Results of the investigation provide peak-flow data on streams generally with drainage areas less than 200 square miles, placing particular emphasis on those with drainage areas lees than 10 square miles. Basin parameters being investigated for their effect on floods are drainage area, length of main stream, slope of main channel, basin altitude, forest cover, and storage area. All of the 187 gaging stations included in the report are equipped with crest-stage gages. In addition, 4 stations are equipped to record stage and precipitation continuously. The relative magnitude of flood flows for different hydrologic regions is shown in graphs that relate maximum discharge to drainage area. Station records contain location, drainage area, records available, type of gage, on-site structure elevations, bankfull stage, and annual maximum stage and discharge data. These data, with annual peak data from continuous-record stations, form the basis for statewide flood-frequency studies.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The aquifer, of early Eocene to Miocene age, ranges from thin interbedded clastics and marl in the updip area to massive limestone and dolomite 1,500 feet thick in the downdip area. The aquifer is confined above by Miocene clay beds, and terminates at depth in low-permeability rocks or the saltwater interface. Model-simulated transmissivity of the upper permeable zone ranged from about 1 x 10 super 3 foot squared per day in the updip area and within parts of the Gulf Trough (a series of alinement basins filled by fine clastic in material) to about 1 x 10 super 6 foot squared per day in South Georgia, and area having large secondarily developed solution channels. The model results indicate that only about 540 cubic feet per second of water flowed through the predeveloped system, from the updip highland area of high altitude and in the areas north of Valdosta and southwest of Jacksonville, to discharge along streams in the updip area and diffuse upward leakage in the downdip area near the coast and offshore. All are associated with quartz veins, stringers, and stockworks. Samples from both types of deposits have low silver and base-metal contents; samples from deposits within ferruginous chert have anomalous arsenic contents. None of the deposits are large enough to be considered as prime exploration targets at this time. Analytical results from the Bani Sar deposit, which is located within felsic plutonic rocks, are encouraging, but additional surface investigations are needed to define the size and extent of the mineralized zone. Deposits associated with ferruginous chert are also of exploration interest. Except for wells in use before 1920, these data constitute the entire record available through 1977. The data are divided into two categories--pumpage from wells used for public supply, and pumpage from wells used mainly for industrial and commercial uses, designated as nonpublic water supply. Pumpage is tabulated by well or well field and is given by month or year with an annual total. The report serves as an introduction and user 's manual to the data, which are available for inspection but are not included in the report because they fill several hundred pages. The report describes the method of reporting pumpage on Long Island and how pumpage values were derived from the records. Lease Sale 39, in the northern Gulf of Alaska, was held on April 13, 1976, and it resulted in the leasing of 76 tracts. Lease Sale CI, held on October 27, 1977, resulted in the leasing of 87 tracts in Lower Cook Inlet. Lease Sale 55 in the eastern Gulf of Alaska, held on October 21, 1980, leased 35 tracts. The first Reoffering Sale (RS-1), held on June 30, 1981, resulted in the leasing of one tract in the eastern Gulf of Alaska. Lease Sale 60, the most recent sale in the subregion, was held on September 29, 1981. It resulted in the leasing of 13 tracts in the Lower Cook Inlet and the Shelikof Strait. Exploratory drilling has been conducted on tracts leased in Lease Sales 39 and CI. No commercial discoveries were made, and no further exploratory drilling is anticipated on tracts leased in either sale. ARCO has plans to explore a tract leased in Lease Sale 55 in January 1983. Chevron has conducted geohazard studies on tracts leased in Lease Sale 60. The results of these studies will determine if exploratory wells will be drilled. Exploratory drilling, if it does take place, is not anticipated before the summer of 1983.</p><p>In March 1982, the Department of the Interior prepared new resource estimates for the Gulf of Alaska subregion. The risked mean resource estimates for tracts leased in Lease Sale 55 and Lease Sale RS-1 are 12.1 million barrels of oil and 46.2 billion cubic feet of gas. The risked mean resource estimates for tracts leased in Lease Sale 60 are 5.6 million barrels of oil and 5 billion cubic feet of gas.</p><p>The onshore impacts from previous OCS exploration in the Gulf of Alaska and the Lower Cook Inlet were minimal. Yakutat will be used to support exploratory drilling on any Lease Sale 55 or Lease Sale RS-1 tracts. It covers systems for sensing the elevation of the water surface on open channels, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, storm-sewer pipes, and observation wells at Survey data-collection sites. The signal output (mechanical or electrical) must meet the signal input requirements of analog to digital and digital input recorders in use by the Survey. A classification of stage-sensing systems by common characteristics is used to aid Survey people making system selections. These characteristics are (1) system type (contact or noncontact), (2) sensor type and sensing distance, (3) accuracy, (4) range, (5) power requirements, (6) system size and weight, and (7) data output signal. Acceptable system requirements cover system configurations, signal outputs, materials, operation manuals, detailed environmental conditions, calibration procedures, system accuracy, power requirements, installation limitations, maintainability, safety, and workmanship. An outline of the qualification test procedures and failure criteria are also given. The Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility at NSTL Station, Mississippi will test available systems to determine if they meet the specification in this report for inclusion in the Survey 's 'Qualified Products List'. This list will be used for future procurement of water-level sensing systems by the Survey. Willapa Bay is a recreational area minimally affected by industry; Grays Harbor, on the other hand, is moderately industrialized. Aliphatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments from these two estuaries reflect the differences in human activities. For example, the mean concentration of aliphatic hydrocarbons for seven stations in Willapa Bay is 1,000 ?g/g (relative to organic carbon) while in Grays Harbor this mean concentration for \r\nsix stations is 1,900 ?g/g. The difference is attributed mainly to the greater urban and industrial pollution in Grays Harbor. The gas chromatographic records of aliphatic hydrocarbons also reflect the extent of hydrocarbon pollution by the presence of a chromatographically unresolved mixture of hydrocarbons. Water levels in most wells measured in May 1982 were lower than in September 1981. Levels averaged about 9 feet lower in the southern part of the area and 1.5 feet lower in the north. In agricultural areas of southern Hillsborough, Manatee, southwestern Polk, southern Hardee, northwestern De Soto, and northern Sarasota Counties, water-level declines ranged from 5 feet to 29 feet. From May 1981 to May 1982, water-level increases ranged from about 3 feet in the northern counties to about 20 feet in the middle and southern counties. A large structural high is centered on Fairweather Ground and lies generally at the edge of the shelf from Cross Sound to west of the Alsek Valley. A basement uplift, the Dangerous River zone, along which the seismic acoustic basement shallows by up to two kilometers, extends north from the western edge of Fairweather Ground towards the mouth of the Dangerous River. The Dangerous River zone separates the Yakutat segment into two distinct subbasins. The eastern subbasin has a maximum sediment thickness of about 4 km, and the axis of the basin is near and parallel to the coast. Strata in this basin are largely of late Cenozoic age (Neogene and Quaternary) and approximately correlate with the onshore Yakataga Formation. The western subbasin has a maximum of at least 9 km of sediment, comprised of a thick (greater than 4.5 km) Paleogene section overlain by late Cenozoic strata. The Paleogene section is truncated along the Dangerous River zone by a combination of erosion, faulting, and onlap onto the acoustic basement. Within the western subbasin, the late Cenozoic basin axis is near and parallel to the coast, but the Paleogene basin axis appears to trend in a northwest direction diagonally across the shelf. Sedimentary strata throughout the Yakutat shelf show regional subsidence and only minor deformation except in the vicinity of the Fairweather Ground structural high, near and along the Dangerous River zone, and at the shoreline near Lituya Bay. \r\n\r\nSeismic data across the continental slope and adjacent deep ocean show truncation at the continental slope of Paleogene strata, the presence of a thick (to 6 km) undeformed or mildly deformed abyssal sedimentary section at the base of the slope that in part onlaps the slope, and a relatively narrow zone along the slope or at the base of the slope where faulting may have occurred. Observed deformation at the base of the slope is primarily related to the late Cenozoic uplift of Fairweather Ground, and to Quaternary folding perpendicular to the Pacific-North America relative convergence vector. No accretionary section or major deformation is observed along the continental slope. The absence of these features suggests that no major subduction of the Pacific plate beneath the Yakutat margin has occurred during the late Cenozoic. However, transform faulting along the base of the slope has occurred, because probable Oligocene oceanic basement is juxtaposed against Mesozoic and Paleogene sedimentary strata of the Yakutat slope. This juxtaposition most likely occurred during late Oligocene and Miocene time. During much of the late Cenozoic, and especially during Pliocene-Pleistocene time, the Yakutat segment has apparently been moving northward with the Pacific plate. \r\n\r\nDredge samples from the continental slope recovered potential hydrocarbon source and reservoir rocks from the Paleogene sedimentary sequence. Most of the organic matter from these samples is immature to marginally mature. Lopatin calculations suggest that rocks beneath the shelf are likely to be thermally mature at a depth of 4 to 5 km and deeper. In general, the strata at these depths are largely of Paleogene age. Thus, the Paleogene strata may have significant resource potential if source and reservoir rocks similar to those dredged at the slope are present below the shelf. The Paleogene strata are contained primarily within the western subbasin; strata in the east subbasin appear to have little resource potential. Structural traps are apparently present in parts of the basin near and along the Dangerous River zone.
