Some previous assessments have attempted to estimate the rate of formation of new faults; some have relied heavily on historic seismicity or the time of latest movement on faults. More appropriate emphasis is on the identification of faults that have been active or may have been active under the present teconic regime in a broad region and on estimates of the long-term rate of movement of such faults. Faults that have moved under the current stress field, even at low rates, are likely to move again during the time the wastes will remain toxic. A continuum exists for the present rate of movement of faults which ranges from 10 mm per year for obviously active faults along the western margin of the North American plate to as low as 10 -4 mm per year for recently documented faults in the Atlantic Coast province. On the basis of regional consistency in movement rates and constraints imposed by geomorphology, I derive upper bounds for the rates of occurrence of fault offsets for various crustal stress provinces in the conterminous United States. \r\n\r\nThese upper bounds are not meant to substitute for detailed studies of specific faults and seismicity at specific sites. They can help to reduce the considerable uncertainty that attaches to all estimates of future tectonic activity. The true density of a solid is calculated as the true unit volume of the solid exclusive of its pore space which is divided into the weight of the sample. \r\n\r\nThe method is similar to that used to determine the density of refractory materials but the procedure is modified to yield precise density determinations of coal samples. These modifications diminish effects of trapped moisture and gases on the volume measurement. \r\n\r\nThe helium gas-comparison pycnometer method is rapid, reliable, precise, and requires minimal analytical equipment and sample preparation, and also is non-destructive to the coal sample. Using this method, densities can be determined on coal samples of subbituminous to low-volatile bituminous rank and perhaps also on samples of lignite. Discharge of Glade Creek and the two springs, turbidity of the springs, water levels in the well, water temperature, and chemical quality of the springs and well were monitored during construction and for 6 months after completion of the highway. The monchiquites and limburgite turfs erupted from the diatremes are distinguished from normal alkalic basalts of the Colorado Plateau by their extreme silica undersaturation and high water, TiO2, and P2O5 contents. Many trace elements are also unusually abundant, including Ag, As, Ba, Be, Ce, Dy, Eu, F, Gd, Hf, La, Nd, Pb, Rb, Se, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, U, V, Zn, and Zr. \r\n\r\nThe lacustrine sediments, which consist predominantly of travertine and clastic rocks, are the hosts for syngenetic and epigenetic uranium mineralization of as much as 1500 ppm uranium. Fission track maps show the uranium to be disseminated within the travertine and clastic rocks, and although microprobe analyses have not, as yet, revealed discrete uranium-bearing phases, the clastic rocks show a correlation of high Fe, Ti, and P with areas of high U. Correlation coefficients show that for the travertines, clastics, and limburgite ruffs, Mo, As, Sr, Co, and V appear to have the most consistent and strongest correlations with uranium. Many elements, including many of the rare-earth elements, that are high in these three rocks are also high in the monchiquites, as compared to the average crustal abundance for the respective rock type. This similar suite of anomalous elements, which includes such immobile elements as the rare earths, suggests that Fluids which deposited the travertines were related to the monchiquitic magma. Daily mean water-level fluctuations and trends are shown in hydrographs for the previous year (1980) and fluctuations of the monthly mean water levels are shown for selected years in some observation wells in Georgia. Water-quality samples are collected periodically throughout Georgia and analyzed as part of areal and regional ground-water studies. Along the coast, chloride concentrations have remained stable around Savannah, but invasion of brackish water into the aquifer at Brunswick has increased the chloride concentration. Mean annual water levels throughout Georgia ranged from 3.42 feet higher to 12.68 feet lower in 1981 than in 1980, and in some areas were the lowest on record.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. There are 260 annotated citations: 176 citations of reports; 8 citations of computer models that have been used to model either or both rivers; and 76 citations of data in reports , in field notes, lab sheets, or handwritten tabulations, and in computer data bases. Citations of all the reports and data located that might conceivably be useful in understanding and interpreting the biological and chemical quality of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers in the past, present, or future were included. The accuracy of the citations was not verified and secondary sources, such as other annotated bibliographies, were used in the compilation of this inventory.

Because of the pattern drilling at each shot point, several holes (60 m deep) could be logged for temperature at each site and thus allow a better estimate of the geothermal gradient. Each site was mapped and sampled in detail, and modal and. chemical analyses of representative specimens were made in the laboratory. Thermal conductivities were computed from the modal analyses and single-mineral conductivity data. \r\n\r\nThe resulting heat-flow values, combined with published values for the Red Sea and coastal plain, indicate a three-level pattern, with a heat flow of about 4.5 heat-flow unit (HFU) over the Red Sea axial trough, about 3.0 HFU over the shelf and coastal plain, and an essentially constant 1.0 HFU over the Arabian Shield at points well away from the suture zone with the oceanic crust. At three sites where the rocks are granitic, gamma-ray spectrometry techniques were employed to estimate thorium, potassium, and uranium concentrations. The resulting plot of heat generation versus heat flow suggests that in the Arabian Shield the relationship between heat flow and heat production is not linear. The first gives sites alphabetically by stream name and includes the body of water to which the stream is tributary, county in which the site is located, drainage area above the mouth, coordinates of the topographic quadrangle on the State index map , and the Geological Survey site number. The second list presents site information by U.S. Geological Survey site number (downstream order along the main stream) and includes drainage area, distance of measurement site above the mouth, and location by latitude and longitude. Data were compiled from published and unpublished sources, all of which are available for inspection at the U.S. Geological Survey in Albany, N.Y. Also included are updated values on several river basins that have been redelineated and whose drainage areas have been recomputed and retabulated since 1977. The geologic formations exposed in the quadrangle are comprised of Precambrian layered and intrusive rocks, Tertiary gabbro dikes, Quaternary basaltic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, and Quaternary surficial deposits. No economic mineral deposits have been found. \r\n\r\nThe Precambrian rocks include layered sedimentary and volcanic rocks that have been assigned to the Baish, Bahah, and Ablah groups. They have been folded, metamorphosed, and invaded by three separate intrusions. The Precambrian rocks are cut by Miocene gabbro dikes that were intruded during the initial stages of the opening of the Red Sea rift. As a result, the potentiometric surface of the Floridian aquifer has been lowered in some areas, allowing seawater to encroach into the aquifer and threaten the freshwater resources of the area. Effective management of groundwater is needed to control the encroachment and protect the freshwater aquifer.
