In response, a variety of water quality improvement projects and regulations have been implemented in recent decades. A recent study showed that, from water years 2003 to 2021, concentrations of total phosphorus at the mouth of the Boise River near Parma decreased by 60 percent, indicating the success of the improvement projects and progress towards reaching the regulatory target. However, although the progress of the system as a whole towards reaching the total phosphorus target is well documented, quantifying contributions and trends in total phosphorus loading from individual tributaries and upstream mainstem locations is needed. Similarly, tributary contributions and trends of other constituents of concern are unknown or have not been evaluated in a decade. To evaluate the success of past water-quality improvement efforts and help prioritize future investments, this study characterized spatial and seasonal patterns in concentrations and loads of suspended sediment, total phosphorus, orthophosphate, total nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite, Escherichia coli bacteria, and periphyton chlorophyll a (chl-a) at three mainstem and seven tributary sites of the lower Boise River during water years 2019–2023. For sites and constituents with adequate data, temporal trends over a 15-year and 30-year period were also evaluated.

Recent (in other words, water years 2019–2023) concentrations and loads of suspended sediment and total phosphorus were typically greatest during the irrigation season and often exceeded total maximum daily load targets. However, concentrations and loads of suspended sediment, total phosphorus, and orthophosphate have decreased over the past 15 to 30 years at many sites. In contrast, concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrate plus nitrite showed increasing trends at the Boise River near Parma, likely reflecting the effects of regional changes in agricultural practices in recent decades. Periphyton chl-a concentrations during October–November were highly likely increasing over the 30-year period at Boise River at Eckert, but were uncertain at Middleton and Parma. At Boise River at Middleton, periphyton chl-a concentrations exceeded the total maximum daily load target of 150 milligrams per square meter in 75 percent of samples during water years 2019–2023. Results therefore demonstrate that past watershed improvement efforts have been largely effective at reducing concentrations and loads of suspended sediment, total phosphorus, and orthophosphate in the lower Boise River watershed, but different strategies may be needed to reduce concentrations and loads of total nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite, Escherichia coli, and periphyton chl-a.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/sir20255033","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Lower Boise Watershed Council","usgsCitation":"Baldwin, A.K., and King, T.V., 2025, Spatial patterns and temporal trends in water quality in Idaho’s lower Boise River and its tributaries, 1994–2023: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2025–5033, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20255033.","productDescription":"Report viii, 45 p.; Data Release","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-146130","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":499042,"rank":7,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_118592.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":489233,"rank":6,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2025/5033/sir20255033.XML"},{"id":489232,"rank":5,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2025/5033/images"},{"id":489231,"rank":4,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P13VWHMF","text":"USGS data release","description":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Water quality concentrations and discharge in the lower Boise River and select tributaries, southwestern Idaho, 1994–2023"},{"id":489230,"rank":3,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/sir20255033/full","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"SIR 2025-5033"},{"id":489228,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2025/5033/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":489229,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2025/5033/sir20255033.pdf","text":"Report","size":"7 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"SIR 2025-5033"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Lower Boise River watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.03387029585451,\n              43.87149726119398\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.03387029585451,\n              43.477324089144474\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.06261864282659,\n              43.477324089144474\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.06261864282659,\n              43.87149726119398\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.03387029585451,\n              43.87149726119398\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Idaho Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
230 Collins Rd
Boise, Idaho 83702-4520
","tableOfContents":"

Acknowledgments

Abstract

Introduction

Datasets

Data Analysis

Results and Discussion

Summary and Conclusions

References Cited

Appendix 1

","publishedDate":"2025-05-30","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-30","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Baldwin, Austin K. 0000-0002-6027-3823 akbaldwi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6027-3823","contributorId":4515,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldwin","given":"Austin","email":"akbaldwi@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":938683,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Tyler V. 0000-0002-5785-3077","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5785-3077","contributorId":352514,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"King","given":"Tyler V.","affiliations":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":938684,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Focal territories were those territories from which study inferences will be made, whereas nonfocal territories were observed to monitor common loon dynamics in territories adjacent to focal territories. In collaboration with lake associations and private citizens, we deployed 44 artificial nesting platforms within 44 treatment territories, and the remaining 54 focal territories were controls. We completed territorial surveys from April 29 to August 9, 2024, to evaluate occupancy, nest success, and chick survival. We attempted to visit each territory once a week. At least one nest attempt was observed in 41 of 54 control territories. Precisely one nest attempt was observed in 30 control territories, two nest attempts (first attempts failed) were observed in 9 control territories, and three nest attempts (first and second attempts failed) were observed in 2 control territories. At least one nest attempt was observed in 33 of 44 treatment territories. Precisely one nest attempt was observed in 25 treatment territories, two nest attempts (first attempts failed) were observed in 7 treatment territories, and three nest attempts (first and second attempts failed) were observed in 1 treatment territory. In treatment territories, 8 nests were on an artificial nesting platform; the remaining nest locations were natural. Chicks or other evidence of hatching were observed in 26 of 54 (48.1 percent) control territories and 21 of 44 (47.7 percent) treatment territories, with 7 of those successful treatment nests on an artificial nesting platform. There has been very little documentation of the leaf litter arthropods in Hawaiian forest ecosystems. This technical report is a photographic guide to some common arthropods collected from forest leaf litter at the Liko Nā Pilina Hybrid Ecosystems Project study site, a lowland wet forest in Hilo, Island of Hawaiʻi, USA. Leaf litter samples were collected from plots of invaded and experimental restoration communities using two complementary methods (litterbags and quadrats), and arthropods were extracted using Berlese funnels. Prior work finds that graphical forecast products may communicate such information better than only text or numbers. To identify which visual products can serve multiple user groups, we held workshops with members of several professions, including emergency managers, engineers, critical infrastructure operators, public health specialists, science communicators, and more. We conducted these workshops in El Salvador, Mexico and the United States to understand which forecast products may be effective across different countries. In these workshops, users performed small-group activities to elicit the types of aftershock forecast information that would support decisions in their respective roles and how this information would optimally be displayed. Maps of shaking hazards were frequently requested across all professions and countries, even for dissimilar forecast uses. The design of these maps, and other product needs, were differentiated by profession, country and other factors. Other forecast products, including those showing forecasts about the magnitudes and time periods of future aftershocks, also served a variety of users, but for different types of decisions. We found a greater variation in user needs by profession than by country, and that user needs also vary with time, communication channel and other contextual factors. We discuss practical implications for user-centered visual communication of operational aftershock forecasts.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.ijdrr.2025.105450","usgsCitation":"Schneider, M., Wein, A., McBride, S., van der Elst, N., Becker, J., Castro, R., Previous efforts to characterize aquifer materials in the area cited a need for additional information about the underlying hydrogeologic characteristics and related groundwater availability as well as improved mapping of the extent and properties of the glacial deposits.

Recent U.S. Geological Survey multi-State compilations of water-well drilling records have greatly increased access to high-resolution geologic data, particularly in glacial depositional environments. This study by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, uses processed data from the State-managed collections of well records to characterize the glacial deposits in the study area using two methods. The first method creates two-dimensional maps of basic hydrogeologic information commonly required for assessments of groundwater availability, including (1) total thickness of glacial deposits, (2) total thickness of coarse-grained deposits, (3) specific-capacity-based transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity, and (4) texture-based estimated equivalent horizontal and vertical hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity. The second method builds a hydrogeologic framework of the complex glacial aquifer through construction of a volumetric geologic model by using three-dimensional kriging.

Results of the volumetric model indicate that aquifer materials are primarily concentrated in the western parts of the study area near the Indiana-Ohio border. Coarse-grained sediments are also present as surficial deposits in the north of the study area where intermixing glacial advances created complex distributions of unconsolidated deposits. Two-dimensional maps of hydrogeologic properties support the volumetric model, showing thicknesses of coarse-grained deposits that reach up to 250 feet in the western sections of the study area and progressively thin to near absence in the east. Visualization of the aquifer materials with a volumetric model generally shows a highly discontinuous distribution of coarse- and fine-grained materials, with no clearly defined boundaries to delineate the extent of the aquifer. Comparisons of cross sections derived from the volumetric model with existing published maps support previous near-surface hydrogeologic interpretations while filling gaps where data are sparse, particularly in deeper parts of the aquifer. Both the two-dimensional maps and the volumetric model provide data that can directly inform assessments of groundwater availability, in addition to having future applications to studies of groundwater flow and transport.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/sir20255008","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency","usgsCitation":"Riddle, A.D., Arihood, L.D., Naylor, S., and Lampe, D.C., 2025, Hydrogeologic mapping and three-dimensional geologic modeling of glacial deposits in a multicounty area of southeastern Michigan, northeastern Indiana, and northwestern Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2025–5008, 47 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20255008.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 47 p.; Mona Block is located within the inner wall of the Puerto Rico Trench. A similar veneer of carbonate rocks (corals and pavement) was encountered during a deep submergence vehicle (DSV) Alvin dive in 1976 on the north side of Mona Block at depths of 3650–2900 m. We also observed a remnant Oligocene–Pliocene carbonate platform at a depth of 2080 m on the east side of the block. Restoring the carbonate outcrops to near sea level implies that Mona Block, with a summit currently at 670 m bsl, was an island with an elevation of ≥1000 m until the mid-Pleistocene and has subsided and tilted to the north thereafter. We suggest that the observed subsidence was caused by the foundering or retreating North American slab, which gave rise to the anomalously deep Puerto Rico Trench. Our estimated trench wall subsidence varies nonlinearly from ~800 m in the distal part to ≥3700 m near the trench. Carbonate platform subsidence north of Puerto Rico is older (mid-Pliocene), suggesting that subsidence and, by inference, trench collapse had propagated westward with time. Mona Block is thus a yardstick for studying mantle processes associated with slab retreat and foundering.

","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/G53315.1","usgsCitation":"ten Brink, U.S., Flores, C., Chaytor, J., and Purkey Phillips, M., 2025, Kilometers-scale subsidence of the inner Puerto Rico Trench wall since the Pleistocene: Geology, v. 53, no. 8, p. 699-703, https://doi.org/10.1130/G53315.1.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"699","endPage":"703","ipdsId":"IP-177123","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":504808,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1130/g53315.1","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":504693,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Mona Block, Puerto Rico Trench","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -68.25,\n              19.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -67,\n              19.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -67,\n              18.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -68.256,\n              18.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -68.25,\n              19.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"53","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-29","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"ten Brink, Uri S. 0000-0001-6858-3001","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6858-3001","contributorId":201741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"ten Brink","given":"Uri","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":961928,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Flores, Claudia 0000-0003-0676-7061 cflores@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0676-7061","contributorId":304396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flores","given":"Claudia","email":"cflores@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":961929,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Chaytor, Jason 0000-0001-8135-8677 jchaytor@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8135-8677","contributorId":140095,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chaytor","given":"Jason","email":"jchaytor@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":961930,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Purkey Phillips, Marcie","contributorId":346790,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Purkey Phillips","given":"Marcie","affiliations":[{"id":29861,"text":"The University of Texas at Austin","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":961931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These changes may increase microbially mediated production of the neurotoxic substance methylmercury due to enhanced sulfate metabolism in mountain environments. Here, we assess methylmercury concentrations and formation rates across high-elevation wetlands in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. We also investigate sulfate controls on methylmercury production within subalpine peatlands by amending soils with sulfate to mimic increased stream export of sulfate from the alpine zone and measuring methylmercury formation rates for different sulfate treatments. We found that subalpine peatlands have statistically significant higher methylmercury concentrations and formation rates compared to alpine, mineral-soil wetlands. Methylmercury production in subalpine peatlands also increased significantly (p < 0.05) following sulfate additions; the highest rates occurred in sediments with intermediate extractable sulfate concentrations (∼0.60–1.4 mg sulfate g<sup>−1</sup> dry soil). The Mount Weld REE deposit in Western Australia is hosted in a lateritic sequence that reflects supergene enrichment of the underlying carbonatite. Water-rock interaction is a key to the formation of this world-class deposit. REE enrichment in the laterite is controlled by the breakdown of primary minerals, the release and transport of REEs, and the formation of secondary minerals. Secondary REE-bearing phosphate minerals are the primary REE-host phases in the laterite ore with monazite as the dominant phase; other REE-bearing phases include rhabdophane, cerianite, churchite, florencite, and crandallite subgroup minerals. Profiles through the laterite show that in the REE-rich zone, apatite and primary calcite and dolomite have broken down such that the loss of Ca and Mg, as well as Si and K, leads to a relative increase in the REEs. Sequestering of REEs in secondary mineral phases formed by groundwater further enhances the REE concentration.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 3rd IAGC international conference","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"UNICApress","usgsCitation":"Verplanck, P., Thompson, J.M., Mercer, C.M., Bhat, G., Lowers, H.A., and Boehlke, A., 2025, Formation of the Mount Weld rare earth element deposit, Western Australia: A carbonatite-derived laterite, in Proceedings of the 3rd IAGC international conference, p. 643-646.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"643","endPage":"646","ipdsId":"IP-175346","costCenters":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":491177,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":491167,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://unicapress.unica.it/index.php/unicapress/catalog/book/978-88-3312-187-1"}],"country":"Australia","otherGeospatial":"Mount Weld Mine","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              122.51875238583227,\n              -28.852849393633186\n            ],\n            [\n              122.51875238583227,\n              -28.883149678371097\n            ],\n            [\n              122.5640779834194,\n              -28.883149678371097\n            ],\n            [\n              122.5640779834194,\n              -28.852849393633186\n            ],\n            [\n              122.51875238583227,\n              -28.852849393633186\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Verplanck, Philip L. 0000-0002-3653-6419","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3653-6419","contributorId":212813,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Verplanck","given":"Philip","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":941148,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thompson, Jay M. 0000-0003-3322-0870","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3322-0870","contributorId":329664,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"Jay","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":941149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mercer, Cameron Mark 0000-0003-0534-848X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0534-848X","contributorId":301880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mercer","given":"Cameron","email":"","middleInitial":"Mark","affiliations":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":941150,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bhat, Ganesh","contributorId":329666,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bhat","given":"Ganesh","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":78683,"text":"Lynas Rare Earths Ltd","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":941151,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Lowers, Heather A. 0000-0001-5360-9264 hlowers@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5360-9264","contributorId":191307,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lowers","given":"Heather","email":"hlowers@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":941152,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Boehlke, Adam 0000-0003-4980-431X aboehlke@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4980-431X","contributorId":3470,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boehlke","given":"Adam","email":"aboehlke@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":941153,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

This paper examines the impact of future climate changes on an urban watershed in southern California using an integrated hydrologic model. GSFLOW modeling software is used to simulate the nonlinear relationships between climate trends and precipitation partitioning into ET, runoff, and subsurface storage. Four global circulation models (GCMs), each with two greenhouse-gas scenarios, RCP45 and RCP85 are used to project future climate conditions. GCMs include the CanESM2, CNRM-CM5, HadGEM2-ES, and MIROC5 models. The model's simulated hydrologic conditions are compared with historical data to assess changes in water budgets and groundwater supply. Results indicate decreased groundwater storage in most scenarios due to increased natural evapotranspiration, vegetation consumptive use, and streamflow out of the watershed. Only scenarios with substantially increased future precipitation show increased groundwater storage. The study also highlights increased future aridity despite the rise in precipitation and large precipitation events forecast by GCMs, which increase the risk of urban floods and decrease stream leakage and water available to vegetation.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.ejrh.2025.102461","usgsCitation":"Ryter, D.W., Alzraiee, A.H., and Niswonger, R., 2025, Simulation of the impacts of projected climate change on groundwater resources in the urban, semiarid Yucaipa Valley watershed, southern California using an integrated hydrologic model: Journal of Hydrology, Regional Studies, v. 60, 102461, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejrh.2025.102461.","productDescription":"102461, 16 p.","ipdsId":"IP-153865","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":493789,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejrh.2025.102461","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":493644,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Yucaipa Valley watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.09271702186436,\n              34.0874203948469\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.09271702186436,\n              33.9725594754417\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.9002906646693,\n              33.9725594754417\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.9002906646693,\n              34.0874203948469\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.09271702186436,\n              34.0874203948469\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"60","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ryter, Derek W. 0000-0002-2488-626X dryter@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2488-626X","contributorId":3395,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ryter","given":"Derek","email":"dryter@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":516,"text":"Oklahoma Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":944909,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Alzraiee, Ayman H. 0000-0001-7576-3449","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7576-3449","contributorId":272120,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Alzraiee","given":"Ayman","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":944910,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Niswonger, Richard G. rniswon@usgs.gov","contributorId":146547,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Niswonger","given":"Richard G.","email":"rniswon@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":944911,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Geospatial data acquired since the previous study in 2003, annual peak-streamflow data through the 2013 water year, and Bulletin 17C methods for frequency analysis of annual peak-streamflow data were used in the study. Generalized least-squares regression equations were developed for four hydrologic areas with distinct hydrologic, geologic, and topographic characteristics. Drainage area was used as an explanatory variable in equations developed for each hydrologic area. In addition to drainage area, a 2-year recurrence-interval climate factor was used for hydrologic area 1, a 10–85 channel slope was used for hydrologic area 2, and percent imperviousness was used for hydrologic area 4. The regression equations can be used to estimate annual exceedance probability streamflows for ungaged locations on non-urban, unregulated streams in Tennessee. The term “unregulated” indicates that streamflow is not appreciably influenced by regulation from reservoirs or other impoundments. Average standard errors of prediction for the regression equations ranged from 44.4 to 51.4 percent for hydrologic area 1; 30.4 to 42.9 percent for hydrologic area 2; 35.7 to 42.6 percent for However, most species are nongame—those not traditionally captured for sport or harvest in countries where recreational fisheries predominate. Greater conservation of nongame species could help ensure that population declines do not go unnoticed. Unfortunately, fisheries managers already manage complex ecosystems with limited resources, and they frequently are directed to focus on game fishes. However, game fish populations can also be tightly coupled to nongame fishes, so nongame management can sometimes also benefit game species. We reviewed functional roles of freshwater nongame fishes and suggest categories that may be especially important for conservation. Of note, nongame fishes are more imperiled than game fishes and fill largely distinct functional roles. These roles include food-web impacts, ecosystem engineering, and mussel hosting. Management priorities could include nongame piscivores and species with high biomass, especially herbivores, nest builders, and imperiled mussel hosts. We provide practical options for including nongame fishes in current management, many of which require little additional funding. These include recognizing when sport fish funding and conservation can also benefit nongame species, whole-community sampling at some monitoring locations, collecting catch data for select species observed during game fish surveys, embracing environmental DNA sampling, and making presence–absence record keeping the default option.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1093/fshmag/vuaf040","usgsCitation":"Clancy, N.G., Rahel, F.J., Peoples, B., Walters, A.W., Lyons, J., Mandrak, N.E., Budy, P., Frimpong, E.A., and Cross, W., 2025, On the importance and practical conservation of nongame fishes.: Fisheries, https://doi.org/10.1093/fshmag/vuaf040.","ipdsId":"IP-170739","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":490166,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/fshmag/vuaf040","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":489391,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-28","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Clancy, Niall G.","contributorId":337769,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Clancy","given":"Niall","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":52338,"text":"Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":938904,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rahel, Frank J.","contributorId":272596,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Rahel","given":"Frank","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":12729,"text":"UW","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":938905,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Peoples, Brandon K.","contributorId":341046,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Peoples","given":"Brandon K.","affiliations":[{"id":7084,"text":"Clemson University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":938906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Walters, Annika W. 0000-0002-8638-6682 awalters@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8638-6682","contributorId":4190,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walters","given":"Annika","email":"awalters@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":938907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Lyons, John","contributorId":356237,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lyons","given":"John","affiliations":[{"id":7122,"text":"University of Wisconsin","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":938908,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Mandrak, Nicholas E.","contributorId":177869,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Mandrak","given":"Nicholas","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":938909,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Budy, Phaedra E. 0000-0002-9918-1678","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9918-1678","contributorId":228930,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Budy","given":"Phaedra E.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":938910,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Frimpong, Emmanuel A","contributorId":219188,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Frimpong","given":"Emmanuel","email":"","middleInitial":"A","affiliations":[{"id":25550,"text":"Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":938911,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Cross, Wyatt F.","contributorId":237773,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cross","given":"Wyatt F.","affiliations":[{"id":47607,"text":"Department of Ecology, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":938912,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9}]}}

CES make foundational contributions to human well-being, and yet they are consistently underrepresented in research products intended to inform decision-making. In particular, the relational and holistic values associated with CES categories such as cultural identity and maintenance of knowledge systems have been inadequately conveyed through existing instrumental approaches to ecosystem service assessment and ecosystem valuation. In this chapter we detail (1) a spectrum of forms in which CES knowledge may be conveyed to inform decision-making and (2) constraints and enabling factors that influence whether plural CES values are meaningfully considered in decision-making. This chapter considers how these constraints/enablers commonly influence integration of distinct CES knowledge forms in natural resource management decision contexts. Examples are then offered from case study research on Elwha River dam removal decision-making (Washington state, USA). These examples illustrate that factors commonly constraining integration of diverse CES knowledge forms can transform into enablers for meaningful consideration of relational values and holistic value perspectives, alongside instrumental values. The chapter concludes with takeaways for decision-makers, managers, and those who hold CES knowledge and seek to convey plural CES values to inform decision-making.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Routledge handbook of cultural ecosystem services","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.4324/9781003414896-37","usgsCitation":"Hoelting, K., Gould, R.K., Cravens, A.E., and Winter, B., 2025, Constraints and enablers for meaningful consideration of plural values through integration of cultural ecosystem services (CES) in decision-making, chap. 31 of Routledge handbook of cultural ecosystem services, p. 408-425, https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003414896-37.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"408","endPage":"425","ipdsId":"IP-158699","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":493318,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003414896-37","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":493089,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-28","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"McElwee, Pamela D.","contributorId":358886,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McElwee","given":"Pamela D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":944357,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Allen, Karen E.","contributorId":358887,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Allen","given":"Karen E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":944358,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gould, Rachelle K. 0000-0002-6307-8783","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6307-8783","contributorId":213456,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gould","given":"Rachelle","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":13253,"text":"University of Vermont","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":944360,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hsu, Minna","contributorId":358888,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hsu","given":"Minna","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":944361,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":4},{"text":"He, Jun","contributorId":358889,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"He","given":"Jun","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":944362,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":5}],"authors":[{"text":"Hoelting, Kristen R","contributorId":358879,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hoelting","given":"Kristen R","affiliations":[{"id":6621,"text":"Colorado State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":944342,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gould, Rachelle K. 0000-0002-6307-8783","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6307-8783","contributorId":213456,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gould","given":"Rachelle","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":13253,"text":"University of Vermont","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":944343,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cravens, Amanda E. 0000-0002-0271-7967 aecravens@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0271-7967","contributorId":196752,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cravens","given":"Amanda","email":"aecravens@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":944344,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Winter, Brian D.","contributorId":358882,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Winter","given":"Brian D.","affiliations":[{"id":85701,"text":"Retired, National Park Service, Olympic National Park","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":944345,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

If these rocks are chemically weathered, then the REEs may become further enriched within the regolith developed from these rocks. Primary magmatic REE minerals, as well as the various carbonate minerals and apatite, provide the REEs which, under pervasive chemical weathering, are incorporated within low-temperature REE minerals forming within the regolith. Many of these minerals, as well as their textures, are characteristic of this mode of formation. Lateritic conditions of weathering are instrumental in producing a thick, weathered, or regolith, profile, and the roles of sulfide oxidation, fluctuating groundwater tables, and downward mass wasting due to carbonate dissolution are identified as the most important controls on REE enrichment in the regolith.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geology, geochemistry and formation of supergene mineral deposits in deeply weathered terrain","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/978-3-031-75733-4_7","usgsCitation":"Siegfried, P.R., Wall, F., and Verplanck, P., 2025, Carbonatite-hosted residual REE deposits, chap. of Geology, geochemistry and formation of supergene mineral deposits in deeply weathered terrain, p. 179-206, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-75733-4_7.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"179","endPage":"206","ipdsId":"IP-139371","costCenters":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":502409,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"text":"External Repository"},{"id":496076,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-28","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Bowell, Robert J.","contributorId":150175,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bowell","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":17927,"text":"SRK Consulting Ltd.","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":949475,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Butt, Charles R.M.","contributorId":361797,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Butt","given":"Charles","middleInitial":"R.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":949476,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Siegfried, Peter R 0000-0001-8254-9889","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8254-9889","contributorId":361785,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Siegfried","given":"Peter","middleInitial":"R","affiliations":[{"id":86350,"text":"Camborne School of Mines","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":949449,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wall, Frances 0000-0002-5393-4400","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5393-4400","contributorId":361786,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wall","given":"Frances","affiliations":[{"id":86350,"text":"Camborne School of Mines","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":949450,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Verplanck, Philip L. 0000-0002-3653-6419","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3653-6419","contributorId":212813,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Verplanck","given":"Philip","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":949451,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Surveys were completed at six locations: two along the middle San Luis Rey River (Bonsall [BO] and Rincon), which were last surveyed in 2021, and four along the upper San Luis Rey River, including three downstream from Lake Henshaw that have been surveyed annually since 2015 (Rey River Ranch, Cleveland National Forest [CNF], Vista Irrigation District [VID]), and one upstream at VID Lake Henshaw (VLH) that has been surveyed annually since 2018. There were a minimum of 47 territorial flycatchers (26 male, 21 female) detected at 1 location (VLH) and 6 transient flycatchers of unknown subspecies detected at 3 locations (BO, CNF, and VLH). In total, 30 territories were established, containing 21 pairs and 9 flycatchers of undetermined breeding status. Of the 21 pairs, 13 pairs were monogamous (1 male and 1 female), and 8 pairs were polygynous (1 male paired with more than 1 female). No territorial flycatchers were detected downstream from Lake Henshaw or along the middle San Luis Rey River. Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater; cowbird) were detected at all six survey locations. No banded flycatchers were detected during surveys.

Flycatchers used four habitat types in the survey area: (1) mixed willow riparian, (2) willow-cottonwood, (3) willow-oak, and (4) willow-sycamore. Of the flycatcher locations, 86 percent were in habitat characterized as mixed willow riparian, and 97 percent were in habitat with greater than 95-percent native plant cover.

We monitored flycatcher nests at VLH to collect baseline data on nest success, productivity, and parasitism rate. There were 22 nests monitored in 13 territories; 9 were successful. Of the 13 failed nests, 8 were depredated, 3 failed for unknown reasons, and 2 failed because of cowbird parasitism. We confirmed 26 juvenile flycatchers in 2024, which included 22 from monitored nests, and an additional 4 juveniles detected in unmonitored territories. Based on 19 nests in which the contents were observed during the egg stage, 16 percent of nests in 2024 were parasitized.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/dr1212","programNote":"Ecosystems Mission Area—Species Management Research Program","usgsCitation":"Howell, S.L., and Kus, B.E., 2025, Distribution, abundance, and breeding activities of Southwestern Willow Flycatchers (Empidonax traillii extimus) at select locations on the San Luis Rey River, San Diego County, California—2024 data summary: U.S. Geological Survey Data Report 1212, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/dr1212.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 16 p.; Data Release","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-175205","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":486429,"rank":6,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/dr/1212/dr1212.XML"},{"id":486427,"rank":4,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P96VC5Y4","text":"USGS data release","description":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Southwestern Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) surveys and nest monitoring in San Diego County, California (ver. 4.0, February 2025)"},{"id":486428,"rank":5,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/dr/1212/images"},{"id":486424,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/dr/1212/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":486425,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/dr/1212/dr1212.pdf","text":"Report","size":"3.1 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"DR 1212"},{"id":486426,"rank":3,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/dr1212/full","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"DR 1212"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"San Diego County","otherGeospatial":"San Luis Rey River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.25,\n              33.333\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.25,\n              33.1667\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.6667,\n              33.1667\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.6667,\n              33.333\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.25,\n              33.333\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Western Ecological Research Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3020 State University Drive East
Sacramento, California 95819
","tableOfContents":"

Executive Summary

Introduction

Methods

Results

Summary

References Cited

","publishedDate":"2025-05-28","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-28","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Howell, Scarlett L. 0000-0001-7538-4860 showell@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7538-4860","contributorId":140441,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howell","given":"Scarlett","email":"showell@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":938091,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kus, Barbara E. 0000-0002-3679-3044 barbara_kus@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3679-3044","contributorId":3026,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kus","given":"Barbara E.","email":"barbara_kus@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":938092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Connecticut is manufacturing and service focused, ranking almost highest among the 50 States in the United States in personal income per capita. Due to Connecticut’s dense population, many people, especially the approximately 60 percent living near the coast, may be affected by climate-driven disasters. High-quality elevation data can inform the activities of many nongovernmental organizations and municipal and academic entities statewide, resulting in substantial economic impact. Government at the State and local levels relies on these data to support regulatory permitting, resource and infrastructure management, and various engineering and planning-level analyses. Critical applications that meet the State’s management needs depend on light detection and ranging (lidar) data that provide a highly detailed three-dimensional (3D) model of the Earth’s surface and aboveground features.

The 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) is managed by the U.S. Geological Survey in partnership with Federal, State, Tribal, U.S. territorial, and local agencies to acquire consistent lidar coverage at quality level 2 or better to meet the many needs of the Nation and Connecticut. The status of available and in-progress 3DEP baseline lidar data in Connecticut is shown. 3DEP baseline lidar data include quality level 2 or better, 1-meter or better digital elevation models, and lidar point clouds, and must meet the Lidar Base Specification version 1.2 or newer requirements. The National Enhanced Elevation Assessment identified user requirements and conservatively estimated that availability of lidar data would result in at least $4.40 million in new benefits annually to the State. The top 10 Connecticut business uses for 3D elevation data, which are based on the estimated annual conservative benefits of 3DEP, are shown.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological By advancing our understanding of the impacts of these activities, we can reduce adverse effects, improve decision-making, and enhance the outcomes of research and management. During 2017–2019, we observed the responses of denning female American black bears (Ursus americanus) to 3 types of routine research and management activities in Florida, USA: (1) a low-level, nonintrusive human approach near the natal den (n H 44); (2) a high-level, intrusive human approach involving cub handling (n H 42); and (3) a prescribed burn within 1 km of the den during the denning season (n H 11). We measured responses (flight distance, time away, and postdisturbance denning behavior) using Global Positioning System collars programmed to record a location every 2 hours. We observed minimal response from bears to low-level human disturbances. In contrast, all bears fled after high-level human disturbances, with responses ranging from staying nearby throughout the disturbance and quickly returning to cubs, to fleeing several kilometers and abandoning cubs. On average, bears fled approximately 380 m from the den and returned to their cubs 7 hours postdisturbance. After returning, most bears relocated their cubs to a new den site, on average 125 m away. Responses to prescribed fire ranged from no measurable response and no den relocation to den site abandonment with cub mortality. Through generalized linear modeling, we found that adult female time away was positively associated with cub age. We found that annual cub survival was negatively associated with fire exposure in the den and with continued denning at a disturbed den site following high-level disturbance. In areas where bears are easily displaced from dens, these results provide insights that may improve bear research and habitat management decisions.
","language":"English","publisher":"International Association for Bear Research and Management","doi":"10.2192/ursus-d-24-00011r1","usgsCitation":"Doran-Myers, D., Gregory, K., McGowan, C.P., Hull, V., and Scheick, B.K., 2025, Denning black bear response to anthropogenic disturbance and implications for cub survival in Florida: Ursus, v. 2525, no. 36e7, p. 1-20, https://doi.org/10.2192/ursus-d-24-00011r1.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"20","ipdsId":"IP-162854","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":494465,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.2192/ursus-d-24-00011r1","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":494389,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -85.70700771970081,\n              30.533149376429677\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.70700771970081,\n              29.526013452470593\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.16956484525814,\n              29.526013452470593\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.16956484525814,\n              30.533149376429677\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.70700771970081,\n              30.533149376429677\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"2525","issue":"36e7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-27","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doran-Myers, Darcy","contributorId":359973,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Doran-Myers","given":"Darcy","affiliations":[{"id":36221,"text":"University of Florida","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gregory, Kaili","contributorId":359974,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gregory","given":"Kaili","affiliations":[{"id":36221,"text":"University of Florida","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McGowan, Conor P. 0000-0002-7330-9581 cmcgowan@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7330-9581","contributorId":10145,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGowan","given":"Conor","email":"cmcgowan@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":946613,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hull, Vanessa","contributorId":340791,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hull","given":"Vanessa","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":36221,"text":"University of Florida","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Scheick, Brian K.","contributorId":359976,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Scheick","given":"Brian","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":12556,"text":"Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946615,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

There is a need for more transdisciplinary and multi-sited research to enrich our understandings of the complexity of human-nonhuman interactions and to design ways to make them more convivial. The multi-year CONVIVA “convivial conservation” research project addressed this gap, involving scholars from natural sciences, social sciences and humanities to promote coexistence, biodiversity and justice in conservation across four diverse case studies of apex predators: jaguars in Brazil, wolves in Finland, lions in Tanzania, and brown bears in California, United States. In this article, we set out two key contributions. First, we highlight how our project created iterative, dialogue-based reflections amongst different disciplines and perspectives to inform research questions, methods and units of analysis, fulfilling what we see as a key need in the literature. Second, we operationalise our collaboration beyond disciplinary silos into a novel framework of five interconnected dimensions of analysis, that characterise human-predator interactions, drawing on a range of lenses and including a series of guiding questions. We also showcase empirical material from our cases across wildlife, environment, interactions, institutions and justice dimensions. We present our approach, framework and findings with collective reflections and an invitation for adaptation and further research on their suitability to other contexts and species.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.biocon.2025.111145","usgsCitation":"Krauss, J., Fiasco, V., Marchini, S., Mcinturff, M.C., Sandroni, L., Alagona, P., We reviewed the composition of fish species in an impounded river basin (Tennessee River, USA) to identify traits that influence rarity. We delineate levels of rarity based on the number of occupied reservoirs and species distribution, compare traits across rarity levels, and pinpoint traits that influence species rarity inside reservoirs. Four rarity levels were designated to 212 fish species: absent from the reservoir, rare and restricted within the basin, rare and spread throughout the basin, and common throughout the basin. Common species had the most distinctive traits, suggesting highly filtered species. They exhibited higher fecundity, longevity, piscivory, potamodromy, and association with large woody debris, vegetation, slow current, and lacustrine habitats. Rare and spread and rare and restricted species were separated by a few macrohabitat traits, with the former tending to be more lowland, slow current, large river, and lacustrine-oriented whereas the latter more creek and lotic oriented. Only age at maturity, longevity, fecundity, and potamodromy—all of which were lower in absent species—separated the absent from the rare and restricted. About half of rare and restricted species were already rare and restricted pre-impoundment; the rest had wider distributions pre-impoundment denoting species vulnerable in reservoirs and needing conservation to prevent local extinctions. Signals gleaned from species traits and rarity analysis indicate that conservation of rare species may need to focus on enhancements to selected reservoir habitats and to basin-wide connectivity.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer Nature","doi":"10.1007/s11160-025-09957-4","usgsCitation":"Miranda, L.E., Funk, H.G., Jones, K.W., Dunn, C.G., and Lakin, K.M., 2025, The functional traits behind fish rarity in an impounded river basin: Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, v. 35, p. 1279-1299, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11160-025-09957-4.","productDescription":"21 p.","startPage":"1279","endPage":"1299","ipdsId":"IP-171416","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":494544,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.16036668893047,\n              37.4755799800556\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.16036668893047,\n              34.9503578073645\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.09538891256494,\n              34.9503578073645\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.09538891256494,\n              37.4755799800556\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.16036668893047,\n              37.4755799800556\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"35","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2025-05-26","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miranda, Leandro E. 0000-0002-2138-7924 smiranda@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2138-7924","contributorId":531,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miranda","given":"Leandro","email":"smiranda@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":946895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Funk, Hayden G.","contributorId":360209,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Funk","given":"Hayden","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":17848,"text":"Mississippi State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946896,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Jones, Kevin W.","contributorId":360212,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jones","given":"Kevin","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":17848,"text":"Mississippi State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946897,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dunn, Corey Garland 0000-0002-7102-2165","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7102-2165","contributorId":288691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunn","given":"Corey","email":"","middleInitial":"Garland","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":946898,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Lakin, Kurt M.","contributorId":360215,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lakin","given":"Kurt","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":13217,"text":"Tennessee Valley Authority","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":946899,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Yet, contemporary abundance estimates have not been completed for many shortnose sturgeon populations, largely owing to the difficulty in using traditional abundance estimators for sturgeons. Here, we estimate the adult shortnose sturgeon population size of the Hudson River, NY by integrating data from two largely passive sampling methods – acoustic telemetry and side-scan sonar – into a Bayesian hierarchical model of abundance. We estimated the adult abundance to be 69,798 individuals (95% CI = 9,207-185,666), making the Hudson River the largest extant shortnose sturgeon population. Despite this, the population remains vulnerable to localized disturbances, as over 40% of the population congregated in a small overwintering habitat that coincides with an area of high anthropogenic activity. Accordingly, recurrent demographic surveys may be beneficial for gaining insight into the relative effects of anthropogenic and naturally stochastic processes shaping shortnose sturgeon demography. Our modeling framework provides a relatively low-cost alternative for future demographic monitoring of species of conservation concern.
","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science
