It was erupted 19 m.y. ago, shortly after the changeover from intermediate-composition calc-alkalic volcanism to bimodal basalt-rhyolite volcanism. Eruption of the tuff resulted in the formation of the Mount Belknap Caldera whose pyroclastic intracaldera stratigraphy parallels that in the outflow facies. The Joe Loft Tuff Member is a composite ash-flow sheet that changes laterally from a simple cooling unit near the source to four distinct cooling units toward the distal end. The lowest of these units is the largest and most widespread; it is 64 m thick and contains a basal vitrophyre. Eruption of the lower unit led to the initial collapse of the caldera. The lower unit is followed upward by a 43 m middle unit, a 26 m pink-colored unit which is separated by a prominent air- fall layer, and a 31 m upper unit. \r\n\r\nThe Joe Loft Tuff Member is an alkali rhyolite with 75.85-77.31 wt. % silica and 8.06-9.32 wt. % K2O+Na2O; the agpaitic index (Na2O+ K2O/Al2O3) is .77-.98. The tuff contains about I% phenocrysts of quartz, sanidine, oligoclase, augite, apatite, zircon, sphene, biotite, and oxidized Fe-Ti oxides. The basal vitrophyre contains accessory allanite, chevkinite, and magnesiohastingsite. The main cooling units are chemically and mineralogically zoned indicating that the magma chamber restratified prior to each major eruption. Within each of the two thickest cooling units, the mineralogy changes systematically upwards; the Or content and relative volume of sanidine decreases and An content of plagioclase increases. The basal vitrophyre of the lower unit has a bulk composition that lies in the thermal trough near the minima of Or-Ab-Q at 1 kb PH2O. Microprobe analyses of feldspar and chemical modeling on experimental systems indicate that pre-eruption temperatures were near 750?C and that the temperature increased during the eruption of the cooling units. \r\n\r\nThe chemical gradients in the apatite and whole-rock data in the Joe Loft Tuff Member and the consistent mineral assemblages throughout the ash-flow cannot be explained by crystal settling. The fractionation of the Joe Lott Tuff Member appears to closer fit the model of convection-driven thermogravitational diffusion.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82891","usgsCitation":"Budding, K.E., 1982, Eruptive history, petrology, and petrogenesis of the Joe Lott Tuff Member of the Mount Belknap Volcanics, Marysvale volcanic field, west-central Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-891, 80 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82891.","productDescription":"80 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":108443,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13849.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"13849"},{"id":141340,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0891/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35694,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0891/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35695,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0891/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fe0b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Budding, Karin E.","contributorId":32164,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Budding","given":"Karin","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

One of the hotel 's supply wells delivers water to a reverse-osmosis treatment plant that produces the area 's potable water supply. Should water with increased dissolved solids reach the supply well, the costs of production of potable water will increase. The reverse-osmosis plant supply well is located about 0.4 mile south of one of the wells where increases have been monitored, and 0.8 mile southwest of the well where the most significant increases have been monitored. The direction of local ground-water movement is eastward, which reduces the probability of the supply well being affected. Honey mesquite, a phreatophyte located about 1.5 miles downgradient from the well where the most significant increases have been monitored, might be adversely affected should water with increased dissolved solids extend that far. Available data and data collected during this investigation do not indicate the source of the dissolved-solids increases. Continued ground-water-quality monitoring of existing wells and the installation of additional wells for water-quality monitoring would be necessary before the area affected by the increases, and the source and direction of movement of the water with increased dissolved solids, can be determined. Geologic hazards identified in the study area for which stipulations are recommended are active faults, mass transport, steep slopes (>10?), and steep-walled submarine canyons. Geologic hazards whose effects can be mitigated through existing technology and design and are not considered cause for stipulation are shallow faults, buried and filled channels, shallow gas, gas-charged sediments, hydrocarbon seeps, and unstable fan deposits. The Minerals Management Service has recommended that a stipulation be applied to 83 tracts where there is evidence of existing or potential sea-floor instability over a significant portion of the tract. Further data acquisition and analysis on a more detail-ed grid will be required of lessees or operators before drilling will be permitted on leases issued as a result of the sale.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr8233","usgsCitation":"Burdick, D.J., and Richmond, W.C., 1982, A summary of geologic hazards for proposed OCS oil and gas lease sale 68, southern California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-33, 41 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8233.","productDescription":"41 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140609,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35704,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35705,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35706,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35707,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35708,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35709,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35710,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35711,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35712,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35713,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35714,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":35715,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0033/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a60b5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burdick, Deborah J.","contributorId":57455,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burdick","given":"Deborah","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Richmond, William C.","contributorId":85585,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richmond","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

It underlies most of the study area and is the most extensive source of ground water in the area. Individual sandstone beds are from less than 10 to more than 150 feet thick. The cumulative thickness of sandstone is more than 200 feet throughout much of the area. The aquifer is confined by overlying Cretaceous limestone and shale, Quaternary glacial deposits and loess. The underlying confining material is shale of the Dakota Formation, undifferentiated Paleozoic age rocks, or Precambrian crystalline rock.</p><p>Water flows through the aquifer from the north-central part of the study area to the east, south and southwest. Recharge is dominantly by infiltration from the land surface through the confining materials. Discharge is to underlying Paleozoic aquifers and to the alluvium and glacial outwash deposits along the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers in the southwest part of the area. Flow components toward bedrock valleys may reflect discharge to Quaternary sand and gravel deposits in these valleys.</p><p>Pumping tests conducted in the study area indicate a narrow range of hydraulic conductivities of the Dakota aquifer, from 37 to 50 feet per day. Consequently, an average hydraulic conductivity of 40 feet per day was used to estimate the potential yield to wells completed in the aquifer. Yields of more than 250 gallons per minute can be expected throughout much of the study area and more than 1000 gallons per minute could be produced in some areas.</p><p>The quality of water from the Dakota is a calcium, magnesium, sulfate type. It is generally suitable for irrigation purposes, based on comparisons of sodium adsorption ratios and electrical conductivities. In some areas the aquifer has water with high salinity hazard that may restrict its use to irrigation of only well drained types of soil. The concentration of radium226 and other radionuclides exceed recommended limits at several sites.</p><p>The quality of water pumped from the aquifer may be altered by induced leakage from the underlying aquifers in Paleozoic age rocks if withdrawals reverse the pattern of natural flow from the Dakota into the Paleozoic aquifers. Evidence for such a reversal exists in the area around the city of LeMars.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82264","collaboration":"Prepared in Eighty-two samples representing a variety of units found at the surface show that most rocks in the Calico Hills, other than parts of the Eleana Formation, are relatively nonmagnetic. The magnetic vector of the Eleana Formation at the surface was found to point northward and downward. Remanence directions were scattered, but a remanence azimuth of 16? east of north was assigned on the basis of present-day declination. Measurements of 123 samples of the Eleana Formation from the exploratory drill hole UE25a-3 indicate that some facies are strongly magnetic. The average total magnetization of the argillite samples is 3.89 A/m (0.00389 emu). These samples have an average natural remanent inclination of 76?. Results of demagnetization demonstrated that this relatively high inclination is due, at least in part, to a soft vertical component of remanent magnetization. The magnitude of the component could not be determined. Further tests showed that the tendency to pick up a soft component of magnetism may be a function of rock type. Inhomogeneity of the Eleana argillite was probably the cause of some differences in remanence values between large and small samples from the same depth.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82536","usgsCitation":"Baldwin, M., and Jahren, C., 1982, Magnetic properties of drill core and surface samples from the Calico Hills area, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-536, ii, 32 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82536.","productDescription":"ii, 32 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141298,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0536/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35272,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0536/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db64932e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Baldwin, M.J.","contributorId":81096,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldwin","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156595,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jahren, C.E.","contributorId":6443,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jahren","given":"C.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156594,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The aquifer in Kansas underlies an area of 31,000 square miles in the western and south-central part. This aquifer is a hydraulically connected assemblage of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. Maps published at a scale of 1:500,000 show the altitude and configuration of the water table in Kansas during 1965. Groundwater moved from higher altitudes in the western part of the High Plains to lower altitudes in the eastern part at a average rate of 10 ft/mi. The upgradient flexure of water table contours along some of the valleys indicates that groundwater was discharged to the streams in those areas. S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected 5,029 km of single-channel seismic-reflection data from the Georges Bank area of the Atlantic Continental Shelf and Slope during the R/V COLUMBUS ISELIN cruise CI 7-78-2. The purpose of the cruise was to determine the location and frequency of mass sediment movement and other geologic hazards along the Continental Slope.</p><p>Navigation of the COLUMBUS ISELIN was by LORAN-C; position fixes were automatically recorded at 5-minute intervals and manually plotted and recorded at 15-minute intervals. The navigation equipment included a Northstar 6000 LORAN receiver and a Texas Instruments Silent 700 tape and paper recorder.</p><p>The seismic equipment consisted of a 40-in<sup>3</sup> airgun, a 5-in<sup>3&nbsp;</sup>airgun, a Teledyne 600-joule mnisparker, and ORE (Ocean Research Equipment Inc.) 3.5-kHz transducer. The seismic profiles obtained were recorded on paper by EPC (EPC Labs Inc.) recorders and on magnetic tape by a 7-channel analog tape recorder. Overall, the data quality is excellent, and penetration and resolution are good although in some areas, the underlying structure was obscured by rough topography.</p><p>The original records may be viewed at the USGS office in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Microfilm copies of the data may be purchased only from the National Geophysical and Solar-Terrestrial Data Center, NOAA/EDIS/NGSDC, Code D621, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80303 (Telephone: 303-497-6338).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr82607","usgsCitation":"Bailey, N.G., and Aaron, J.M., 1982, High-resolution seismic-reflection profiles from the R/V Columbus Iselin, cruise CI 7-78-2, over the continental shelf and slope in the Georges Bank area: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-607, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82607.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":141235,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259854,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0607/ofr1982607.pdf","text":"Report","size":"2.04 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1982-607"}],"contact":"<p><a href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\" data-mce-href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\">Coastal and Marine Geology Program</a><br> U.S. Geological Survey<br> 384 Woods Hole Road<br> Woods Hole, MA 02543</p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a58e4b07f02db62f285","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bailey, Norman G.","contributorId":59439,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"Norman","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156583,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Aaron, John M.","contributorId":10031,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aaron","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156582,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

It is the principal source of municipal, industrial, and agricultural water supply in south Georgia and most of Florida. The aquifer, known as the Floridan aquifer in Florida and the principal artesian aquifer in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, includes various carbonate units of Paleocene to early Miocene age that are hydraulically connected in varying degrees. Very locally, in the Brunswick, Ga., area, a thin sequence of rocks of Late Cretaceous age is part of the system. In general the aquifer consists of either one vertically continuous permeable zone or two major permeable zones separated by a less permeable unit of highly variable water-transmitting characteristics. Aquifer conditions range from unconfined to confined depending upon whether the clayey Miocene and younger rocks that form the upper confining unit have been removed by erosion.\r\n\r\nDigital model simulation shows that prior to development, most flow in the aquifer occurred in the unconfined and thinly confined areas of northwest and central Florida and southwest Georgia. Springs in these areas are visible evidence of major flow activity. Spring discharge to streams accounted for about 90 percent of the average predevelopment discharge from the regional aquifer. About 18,100 cubic feet per second left the limestone aquifer as spring flow, and 2,500 cubic feet per second discharged as diffuse upward leakage from the confined areas where the vertical head gradient was upward. Most of the 20,600 cubic feet per second recharge necessary to balance total discharge entered the limestone aquifer in the unconfined and thinly confined areas. Because the areas of greatest recharge before development were near the areas of highest discharge, flow paths were generally short. Much water went into and out of the limestone quickly. A very active shallow flow system at the expense of deep circulation has evolved in unconfined and sligptly confined spring areas. Transmissivities commonly exceed 1,000,000 feet squared per day.\r\n\r\nIn contrast, predevelopment flow in the aquifer in the tightly confined areas of southeast and coastal Georgia, far west Florida, and in south Florida was sluggish. In these areas the aquifer is overlain by several hundred feet of sand and clay, except for the outcrop areas along the updip limit of the aquifer. This thick overburden severely retards discharge from the aquifer, causing lethargic flow. Large-discharge springs are nonexistent. The south Florida and southeast Georgia segments of the flow system, which taken together occupy about 50 percent of the regional system, only accounted for slightly more than 3 percent of the predevelopment regional limestone discharge. Transmissivities are on the average lower (generally less than 250,000 feet squared per day) than those in areas of high-flow activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82905","usgsCitation":"Bush, P.W., 1982, Predevelopment flow in the Tertiary limestone aquifer, southeastern United States: A regional analysis from digital modeling: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-905, v, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82905.","productDescription":"v, 41 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":35732,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0905/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402563,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35647.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":142050,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0905/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Georgia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89,24 ], [ -89,34 ], [ -80,34 ], [ -80,24 ], [ -89,24 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67ea30","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bush, Peter W.","contributorId":57820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bush","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Maximum abundances in the altered mineralized rocks in the contact zone are 450 ppm uranium and 480 ppm thorium. Interpretation of factor analysis of the spectrochemical and delayed neutron analytical data suggests the presence of five geological factors which account for 82 percent of element covariance of 34 elements in 61 samples. The factors are identified as (1) limestone source rock reactions; (2) monzonite source rock reactions; (3) hydrothermal element group 1; (4) rare earth group; and (5) hydrothermal element group 2. The last factor effects the distribution of, primarily, beryllium, uranium, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, and secondarily, thorium, tin, and zinc; it is identified as the prime mineralization factor. \r\n\r\nThe Notch Peak intrusive area has been a tungsten producing area since before the 1940's and the location of small-scale gold placer operations.
