The purpose of the study was to gain an overview of the morphology of large areas of the Continental Slope and upper Continental Rise off the eastern ·united States. Sidescan-sonar and single-channel seismic-reflection data were collected along the tracklines. The ship's position. was monitored using LORAN_C and satellite navigation techniques.

The sidescan data were collected using the !OS-developed Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic, Mark II (GLORIA II) system. GLORIA was operated at either a 20-second or 40-second sweep, giving maximum slant-range distances of 15 or 30 kilometers, respectively, to each side of the towed fish. The sidescan data were collected on graphic recorders and analog tapes. The tapes were played onto photographic paper in a facsimile machine; then these prints were photographically stretched to produce approximately isometric images .. The images were not corrected for slant-range distortion. Mosaics at a scale of 1:250,000 (Mercator projection) were made from the photographic images.

The seismic· data consist of 40-in3 airgun and 10-kHz echo-sounder profiles. The airgun data were recorded on EPC recorders at both 8- and 4- second sweep rates. The 10-kHz echo-sounder data were recorded on a wet-paper recorder at a 2-second sweep rate.

Approximately 4,820 km of seismic and sonar-data wera collected from four areas of interest and along the lines connecting those areas. Area 1 includes the Continental Slope and upper Rise seaward of Georges Bank, between Northeast Channel and Alvin Canyon. Numerous lines were run here, resulting in approximately 2,500 km of seismic data and complete and overlapping GLORIA coverage of the area. A similar survey, consisting of approximately 1 2 200 km of trackline, was run in area 2, which includes the Continental Slope and upper Rise seaward of the middle Atlantic states between Hudson Canyon and Baltimore Canyon. A single line, 250 km long, was run through area 3 along the base of the Continental Slope from Cape Hatteras to latitude 33°N. off North and South Carolina. Two parallel lines, totaling 870 km, were run through area 4 along the Blake Escarpment, from the Blake Spur south to latitude 27°40'N. One line was run along the top of the escarpment and the other was run along the base of the escarpment.

All the data can be studied at the U.S. Geological Survey offices in Woods Hole, MA 02543. Microfilm copies of the sidescan-monitor record as well as the airgun and 10-kHz profiles can be purchased only from the National Geophysical Data Center, NOAA, Code E64, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80303 (303/497-6338). Reports to the Court, not less frequently than annually, with copies to the Governors and the Mayor, were stipulated. Water-supply conditions at the beginning of the year were under a status of emergency resulting from drought, which had been declared by the Delaware River Basin Commission. With the filling of the reservoirs, the emergency was lifted April 27. Runoff of Delaware River at Montague, New Jersey, was 19 percent below median during the year as compared to 28 percent below median the previous year. By November, with reservoir storage again declining, reductions in both diversions and releases were imposed. To conserve supplies, reductions were effected on November 13 limiting New York City diversions at 680 mgd and New Jersey to 85 mgd, and the required discharge at Montague was targeted at 1,655 cfs. Water quality of the Delaware River and Estuary was monitored on a continuous basis at six sites for most of the year and on a monthly basis at ten sites to accurately locate the salt front. Data were assembled to define, on a reconnaissance level, water-quality conditions in major aquifers and to develop an understanding of factors that affected conditions in 1978 and could affect future ground-water quality. Water-quality characteristics determined include specific conductance, pH, water temperature, major dissolved cations, major dissolved anions, and coliform bacteria. Concentrations of hardness, nitrite plus nitrate, coliform bacteria, dissolved solids, sulfate, chloride, fluoride , iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium or bicarbonate exceed public drinking water regulation limits or were anomalously high in some water samples. Highly mineralized ground water probably is due to the natural composition of the aquifers and not to surface contamination. Concentrations of coliform bacteria that exceed public drinking water limits and anomalously high dissolved nitrite-plus-nitrite concentrations are from 15- to 20-year old irrigation wells in heavily irrigated or more densely populated areas of the valleys. Ground-water quality and quantity in most of the study area are sufficient to meet current (1978) population and economic demands. Ground water in all valleys is characterized by significant concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate plus carbonate ions. Variations in the general trend of ground-water composition (especially in the Lemhi Valley) probably are most directly related to variability in aquifer lithology and proximity of sampling site to source of recharge. Inclusions have been measured in minerals from four of the five stages of mineralization previously recognized at Creede. The few inclusions of fluids depositing rhodochrosite (A-stage, earliest in the paragenesis) yield Th and salinity values more similar to those of the low-temperature (average Th 217?C) fluids forming some of the much later fluorite (C-stage) than to any of the other fluids. Th measurements on A-stage quartz range from 192?C to 263?C and average 237?C. The early, fine-grained, B-stage sphalerites yielded Th of 214 to 241?C and salinities of 6.1 to 10.2 wt. % eq. \r\n\r\nD-stage sphalerite (late in the paragenesis) has been studied in detail (growth-zone by growth-zone) for several localities along the OH vein and reveals a generally positive correlation among Th, salinity and iron content of the host sphalerite. The deposition of D-stage sphalerite was characterized by repeated cycling through different regions of salinity/Th space, as Th and salinity generally decreased with time. Seventeen salinity-Th measurements were made on D-stage sphalerite from one locality on the Bulldog Mountain vein system, which, like the OH vein, is one of four major ore-producing vein systems at Creede. These data suggest a lower Th for a given salinity fluid from sphalerite on the Bulldog Mountain vein than on the OH vein. The very high values of Th for some quartz samples (mostly D-stage) are believed to be a result of the trapping of both gas and liquid from a boiling fluid in the upper levels of the vein system. Boiling of fluids depositing D-stage quartz is indicated by the presence of steam inclusions in quartz and the extreme variability of Th values measured on quartz. The pressure was low (< 125 kg/cm 2) throughout ore deposition. \r\n\r\nThree major growth zones in D-stage sphalerite are recognized throughout the OH vein. Deposition of the first major zone began from fluids having intermediate salinities and temperatures (7.8-9.2 wt. % eq., 240?C) but the characteristics of the fluids oscillated after that, ranging from 7.2 to 10.1 wt. % eq. and from 225?C to 270?C. Deposition of the second major, most Fe-rich zone began with the hottest, most saline fluids present during D-stage mineralization (. 270?C, 10.5-12.5 wt. % eq., 3 mole % FeS in sphalerite). The fluid then oscillated with respect to Th and salinity (213-274?C, 5.2-12.5 wt. % eq.) but showed a general decrease in both with time. Deposition of the youngest major zone began with a very Fe-poor sphalerite (0.25-0.75 mole % FeS), from the least saline, coolest fluids (5-6.5 wt. % eq., 200-212?C) and ended with a trend of increasing temperature at approximately constant salinity.\r\n\r\nThe fluid-inclusion data can best be explained by a mixing model involving at least two fluids--one hot and saline, the other cool and fresher. Sudden changes in the mixing ratio, presumably from changes in the plumbing, punctuated long periods of remarkably uniform conditions of ore fluid flow and deposition. The effects of other processes such as convection and heat exchange with wall rocks must have been superimposed on this simple mixing model, however. In contrast to an earlier interpretation, several aspects of the inclusion data may be interpreted to suggest exceedingly slow ore deposition. Work in progress may resolve some of these ambiguities and refine","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82313","usgsCitation":"Woods, T., Roedder, E., and Bethke, P.M., 1982, Fluid-inclusion data on samples from Creede, Colorado, in relation to mineral paragenesis: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-313, 77 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82313.","productDescription":"77 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143786,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0313/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39610,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0313/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de77a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Woods, T.L.","contributorId":6052,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woods","given":"T.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163620,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Roedder, Edwin","contributorId":25571,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Roedder","given":"Edwin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bethke, P. In 1975, the population of the area was about 48,000. Water use averaged 11.4 million gallons per day; about half was pumped from wells and half from streams.

The area receives 57 inches of precipitation per year on the average. Much of this water enters the surficial sand aquifer, seeps to streams, or enters the underlying water-bearing zone of the upper confining unit and the Floridan aquifer.

The water-bearing zone of the upper confining unit is used for rural domestic supplies and is also important because the water it stores is a source of recharge to the underlying Floridan aquifer.

The Floridan aquifer underlies all of the Ochlockonee River area and, except for the city of Quincy, is the principal source of municipal water supply. Well yields range from as little as 20 gallons per minute in Gadsden County to as much as 4,500 gallons per minute in Leon County. The transmissivity of the Floridan aquifer ranges from about 170 feet squared per day in the southern part of the area to 5,100 feet squared per day in the northern part. Storage coefficients calculated from two aquifer tests are 2 x 10-4 and 2.6 x 10-4. At Tallahassee, directly east of the Ochlockonee River, transmissivity is as high as 130,000 feet squared per day. The Floridan aquifer is recharged by downward leakage of water from the surficial sand aquifer and from the water-bearing zone of the upper confining unit. The Floridan aquifer is also recharged directly by rainfall in northern Leon County and in southern Georgia where it is near or at land surface. Ground water moves toward the southeast from the potentiometric high in southwestern Gadsden County and south from Leon County toward Wakulla Springs, located about 10 miles south of Tallahassee. The potentiometric surface of the upper part of the Floridan aquifer ranges from about 50 feet higher than that of the middle and lower part of the Floridan aquifer in southwestern Gadsden County to about 10 feet higher near Midway in eastern Gadsden County. The aquifer discharge in the basin area is by wells and by natural discharge through seeps and springs along the Ochlockonee River and at Ochlockonee Bay.

Water levels in the Floridan aquifer fluctuate in response to seasonal and long-term variations in rainfall. Hydrographs do not show evidence of any long-term water-level declining trend.

Saline water (more than 1,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids) occurs naturally within the Floridan aquifer throughout the Ochlockonee River area at depths ranging from 200 to 600 feet below sea level. The depth below which dissolved solids in water exceed 500 milligrams per liter in the Havana area ranges from 200 to 250 feet below sea level; in the Quincy area, from 400 to 450 feet below; and in the Greensboro area, from 200 to 250 feet below.

Concentrations of dissolved solids in water pumped from wells tapping the Floridan aquifer in the Ochlockonee River area range from 60 to 1,370 milligrams per liter; chloride from 0 to 630 milligrams per liter; sulfate from 0.0 to 280 milligrams per liter; and fluoride from 0.0 to 1.3 milligrams per liter.

Streamflow originating in the Ochlockonee River area in Florida averages about 1,000 million gallons per day; minimum discharge during dry periods is about 285 million gallons per day. Stream yields range from 0.90 to 2.62 cubic feet per second per square mile. Quincy Creek, at State Highway 267 at Quincy, the primary source of water for the city of Quincy, yields an average flow of 19 million gallons per day, has a 7-day 10-year low flow of 2.8 million gallons per day, and contains water of acceptable quality. The chemical quality of most streams in the basin is acceptable for most uses. Dissolved-solids concentration is generally less than 135 milligrams per liter; pH ranges from 5.3 to 7.3 units; color from 20 to 90 platinum-cobalt units; and turbidity from 3 to 85 Jackson turbidity units. Variations in chloride concentration in water from the Ochlockonee River (5.2 to 140 milligrams per liter) are influenced by discharge of food processing waste and municipal sewage plant effluent to the river.

The three large lakes in the basin range from 4,000 to 7,000 acres in surface area. All are now used primarily for recreation. Dissolved-solids concentrations of water from the lakes range from less than 20 to 50 milligrams per liter. Approximately 275 coal thickness measurements obtained from drill hole data are evenly distributed throughout the area. The Cache coal and associated beds are in the Paleocene Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation. The depth from the surface to the Cache bed ranges from 269 to 1,257 feet. The thickness of the coal is as much as 31 feet, but in places the Cache coal bed is absent. Comparisons between hand-drawn and computer-generated isopach maps show minimal differences. Total coal resources calculated by computer show the bed to contain 2,316 million short tons or about 6.7 percent more than the hand-calculated figure of 2,160 million short tons.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82402","usgsCitation":"Schneider, G.B., Crowley, S., and Carey, M., 1982, Application of computer graphics to generate coal resources of the Cache coal bed, Recluse geologic model area, Campbell County, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-402, 17 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82402.","productDescription":"17 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142357,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0402/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38801,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0402/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67aaac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schneider, G. S. Geological Survey. The database was designed and created for input to the Geologic Retrieval and Synopsis Program (GRASP) to allow selective retrievals of information pertaining to location of data, data format, cruise, geographical bounds and collection dates of data. This information is then used to locate the stored data for administrative purposes or further processing. \r\n\r\nDatabase utilization is divided into three distinct operations. The first is the inventorying of the data and the updating of the database, the second is the retrieval of information from the database, and the third is the graphic display of the geographical boundaries to which the retrieved information pertains.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr82397","usgsCitation":"Paskevich, V.F., 1982, MRNIDX - Marine Data Index: Database Description, Operation, Retrieval, and Display: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-397, iii, 57 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82397.","productDescription":"iii, 57 p.","costCenters":[{"id":680,"text":"Woods Hole Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":142487,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0397/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":9764,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/pubs/of1982_397/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38452,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0397/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db648d9c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paskevich, Valerie F.","contributorId":81907,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paskevich","given":"Valerie","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161694,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The samples, in ascending sequence, show a gradual change in the spore-bisaccate ratio from a preponderance of spores to numerical dominance of bisaccate pollen grains. This change is interpreted to indicate a climatic trend toward increasing aridity. The trend is thought to represent the decreasing energy phase of the oldest of three depositional cycles posited by Lupe (1977, 1979). The late Karnian age indicated for the Chinle Formation by pollen and spores is based on material from the lower part of the formation, leaving open the possibility that the upper part of the Chinle may be younger.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82937","usgsCitation":"Scott, R., 1982, Aspects of the palynology of the Chinle Formation (Upper Triassic), Colorado Plateau, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-937, 21 p. ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82937.","productDescription":"21 p. ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144161,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0937/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38833,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0937/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abbe4b07f02db672a24","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scott, Richard A.","contributorId":14414,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scott","given":"Richard A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162487,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
