This report discusses benthic-invertebrate and periphyticalgal communities in streams draining homogeneous-agricultural, forested, active/reclaimed-mine, reclaimed-mine, and unreclaimed-mine watersheds--and relates the biological communities to the physical and chemical characteristics of the streams. \r\n\r\nAlkalinity and pH were lower and the concentrations of dissolved solids, suspended solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum, and zinc were higher in unreclaimed-mine watersheds than in the other land-use watersheds. \r\n\r\nNumbers and community diversity of benthic invertebrates were less at sites affected by mining than at agricultural or forested sites, owing to (1) synergistic effects of low pH, metals, and unsuitable habitat and (2) lack of colonizing drift organisms because of the small drainage area upstream from the mined area. Only a few organisms, such as the caddisflies Cheumatopsyche and Hydropsyche and the chironomids Chironomus and Cricotopus were found in streams draining mine areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82566","usgsCitation":"Wangsness, D., 1982, Reconnaissance of stream biota and physical and chemical water quality in areas of selected land use in the coal-mining region, southwestern Indiana, 1979-80: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-566, vi, 48 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82566.","productDescription":"vi, 48 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145827,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0566/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39434,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0566/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624adb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wangsness, D. These estimates have been derived from many sources, and have a wide range of accuracy. Therefore, they fall short of providing a national data base that is both current and reliable. In 1977, the Congress of the United States recognized the need for uniform information on water use and directed the U.S. Geological Survey to establish a National Water-Use Information Program to complement the Survey's data on the availability and quality of the Nation's water resources. \r\n\r\nThe National Water-Use Information Program was designed as a cooperative program between the States and the Federal Government. The goals of the program are: to collect and compile water-use data; to develop and refine computerized water-use data systems at both the State and national levels; to devise new methods and techniques to improve the collection and analysis of water-use information; and to disseminate this information to those involved in establishing water-resources policy and to those managing the resources. \r\n\r\nThe program that started in 1978 in 20 States now includes participation by 47 States. Water-Use information is being compiled for 12 categories of use. Each State will have a automated data system that contains site-specific information about the water use in each category. The National Water-Use Data System will contain information for the 12 categories of use summarized by counties and river basins within each State. \r\n\r\nThe national system will aid in defining how much fresh and saline surface water and ground water is withdrawn and for what purpose, how much water is consumed during use, and how much water is returned to a water body (stream, lake, or aquifer) after use.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82862","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Mann, W., Moore, J.E., and Chase, E.B., 1982, A national water-use information program: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-862, 15 p. ill., 1 map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82862.","productDescription":"15 p. ill., 1 map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156846,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0862/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53014,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0862/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a33d6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mann, William B.","contributorId":21985,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mann","given":"William B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190732,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, John E.","contributorId":33688,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Chase, Edith B.","contributorId":11192,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chase","given":"Edith","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190731,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Those in the Aqiq Ghamid area are the largest and the most numerous. The other three groups each consist of a few small workings. \r\n\r\nAll of the ancient mines are along quartz veins, many of which are associated with crosscutting felsic dikes. Most of the ancient mines of the Aqiq Ghamid area are in a zone of quartz veins, altered rocks, and felsic dikes in a quartz diorite phase of an elongate north-trending diorite intrusion of Precambrian age. In all areas, sulfides are rare and the silver contents are low. \r\n\r\nFurther exploration is suggested in three areas: the zone containing the Wadi Kara ancient mines, the northern part of the Aqiq Ghamid area, and the Aqiq Ghamid mine, which has an untested potential of 400,000 metric tons of 17 to 24 g/t gold ore.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82989","usgsCitation":"Worl, R.G., 1982, Reconnaissance investigations of ancient gold mines in the northwestern part of the Al Aqiq Quadrangle, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-989, 26 p., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82989.","productDescription":"26 p., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145565,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0989/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39636,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0989/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63ea7d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Worl, R. The upper permeable zone of the aquifer system consists of the Tampa, Suwannee, Ocala, and Avon Park Limestones. Based on analyses of water samples from 591 selected wells, a map is presented which shows dissolved-solids concentration in ranges of 0-250, 251-500, 501-1,000, and greater than 1,000 mg/. Dissolved-solids concentrations and hydrochemical facies developed within the aquifer system are related to the predevelopment and modern-day ground-water flow system.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8294","usgsCitation":"Sprinkle, C.L., 1982, Dissolved-solids concentration in water from the upper permeable zone of the Tertiary limestone aquifer system, southeastern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-94, 1 Plate: 33.95 x 43.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8294.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 33.95 x 43.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":396861,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0094/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":171543,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0094/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.44140625,\n              26.391869671769022\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.298828125,\n              24.966140159912975\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.68359375,\n              24.44714958973082\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.4970703125,\n              25.12539261151203\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.85937499999999,\n              32.43561304116276\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.0673828125,\n              31.653381399664\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4951171875,\n              31.27855085894653\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.44140625,\n              26.391869671769022\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a206","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sprinkle, Craig L.","contributorId":41802,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sprinkle","given":"Craig","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":223820,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Factors that are taken into account in the calculation are: aquifer thickness, ground-water viscosity and its dependence on temperature and dissolved solids, and permeability and its dependence on overburden pressure. The purpose of these calculations is to provide a physical basis for efficient calibration, and to extend rational transmissivity trends into areas where model calibration is insensitive to transmissivity values.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82447","usgsCitation":"Weiss, E., 1982, A computer program for calculating relative-transmissivity input arrays to aid model calibration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-447, iv, 22 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82447.","productDescription":"iv, 22 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145284,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0447/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39477,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0447/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b09cb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Weiss, Emanuel","contributorId":74383,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weiss","given":"Emanuel","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163452,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Ambrosia Lake district is one of several mining districts within the Grants mineral belt, an elongate zone containing many uranium deposits along the southern flank of the San Juan basin. \r\n\r\nTwo distinct types of ore occur in the mine. Primary ore occurs as peneconcordant layers of uranium-rich authigenic organic matter that impregnates parts of the reduced sandstone host rocks and which are typically elongate in an east-southeast direction subparallel both to the sedimentary trends and to the present-day regional strike of the strata. These are called prefault or trend ores because of their early genesis and their elongation and alinement. \r\n\r\nA second type of ore in the mine is referred to as postfault, stacked, or redistributed ore. Its genesis was similar to that of the roll-type deposits in Tertiary rocks of Wyoming and Texas. Oxidation, related to the development of a large tongue of oxidized rock extending from Gallup to Ambrosia Lake, destroyed much of the primary ore and redistributed it as massive accumulations of lower grade ores bordering the redox interface at the edge of the tongue. Host rocks in the southern half of sec. 23 (T. 14 N., R. 10 W.) are oxidized and contain only remnants of the original, tabular, organic-rich ore. Thick bodies of roll-type ore are distributed along the leading edge of the oxidized zone, and pristine primary ore is found only near the north edge of the section.\r\n\r\nOrganic matter in the primary ore was derived from humic acids that precipitated in the pores of the sandstones and fixed uranium as both coffinite and urano-organic compounds. Vanadium, molybdenum, and selenium are also associated with the ore. The secondary or roll-type ores are essentially free of organic carbon and contain uranium both as coffinite and uraninite. They also contain vanadium and selenium but are virtually devoid of molybdenum. \r\n\r\nAlthough much has been learned about these deposits since the time this study was conducted, in 1966, a great deal more study will by required to completely elucidate their geologic history.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr82207","usgsCitation":"Granger, H., and Santos, E., 1982, Geology and ore deposits of the Section 23 Mine, Ambrosia Lake District, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-207, 74 p. ill., maps ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82207.","productDescription":"74 p. ill., maps ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141973,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0207/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36812,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0207/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b30e4b07f02db6b409a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Granger, H.C.","contributorId":15203,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granger","given":"H.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159279,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Santos, E.S.","contributorId":95883,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Santos","given":"E.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159280,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The GOES system, in its present state of development, was found to be about as reliable as conventional methods of data collection. Benefits of using the GOES system include some cost and manpower reduction, improved data accuracy, near real-time data availability, and direct computer storage and analysis of data. The GOES system could allow annual manpower reductions of 19 to 23 percent with reduction in cost for some and increase in cost for other single-parameter sites, such as streamflow, rainfall, and ground-water monitoring stations. Manpower reductions of 46 percent or more appear possible for multiple-parameter sites. Anomalous concentrations of mostly lithophile elements, particularly niobium, beryllium, lead, yttrium, tin, zinc, manganese, and molybdenum in the magnetic and nonmagnetic fraction of heavy-mineral concentrates derived from stream sediment suggest that late stage, highly differentiated felsic rocks were involved in the eruptive history of the Mount Belknap caldera. Q-mode factor analysis was used to characterize the geochemical assemblages within the survey area, and the areal distribution of high-factor scores associated with mineralization indicates favorable target areas for future exploration. The results of these studies indicate that porphyry-type molybdenum and possible associated vein-type uranium mineralized deposits may exist in or near the Mount Belknap caldera.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82602","usgsCitation":"Tucker, R.E., Miller, W.R., and Motooka, J.M., 1982, A geochemical survey using heavy mineral concentrates in the Mount Belknap caldera vicinity, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-602, iii, 136 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82602.","productDescription":"iii, 136 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146606,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0602/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39352,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0602/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae6ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tucker, R. This conclusion is based on stratigraphic relationships primary sedimentary structures, and petrologic features. The White Rim consists of two major genetic units. The first represents a coastal dune field and the second represents related interdune ponds. Distinctive sedimentary structures of the coastal dune unit include large- to medium-scale, unidirectional, tabular-planar cross-bedding; high-index ripples oriented parallel to dip direction of the foresets; coarse-grained lag layers; avalanche or slump marks; and raindrop impressions. Cross-bedding measurements suggest the dunes were deposited as transverse ridges by a dominantly northwest to southeast wind. Distinctive sedimentary structures of the interdune pond unit include wavy, horizontally laminated bedding, adhesion ripples, and desiccation polygons. These features may have been produced by alternate wetting and drying of sediment during water-table fluctuations. Evidence of bioturbation is also present in this unit. \r\n\r\nPetrologic characteristics of the White Rim helped to define the depositional environment as coastal. A crinoid fragment was identified at one location; both units are enriched in heavy minerals, and small amounts of well rounded, reworked glauconite were found in the White Rim throughout the study area. Earlier work indicates that the White Rim sandstone is late Wolfcampian to early Leonardian in age. During this time, the Canyonlands area was located in a depositional area alternately dominated by marine and nonmarine environments. Results of this study suggest the White Rim represents a coastal dune field that was deposited by predominantly on-shore winds during a period of marine transgression.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82204","usgsCitation":"Steele-Mallory, B., 1982, The depositional environment and petrology of the White Rim Sandstone Member of the Permian Cutler Formation, Canyonlands National Park, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-204, iii, 85 p., 3 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82204.","productDescription":"iii, 85 p., 3 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142553,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0204/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39115,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0204/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39116,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0204/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39117,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0204/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39118,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0204/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa9e4b07f02db66882f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steele-Mallory, B.
