These projects were done in cooperation with seven State and local and nine federal agencies. State and local cooperative funding amounted to $566,123 in FY 1982 and $570,000 (projected monies) in FY 1983; Federal funding amounted to $2,083,748 in FY 1982 and $1,656,494 (projected monies) in FY 1983. Eighty-three persons were employed as of September, FY 1982--40 full time and 43 other than full time. Sixty-five persons were employed as of October, FY 1983--35 full time and 30 other than full time. In addition, the Water Resources Division maintains a project office at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. Work there is done in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, which provides most of the funding. Some Federal funds are provided for special projects. Projects other than continuing programs for collection of hydrologic data included flood-mapping studies, geothermal-resource investigations, groundwater-quality assessments, basin-and region-wide water-resource investigations , river quality-of-water monitoring studies, volcanic-ash-related studies, groundwater trends and stream gaging-program evaluations, river erosion and sediment-transport studies, water-budget and groundwater-use determinations, and a sole-source aquifer appraisal. (index map). The principal aquifer, the Ogallala F?rmat1on of :ert1ary
age, is hydraulically connected with other unconsolidated ~eposits, .
principally of Quaternary age. Alluvium and terrace dep?sits htdrau]ically
connected with the Ogallala are included in the High Pla1ns.aqu1fer in
Oklahoma. Parts of the underlying bedrock also are hydraul 1cally connected
with the Ogallala. The High Plai ns aquifer in Oklahoma has been
removed by erosion on the west exposing underlying rocks of Cretaceous
age and on the east exposing rocks of Permian age.

As part of that effort, we installed tilt networks and obtained baseline measurements at Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak, California during July 1981. At the same time, baseline electronic distance measurements (EDM) were made and fumarole surveys were conducted by other crews from CVO. Annual surveys are planned initially, with subsequent visits as conditions warrant. These geodetic and geochemical measurements supplement a program of continuous seismic monitoring of Cascade volcanoes by the USGS Office of Earthquake Studies in cooperation with local universities. \r\n\r\nOther tilt networks were established at Mount Baker in 1975 and at Mount St. Helens in 1981. EDM networks were established at Mount Baker in 1975, Mount St. Helens in 1980, and Crater Lake in 1981. Maps are based on water levels measured in wells each May to coincide with the seasonal low levels and each September to coincide with seasonal high levels. The mapped area shows 14 well fields that supplied 181.1 million gallons to municipalities on May 10, 1982. The water is withdrawn from the Floridan aquifer, the major aquifer in Florida. The effect of localized withdrawal on ground water is shown on the maps as depressions in both the potentiometric and water-table surfaces. In May 1982, ground-water levels were lower than those of September 1981. Seasonal recharge from above-average rainfall and reduced pumpage aided in the water-level recovery from record to near record levels of May 1981. In 1977 and 1978, the highest TCE concentration was found surrounding the most productive well, Haven well. Large quantities of TCE were used for degreasing between 1955 and 1965 and, so far as is known, TCE was used extensively up until 1973. Data on how, where, and when TCE got into the aquifer are lacking, but geochemical evidence and TCE analyses show a strong relation between the high TCE concentrations near Haven well and the extensive storm-drain system that underlies the parking apron and runway. The drains help recycle some of the TCE-contaminated ground water from the Haven well area.
Sources of TCE-free ground water on PAFB may exist in the northern parts and do exist in the southern parts of the main aquifer; however, in the southern part, either the ground water is probably already being used nearly to capacity (Smith and Harrison production wells) or further development might adversely affect off-base ground-water use. In the northern part, available subsurface data indicate that only relatively small yields are likely at any one site; thus, to get sustained yields comparable to that of the Haven well would probably require an unreasonable number of wells.
This study locates TCE contamination in the main PAFB aquifer and discusses three possible water-use alternatives: (I) Abandonment of Haven well, (2) treatment of Haven well water to remove TCE, and (3) treatment of a portion of Haven well water for domestic consumption and use of the remainder for nondomestic uses. Continued use of the Haven well, with treatment of all or part of its yield for TCE removal, is advantageous, both because the Haven well is a high-yield source of water and because cessation of pumping from it might allow TCE-contaminated ground water to move downgradient (southward), endangering the Smith and Harrison production wells. Continued study and monitoring of the TCE contamination would help in predicting when the contamination problem will no longer be threatening.

These reserves are recoverable from 445 studied fields under the Federal submerged lands off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. An additional 44 fields, discovered since December 31, 1979, have not been sufficiently developed to permit a reasonably accurate estimate of reserves.
Original recoverable reserves are estimated to have been 8.17 billion barrels of oil and 93.4 trillion cubic feet of gas from 461 fields in the same geographic area. Included in this number are 16 fields that are depleted and were abandoned; not included are the 44 insufficiently developed fields. Estimates were made for individual reservoirs in 355 fields and on a field-wide basis for the other 106 fields.
* The term \"oil\" as used in this report includes crude oil and condensate.

Arizona, 1977-1980","docAbstract":"As part of a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Land Management, changes in albedo (percentage of light reflected from the ground) were calculated and mapped from Landsat images for an area in northwestern Arizona for three periods: August 26, 1977, to September 3, 1979; September 3, 1979, to August 28, 1980; and August 26, 1977, to August 28, 1980. The mapped albedo changes were field checked in April 1981. Decreases in albedo were associated with increases in vegetation, primarily the flush of annual vegetation and the regrowth of vegetation in chained areas and sites of past fires. Increases in albedo were due to recent fires. \r\n\r\nContinuous monitoring of changes in albedo using current, rather than historical, Landsat images can provide the Bureau of Land Management with a means of monitoring vegetation growth, determining areas of high fire potential, and more efficiently deploying of field personnel to sites where severe changes are occuring in the quality of the land and vegetation resources. For example, an albedo change could be an indication of encroachment by an invader species. The array of constituents sampled was expanded in October 1978 at three of the original nine stations to provide quality-of-water information for streams draining an industrial area: Rocky Creek near Belmont, Hunter Creek near Belmont, and Swift Creek at Facil. Data collected at these three sites now include: major chemical constituents, six times per year: radium-226, two times per year; and trace metals, one time per year. These constituents are determined in addition to nutrients, total organic carbon, and bio-chemical oxygen demand which continue to be analyzed six times per year. All results of analyses of the water-quality samples collected from January through December 1980 remained within, or near, previously measured ranges and water-quality fluctuations were similar to those noted from data collected since 1971. A discharge equaled or exceeded about 90 percent of the time was measured at Grand Traverse Street in Flint before dye injection. Dye was injected at two locations in Flint--at Utah Dam and at Grand Traverse Street, From Utah Dam to Grand Traverse Street, the mean velocity of flow was about 0.1 foot per second; time-of-travel was 35.3 hours. From Grand Traverse Street to Highway M-13, mean velocity was about 0.7 foot per second; time-of-travel was 78.8 hours. Time-of-travel for the reach between Utah Dam and Highway M-13 was thus 114 hours.
