Multiple-regression techniques were used to define the relationship between a suite of basin and climatic characteristics and flood peaks in three flood-frequency regions at a total of 95 sites. Station flood-frequency data were computed following guidelines in Bulletin I7A of the U.S. Water Resources Council. The frequency analyses are based upon weighted skew values, and adjustments for high and low outliers, and historic peak data. Regression equations for estimation of peak discharges for 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.04, 0.02, and 0.01 exceedance probabilities are provided for ungaged sites. An improved sample of flood peaks and gaging stations and the definition of three flood-frequency regions reduced the standard error of estimate by about 5 percent over those for the 1977 relations. Included in this analysis were the synthetic flood-frequency data at eight sites computed using historic climatic data and 10 parameters optimized by calibration of the U.S. Geological Survey's rainfall-runoff model with storm data observed over II years. The equations are applicable to streams unaffected by regulation where the usable manmade storage is less than 4.5 million cubic feet per square mile, or by diversions or urbanization. The equations are restricted to sites where the basin indices are within a specified range outside of eastern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes or Nantucket Counties. In these areas, the available data do not adequately define the influence of high infiltration and storage capacities of drainage basins on floodflows.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80676","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Its stratigraphic position above eolian sand and below a large barchanoid dune indicates deposition during an exceptional period of pluvial climate in an otherwise arid sand desert. Radiocarbon-dated carbonate lake beds found in similar stratigraphic settings in other parts of the Nafud suggest that the diatomite was deposited in the late Pleistocene epoch sometime between 32,000 and 20,000 years ago. Diatomite of the same pluvial episode has also been found in the Afar region of Ethiopia. \r\n\r\nFour samples of the diatomite were analyzed for major chemical components and 32 minor and trace elements. Two of the samples appeared to be representative of the lake bed. These samples contained about 85 percent SiO2, 2.34 percent Fe2O3, 1 4 percent Al2O3, and 8.27 percent ignition loss, with only traces of CaO, P2O5, MgO, Na2O, and TiO2. The high content of silica and low contents of alumina, iron oxide, lime, and other constituents indicate low contamination. Analyses of samples from the two atypical units indicate a small amount of contamination, probably clay or mica, in the basal unit and addition of iron oxide and carbonate by ground water in an isolated green-colored unit. Chemically the Bi'r Hayzan diatomite compares favorably with commercial deposits from other parts of the world. Low bulk densities of 0.64 g/cm3 (30-40 lbs/ft3) and an average porosity of 63 percent for five samples also suggest the deposit is of industrial grade. \r\n\r\nFurther studies are recommended to determine: (1) the size and extent of the deposit and (2) the suitability of the diatomite for commercial applications. As means to these ends, electrical-resistivity surveys following winter rains are suggested to determine both the extent and thickness of the lake bed beneath the overlying sand dunes. A complete species identification of the diatom association and further laboratory testing of physical properties of the diatomite also should be made. Further exploration in the Nafud is recommended to locate other possible diatomite deposits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821046","usgsCitation":"Whitney, J., and Gettings, M.E., 1982, Preliminary geological investigation of the Bir Hayzan diatomite deposit, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a section on selected physical properties and implications for future geophysical exploration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1046, 27 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821046.","productDescription":"27 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144764,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1046/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39512,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1046/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db673b91","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Whitney, J.W.","contributorId":27437,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitney","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gettings, M. The water is hard or very hard, averaging 170 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. The average concentrations of these constituents and hardness are least during late summer and early fall after periods of sustained high inflow.</p>\n<p>Thermal stratification begins to develop in Belton Lake in late February or early March. The water usually is stratified into three fairly distinct layers by early June, and stratification usually persists until September or October. Thermal stratification and seasonal variations in the concentrations of dissolved constituents in inflow result in stratification of the principal dissolved constituents. Dissolved solids in water at the surface of deep sites during summer differ from those at the bottom by about 40 milligrams per liter. Thermal stratification also results in significant seasonal and areal variations in dissolved oxygen, dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus.</p>\n<p>Oxygen used in the oxidation of dead organisms and other organic material near the bottom of the lake is not replaced during periods of summer stagnation. Consequently, water below depths of 35 to 40 feet (10.7 to 12.2 meters) usually contains less than 1.0 milligram per liter of dissolved oxygen during these periods.</p>\n<p>Water near the surface at most sites in the lake throughout the year usually contains less than 30 micrograms per liter of dissolved iron and 20 micrograms per liter of dissolved manganese. Reducing conditions during periods of summer stagnation result in tile dissolution of iron and manganese from the sediments in deep areas of the lake. The concentrations of both constituents are greatest near the bottom at site Ac, a deep site near Belton Dam. Iron concentrations at this site during the summer have ranged from 0 to 600 micrograms per liter and have averaged about 290 micrograms per liter; manganese concentrations have ranged from 0 to 540 micrograms per liter and have averaged about 320 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>Concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest at deep sites during periods of summer stagnation when decay of aquatic organisms and chemical reduction of bottom sediments release the constituents to the water. The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus in the bottom stratum of water at site A c during the summer average about 0.75 milligram per liter of nitrogen and 0.10 milligram per liter of phosphorus. The concentrations of these constituents in the surface stratum at site A C during the summer average about 0.02 milligram per liter of nitrogen and 0.01 milligram per liter of phosphorus.</p>\n<p>The maximum concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides or their degradation products detected in bottom sediments collected from the lake during four lake surveys included 1.1 micrograms per kilogram of DDT, 3.0 micrograms per kilogram of DDD, 11 micrograms per kilogram of DDE, and 2 micrograms per kilogram of chlordane.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr82650","usgsCitation":"Mendieta, H., and Pate, D.L., 1982, Water quality of Belton Lake, central Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-650, Report: vi, 70 p.; Plate: 10.52 x 16.63 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82650.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 70 p.; Plate: 10.52 x 16.63 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":38160,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0650/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38161,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0650/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144093,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0650/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e478fe4b07f02db48a09f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mendieta, H.B.","contributorId":38965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mendieta","given":"H.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161164,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pate, Dale L.","contributorId":55007,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pate","given":"Dale","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161165,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Highest levels of the potentiometric surface, 59 to 60 feet above sea level, were measured near the outcrop-subcrop of the aquifer in topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. The surface slopes to the southeast to above sea level along much of the western shore of Chesapeake Bay. Three separate, distinct, and extensive cones of depression have developed in the potentiometric surface around the well fields of the city of Annapolis-Broadneck Peninsula area, town of Waldorf, and Chalk Point. Earlier investigations into both occurrences concluded that the mechanism of sink development consisted of the gradual stoping of poorly supported brine-gallery roof rock to the near surface with subsequent surface collapse. A more recent study attempted to describe the mechanism of sink development in terms of the geometry of a cylindrical chimney formed by stoping of roof rock, the height of a cavity at depth, the depth of overlying rock, and the bulking ratio of the rubble formed during stoping. \r\n\r\nPersons with extensive experience in solution mining in the Windsor-Detroit area have expressed doubt that the stoping mechanism could fully explain the development of these sinks. Further, they have proposed that the relatively shallow (300-ft-deep) Sylvania Sandstone, in this case, may be responsible for the sinks by a secondary undermining mechanism to be examined in this paper. The mechanism involves downwarping of the beds overlying the salt cavity and development of a shallower cavity in the Sylvania Sandstone by downward migration of cohesionless sand grains from the Sylvania through openings in the disturbed rock to the lower cavity. This study indicates that under natural conditions the Sylvania will not migrate, even in the presence of large underground water flows because the sandstone possesses some cohesion throughout its depth. However, further investigation has formulated a mechanism that could allow the Sylvania Sandstone to loose its cohesion in response to high horizontal stresses. These stresses could be the result of deformation that accompanies general subsidence and (or) of past geologic processes.\r\n\r\nIncluded in this study were experimental and analytical investigations. As determined by uniaxial and triaxial testing, the Sylvania Sandstone in the Detroit area has been shown to have low compressive strength. In addition, it exhibits an explosive type failure whereby over 50 percent of the sample is reduced to loose granular sand. As a result of these characteristics, the Sylvania Sandstone can loose its cohesion when subjected to high horizontal stresses. \r\n\r\nEfforts at mechanically modeling the Sylvania were made to account for the measurements and observations. Linear arch theory was used for an elastic analysis. Linear arch theory predicts two modes of failure: (1) arch crushing, a compressive failure of the upper portion of the arch due to compressive stresses exceeding the compressive strength of the material, and (2) arch collapse, a sagging of the beds due to compressive strains which reduce the arch line to a length less than the original arch length. The arch crushing mode of failure would then yield the loose granular sand as observed in laboratory testing. Arch collapse would simply result in bed sagging without granulation of the sandstone. Arch collapse is favored by thin-bedded material while arch crushing is favored by thick-bedded material. Arch crushing seems to be a likely mode of failure for the Windsor-Detroit sinks. \r\n\r\nIt is believed that after a crushing failure the sand-water slurry (specific gravity 1.2) which exceeds the density of the cavity brine will migrate downward through cracks and open joints eventually reaching the practically limitless open spaces of the rubble column and salt cavity. As the extent of the cavity within the Sylvania increases in depth and width because of sand migration, a critical span will be reached where the immediately overlying upper Sylvania and the overlying Detroit River Dolomite will fail. The collapse will allow a path for the approximately 100 ft of clay to collapse, resulting in a sink as the surface manifestation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82297","usgsCitation":"Stump, D., Nieto, A., and Ege, J., 1982, An alternative hypothesis for sink development above salt cavities in the Detroit area: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-297, 65 p., ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82297.","productDescription":"65 p., ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142525,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0297/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39188,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0297/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685bad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stump, Daniel","contributorId":35318,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stump","given":"Daniel","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nieto, A.S.","contributorId":30629,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nieto","given":"A.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ege, J. FLOWCHART centers each element or block of text that it processes on one of a set of (imaginary) vertical lines. It can enclose a text block in a rectangle, circle or other selected figure. It can draw a 'line connecting the midpoint of any side of any figure with the midpoint of any side of any other figure and insert an arrow pointing in the direction of flow. It can write 'yes' or 'no' next to the line joining two figures. \r\n\r\nFLOWCHART creates flowcharts using some basic plotting subroutine* which permit plots to be generated interactively and inspected on a Tektronix compatible graphics screen or plotted in a deferred mode on a Houston Instruments 42' pen plotter. The size of the plot, character set and character height in inches are inputs to the program. Plots generated using the pen plotter can be up to 42' high--the larger size plots being directly usable as visual aids in a talk. \r\n\r\nFLOWCHART centers each block of text on an imaginary column line. (The number of columns and column width are specified as input.) The midpoint of the longest line of text within the block is defined to be the center of the block and is placed on the column line. The spacing of individual words within the block is not altered when the block is positioned. \r\n\r\nThe program writes the first block of text in a designated column and continues placing each subsequent block below the previous block in the same column. A block of text may be placed in a different column by specifying the number of the column and an earlier block of text with which the new block is to be aligned. If block zero is given as the earlier block, the new text is placed in the new column continuing down the page below the previous block. Optionally a column and number of inches from the top of the page may be given for positioning the next block of text. \r\n\r\nThe program will normally draw one of five types of figure to enclose a block of text: a rectangle, circle, diamond, eight sided figure or figure with parallel sides and rounded ends. It can connect the figure with a line to the preceding figure, and place an arrow pointing toward the second figure. Text blocks not in sequence can also be connected and 'yes' or 'no' written next to any line to indicate branching. \r\n\r\nFigure 1 illustrates the various types of figures that can be drawn, spacings, connecting lines and the like.\r\n\r\n* The plotting package employed is Buplot available on the VAX and PDP-1170 computers at the USGS Office of Earthquake Studies, Golden, Colo. Calls to the plotting subroutines must be adjusted if some other plotting package is used.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82999","usgsCitation":"Bender, B., 1982, FLOWCHART; a computer program for plotting flowcharts: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-999, 21 p., ill. ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82999.","productDescription":"21 p., ill. ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140444,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0999/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35376,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0999/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8aef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bender, Bernice","contributorId":38986,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bender","given":"Bernice","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156746,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Mounting problems encountered with smectite-rich samples can be resolved by using minimal sample and partial air-drying of the clay film before transfer to a glass slide. Samples containing small quantities of clay can produce useful oriented specimens if Teflon masks having more restrictive areas are inserted above the membrane filter during clay deposition. The eastern Snake River Plain is a structural basin which has been filled with thin basaltic lava flows, rhyolitic deposits, and interbedded sediments. These rocks form an extensive ground-water reservoir known as the Snake River Plain aquifer. \r\n\r\nSix wells were drilled and two existing wells were deepened at the INEL from 1969 through 1974. Interpretation of data from the drilling program confirms that the subsurface is dominated by basalt flows interbedded with layers of sediment, cinders, and silicic volcanic rocks. \r\n\r\nWater levels in the wells show cyclic seasonal fluctuations of maximum water levels in winter and minimum water levels in mid-summer. Water levels in three wells near the Big Lost River respond to changes in recharge to the Snake River Plain aquifer from the Big Lost River. Measured water levels in multiple piezometers in one well indicate increasing pressure heads with depth. A marked decline in water levels in the wells since 1977 is attributed to a lack of recharge to the Snake River Plain aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82644","usgsCitation":"Goldstein, F., and Weight, W., 1982, Subsurface information from eight wells drilled at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, southeastern Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-644, v, 34 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82644.","productDescription":"v, 34 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141609,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0644/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36794,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0644/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db6997a8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goldstein, F.J.","contributorId":71975,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldstein","given":"F.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Weight, W.D.","contributorId":81906,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weight","given":"W.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
