure 2 shows the location of drill holes 2C-80 and 1C-79 with respect to the proposed mining areas as well as selected surface features. A general description of the geology and natural hazards of the region are given by Schmoll and others (1981).

The generalized lithology interpreted from core obtained from drilling and supplemented by outcrop mapping accomplished during the 1979 and 1980 field seasons is presented in figure 3. A more detailed lithologic log is presented as part of the geotechnical log.

The geotechnical and geophysical logs presented herein (pls. 1 and 2) provide basic physical-property and engineering data useful in predicting the response of geologic materials to proposed large-scale coal mining and related development, and in identifying and assessing potential geologic hazards.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82884","usgsCitation":"Chleborad, A.F., Yehle, L.A., Schmoll, H.R., Gardner, C.A., and Dearborn, L.L., 1982, Preliminary geotechnical and geophysical logs from drill hole 2C-80 in the Capps coal field, Cook Inlet region, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-884, Report: i, 9 p.; 2 Plates: 24.10 x 39.76  inches and 38.76 x 30.15 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82884.","productDescription":"Report: i, 9 p.; 2 Plates: 24.10 x 39.76  inches and 38.76 x 30.15 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140372,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":419626,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419625,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419624,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0884/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Capps coal field, Cook Inlet region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -152.76239838016622,\n              60.08744633316809\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.76239838016622,\n              59.16858664727599\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.57638556145136,\n              59.16858664727599\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.57638556145136,\n              60.08744633316809\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.76239838016622,\n              60.08744633316809\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db6734c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chleborad, Alan F.","contributorId":87578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chleborad","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155605,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Yehle, Lynn A. yehle@usgs.gov","contributorId":3794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yehle","given":"Lynn","email":"yehle@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":155606,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schmoll, Henry R. schmoll@usgs.gov","contributorId":3793,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmoll","given":"Henry","email":"schmoll@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":155608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gardner, Cynthia A. 0000-0002-6214-6182 cgardner@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6214-6182","contributorId":1959,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gardner","given":"Cynthia","email":"cgardner@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":155609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Dearborn, Larry L.","contributorId":66687,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dearborn","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":155607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The most widespread and widely used aquifer lies near sea level. Locally, available data also indicate that one or more water-bearing zones lie above the sea-level aquifer. Pumpage in 1979 totaled about 1.67 billion gallons; about 90% was pumped from the sea-level aquifer. Most large producing wells in the county have pumping water levels near or below sea level, so that if pumping continued for a long enough time, seawater intrusion would result. Sampling of chloride concentrations in July 1978, April 1980, and August 1980 indicated problem areas mainly in northeastern and southern Camano Island and in central Whidbey Island. Sediment and nutrient yield, discharge, and water temperature data were collected during the 1976 irrigation season and the following fall and winter. The suspended-sediment yield of the basin during this period was 2.0 tons per acre of irrigated cropland. Only about 3% of the net outflow of sediment occurred during the nonirrigation season. The yield computed by subbasin ranged from 0.7 to 7 tons per acre, depending mainly on land slope, but a high percentage of orchard land in the subbasins was probably also significant in reducing loads. Nutrient outflows during the study period were 1,180,000 pounds of nitrogen and 120,000 pounds of phosphorous. Nitrate-plus-nitrite represent 70% of the nitrogen outflow in the irrigation season and 84% in the nonirrigation season. The monitoring network was discontinued at the end of the study period, due largely to insufficient farmer participation. Network sensitivity in the control subbasins was inadequate to detect the effects of a planned demonstration program of best management practices. That shock was the second largest known to have occurred in the southeastern United States (MMI VIII, mb estimated at 5.8, felt over 725,000 km2). It struck Giles County in southwestern Virginia, and a recurrence would affect populous regions on and near the central Atlantic seaboard. This paper attempts to aid in evaluating that hazard by presenting and synthesizing new seismological data with geological inferences and deductions.

A five-station, 60-km aperture seismic network has been in operation in the Giles County locale since early 1978. For the subsequent 3-year monitoring period, 10 microearthquakes (M < 2) have been detected. Eight of those 10 events, plus an additional 4 relocated felt earthquakes (3.2 < M < 4.1; 1959-1976) have a tabular distribution centered at Pearisburg, Virginia. That distribution is about 40 km long, 10 km wide, strikes N. 43° E., and has a nearly vertical extent of from 5 km to 25 km in depth. Thus, a Giles County seismogenic zone is defined presently by 12 earthquakes that span 4 orders of magnitude (0 < M < 4) and 2 decades of time (1959-1980). We conclude that the 1897 earthquake occurred on that seismogenic zone. From the orientation of the tabular zone, from evidence that greatest horizontal compressive stress trends east-northeasterly at seismogenic depths in and near Giles County and from sparse P-wave first-motion data, we infer that the monitored microseismicity probably occurs by right-reverse motion on the seismogenic zone, with the southeast side dropping down with respect to the northwest side.

In the Giles County locale, the upper 3-6 km of the crust are Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that have moved some tens of kilometers northwest on nearly horizontal detachment faults. The above-mentioned reliable hypocenters for the region lie below the deepest likely detachment, indicating that Giles County seismicity probably has no simple relationship to surface geology.

Since Precambrian time, three deformational episodes could have formed steep faults under today's surface structures, at the observed hypocentral depths. These episodes were as follows: (1) As the Iapetus Ocean (Atlantic's predecessor) opened in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic time, northeast-striking normal faults formed, probably at the inferred Iapetan continental edge in central Virginia and at least as far northwest of that locus as Giles County. (2) In late Paleozoic time, detachment faults loaded the crust with several kilometers of overthrust sedimentary rocks, perhaps forming northeast-striking thrust-load faults in a brittle analogue of isostatic depression caused by thrust masses and much lighter continental glaciers. (3) As the Atlantic Ocean opened in Mesozoic time, other northeast-striking normal faults formed on the present continental margin and inland of it.

The N. 43° E.-striking seismogenic zone seems most likely to have resulted from compressional reactivation of an Iapetan normal fault, which also may have been reactivated by late Paleozoic compression and Mesozoic extension. First, the seismogenic zone probably does not occur on a thrust-load fault. The zone underlies detached structures of southern Appalachian orientations (east-northeast), but those structures are not known to be displaced where they cross the zone. Thus, if the zone occurs on a thrust-load fault, the fault and its coeval causative central Appalachian detachments would pre-date the southern Appalachian structures. That deduction contradicts stratigraphic and structural estimates of relative ages of southern and central Appalachian detachments. Second, the zone probably does not result from a Mesozoic normal fault, because known locations of Mesozoic normal faults and grabens are well to the southeast of Giles County.

Not yet known is where else in the East reactivated Iapetan normal faults might generate shocks similar to that of 1897. However, our analysis enables us to suggest specific geological and geophysical investigations that may produce results useful in answering that question. Such investigations can concentrate on defining the area of probable occurrence of other Iapetan normal faults, and on determining whether the one inferred to underlie Giles County is uniquely active or is typical of others that might exist elsewhere.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82585","usgsCitation":"Bollinger, G.A., and Wheeler, R.L., 1982, The Giles County, Virginia, seismogenic zone-- Seismological results and geological interpretations: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-585, iv, 136 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82585.","productDescription":"iv, 136 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":412470,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0585/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140332,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0585/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","county":"Giles County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-80.4761,37.4269],[-80.4506,37.3704],[-80.4417,37.3506],[-80.428,37.3194],[-80.4481,37.3088],[-80.4756,37.2905],[-80.4912,37.2822],[-80.5049,37.273],[-80.5147,37.2688],[-80.5302,37.2633],[-80.5551,37.2608],[-80.5787,37.2542],[-80.6075,37.2467],[-80.6219,37.2425],[-80.6724,37.2239],[-80.6828,37.2197],[-80.7051,37.209],[-80.7218,37.2039],[-80.7794,37.1888],[-80.804,37.1786],[-80.8286,37.1615],[-80.856,37.1476],[-80.8678,37.157],[-80.8824,37.1686],[-80.8624,37.1797],[-80.8725,37.1928],[-80.8947,37.1798],[-81.0099,37.2746],[-80.9785,37.294],[-80.9777,37.2934],[-80.9772,37.2932],[-80.9756,37.2931],[-80.9686,37.2927],[-80.9651,37.2932],[-80.9595,37.294],[-80.9566,37.2948],[-80.949,37.2971],[-80.9394,37.2999],[-80.9347,37.3015],[-80.9209,37.307],[-80.9111,37.3107],[-80.8985,37.3171],[-80.8916,37.3218],[-80.8859,37.3264],[-80.8813,37.33],[-80.8795,37.3312],[-80.8767,37.3332],[-80.8735,37.3352],[-80.8709,37.3368],[-80.8646,37.3401],[-80.8627,37.3411],[-80.859,37.3434],[-80.8544,37.3453],[-80.8516,37.3476],[-80.8504,37.3495],[-80.8532,37.3533],[-80.8705,37.371],[-80.8736,37.3737],[-80.8782,37.3777],[-80.8817,37.3817],[-80.8824,37.3848],[-80.8808,37.3889],[-80.8778,37.3926],[-80.8643,37.4096],[-80.8655,37.4132],[-80.8661,37.4159],[-80.8662,37.4184],[-80.8661,37.4189],[-80.8633,37.423],[-80.8627,37.4239],[-80.8575,37.4304],[-80.853,37.4278],[-80.8484,37.4256],[-80.8451,37.4257],[-80.842,37.4257],[-80.8367,37.4248],[-80.8321,37.4222],[-80.8244,37.4168],[-80.8157,37.4115],[-80.8097,37.4062],[-80.8051,37.4012],[-80.8021,37.3981],[-80.8004,37.3963],[-80.7986,37.3954],[-80.7968,37.395],[-80.7963,37.3948],[-80.7939,37.3946],[-80.7934,37.3945],[-80.7899,37.3945],[-80.7864,37.3936],[-80.7834,37.3923],[-80.7793,37.3878],[-80.7757,37.382],[-80.7709,37.3729],[-80.7629,37.3748],[-80.7531,37.3776],[-80.7507,37.3784],[-80.7423,37.3812],[-80.7307,37.3849],[-80.7248,37.3874],[-80.7198,37.3895],[-80.7052,37.3958],[-80.7048,37.396],[-80.684,37.4056],[-80.6696,37.4116],[-80.6518,37.4199],[-80.6363,37.4282],[-80.6276,37.4328],[-80.6219,37.4361],[-80.6176,37.4385],[-80.613,37.4404],[-80.6077,37.4427],[-80.6052,37.4439],[-80.603,37.445],[-80.5986,37.4473],[-80.5899,37.4523],[-80.5807,37.4583],[-80.5732,37.4628],[-80.5673,37.4661],[-80.5563,37.4707],[-80.55,37.4729],[-80.5407,37.4752],[-80.5309,37.4768],[-80.5182,37.4796],[-80.5156,37.48],[-80.5124,37.4806],[-80.5083,37.481],[-80.5054,37.4802],[-80.5026,37.4789],[-80.5002,37.4761],[-80.4984,37.473],[-80.4954,37.4666],[-80.4932,37.4596],[-80.4931,37.4528],[-80.4937,37.4487],[-80.4939,37.4467],[-80.4942,37.4446],[-80.4936,37.4419],[-80.4919,37.4396],[-80.4905,37.4379],[-80.4901,37.4374],[-80.4884,37.4356],[-80.486,37.4333],[-80.4831,37.4319],[-80.4802,37.4283],[-80.4761,37.4269]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Giles\",\"state\":\"VA\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c56e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bollinger, G. At least 18 new uranium occurrences were found, most of which are less than a square meter. These discoveries enlarge the uraniferous area reported by Young and Hauff in 1975. Uranium in these biotite concentrations occurs in several modes: as uraninite grains; in accessory minerals, such as zircon; in fractures in plagioclase; and along grain boundaries and in cleavage openings in mica. Uranium mineralogy in the fractures, grain boundaries, and micas is not known. Yellow, secondary uranium minerals are seen locally on outcrop. Relative to crustal abundance, the radioactive biotite concentrations in migmatized biotite gneiss show depletion in Ca, Sr, Na, and, locally, Cu, but pronounced enrichment in U and Mo, and moderate enrichment in Pb, Ag, Th, and REE. The radioactive biotite concentrations in the Silver Plume Granite show pronounced enrichment in Th, and moderate enrichment in U, Sn, Zr, and Ag. Enrichment in light REE predominates over heavy REE. As U is more abundant in biotite concentrations in migmatized biotite gneiss than in biotite concentrations in Silver Plume Granite, I have concluded that U in the migmatized biotite gneiss was present before intrusion of the Silver Plume Granite, and that metamorphic effects of the Silver Plume intrusion remobilized U to form pockets of enrichment (biotite concentrations).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82730","usgsCitation":"Young, E.J., 1982, Uranium in Wheeler Basin, Grand County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-730, 31 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82730.","productDescription":"31 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144758,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0730/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39673,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0730/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db6054a1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Young, E. Most of the leased tracts are in deep water along the Continental Slope off North Carolina. To date, no drilling has occurred on these tracts, but it is likely that two wells will be drilled or will be in the process of being drilled by the end of 1982. Reoffering Sale RS-2 is scheduled for July 1982, and it will include tracts offered in Lease Sale 56 that were not awarded leases. Lease Sale 78 is scheduled to be held in July 1983.

The most recent (March 1982) estimates of risked resources for leased lands in the South Atlantic OCS are 27 million barrels of oil and 120 billion cubic feet of gas.

To date, onshore impacts resulting from OCS exploration have been minimal, and they were associated with Lease Sale 43 exploratory activities. Tenneco, using existing facilities, established a support base in Savannah, Georgia; Getty, Transco, and Exxon used a support base established for them by the city of Brunswick, Georgia. The port at Morehead City, North Carolina, is expected to provide the onshore facilities for exploration in the near future on Lease Sale 56 tracts. Arrangements for the use of these facilities are currently being negotiated.

In June 1981, the South Atlantic Regional Technical Working Group prepared a Regional Transportation Management Plan for the South Atlantic OCS. The plan is principally an integration of regulatory frameworks, policies, and plans that are applicable to pipeline siting from each of the South Atlantic coastal States and Federal agencies with jurisdiction in the area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8215","collaboration":"Prepared for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service, in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Deis, J.L., Kurz, F.N., and Porter, E.O., 1982, South Atlantic summary report 2: A revision of Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas activities in the South Atlantic (U.S.) and their onshore impacts, a summary report, July 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-15, viii, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8215.","productDescription":"viii, 50 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407021,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0015/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141696,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0015/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Outer Continental Shelf, South Atlantic","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.298828125,\n              25.48295117535531\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.46484375,\n              25.48295117535531\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.46484375,\n              36.66841891894786\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.298828125,\n              36.66841891894786\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.298828125,\n              25.48295117535531\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e6e4b07f02db5e7510","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Deis, Jeffrey L.","contributorId":10423,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Deis","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157905,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kurz, Frederick N.","contributorId":47785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kurz","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Porter, Elizabeth O.","contributorId":104491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Porter","given":"Elizabeth","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This report contains hydrologic data collected in an active coal mining area in Clay and Vigo Counties, Indiana, from September 1977 through February 1980. Methods of sampling and analysis used in collecting the data also are summarized. The data include field and laboratory measurements of water at 41 wells and 24 stream sites. Variables measured in the field include water temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, ground-water levels, and streamflow; and in the laboratory, concentrations of major ions, alkalinity, hardness, trace elementsl, organic carbon, phosphorus, and dissolved solids. Other variables measured in the laboratory include ferrous iron concentration of water samples from selected wells, percent sulfur by weight and the potential acidity of core samples of reclaimed cast overburden, concentrations of elements absorbed on streambed materials, concentrations and particle size of suspended sediment in water, and populations and Shannon diversity indices of phytoplankton in water. Dissolved-solids concentrations and pH of ground water ranged from 173 to 5,130 milligrams per liter and from 6.1 to 8.9, respectively, and of surface water, from 120 to 4,100 milligrams per liter and from 6.1 to 8.8 respectively.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82639","usgsCitation":"Bobo, L.L., and Eikenberry, S.E., 1982, Hydrologic data collected in and around a surface coal mine, Clay and Vigo counties, Indiana, 1977-80: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-639, vii, 123 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82639.","productDescription":"vii, 123 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":346,"text":"Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140240,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0639/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35533,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0639/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","county":"Clay, Vigo","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-87.1992,39.6082],[-87.1233,39.6063],[-87.011,39.6041],[-87.0116,39.5176],[-87.0125,39.4736],[-86.9404,39.4734],[-86.9426,39.3424],[-87.014,39.3426],[-87.0532,39.3433],[-87.0549,39.1701],[-87.1267,39.1702],[-87.2383,39.1728],[-87.238,39.2607],[-87.3485,39.2605],[-87.4578,39.2606],[-87.572,39.261],[-87.6011,39.2612],[-87.6023,39.2626],[-87.6032,39.2638],[-87.6031,39.267],[-87.603,39.2694],[-87.6018,39.2724],[-87.6012,39.2744],[-87.602,39.2768],[-87.6034,39.2783],[-87.6048,39.28],[-87.6057,39.2811],[-87.6062,39.2838],[-87.6068,39.2852],[-87.6068,39.2874],[-87.6049,39.2901],[-87.6031,39.2924],[-87.6006,39.2946],[-87.5988,39.2968],[-87.5981,39.2991],[-87.5987,39.3011],[-87.599,39.3016],[-87.5999,39.3034],[-87.6023,39.3047],[-87.6047,39.3052],[-87.6089,39.3047],[-87.6118,39.3042],[-87.6148,39.3042],[-87.616,39.3044],[-87.617,39.3048],[-87.6182,39.3061],[-87.6181,39.308],[-87.6169,39.3089],[-87.6149,39.3096],[-87.6141,39.3098],[-87.6107,39.3106],[-87.6078,39.3116],[-87.6061,39.3128],[-87.6036,39.3155],[-87.5993,39.3218],[-87.595,39.3267],[-87.5941,39.328],[-87.5925,39.3303],[-87.5901,39.3334],[-87.5876,39.3361],[-87.585,39.3385],[-87.5826,39.3402],[-87.582,39.3405],[-87.5803,39.3412],[-87.5767,39.3426],[-87.5726,39.3431],[-87.5666,39.3426],[-87.5645,39.3424],[-87.5595,39.342],[-87.5588,39.342],[-87.5565,39.3423],[-87.5547,39.3428],[-87.5518,39.3437],[-87.55,39.3451],[-87.5482,39.3474],[-87.5479,39.3479],[-87.5471,39.3492],[-87.5465,39.3509],[-87.5455,39.3522],[-87.5449,39.3529],[-87.5442,39.3533],[-87.5418,39.3542],[-87.5411,39.3544],[-87.5401,39.3544],[-87.539,39.354],[-87.537,39.3529],[-87.5348,39.3517],[-87.5322,39.3507],[-87.5304,39.3516],[-87.5308,39.4178],[-87.5307,39.4388],[-87.5309,39.4767],[-87.5309,39.5615],[-87.531,39.5988],[-87.5311,39.6091],[-87.4607,39.6096],[-87.3819,39.6093],[-87.349,39.6091],[-87.2356,39.6089],[-87.1992,39.6082]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Clay\",\"state\":\"IN\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a26e4b07f02db60f7c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bobo, Linda L.","contributorId":104053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bobo","given":"Linda","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Eikenberry, Stephen E.","contributorId":35309,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eikenberry","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
