Chloride concentrations range from less than 10 milligrams per liter in the northwestern part of the county to more than 1,000 milligrams per liter in the southeast and extreme southwest. Total hardness concentrations range from 110 milligrams per liter in the northwest to 1,700 milligrams per liter in the southeast. In most of the county, high chloride and total hardness concentrations indicate the presence of saline water that entered the aquifer during the Pleistocene Epoch and has not been flushed out. Water quality in the aquifer has also been influenced by submarine discharge in the southeast and by heavy pumpage for irrigation in the southwest. High total hardness concentrations not accompanied by high chloride values in the western part of the county may be structurally controlled or may indicate the presence of gypsum evaporite beds in the upper 300 feet of the aquifer. The hydrogeologic units in the area include the Floridan aquifer, which is made up of parts of the Lake City Limestone, the Avon Park Limestone, and the Ocala Limestone, all of Eocene age; the confining bed, which is composed of clays of Miocene or Pliocene age; and the surficial aquifer, which is made up of Pleistocene and Holocene sands. \r\n\r\nOrnamental fern growing is a $12 million per year industry in northwest Volusia County. Fern culture requires a large amount of good-quality water for irrigation, and more significantly, a large water withdrawal rate for freeze protection during winter months. The source of most water used is the Floridan aquifer. The large irrigation withdrawals, especially in winter months when spray irrigation is used for freeze protection of ferns, introduce problems such as the potential for saltwater intrusion, the temporary loss of water in domestic wells caused by large potentiometric drawdown, and increased sinkhole activity. \r\n\r\nThe water budget of the surficial layer consists of 55 inches per year rainfall, 39 inches per year evapotranspiration, 13 inches per year runoff, and a net downward leakage of 3 inches per year. \r\n\r\nAverage ground-water irrigational withdrawal is 8.1 million gallons per day, while the peak withdrawal rate is 300 million gallons per day during freeze-protection pumpage. The average irrigation well depth exceeds 300 feet. \r\n\r\nTransmissivities of the Floridan aquifer range from 4,500 to 160,000 feet squared per day. Highest transmissivities are in the DeLeon Springs area and the lowest are in the east Pierson area. Storage coefficients range from 0.0003 to 0.0013.\r\n\r\nThe water budget of the Floridan aquifer under present conditions of withdrawal consists of 108 cubic feet per second recharge, 2 cubic feet per second horizontal ground-water inflow, 34 cubic feet per second direct discharge, 40 cubic feet per second upward leakage, 22 cubic feet per second horizontal outflow, and 14 cubic feet per second pumpage. \r\n\r\nThe Floridan aquifer contains good-quality water in most of the study area, but also contains brackish water underneath the stressed zones and in the upper zones along the western and southern limits of the area. The altitude of the fresh- saltwater interface varies in the area from 1,500 to 300 feet below sea level. \r\n\r\nAreal drawdowns in the fern-growing areas of Pierson are 5 feet during growth irrigation periods and 20 to 30 feet during freeze-protection withdrawals. The drawdown in the Pierson area at the end of one intense period of pumpage exceeded 30 feet over a 4.4-square-mile area. A significant amount of the withdrawn water was replaced by leakage during the pumping period. Drawdowns in some pumping wells in northeast Pierson exceed 90 feet during freeze-protection withdrawals. \r\n\r\nNo long-term residual drawdown has occurred. The predominant effect of pumpage on the water budget of the Floridan aquifer has been an increase in recharge. Sinkhole activity has been increased by the temporary increase in load on the aquifer's skeletal structure during intense lowering of the potentiometric surface. There is no evidence of saltwater intrusion, but a monitoring network for future early detection is suggested.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82108","usgsCitation":"Rutledge, A.T., 1982, Hydrology of the Floridan Aquifer in Northwest Volusia County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-108, 116 p, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82108.","productDescription":"116 p","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144339,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0108/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38703,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0108/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e499f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rutledge, A. Of these variables, 35 showed detectable variation over the area, and 29 were utilized in a correlation analysis.

Two populations are distinguished in the collected samples and are especially evident in the plot of Ca versus U. Samples separated on the basis of U versus Ca proved to represent drainage areas of two differing lithologies. One group was from waters that drain the Boulder batholith, the other from those that drain the Elkhorn Mountains volcanic rocks. These two groups of samples, in general, proved to have parallel but different linear trends between U and other elements. Therefore, the two groups of samples were treated separately in the statistical analyses.

Over the area that drains the Boulder batholith, U concentrations in water ranged from 0.37 to 13.0 μg/l , with a mean of 1.9 μg/l. The samples from streams draining volcanic areas ranged from 0.04 to 1.5 μg/l, with a mean of 0.42 μg/l. The highest U values (12 and 13 μg/l) occur along Badger Creek, Rawhide Creek, Little Buffalo Gulch, and an unnamed tributary to Clancy Creek.

Conductivity, hardness, Ba, Ca, CI, K, Mg, Na and Sr are significantly correlated with U at or better than the 95 percent confidence limit in both populations. For water draining the Boulder batholith, uranium correlates significantly with akalinity, pH, bicarbonate, Li, Mo, NO2+NO3, P04, SiO2, SO4, F, and inorganic carbon. These correlations are similar to those found in a previous study of water samples in north-central New Mexico (Wenrich-Verbeek, 1977b). Uranium in water from the volcanic terrane does not show correlations with any of the above constituents, but does correlate well with V. This relationship with V is absent within the Boulder batholith samples.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82203A","usgsCitation":"Suits, V., and Wenrich, K., 1982, Multielement chemical and statistical analyses from a uranium hydrogeochemical and stream-sediment survey in and near the Elkhorn Mountains, Jefferson County, Montana. Climatic characteristics of the area, which were evaluated as one phase of a comprehensive hydrologic study, are presented to help provide the means of evaluating the impact of mining on the area 's water resources. Data for precipitation , air temperature, and evaporation obtained by the U.S. Geological Survey from October 1974 to September 1978, and similar short-term data obtained by other Federal agencies at sites in and near the study area, were tabulated and adjusted to a 1941-70 base period. For all sites with incomplete records for 1941-70, the data were adjusted by relating them to concurrent data collected at one or more long-term National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sites. Maps were prepared showing areal variance for normal annual precipitation, normal annual air temperature, and normal annual pan evaporation.. The normal annual precipitation ranges from less than 8 inches for altitudes under 5,000 feet to more than 20 inches above 9,000 feet. The normal annual air temperature ranges from 37 to 47 degrees Fahrenheit and varies inversely with altitude and latitude. The normal annual pan evaporation ranges from 42 to 60 inches and varies directly with normal annual air temperature. Although not mapped, it is shown that the normal April 1 water content of the snowpack increases from about 5 inches at 7,000 feet to about 11 inches at 9,000 feet. In addition, the year-to-year and within-year variances of some climatic characteristics are illustrated. The standard error of estimate when relating normal annual precipitation to altitude is 17%, which is equivalent to the standard error when relating the average for 5 years of observed record at a site to the long-term mean at the site. Thus, it appears that additional observation points would not improve areal coverage unless the observation sites were continued for 5 years or longer. The map is one of a series of maps produced as part of a regional study of aquifers of Cenozoic and Mesozoic age in the northern Great plains of Montana. The contour interval is 200 feet. The map shows that the directions of regional ground-water movement is from west to east except in the extreme northwestern corner where the movement is from east to west. Water is discharged from the Eagle Sandstone to the Missouri River south of the Bearpaw Mountains. In the area north of the Bearpaw Mountains, depressurization from gas production may account for the decline in the potentiometric surface. The average discharge from 115 wells is about 23 gallons per minute and the specific capacity of 85 wells averages 1.4 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82565","usgsCitation":"Levings, G., 1982, Potentiometric-surface map of water in the Eagle Sandstone and equivalent units in the northern Great Plains area of Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-565, 1 Plate: 40.81 × 22.83 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82565.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 40.81 × 22.83 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":78824,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0565/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":407484,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75643.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":171535,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.5,\n              45\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.0417,\n              45\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.0417,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.5,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.5,\n              45\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696b88","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Levings, Gary W.","contributorId":106889,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Levings","given":"Gary W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":224205,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The study evaluated present knowledge and concepts of the ground-water system and the ability of the model to represent the system. Modeling assumptions and generalized physical parameters that were used may have transfer value in the construction and calibration of models of other basins along the lower Colorado River. The aquifer was simulated in two layers to represent the three-dimensional system. Ground-water conditions were simulated for 1940-41, the mid-1960's, and 1980. Overall model results generally compared favorably with available field information. The model results showed that for 1940-41 the Colorado River was a losing stream through out Parker Valley. Infiltration of surface water from the river was the major source of recharge. The dominant mechanism of discharge was evapotranspiration by phreatophytes. Agricultural development between 1941 and the mid-1960 's resulted in significant changes to the ground-water system. Model results for conditions in the mid-1960 's showed that the Colorado River had become a gaining stream in the northern part of the valley as a result of higher water levels. The rise in water levels was caused by infiltration of applied irrigation water. Diminished water-level gradients from the river in the rest of the valley reduced the amount of infiltration of surface water from the river. Models results for conditions in 1980 showed that ground-water level rises of several feet caused further reduction in the amount of surface-water infiltration from the river.
