Of the stations which do show trends, however, most show improved water quality: thirty-one of a total of 276 stations show rising dissolved oxygen concentrations, while only 17 show decreasing concentrations. Decreases in fecal coliform populations have occurred at 21 stations while increases have occurred at only 12 stations. \r\n\r\nApproximately half of the stations showing improving trends in dissolved oxygen and fecal coliform bacteria are in the Missouri-Mississippi-Ohio River system. Decreases in dissolved oxygen have occurred at scattered locations in the Western and South-Central States. Rising bacterial populations occur most frequently in the Eastern and Central States \r\n\r\nTrends in dissolved oxygen concentration resulting from temperature changes occurring during the study period can be separated from trends caused by chemical or biological processes by analyzing computed values of dissolved oxygen deficit. Geohydrologic data are compiled on six maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southwestern Dutchess County and a small part of Putnan County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, aquifer thickness, water-table elevations and land use. The valley-fill deposits consist of alluvial silt and sand, glacial-outwash (sand and gravel), ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Saturated layers of sand and gravel underlie confining layers of silt and clay, and also underlie confining till. The water-infiltration potential of the soil zone of the valley-fill varies widely. Aquifer thickness data is sparse, especially data on the lower confined aquifer layers. Water-table elevations within the surface aquifer are gently sloping, directing ground-water flow towards streams into which discharge occurs. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly agricultural and residential, with lesser amounts of commercial and industrial uses. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel whereas artesian conditions prevail within sand and gravel confined by silty deposits. The aquifer is recharged throughout, where the land surface is most permeable and is greatest along the margin of the valley, where runoff from the hillsides is concentrated. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly commercial, agricultural, and residential with lesser industrial uses. The limestone, which is part of the surficial aquifer, is the principal source of water to shallow wells in the county. The unit generally consists of a soft, friable, cavernous, sandy limestone, which ranges from about 5 to 40 feet in thickness. The valley-fill deposits consists of alluvial silt and sand, glacial outwash (sand and gravel), ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities, whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel along the Ramapo River valley and much of the Mahwah River valley. Artesian conditions prevail in confined sand and gravel buried under silt and clay and till in parts of the Mahway valley. The aquifer is recharged throughout, where the land surface is most permeable and is greatest along the margin of the valley, where runoff from the hillsides is concentrated. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly commercial, agricultural and residential, with lesser industrial uses. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, bedrock topography, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, potentiometric surface altitude, and land use. The buried-valley deposits consist of ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and glaciolacustrine sand, silt, and clay. The sand and gravel have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel, whereas artesian conditions prevail in the northern part of the system within sand and gravel confined by silty deposits. Recharge occurs principally over the southern part of the aquifer, due to permeable land-surface conditions. Ground-water movement is towards the Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario, where discharge occurs. Several communities have wells capable of producing several hundred gallons per minute from the aquifer. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly residential with lesser amounts of industrial uses. One such aquifer is formed by the Ogallala Formation of Miocene age which covers most of the western part of the area. Because saturated thickness of the aquifer decrease northeastward, maximum yields to irrigation wells decrease in that direction from 2,000 to 500 gallons per minute. The Grand Island Formation of Pleistocene age occurs in an ancestral channel of the Republican River in northeast Jewell and northwest Republic counties. The maximum yield to wells from this aquifer was estimated to be 2,000 gallons per minute. Quaternary alluvium of Pleistocene and Holocene age occurs in most major stream valleys. The aquifer in the Republican River valley yields as much as 2,000 gallons per minute to irrigation wells. Water levels in the Ogallala Formation commonly declined from 5 to 40 feet during 1950-77 as a result of irrigation withdrawals. Recharge from irrigation by stream diversions have raised water levels as much as 25 feet in the Grand Island Formation and as much as 15 feet in the Quaternary alluvium of the Prairie Dog Creek valley. Geohydrologic data are compiled on five maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together, the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southwestern Broome County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, aquifer thickness, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, potentiometric-surface altitude, and land use. The valley-fill deposits consist of alluvial silt and sand, glacial outwash (sand and gravel), ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt, and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions are found in unconfined sand and gravel, whereas artesian conditions prevail within sand and gravel confined by silty deposits. Recharge occurs over the entire surface of the aquifer, due to permeable land-surface conditions, but is greatest along the margin of the valley, where runoff from the hillsides is concentrated, and near streams. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly commercial and residential with lesser amounts of agricultural and industrial uses.
