Three diamond drill holes intersected base-metal sulfides, which are present both as conformable layers in Precambrian tuffaceous volcanic rocks and as fracture fillings, irregularly shaped masses, disseminations, and clots in intensely hydrothermally altered and brecciated fault zones. The sulfides probably formed through volcanic processes in a shallow-marine environment and subsequently were greatly modified by tectonism and hydrothermal activity. \r\n\r\nDrill hole F.G.-1 intersected sparse base and precious metal minerals along a length of 30 m; several narrow, isolated zones contain as much as 22 grams per metric ton (g/t) silver, 1.25 percent copper, and 3.10 percent zinc. Drill hole F.G.-2 intersected low-grade base and precious metal minerals along a length of 50 m. Within this zone, a 10-m interval contains an average of 0.15 g/t gold, 10.7 g/t silver, and 0.86 percent zinc. Drill hole F.G.-3 cut commercial-grade base and precious metal minerals in a 3.55-m interval that contains an average of 20.06 g/t gold, 32.75 g/t silver, and 6.28 percent zinc. \r\n\r\nAdditional exploration, including drilling and laboratory studies, is recommended to further define potential tonnages of base and precious metals intersected in drill hole F.G.-3 and to learn more about their genesis and mineral form. \r\n\r\nArsenic and antimony are locally abundant in both drillcore and surface samples. Because of its weathering characteristics, mobility, and association with precious metals, arsenic commonly is a pathfinder for gold. Approximately 1,100 splits of surface samples collected in the Farah Garan area are stored at the Directorate General of Mineral Resources-U. S. Geological Survey chemical laboratory in Jiddah, and any further exploration should include assaying these samples for arsenic and antimony by wet-chemical analysis ?","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82942","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., and Mawad, M.M., 1982, Drilling results at the Farah Garan ancient mine, southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-942, iii, 47 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82942.","productDescription":"iii, 47 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144477,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38969,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38970,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38971,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38972,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a5ee4b07f02db633e10","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Charles W.","contributorId":41431,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162727,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mawad, Mustafa M.","contributorId":43779,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mawad","given":"Mustafa","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162728,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

NARI was used to determine network design strategies that would maximize the value of additional data. Value of data was measured as the decrease in the probable true standards error of regional regression equations. NARI indicated that no significant decrease in regression error can be achieved by the collection of additional data and that better models should be sought. No major modifications to NARI are necessary to make it widely applicable. The Cost-Effectiveness Procedure was used to determine optimal network operation strategies. It showed network uncertainty can be reduced when six- or one-visit per year minimum constraints are in force. Sensitivity to various cost factors was examined. Attempts to model networks that included sites for collection of groundwater and water-quality data were unsuccessful. N., long 50? E.) north to near the southern border of the neutral zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (about lat 28? N., long 48? E.), sabkhah-associated brines form either by solar evaporation of near-surface ground water or by dissolution of previously precipitated saline minerals in the subsurface. Most sabkhah-associated brines have evolved from fresher ground water by the process of solar evaporation. One of the major controls of sulfate, calcium, and bicarbonate concentrations in brines is equilibrium reactions of these ions with authigenic minerals in sabkhah sediments. Although equilibrium reactions also provide some control of concentrations of magnesium, potassium, sodium, and chlorine, the concentrations of these elements in brines are controlled primarily by the degree to which the solutions have evaporated. \r\n\r\nSalt for industrial use in the Eastern Province is currently supplied from the Ra's al Qurayyah and Aba al Hamam bedded salt deposits, both of which are naturally exposed. At Jayb Uwayyid, a bedded salt deposit approximately 3.5 m below the sabkhah surface is not currently exploited. \r\n\r\nExcept on a small scale, brines in the Eastern Province are not being utilized, either directly or for the production of salt. The Jayb Uwayyid deposit has some potential for industrial utilization of brine and salt, and further exploration for this type of salt deposit is probably warranted.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82594","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.L., 1982, Reconnaissance investigation of evaporites and brines of the Eastern Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-594, ii, 34 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82594.","productDescription":"ii, 34 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144523,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0594/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39006,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0594/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39007,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0594/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ce4b07f02db626bc9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, C. The BASIC programs offer several advantages over previously available FORTRAN programs. They can be executed on a desk-top microcomputer at or near the field site, allowing the investigator to assess the quality of the data and make decisions on the need for additional testing while the crew is still in the field. Also, data input is much simpler than with currently available FORTRAN programs; either English or SI units can be used; and standard deviations of the principal stresses are computed as well as those of the geographic components.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82489","usgsCitation":"Smith, W.K., 1982, Two BASIC computer programs for the determination of in situ stresses using the CSIRO hollow inclusion stress cell and the USBM borehole deformation gage: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-489, iii, 44 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82489.","productDescription":"iii, 44 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143672,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0489/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39030,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0489/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db6972b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, W. About 100 surface-rock samples, three borehole gamma-gamma logs, and one borehole gravity study provide excellent density control. A linear increase in density of 0.26 g/cm3 per km is indicated in the thick tuff sequences. This steady increase of density within the tuff sequences makes the density contrast across the basal contact of the tuff the only strong source of gravity fluctuations. Isostatic and 2.0-g/cm3 Bouguer corrections were applied to the observed gravity values to remove deep-crust-related regional gradients and topographic effects, respectively. The resulting residual-gravity plot shows significant gravity anomalies that correlate closely with the structures inferred from drill-hole and surface geologic studies.

Gravity highs over the three Paleozoic rock outcrops within the study area--Bare Mountain, the Calico Hills, and the Striped Hills--served as reference points for the gravity models. The Bare Mountain gravity high, which peaks at 48 mGal, connects with a larger gravity high over the Funeral Mountains to the south; together, these highs may result from a continuous block of mildly metamorphosed Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks stretching from the east edge of Death Valley to Bare Mountain. The Calico Hills gravity high appears more likely to originate from a northeast-trending remanent topographic high of buried Paleozoic rocks rather than from an isolated structural dome. This buried ridge may extend southwestward beneath Busted Butte, 5 km southeast of the proposed repository, where 2 1/2- and 3dimensional modeling indicates that the pre-Cenozoic rocks may be less than 1,000 m deep.

At least 3,000 m of tuff fills a large steep-sided depression in the prevolcanic rocks beneath Yucca Mountain and Crater Flat. The gravity low and thick tuff section probably lie within a large collapse area comprising the Crater Flat-Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon caldera complexes. Gravity lows in Crater Flat itself are thought to coincide with the source areas of the Prow Pass Member, the Bullfrog Member, and the unnamed member of the Crater Flat Tuff. The study was based on a geochemical-geostatistical survey in which 700 stream sediment samples were collected and analyzed for 25 elements. Geochemical results were interpreted by statistical processing which included factor, discriminant, multiple regression and characteristic analysis. \r\n\r\nThe major deposit types evaluated were massive sulfide-base metal, sedimentary and magmatic uranium, thorium vein, magmatic segregation, and carbonatite related deposits. Results of the single element data and multivariate geostatistical analysis indicate that limited potential exists for base metal mineralization near the Horseshoe, El Plomo, and Green Mountain Mines. Thirty areas are considered to be anomalous with regard to one or more of the geochemical parameters evaluated during this study. The evaluation of carbonatite related mineralization was restricted due to the lack of geochemical data specific to this environment.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Ten wells were installed adjacent to and downgradient from these sites in the shallow water-table aquifer. Water samples were collected from these 10 wells and from two other wells in the shallow water-table aquifer. Most wells were sampled twice -- initially in the early summer when water levels were high and again in the fall when water levels were low. Other wells were sampled only once in either the summer or fall. The water was analyzed for common constituents, selected trace constituents, and selected organic compounds. The system consists of three programs: FILER, TRAVERSER, and PLOTTER. A control point is a shot point with velocity analysis or a shot point at or near a well with velocity check-shot survey. Reflection time to and code number of seismic horizons are filed by digitizing tablet from record sections. TRAVERSER starts at a point of geologic control and, in traversing to another, parallels seismic events, records loss of horizons by onlap and truncation, and stores reflection time for geologic horizons at traversed shot points. TRAVERSER is basically a phantoming procedure. \r\n\r\nPermafrost thickness and velocity variations, buried canyons with low-velocity fill, and error in seismically derived velocity cause velocity anomalies that complicate depth mapping. Two depths to the top of the pebble is based shale are computed for each control point. One depth, designated Zs on seismically derived velocity. The other (Zw) is based on interval velocity interpolated linearly between wells and multiplied by interval time (isochron) to give interval thickness. Z w is computed for all geologic horizons by downward summation of interval thickness. \r\n\r\nUnknown true depth (Z) to the pebble shale may be expressed as\r\n\r\nZ = Zs + es and Z = Zw + ew\r\n\r\nwhere the e terms represent error. Equating the two expressions gives the depth difference \r\n\r\nD = Zs + Zw = ew + es\r\n\r\nA plot of D for the top of the pebble shale is readily contourable but smoothing is required to produce a reasonably simple surface. \r\n\r\nSeismically derived velocity used in computing Zs includes the effect of velocity anomalies but is subject to some large randomly distributed errors resulting in depth errors (es). Well-derived velocity used in computing Zw does not include the effect of velocity anomalies, but the error (ew) should reflect these anomalies and should be contourable (non-random). The D surface as contoured with smoothing is assumed to represent ew, that is, the depth effect of variations in permafrost thickness and velocity and buried canyon depth. \r\n\r\nEstimated depth (Zest) to each geologic horizon is the sum of Z w for that horizon and a constant e w as contoured for the pebble shale, which is the first highly continuous seismic horizon below the zone of anomalous velocity. Results of this 'depthing' procedure are compared with those of Tetra Tech, Inc., the subcontractor responsible for geologic and geophysical interpretation and mapping.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821054","usgsCitation":"Payne, T.G., 1982, Use of microcomputer in mapping depth of stratigraphic horizons in National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1054, ii, 42 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821054.","productDescription":"ii, 42 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144042,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1054/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38467,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1054/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d5e4b07f02db5ddeb7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Payne, Thomas G.","contributorId":60653,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Payne","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161716,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the salt-dome basin the Tokio Formation and Brownstown Marl (Austin aquifer in this report), and Nacatoch Sand of Late Cretaceous age and the Wilcox Group, Carrizo Sand, Sparta Sand, and Cockfield Formation of Tertiary age contain regional aquifers within the maximum potential repository depth of 3,000 feet. The Cretaceous units contain saltwater throughout the basin. The Tertiary units contain freshwater to varying distances downdip from outcrop areas in the basin. Natural flow directions and rates of movement of groundwater have been changed in the salt-dome basin by the withdrawl of freshwater and by the injection of wastes (principally oil-field brines) into saline aquifers. Except for the Sparta aquifer, ground-water flow directions are not well known because of a lack of potentiometric data. A regional test-drilling program, to collect the data needed to document concepts of the flow system and to quantify inputs to the planned ground-water flow model, has been proposed. The Sparta aquifer is being modeled because data are available for the unit. As regional test drilling provides data on other units, will be added to the model developed for the Sparta aquifer.
